    Lobster tail with chocolate cream

A much-loved institution in the Rome area, the Franklin Hotel offers mostly terrific food and friendly but painfully slow service. The restaurant is large with many floors. It's a popular option for private parties, and indeed on the day we went there for a weekday lunch, there was a private party. My husband, who grew up in the area, recalls that the restaurant seems to be chronically understaffed. Though we arrived at peak lunch time, I noticed that there were at least two or three parties who arrived after us but who got served before us. Perhaps they were regulars who got VIP treatment. Normally, our being repeatedly overlooked wouldn't have really bothered me, except for the fact that we had two very antsy toddlers who were getting increasingly restless and I was getting increasingly wearisome of their antics and finding new ways to entertain them--even while there were two TV screens ahead. It was sort of odd that our server was often apologetic during the times when she would arrive with something, but totally forget us. At one point, I wasn't sure whether to get up and order a lobster tail pastry directly from the dessert display case or whether to order at the table. Shortly after I decided with the latter, I immediately regretted it, because we had to wait a long time, yet again. Service issues aside, the chicken riggies and Utica greens were fantastic. The turkey panini was standard and forgettable--it was also unnecessary since the portions of the other items were substantial. Fresh complimentary bread was a perk, though even that took a very long time to arrive (again, other parties who arrived after us even got their bread before we did!). The large lobster tail with chocolate cream was probably one of the best I've ever had, with copious fresh filling and a flaky exterior. The display cake had many other options that looked mouth-watering and inviting, including numerous cakes and cookies. Definitely worth another visit, but not at a peak meal time.

Franklin Hotel is one of those Staples for visiting Rome NY. It's always packed whether it's for dinner drinks or the dessert counter. And there is a reason it is, everything there is delicious. We were seated in under 5 minutes. Our server was attentive with drinks and bread. Our first course was out in under 10 minutes and maybe another 10 for our entrees so the timing was just right for everything. My gf enjoyed her salad, I like my soup but my only issue for the evening is it was a little clear and thin for being Manhattan clam chowder (it's known to be a thick red broth). The mushrooms and ravioli were so filling and tasty and my couldn't finish her gnocchi and had to take the rest to go. I've had the desserts and love them but was too full to get any. First world problem am I right?

My friend and I were nearby and she told me their homemade Lobster Tail Italian pastries were amazing. We stopped by and they had other items as well for sale. They had several choices of cakes and sfogliatella and Pasticciotti also. I came home and ate 1/2 of my lobster tail, it was huge. The pastry was crispy and light and the pastry cream filling was the best I've had. I'm going to say it weighed about 1/2 pound, it was filled full of the cream. Good news is I have more to eat. I also bought a slice of the fruit cake with marscapone. I tried a small taste this morning . The cake was just how I love it, dense and moist, the butter cream was smooth and not too sweet Inside was the marscapone and fruit. For me, this was substantial enough that I will have at least 2 servings from this one slice.

This is a no frills, great service, excellent food place! Homemade desserts and fresh bread and Ron, our very capable and personable waiter! Loved everything about it and brought home a loaf of Italian bread to enjoy. The lobster tail pastry was the best I've ever had!

Food was fresh and absolutely delicious! I felt like I ate a home cooked meal. Hands down only place where you must eat while in Rome.

This is the real deal. A neighborhood restaurant. Authentic people and authentic food. Service, food and in-house baked bread and pastries are world class. The interior decor hasn't changed in decades and it's great to step back into time. Our party of three ordered Linguine with White Clam Sauce, Ravioli with a Meatball, and Chicken Cacciatore. All was cooked perfectly, and flavor packed. Perfect. Served hot with a few slices of their own Italian bread that is just delicious. Great prices too. I suggest you go on non peak hours to avoid the crowds. Be prepared to take home a loaf of bread, a few cannoli, some pastries or a couple dozen almond paste or other cookies. Highly recommended - been here many times and never had anything less than a perfect meal.

Solid choice. I haven't been there in a while as I've moved. Checking the menu for an upcoming trip. Didn't they use to serve tripe?

The average wait time is 20 minutes beyond your reservation time. Once you are finally seated, the wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly and will help you select your evening repast. And then you will wait again. Typically at least 20 minutes for your food. For your drinks, for your appetizers. It wasn't always like that. There is an internal inefficiency in their kitchen operations in recent months that results in delays. They seem to have enough staff. They just seem to have lost their rhythm. The ambience is lovely, the table settings fine. But there are little things that are slipping. As you can tell from my many reviews of this restaurant over the last several years, this beautiful establishment has achieved four stars. But today in June 2026, their beautiful cuisine is served on nice porcelain plates, but their coleslaw is served in a paper cup. The music is way too loud so you can't have a conversation at the table unless you scream. And they claim to not be allowed to turn the music down. They clearly cater to the 30 and under crowd. The 60s and older are not a priority for them. Wine is properly served, and the drinks are nicely mixed but to get a refill will take you a very long time. When the tables around you are empty, it begs the question as to what is the cause of the delay. My last two dinners here experienced these inexcusable delays. I hope they get the problem straightened out. Because this really is a destination restaurant.

Cute crab shack ambience, it's a hot spot so order or arrive before the dinner crowd. My first visit was a Saturday around 6 and it was crowded and not a seat to be had! All the seafood platters being served looked amazing, so I knew I was in the right spot! I was greeted as I approached the counter and was assisted with my take out and recommended popular party sack combinations. I ordered #3 which includes a lobster tail, one cluster or 1/2 lb snow crab, 1/2 lb shrimp (I recommend requesting Head Off!) a piece of corn, and 2-3 potatoes. I chose Cajun seasoning and, very hot spice. Warning you best be a very spicy hot lover, it was challenging but loved it! I have already returned for a second time, also #3 sack added extra corn $3 and extra potatoes $3. CrabnGo special seasoning and still extra hot! Delicious not as over the top as Cajun Hot! $47 and change with the added corn and potatoes. $42 and change without. Only one quarter piece of corn first order and two potatoes. Love it! We started the week out at a chain restaurant that was horrible, but has been very good since as we have hit up various local establishments. Chowder House did not disappoint either. Sort of odd for us that several of these local restaurants are secluded and in the middle of a residential area. Chowder House has a little strange entryway so when you walk in you have the feeling of not really knowing where you're going. You are greeted with a large fish tank though which is perfect. Once inside, the place opens up and there is plenty of seating. Very nice seafood Decore throughout the restaurant. Very friendly and knowledgeable server this evening. She named off several specials that were available, and didn't have to read a thing. Many of the items are made fresh daily so this is a high-quality restaurant. We both ordered the clam chowder which was really good. My colleague ordered the Pirates seafood platter which came with shrimp, fish, fries and coleslaw. I had one of the specials which was shrimp and squash ravioli. This was extremely good. I mentioned as we were leaving that if we had eaten here earlier in the week, I would definitely have eaten here again. Many items on the menu to select from, and I would love to try more however leaving town in the morning. The price is right as well. We were out the door with tip for around $50. Very good for seafood. If you enjoy seafood, I highly suggest and recommend this location.

The Food: Fried Artichoke Hearts ($7.50): Not crispy at all and very greasy. The dipping sauce lacked seasoning and just tasted like heavy oil. Snow Crab Legs ($39): 4/5 stars. A little overcooked, but overall tasty and the highlight of the meal. Fried Fish Sandwich ($11) & Fries: The bread on the sandwich was delicious, but both the fish and the fries were incredibly greasy. This spot is always packed and clearly has a loyal following, so I don't know what happened during our visit. I usually adhere to a three-strike rule before judging a restaurant, but the food was heavy enough that we won't be returning.
