The macaroons are just right. Light on the outside. Moist on the inside with intense flavour. The baguette is a perfect crust. Pull it apart to reveal that lovely sourdough smell and holey texture. What could be better? The patisserie is jewel-like gorgeous, just as you'd hope. It invites itself onto your tongue. Try some strawberry ricotta cake? Some carrot cake, perhaps? Wish I could be more generous but sorry, the employees upon walking in are just outright rude!!! Twice this weekend, I've walked in only to be stared at with no greeting and arms crossed. One girl was leaning on the bread section looking at her phone and couldn't be bothered to look up. I say twice because I was hoping it was a fluke and I would try again. This time I brought 3 other people and it was just as bad if not worse. They must hate people. It was all they could do to even take the order, what an absolute shame. The owner perhaps wasn't there this weekend because last weekend for the anniversary, it was completely different. I was excited to see that level of service and it fell flat two days in a row. This Green City market only baked goods stand has some pretty amazing dessert pastries. I've pretty much been satisfied with every single pastry that would have whichever fruit is in season, but the pear pastry with almost cream uh... took the cake. SECOND, when I took a bite, it EXPLODED into millions of flakes. I SCREAMED. Pieces on the TABLE! Pieces on the FLOOR! Pieces on my COAT! Pieces INSIDE my COAT! Even in my HAIR, which I do NOT need. Good patisserie and they are close to my home. I just wish that the staffs were friendly.

This place is capable of making some really great pastries. The problem is, they are very inconsistent and often sell items that are over or undercooked, or just plain too old. They are selling subpar products at premium prices. I first fell in love with them because they made killer kouign-amanns. But the last 3 I bought were either overcooked or raw in the middle. The last straw was I made an order on To Good to Go, which sells surplus products and items that are a little too old to sell at full price. You don't get to pick what you get, and the surprise is normally the fun. I've used this app for a while and have always had good luck. But not at this bakery. They gave me a rock hard slice of cake, which went bad days ago, and 2 tarts that were so old the pastry had turned to absolute mush. It makes me wonder why they held on to these items for so long to begin with. I'll never go back. read more

This is probably my favorite vender in the market and maybe my favorite puff pastry close by.. I've got the mushroom pastry and ate it cold with a coffee. It was so good, crispy and seasoned perfectly with a bit sprout on top. I just heated up the pear pastry in the oven and had it with friend. Very nice quality pastries. The chocolate croissant was really nice and all of the macarons were delightful. The texture and flavor was sooooo good. I had the vanilla, earl grey tea, pistachio, strawberry vanilla, and the raspberry rose. Delicious! The lemon tart was awesome and the pear almond tart was really nice as well. read more

We finally found croissants and baguettes that taste like in the best French patisserie. By curiosity, I went to their website and you understand why, the chef has learned at the best place in France: Lenotre, Michalak, Grolet... (about section). The moment you first take a bite, you know the cake was made with the highest quality ingredients from someone with a lot of care in their craft. They are very moist, not overly sweet and beautifully made. I have tried the strawberry ricotta, lemon praline and salted caramel apple. Lemon praline is probably my favorite but all 3 were excellent!!! I recently ordered 2 cakes for a party I was hosting for my husband. It was his only request- these cakes! When I picked them up, the couple could not have been more kind and sweet. The gentleman offered me a few pastries (incredible) as I waited for him to box my cakes. If all food tasted this great, people would never again eat mindlessly. Layer cakes made with what's in season are always excellent - strawberry cake is to die for, peach cake was a hit for a dinner party and the carrot cake is the best I've ever had - this great pasty chef knows how to bring out the flavors and sweetness of the ingredients! Perfect cake texture, silky fillings, luscious frostings and oh so pretty. Puff Pastry tarts are just scrumptious - love the wild mushroom and savory vegetable tarts for an appetizer with wine or a salad for an easy elegant lunch or dinner (or just eating out of the bag) Macarons are out of this world - worth ordering on Artizone or placing an order at the farmers market to pick up the following week. Verzenay first came to my attention at the Saturday Green Market in Lincoln Park. It was the crunchy exterior and the flavorful, tender center of their canelé (most I've had in the US are a bit rubbery) that made me think that this was more than just another French pastry source in Chicago. I especially like their pear tart and everyone whose had a slice of their strawberry cake raves about the delicious delicate crumb, not too sweet but not dull either, as supermarket cakes tend to be. Whether it is a tart or a cake, it is a natural goodness that makes them stand out. I say natural because although one might find many pretty showcase pastries in the city, most have a commercial, mass-produced quality--as if the ingredients came out of cans designed for the industry, additives/preservatives and all, and probably do. On the other hand, Verzenay's have the look and flavor of having been individually crafted using the best of what is available to a mother's kitchen. Ever wonder why mom's cakes are always better than store-bought? ( It helps that pastry chef Arshiya trained at L'Ecole Grégoire-Ferrandi in Paris which makes me think that it might be better than that other more popular pastry school whose products in my humble opinion have tended to come up short). read more
