This review is specifically for the scheduling and communication experience, not the veterinarian. I never made it to the veterinarian because of the lack of urgency and follow-through from the front office staff. I first contacted this clinic in April regarding my dog, Teejay, who was diagnosed with an acanthomatous ameloblastoma, an aggressive oral tumor. From the beginning, I explained that I was traveling from Los Angeles and that I have mobility limitations following spinal surgery. Because of those limitations, I repeatedly asked whether my records could be reviewed in advance and whether there was any way to minimize unnecessary trips. They declined and stated I still needed a consult before I would even get the X-rays done. Considering this is a tumor that's aggressive I chose to have the X-rays done here so avoid a trip there. Months later, after obtaining a pathology report, laboratory work, dental radiographs, skull/jaw imaging, and photos, I contacted them again and was specifically instructed to email everything for review. I did exactly that and sent a detailed email with all records attached. Five days later, the response I received was essentially to contact the scheduling department. The problem is that the scheduling department was the same office that had originally instructed me to send the email in the first place. Instead of reviewing the information, I was sent in circles. When I pointed this out, I was disappointed that nobody simply acknowledged the mistake or apologized for the inconvenience. Instead, I was repeatedly told that I should have informed them that I had sent the email and what email address it came from. My full name, contact information, dog's information, pathology report, photos, imaging, and laboratory work were all included in the email. At that point, the issue was no longer the email. The issue was the complete lack of accountability. Even after explaining multiple times that my dog had an aggressive tumor, that I was traveling from Los Angeles, and that I was recovering from spinal surgery, I continued receiving explanations and excuses rather than a simple acknowledgment that the situation had been mishandled. If this is how communication is handled with the client, it did not give me confidence moving forward with a major surgical procedure for my dog. At a minimum, I expect basic communication, follow-through, and professionalism when dealing with something this serious. After reading other reviews from people who traveled from Los Angeles and experienced similar communication issues, I feel I made the right decision not to proceed. Fortunately, I found another veterinary surgeon who reviewed the extensive records I had already gathered. They reviewed the pathology report, imaging, laboratory work, and photos and agreed that no additional diagnostics were needed before moving forward. Surgery has already been scheduled. I cannot comment on the quality of the veterinary care because I never reached that stage. I can only comment on my experience as a prospective client, and unfortunately that experience was disappointing. read more

I brought my 4-year-old German shepherd dog to this clinic for ACL surgery because the cost was significantly lower than what I was quoted in the United States. Looking back, it is one of the biggest regrets of my life. Before surgery, my dog was otherwise healthy. He would occasionally carry his injured leg due to the torn ACL, but he was still happy, active, playful, and acting completely normal. One of the first red flags should have been that I was never able to speak directly with the veterinarian--not once. All communication went through staff members. I also requested medical records and surgical notes multiple times and never received them. Exactly one month after surgery--the same amount of time I was told the pain injection would last--my dog began yelping, screaming, and showing signs of severe pain. Watching him suffer was heartbreaking. We immediately took him to our regular veterinarian in the United States for a second opinion. After evaluating him, they recommended revision surgery. During that procedure, they discovered multiple issues that needed to be corrected. We were told they essentially had to perform several repairs in one surgery because of the condition of his leg. According to our veterinarian, the plate had not been properly secured, his kneecap was out of place and had to be repaired, his meniscus was torn, and he also had a fractured bone. It was devastating to hear, but it finally explained why my dog had been screaming in pain. Around this same time, I also began noticing that his eyes looked cloudy. I brought it up to our veterinarian, but because of the severity of the orthopedic issues, we focused on getting his leg repaired first and planned to address his eyes afterward. Unfortunately, his condition continued to decline. He lost vision in one eye and then the other. Shortly after going blind, he began having difficulty standing and getting up on his own. Despite everything we did to help him, he continued to deteriorate and ultimately passed away only a few months after what should have been a routine ACL surgery. I cannot say with certainty what caused all of the medical problems that followed, but I do know that I brought a healthy 4-year-old dog in for a torn ACL, and a few months later he was blind, unable to get up, and gone. The lack of communication, the inability to speak with the veterinarian, the refusal or failure to provide medical records despite multiple requests, and the extensive corrective work required by my U.S. veterinarian have left me with far more questions than answers. If I could go back, I would spend the extra money and have the surgery done in the United States. The money saved was not worth the outcome, the suffering my dog endured, or the heartbreak my family has experienced. read more

If I could give a zero star I would. I had made an appointment for teeth cleaning for two of my seniors dogs. I have taken them here before 2 times before within the last 6 years. They have their medical history and all the information needed. I showed up with them on the date and time of appointment. Come to find out once I'm get there they didn't have me on their calendar even though I had proven text messages from their office that it was confirmed. Now they make me to go a second location of theirs to get evaluated and force my dogs to get an examination and blood work which I understand it's needed IF they get their teeth cleaned. However after they examined and took blood and determined they were healthy enough to go under anesthesia for their cleaning. I leave go to to another appointment then they start blowing up my phone about how they don't know if they can do the procedure and how they forgot to have me sign papers while I was there so now they keep calling me with Spanish only speaking representatives. Rushing me to sign things digitally and passing the phone around to multiple people since there's a language barrier. They get frustrated I'm frustrated. THEN. They call me saying that the anesthesiologist is uncomfortable doing the procedure because she is inexperienced and new a anesthesiologist and since my dogs are old she is denying it. Even though they had my dogs medical history. Even though their examination by the doctor was approved. Even though their bloodwork is good. Because SHE was uncomfortable and since they didn't have any other anesthesiologist they denied the procedure. NOW I have gone all the way to TJ from OC and had to pay for a forced examination and bloodwork. Took me through an emotional roller coaster with forgetting my appointment and forgetting me to sign paperwork all to get denied. So I wasted my time and money because they were unprofessional and unprepared. I am completely disappointed from beginning to end. Now I'm out $500 drove to TJ for nothing and my dogs teeth are still needing a cleaning. It's a nightmare! To be honest, my review would be A lot higher if not for the lack of communication. I took in my three year-old Australian Shepherd to get the TPLO surgery The day of her Surgery everything went well; the staff was great. They explained it very well about the procedure and what to expect for aftercare and explained when I have to come back, etc. My issues with communication came after the fact. My dogs incision was slow to heal, and there was some liquid coming out, after surgery wasn't to sure if it was an infection. The staff told me to keep coming week after week to check the area which don't get me wrong is a good thing. They were not quick to put her back on antibiotic. On her one month checkup for x-rays I came to her appointment about 20 minutes early to the appointment only to wait 4 hours for them to tell me that the x-ray machine was down and when I asked during the 4 hours of waiting to see if someone can look at her leg since it was still not healing properly and as per her previous appointment they stated that they would take a look at her at her leg to see if it had healed. When I asked they stated that they wouldn't be able to to see her until 3 PM mind you my original appointment was at 10 AM. I then had to seek outside veterinarian help, which required a x-ray and wound culture which a week after the results stated that my dog had indeed had an infection in her In her leg, the vet had told me I should go back to her original surgeon to see if they can help with the infection in which I had called playas to make an appointment, Playas gave me another strong antibiotic cycle to give to my dog, and after the seven day course, I noticed that a cyst had started growing in the area. I then Contacted Milo the patient coordinator via WhatsApp on Thursday and as of today Sunday I still have not heard back. I've been to VetPlayas with all the pets in the past. This time it was very different, I was very disappointed with the quality of service let alone the price. Now I understand why their prices aren't listed. My 13 yr old chihuahua has some bumps and a big mass around her neck. I went in for a check up, at 13 years old I understand her health isn't the best. I made the appt for last wed March 4th. Wait time was normal about 15-20 mins. Th vet was with us maybe 10 mins, the surprising thing is in those 10 mins she took maybe 10-15 coming up with the bill of $16k pesos. The office spent more time calculating the optional services than actually telling me anything that could give my doggie comfort or even suggest anything outside of the ridiculous quote. I truly believe my biggest mistake was telling them I was coming in from Pasadena in case I was a bit late. Outside of the exam which they say was an oncology exam, they did absolutely nothing other than charging me $1000 pesos. Regular exam is between $300-$450 pesos, they also did grooming for $700. That seemed reasonable, even the grooming they did alot more than the Vet did just measuring her lump and rushing to give me the price. The moment I said I didn't want to do the 7-8 different exams the Vet quoted me on because of her age and honestly the cost, she lost interest and pretty much walked out. I thanked them and told myself never to return and will also pass that experience to anyone who asks. read more

I had made an apt weeks prior regarding my two dogs and specified that one definitely needed an ultrasound bc we were unsure if she was spayed or not and my male balls didn't drop only one so the procedure is not a normal neuter. After being in the room and getting the initial consult I am told that they don't have any open slots for ultrasound for either of my pets till later at night. I had travel from Los Angeles and did not expect to be told my dogs weren't going to be seen since I made an appointment for both things knowing it's needed. After they make me add on vaccinations that weren't really needed bc they wanted to make more bang for their buck since the spaying for neither occurred. I am extremely sad to make this review but I believe it to be necessary. I came across this clinic while searching for a neurologist that could see my pet, after it had been diagnosed in the US with a neurological problem but treatment was super expensive at home. When I reached out I was quoted an MRI for $1300, and despite it being double the price of what other clinics in TJ were charging, I decided to come here because I was specifically told by whoever I made the appointment with, that, while it was not guaranteed, there was a chance the MRI could be done on the same day of visit. My dog had been suffering with parálisis for 2 weeks so I decided to take the risk and come here. When I arrived, a young "doctor" I believe his name was Chris, evaluated my pet. He tried to lay down my dog on the exam table sideways and since he was in so much pain he was refusing to cooperate so he immediately picked him up and said I have to do this exam in the back room, I'll be right back. I was thrown off my this but complied. When he came back, he said "they are working on the estimate, I'll talk to you when it's ready. A few minutes later he came back with an estimate for $1350 for an MRI that he explained, could not be done in the same day no matter the circumstances,and several other costs like blood work and a new x-ray (mind you I brought my dogs x-rays from another vet, but he said they were done incorrectly and recommended them to be done again) along with a list of medications. He told me he could not give a diagnosis until he had the MRI, and that in order to even check availability for the MRI I had to give a deposit of half the amount. I declined treatment because since the MRI would take another visit I thought I might as well just go to another place that would also require me to wait, but it would be half the price. The "doctor" did not like this, his demeanor immediately changed and so of the front desk staff. When I paid for the consultation I requested a copy of what the "doctor" was recommending, and his response was "take a picture of it".... So going back to when I was making the appointment over text, I was quoted $1300 for the MRI (see photo) and then now suddenly it went up $50? Second, they advertise they have transportation service from the border to the clinic, when I inquired I was given this Miguel Angel Ortiz guy contact that works with them, when I asked him about how much it would be, he first asked me"what procedure is your pet having?" (Irrelevant) and then when I said "I don't know, it's just an exam" he quoted me $305 DOLLARS for a round trip from the San Ysidro border crossing! For an 11 minute ride! I declined and took an uber that charged me $7 DOLLARS! Overall it's sad that this place is open because all they care about is making the most money, and that would be fine if they offered top of the line care but this all felt like a bad joke. I would never come back to this place and I hope anyone who reads this in hope of getting some information when choosing a vet for their beloved pet RUNSSSS from these scammers. They should not be in business. Shame on you. read more

I called this place on a Tuesday evening because my dog needed surgery for an obstruction in her small intestine, they said they were able to assist me. It cost a pretty penny as it was an intense surgery, unfortunately my dog is still at the hospital taking care of my baby as she has a drain that requires medical care for about 5 more days. I'm very grateful that the surgeon was willing to attend to my baby even though it says they close at midnight he stayed after hours to perform this surgery. They've been very consistent with communication and updates and pictures. I am so grateful for Vet Playas. I had a couple complaints about the staff, but my aunt came and talked to the owner and he was very understanding and open to hearing us out. I drove Thursday, September 4, 2025 from Los Angeles, California to Tijuana to get dental care for my Pug Coquito. He is a bit over 13 years old. I was impressed with the cleanliness and welcoming atmosphere as I walked in, the staff were friendly and Dr. Diana Portilla was a professional who put a ease right away. Coquito got a complete thorough examination. The dental cleaning was done and I was very happy with the results. Dr. Portilla designed a plan to take care Coquito as he is in his golden years. I plan to go back in the next month and half to two months to discuss and see the progress of his medical plan to ensure Coquito gets the veterinary care he needs. I highly recommend Vet Playas Veterinary Hospital. The prices compare to Los Angeles are quite reasonable. The service was great. My daughter's 19 pound chihuahua mix was attacked by a coyote and suffered punctured lungs. Two excellent surgeons performed a complicated surgery on him and he was cared for by a great team over the next seven days and nights. We received daily updates and throughout the evenings. They responded to all of my daughter's questions. Yesterday we picked him up and we were given detailed instructions on his path to full recovery over the next 10 days. I had a very negative experience here. It felt like a used car lot - very high pressure sales tactics to get me agree to all kinds of tests and procedures not requested and not needed. When I declined several of their proposals and explained what I wanted, the vet turned to my boyfriend and continued to pressure him into agreeing. I am the only guardian of my dog and the one paying the bills, but he continued to try to work my boyfriend even after I declined two times. It was like a scene from a movie - the AC was out and they were literally sweating us! The sexist approach the vet took was just icing on the cake. The staff that helped us here were absolutely lovely! We came here for a second opinion after our vet in the US said my dog had CCL tears in both her back legs. Dr. Odette Ramos examined my dog to confirm if she had a tear in her CCL. After an exam under anesthesia, they confirmed that my pet had a partial tear in her CCL in just one hind leg. They showed us a 3D model of what the CCL looks like as well, so we could understand how my pet's injury works. They recommended a TPLO surgery and they were able to perform it that same day. They said my pet had to stay overnight for monitoring, but we could pick her up the next morning if everything went well. They said they would send us 2 text or call updates about how my pet did in surgery, including photos of my pet, but we never heard back from them that day. When we texted/called them that evening, we did not hear back, so I was worried. We called again the next morning to check on my pet, and they said my pet did well and was ready to be picked up. Dr. Ramos was very helpful and gave us verbal instructions for how to care for my pet post surgery. They also gave us a written packet about what to expect over the next few months as my pet recovers. We are super grateful that Vet Playas was able to help my pet. Their surgery pricing was much more affordable than the estimates we got in the US. We look forward to our follow up appointments so the vet can confirm if my pet is recovering the way they want. read more

This is review is for my conversations with the staff and the owner , not for services rendered. I have a dog that needed to be seen by a vet and I knew it would probably be an expensive visit based on what I thought was happening. So I started to research vets in TJ , Mexico because I've heard about some other pet parents traveling down there for more affordable pet care. After researching quite a few , I contacted Vet Playas because based on Yelp they seemed to be at the top of their game compared to all others in that area. They also were open over the weekend and others were not based upon the hours provided. I was contacted by Ron , who I believe is the owner. He let me know that a front desk person would be contacting me shortly. I was contacted via Whats App by the front desk staff and they gave me pricing on all the procedures I'd asked about. The exam is a little less than what the states charge, however all the other procedures were much less expensive than having them done stateside. Ron texted me & then we spoke for a good amount of time going over what might be the issue with my dog and the various procedures that may have to be done to diagnose. He also gave me pricing for all of those things. He was very patient, informative, and not pushy. Thankfully my dog's original issue was resolved so I didn't end up using Vet Playas services. However, I would definitely consider them if I need vet services again based upon my conversation with Ron. I suggest to those that do not speak Spanish well, use a translator when speaking to the other staff so there are no miscommunications. Google has a translator you can enter text in whatever your language is to translate into Spanish and vice versa. read more

I've come here a few times for my dogs and I had great experiences. My baby boy Bolt came here a couple times to see the cardiologist for his heart. I saved a lot of money compared to the drs in San Diego and they treated us really well. At one point his heart was struggling and they heard fluid in his lungs. I wasn't trying to leave him there like they suggested so instead the doctor said we could try giving him a shot then waiting for 4 hours and get another shot before heading home. We did that and it really helped so I was able to take him home. I appreciated that they didn't pressure me to keep him there. I also recently took 2 of my other dogs there for dentals. I saved quite a bit of money and they had no issues whatsoever. They can run behind schedule but I'll definitely be coming back. They also speak pretty good English, so don't let that deter you! read more

I took my kitten luna for an emergency. They were great communicators and would send me updates on luna. Doctora Angela was so sweet and shows care for your fur baby. Worth Every Mile for the Best Vet Care! I have a 14-year-old Belgian Malinois named Sasha, and we've been coming to this vet for the past three years--even though we live in Los Angeles and it's a three-hour drive each way. The drive is absolutely worth it. Dr. Becerra was Sasha's first doctor here, and I'll never forget how he helped us during one of the scariest times. Sasha was suffering from severe allergies and was bleeding through her nose--we truly thought we were going to lose her. Our local vet in LA quoted us over $3K just to put a camera up her nose to look at the problem. It was overwhelming. We came here instead, and all the necessary procedures cost under $600--and most importantly, they saved Sasha. Now that my sweet old lady has new health issues, we're back again. This time we saw Dr. Josely Orozco--and I've got to give her a shoutout! She is knowledgeable, incredibly patient, and takes the time to answer all your questions without ever making you feel rushed or dismissed. This place is a true gem. If you're coming from Cali, yes, this hospital is cheap in comparison. If you live here in Mexico it's not. General blood test quote on Whatsapp $ 115, the next day in the office at the front desk $ 135. What???? Not a specific one.... general. 2 different prices. Blood test is only good for 10 days, then they require a new one. Even AI says that blood tests are good for 14 to 30 days depending on the situation of the dog. Understandable! They just tried to make $ 135 in a quicky. The vet (keep in mind they have 90 percent US clients) didn't speak any English and had to have a translator in the room. Unheard of. The vet, who never told us his name, was disengaged and annoyed at times. Making awkward sounds. The translator sounded like he was reading from a medical textbook. Unbelievable!!! My friends dog has a lot of different health issues. He has Pica (dogs eat everything and anything that they find). He has an obstacle in his stomach. We found out about it on 6-17. We returned on 6-22 to do another ultrasound. I do speak and understand Spanish well. Upon entering the exam room the vet said "what are they doing here again.They were here last week (rolling his eyes)." We explained that we wanted to have another ultrasound done to see if the item had moved or if it was still in the stomach. Quote:" That's not necessary....it probably dissolved by now." Really? Assuming is not knowing! The ultrasound showed that the item was still in the stomach. We wanted a endoscopy done and they refused because the blood test was 10 days old. A newly blood test was done (chaching $ 2300 pesos, $ 135) and we were told that the dogs kidneys had collapsed and the liver was shot. No endoscopy possible. (A different vet the next day said that the dogs kidney amounts were ver high but still in range and the liver was in not good shape and needed attention asap). Playas vets were great a long time ago. Safly not anymore... it's a money making machine. And don't get me started on the front desk. The most unprofessional and unpolite staff. 2 front desk clerks could help 2 clients who want to pay. No no no, not in Playas. 2 clerks are needed for 1 client because the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. We had to wait 25minutes to pay. And the attitude??? OMG.... We're now at Dr. Peña in Ensenada.... they're taking their time, explain everything thoroughly and treat you with respect, not like some bimbo. read more

I am very thankful the hospital and all the doctors here to help my dog's recovery. Last year around mid of November my dog suddenly can't walk in few days . In the first time we send to my local animal hospital to see the doctor and want to find out what's going on , then my dog did the x ray and some exams there . But after that the doctor still can't know what happened to him and even recommended us to euthanize my dog immediately because he can't walk and even don't let us take him home. So terrible ~~ After we take him home we all upset and have no idea what to do next. Then I try to ask ChatGPT and have finally got some good information and good news to us .So we decided to try to the Mexico hospital. When we go to there first time the doctor was very friendly and professional. We bring the x ray there and he told us our dog need to do the IVDD surgery and need MRI to know how bad the situation immediately. And My dog finally did the cervical spine surgery on December 9-10 last year and so far now he recovery very well and even can walk and pee now . We are very very happy and appreciative the help of the doctors and hospital. read more

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place. My dog had a broken leg from an accident and we took him here. They told us his blood work was clear and they proceeded with the surgery but when we took our dog home, he was very lethargic and did not eat. He would whimper and stare out to space. The vet kept assuring it was all normal. I didn't believe them. We decided to we wanted to get a second opinion but he passed the next morning. After looking at more reviews it seems like this has happened more than once where a low risk surgery ended up being tragic. read more

Disappointed in our experience , definitely will not be going back. I found a more affordable vet that took better care of my puppy . Was quoted 6,000 to put my dog under and they wanted 2,400 for the incision mind you the facility has cameras when I had asked the doctor dollars or pesos she responded with dollars . If that was the case I would have stayed and done it in the US . Hey everyone just wanted to give an update because surprisingly I've been getting a lot of messages asking how she's doing now. Short answer: She's doing great and is 90% back to normal. I'm very thankful to this place. This happened in February and it is now June. She can walk, run, jump, play. She's practically back to normal but not as agile as she was before. She gets tired faster so she cant take long walks like she used to but she still walks okay. Before she could walk like 3 miles and now she walks about 1/2 a mile. I carry her a lot more but overall she's fine. Long answer: After getting the MRI results from Vet Playas within a week or so the surgeon from Vet Playas did not recommend surgery after all. He felt she could heal on her own with crate rest and physical therapy at a doggie rehab. He thought my dog was a good candidate for healing with physical therapy without needing surgery. I was so grateful with their integrity and honesty because surgery would be way more. I was quoted approx total $4.5K with surgery and 2 week stay. But since I didn't need surgery instead I only paid less than 1.5K give or take for the bloodwork, X-rays, MRI, an overnight stay, and the medications she needed. I had lost hope and they gave me my hope back that she would be okay. I came back home and looked for a local dog rehab location. She had a total of 10 physical therapy sessions and I could see her improve so well. My husband was skeptical it would work but amazingly it. The surgeon was right. I'm so glad he was honest. I did crate rest her during the day for 4-6 weeks. I felt guilty putting her in a crate but I reminded myself it was for her own good and healing. The dogs that recover the best are the ones that are crate rested. I would only take her out for her physical therapy appointments and take her on a short walk for potty breaks. The first few weeks I would carry her to the grass so she could potty. After a few weeks of therapy I could take her on 10 mins walk to potty. It was incredible to see her heal. Each weeks she got better and better. It was so amazing to witness her improve each week after each physical therapy appointment. Now, I'd say she's fine. Her cheerful, playful personality is back. She's back to chasing squirrels and back to her happy self. She takes zero medications now. read more

We always take our pets here. Our dog had gotten hit by a car and he was stable enough for an appointment the next day. They will answer quickly. We also have had our cat euthanized here after a bad cat fight and they treated him lovingly and helped us make an informed decision. Always provide pictures and videos during their stays. We have had our dogs neuter here, and we had his teeth cleaned several times. We live in San Diego, and this vet is so much more affordable- at least 1/2 the price. Our dog gets great care here. The wait time is long if you come for surgery/dental cleaning under anesthesia, but no longer than a us vet because they have to do some bloodwork and then the dog has to wake up from anesthesia. I recommend booking a massage in the area and having a nice lunch while you wait. Also if you are going back to the US, BUY THE MEDICAL EXPRESS PASS FROM THRM TO GET BACK TO THE US. It took us 6 hours without to get back one time, but with the pass it takes 40 mins. read more

They extorted me for money. They quoted me a fee for a requested service, and then when I arrived, they proceeded to run labs that I already had done in the states, It was $190. And only THEN did they tell me they actually didn't provide the treatment i was requesting for my cat (the treatment they gave me a quote on) and refused to let me leave until I paid $190 for the lab work I had done here in the states for $90. read more

I waited about 30 minutes to be seen, not bad as I expected the worst. But to my surprise when I was finally seen, the Dr that helped me was Uber understanding of my concerns and educated me on my dogs condition. A few things had happened that just seemed like a lot for my senior dog to handle. We addressed each matter separately. She send us home with meds and sent biopsies to the lab. Unfortunately my dog does have cancer and I found this out via email the following week. I was given options of how to address it but after our initial visit I knew my dog wouldn't withstand either options. My decision was respected and my dog is living his last chapter in comfort. Definitely would come back if we need to. I feel equipped with the information provided to know when it's time to bring him in. read more

We were told by local Vets that we needed to put down our 15 year old Maltese because they couldn't perform a hernia surgery-too much time and money. We called Vet Playas and they saw our dog the next morning (less than 12 hours of us contacting them) and said he was a GREAT candidate for surgery and it would be no issue.
