One word: yum. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A wonderful afternoon in an even wonderful atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's all good seriously. I had the chicken Kiev, dumpling (perogie...sorry I'm forgetting the Ukrainian name). Very friendly staff too!

Absolutely amazing place! Had the best choose 4 pierogis! Fantastic food and service. They gave me an extra aperol spritz on the house as well before my flight :) [[HIGHLIGHT]]Love the outdoor seating during a beautiful day.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Will definitely be back on my next trip to NY!

I could eat this again and again. Boiled pierogies and latkes! I've been to the original location in East Village and the outpost at Market Line that has since closed and they're all just as good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Wburg location has the classic old school diner vibe and the service is efficient and friendly[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. The potato and cheese are my faves and the sauerkraut mushroom deserves a spot too. A special moment goes to the perfectly crispy outside and soft, evenly cooked inside of the latkes. Just perfect. And of course everything topped with applesauce and fried onions. Delicious.

We love Veselka on the Lower East Side! Parking is always a challenge so I told my wife let's go to Veselka new location in Williamsburg for dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Walking inside, the restaurant feels likes its been in Williamsburg for 50 years. They made the restaurant so comforting, so.. Williamsburg![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Veselka Williamsburg is smaller than the Lower East Side location but the smells coming from the kitchen close to the dining area seals the deal.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We're focused on one item, the Borscht. In the winter its served hot so I don't want a cup but a bowl of delishiousness. We also ordered a large combo plate with plenty of pierogies. The pierogies came with two cheese and two meat filled pierogies, I like to come here and get the boiled pierogies, The hot borscht is served with meat, I thought it was short rib but I asked our waitress and was told it was pork. I am swooning over this dish. Even the sour cream, its not a dollop of Daisy, its so smooth and creamy. I highly recommend starting with the Borscht. The boiled pierogies, they are homemade and filled with goodness. The sides are caramelized onions and that terrific sour cream goes very well with these bad boys. The stuffed cabbage topped with a brown gravy was a total game changer. The stuffed cabbage was also another great addition to our combo plate, I loved this dish. I'm not sure if there is a reservation system, we walked in and waited about 10 minutes before our table was ready. Veselka Williamsburg is a great addition to the restaurant chain!

I ordered lunch delivery from here. I tried the Stand with Ukraine special. I got my it fried rather than boiled. I'm guessing the sautéed bacon and onions it comes with are very oily, because there was a pool of oil at bottom of the container, that spilled into the bag. Despite that unappealing start the flavors were on point. The bacon and onions were delectable and each perogie was expertly constructed and filled. Still, all that greasiness didn't make me feel great. I think eating it at their restaurant would be a better experience.

I was worried it would be super crowded on a Sunday night, but we walked right in and were sat instantly. The food also comes out super quick! We ordered and then BOOM it was in front of our faces. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great sized location. You don't feel like you're sitting on top of the next table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I am so full! I couldn't even finish my meal. I have only tried Veselka once at the location on 2nd Ave but I won a giftcard on Instagram to the Williamsburg location. DELICIOUS! I tried to order different things than last time and I was not disappointed! I want to keep coming back!

The chicken soup is great and so are the pierogies! I like to come here and get the boiled pierogies, I feel like they're a little healthier than fried, but maybe that's just in my head

i got the brooklyn lunch special of 4 pierogies + a bowl of borscht on a chilly, rainy day and it was the perfect meal. i loved the borscht and my favorite pierogies were the braised short rib and chicken + vegetable flavors. i came during an off time so i was seated and served very quickly.

Veselka's brand new location in Williamsburg offers the same delicious Eastern European food and drinks as their other locations. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service was fast and the place is clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had the potato pancake combo plate and chose a cup of borscht and beef Stroganoff with it. Super filling! The borscht is amazing. I recommend going for lunch if you want to beat the prime time rush.

Everything at Veselka is delicious, down to the borscht, butter on toast, and the potato latkes. However I wanted to give a special shoutout to an underrated star -- the pancakes. They are the perfect diner pancake- a stack fresh off the griddle, remains hot even after 10 minutes. Huge, crispy edges and fluffy in the middle. Haters will say, why not a more popular diner spot. But I've tried a decent bit and for me it really is the crispy edges and temperature freshness which is hard to come by at the more popular spots. The fact that Veselka is popular but can still deliver is impressive to me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I took off one star just because it's always so busy and I don't love sitting at the bar but these are the downsides of fame!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

5 stars for the ambiance and service, but 3 stars for the food. Pros: - Fun old-school diner vibes with playful odes to Ukraine - Ukrainian Borscht soup was delicious, clean, and flavorful. Cons: - I found the Stuffed Cabbage and Perogies to be bland and had to eat them with loads of sauteed onions, the Veal Goulash was dry and stringy (the sauce and mashed potatoes were solid), and the side of broccoli was steamed and you had to apply cold butter on it yourself (far from the Garlic Butter Broccoli described on the menu). Overall, we were not wowed by our meal. I'm curious to return and try the buttermilk or potato pancakes.

Think Veleska East Village 2.0. Opened only since June, it is catching a following with the locals as it is a bit away from most activities. Same huge menu and service. We had 2 great breakfast meals and decent coffee. Recommended.

Once stepping into the store, you are met with large freezers and fridges stuffed to the brim with all things Ukrainian. Many of their dumpling items are in large packages (2-3lbs a pack) and range from $8-$15 per lb depending on the filling. $15 a pound for their lamb and short rib Pierogis. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. The only thing I wouldn't get again is their soup dumplings, as it was a bit difficult to cook and was a little too doughy near the top of the dumpling. Flavor wise, it was delicious and had a nice broth (assuming you didn't pop them. Only 1 didn't pop). But it was a difficult item to cook right in boiling water, like the instructions mention. Perhaps, user error. Every item is sold by weight and labeled after selecting your items. But they're happy to check the weight/explain price before purchasing.

It's Friday, July 3...and it's a heatwave; lots of people are out of town and streets of NYC are not super busy. For $4, I added the bacon/kielbasa/onion topping, which came in a little cup; it's worth it. Both pierogi options were great, but I actually thought the BEC was the star of the show. The egg was not runny and the bacon was chopped very fine; the filling was seasoned well with salt and pepper. My husband really enjoyed the short rib pierogi. Next time, I'll try the potato one. Service was fast and the prices were reasonable. The space is very retro with interesting art on the wall. I had a cup of borscht and an order of dumplings, which were both great. The borscht was something I will crave for a while. The broth just had an incredible, balanced flavor. I thought since my food was pretty warm up and serve, that it would be a quick meal, but the service was pretty slow. I sat and waited a while. It was Mother's Day, so I think they were busier than usual with catering orders and moms and grandmas stopping by for desserts for brunch at home. So the pace of service may have been affected/out of ordinary for that reason. For those visiting for the first time: Take a look at the menu upstairs on the sidewalk before going down to the restaurant, because there was only menu downstairs at the counter where you order, so anyone coming for the first time will have to flip through the menu while holding up the line to order unless they know what they want already. When you go downstairs, the restaurant is behind the first door to your left; it's not well-marked. A lot of reviews say it's cash-only, but that may have been under the prior owners/management, because they definitely took credit cards/Apple Pay when I was there last weekend. If you love Ukrainian food, Streecha is well worth a visit. I love its no frills, classic approach to dining. I dragged my partner to the basement kitchen that is Streecha and he was unprepared to face three nuns in the hallway leading to the kitchen with his tattoos uncovered. The fear in his voice when he asked if we were in the right place was already a great sign. Tucked in a room to the left were several long tables and a lady in the front taking orders. We wanted to try a little bit of everything so we settled for half a dozen of meat verenyky, a half dozen of potato and cheese verenyky, borscht, and stuffed cabbage. Our favorites of the bunch were the stuffed cabbage and the half dozen potato and cheese verenyky. We only wished everything was hotter because it seemed only the potato verenyky was hot. But as a self-service kitchen that relies on the help of volunteers, it wasn't surprising. So if you're looking for Ukrainian food without spending a fortune at Veselka, Streecha is a great alternative. I also think they do affordable lunch specials so that's something else I need to try.

After walking out of a very bad experience at imereti Georgian cafe down the street (see separate review) I found this place. Boy, am I glad I did. I was seated in the front. The restaurant was gorgeous. ! I could hear a beautiful voice singing, Eastern European songs in the back of the restaurant and at one point,, he switched to Elvis's "I can't help falling in love with you" in English. That made me a little emotional, because that was my late partner's and my song... Anyway, I decided to go for the crêpes with red caviar (salmon roe), and the Ukrainian borscht. Bread and butter is brought to my table. The white bread was OK, but the brown bread had a deep rich flavor. The crêpes come first, and they were amazing. The crêpes were very warm, soft and delicious. I loved the "red caviar". A little bit salty, more briny than fishy, and a wonderful explosion of flavor when the eggs "pop." in the mouth. I was very happy. Next came the borscht. It had cabbage, beets, potatoes, and either beef or pork. I'm not sure which one. The meat , beets and potatoes was very tender, and the soup was delicious and not too rich. A very satisfying flavor., the beets gave it a little bit of an earthy flavor. The sour cream that came with it, just added a creamy richness to it without overtaking the flavor of the borscht. 1000% a home run. Dinner wasn't cheap. Two dishes, two iced teas (I found out they charge for refills), and tax, and it came out to about $48 before tip, .I didn't care. I don't mind paying extra if the food is that good, and this food was absolutely beyond awesome. I would be glad to come back and try other items on the menu. Thank you!

Sheep by Barashka (or in other words rather humorously when translated Sheep by Sheep) is an Azerbaijani restaurant (specifically Gorsky) similar to Village Cafe or Baku Palace with the prices on the menu being somewhat in the middle though closer to Baku. Like those spots, you go here and have one of two experiences depending on whether someone speaks Russian/Azeri and whether you're here for a party. It's part of the experience and luckily I was part of the latter. When my part of the group arrived, there were several salads such as an avocado salad with tomato, eggplant salad (basically the same thing as Turkish Soslu patlıcan,) and an Achuchuk salad (tomato and onion based.) There was also herring which was tasty. Soon arriving were some hot appetizers. There were two variations of Kutab/Qutab which is essentially a flatbread either stuffed with meat or with greens with both being outstanding and in my opinion a bit better than the other spots I mentioned. There was also potatoes with mushrooms which was okay (I prefer more of a crisp) as well as Khachapuri or cheese bread which was salty and delicious though perhaps a bit too buttery. The main dishes were the standouts. The sturgeon kabobs were outstanding with very tender flaky fish which paired nicely with the pomegranate molasses/narsharab found commonly in the region as well as another cold sauce which I believe was tomato based. In terms of meat, their specialty is chalahach or in other words baby lamb chops. These were meaty, tender, and some of the best I've ever had. The lulya kabob or ground lamb kebab was also tender and delicious and I would recommend them. The rest of the meat was also good but these were definitely the best. I don't remember having dessert. The food overall here was delicious and I can see why this has become a preference for them. There is apparently live music here but they weren't in that night which I didn't mind as it was easier to talk. Good food (especially the main dishes) and friendly staff.
