I recently had to say goodbye to my beloved guinea pig Chai at VEG Newton, and I cannot express enough gratitude for their extraordinary compassion. From the moment we walked in, the staff treated my small pet with the same respect and dignity they would show any larger animal - something that meant the world to me. The team thoroughly understood that the size of a pet doesn't determine how much we love them. There was no judgment, only genuine empathy and support during this difficult decision. Their open floor plan meant I could stay with my little one throughout the process, and they explained everything clearly and gently. I have never had to do anything like this but felt in good hands. What sets VEG apart is how they truly put both people and pets first. They took time to understand our situation, never rushed us, and created a peaceful, caring environment for our final moments together. For anyone facing the difficult loss of any pet - whether it's a dog, cat, or small animal like my guinea pig - you'll find nothing but understanding and professional care here. Thank you, VEG, for making an impossibly hard day a little bit easier, we noticed the heart you added when you wrote her name on the box.

I just want to say thank you thank you thank you thank you so so so so so much for everything you guys have done! They are beyond the best!!!!!!!! My lovely birkin have been taken care of so well!!!!!!!!! They've helped my pet out so much and God bless every single one of you guys! if you guys are in a urgent/emergency situation with your pets this is the best place to take them!

As we come upon the one-month anniversary of the realization of my worst nightmare, I feel compelled to share my utmost gratitude to and amazement of the amazing staff at VEG Newton. In the late evening hours of 08/02, I carried my sweet, vivacious, high-energy Ruby girl into your facility in extremis. The team jumped into action before I had even fully laid her on the exam table and begin relaying the information I had. A working diagnosis was swiftly identified, and subsequently confirmed to be acute hemoabdomen likely related to a ruptured splenic mass. The team set about working fervently to stabilize my precious girl in the hopes of getting her into the OR to address both the mass and the bleeders. Throughout this delicate dance, every member of the team did their part to keep me fully updated on this ever-evolving situation. I assume this was slightly more difficult than usual given my background as a peds critical care RN and subsequent deeper questions about almost everything. It soon became evident that despite everyone's best efforts, Ruby was not likely to survive her situation. I will never forget the face of the head veterinarian who gently told me, "humane euthanasia is an option in this situation", but I will forever kick myself for not making a point to know her name. Her words knocked the wind out of me, they opened the box that contained my worst fears that I had been desperately trying to keep shut... but I knew they were true. Knowing further resuscitation efforts would likely prove futile, the decision was made to stop efforts to stabilize Ruby and instead we shifted our energy toward prioritizing her comfort. This decision, one of the hardest most gut-wrenching decisions I've ever made, felt right, almost natural, thanks to the information from and conversation with this veterinarian whose name I wish I could remember. The team at VEG Newton was as incredible in facilitating Ruby's end of life as they had been in the fight to resuscitate and stabilize her. They seamlessly transitioned us into a quiet space that allowed me time and privacy to love on my sweet girl and say my final goodbyes in private. Given that I was a slobbery, snotty mess- I really appreciated this privacy. In this private room was an unassuming bell, ready to be pressed when needed, that would summon the veterinarian- just one person- who would help Ruby cross the Rainbow Bridge when we were ready. We never once felt rushed, pressured, nothing like that. I loved on my girl, telling her how much I loved her and thanking her for being my ride or die for all those years- I apologized over and over for not being able to save her and I promised I would never forget her for as long as I lived. I could feel her growing more tachypneic and was concerned that was a sign of discomfort, so I rang the bell. The veterinarian- the one whose name I wish I could remember- materialized and asked if I was ready. I said, between sobs, that I was as ready as I could ever be. We had discussed the drug cocktail previously so I knew what she was holding in her hand, and I knew this was it. I laid my head on Ruby's chest, as I had so many times in our normal life, and I listened to her heart. Felt her breathe. I felt her respiratory rate slow, and eventually I heard her heart slow to a stop. I waited for the veterinarian to listen, to officially declare it, but I knew. My sweet Ruby, my OG ride or die... she was gone. Sometime after 0100 on 08/03, my Ruby left this earth. I can only hope, pray, that the Rainbow Bridge is real, and that I will see my sweet girl again someday. While the veterinarian's face is the one that plays on in my dreams, and sometimes my nightmares, I want the entire VEG Newton crew working that night to know that I see you, you matter, and I am so grateful for you all. You took my girl and treated her as if she were your own- that care was palpable. I cannot thank guys you enough for the incredible care you gave Ruby, for fighting for her when she was too weak to fight for herself, for the compassion and expertise you all possess and share with your patients. Your work is so important and your efforts are so appreciated. I know it's a thankless job, so please just take this one and remember it, especially when times get tough. -Mandey and Pearl (Ruby's mom and sister)

Definitely don't bring your small animals here they don't know how to help/care for them. Either take them to a small animal specialist or anywhere else but here. I literally heard some of the vets say "I'm not a hamster person " I'm so glad I decided to leave before things could have ended bad.

Overall, I felt as the staff was competent and very caring for my pat. I however believe the price is completely unreasonable for the service. At the moment, it doesn't appear there is a lot of competition in Boston in 24 hour emergency clinics which may contribute to the exorbitant prices. My only comparable experience is my time in San Diego where I paid about ~1/3 for the same diagnosis and action a little over a year ago at a premier clinic there. I've already done my research and intend to try another clinic in the city for the next emergency for my dog. Rates were: $200 for exam $300 for blood work $70 to administer a syringe of medicine $130 for medicine (pain killers and anti-inflammatory)

Our Maple got poked by a piece of fence today and had a bad cut, and our regular hospital was down a vet so they recommended here. They took great care of Maple and even let us stay and watch the treatment. They were compassionate and explained everything they were doing. We recommend VEG for animal urgent-care.

Our cat Happy says thank too!

We had an unexpected emergency when our precious cat "Happy" got a toy stuck to his paw. He was in pain and he wouldn't let us help him. We were so appreciative of the Veg team and their quick response! More over, it was amazing to see their level of professionalism and their ability to quickly help our cat with ease! Our entire family thinks the Veg team is simply amazing...and Happy the cat is back to being his friendly self!

Dr. Estes explained everything clearly--what was happening, the prognosis, and what we should do next. The techs / nurses--Kim Nguyen, Kendra Baker, and Jennifer Ducharme--were also wonderful: professional, patient, and very caring. They were attentive throughout the entire process while our Pomeranian was undergoing sedation, and you could tell they genuinely cared. I'm sure they see situations like this every day, but they still treated our dog with the attention and care he needed. Small things like that matter. These are clearly very capable people who could work in many different fields--including human medicine--but they choose to care for pets, and it shows. My last visit would sadly be my last as my family made the difficult and painful decision to put him down. Its taken me a little over a week to write something but I know I wanted to tell everyone about this location. Numerous issues, including a cancer diagnosis, coupled with his old age after a surgery at his home vet. The staff were always so sweet and caring with him. They even managed to entertain him with some classical music when he was a little yappy! He lived a long, happy spoiled life. I miss him everyday. My first pet out of high school, we were almost never apart. I think that knowing he was in the best possible hands near the end helped take some of my guilt grief away. Every single person was amazing and I just know that profession cannot be easy. God, my sister and I cried for hours and we were never rushed. Dr.Silverstone, thank you for always being straight with us but also extremely professional and kind. They contract out to help with end of life arrangements and cremation, if you choose. 'epaws' or something. The arrangements were done quickly but not so quickly that you worry about disrespect, you know? A week later and I have his urn and we've set up a memorial in the house for him. No one wants to think about these things but pricing is transparent and gotten out of the way quickly. And yes, it's pricy but what isn't? This is emergency care. Get pet insurance!!!! Honestly, I would have gone bankrupt if it helped but there is unfortunately a limit to things that can be treated and the doctor said it best: "age is not a disease". So hopefully your fur babies live long, happy lives and that you only have to go for minor inconveniences but if you do have an emergency, this location was clean, professional and fairly easy to get to. I had broken my ankle last year so walking has been a challenge but I got around just fine, even carrying around my 20lb lump of love. Thank you all again. I don't know when I'll be ready for another pet but I don't regret all the years of love. Once time has softened the pain, and years go by, I hope you all stick around and do what you ALL have done so well and maybe I'll see you again...Hopefully under better circumstances. My friend called ahead to them know that my cat was near the end and that I wanted her euthanized. We were told that they would place us in a room (NOT a treatment room) When I arrived, they took her to the treatment area instead of into a room and I was super confused. They freaked when they saw her...it was like one of those frantic scenes on those medical dramas when multiple people run to the gurney. My friend was like "hello, she is here to be euthanized and they apologized. They sat me in a cold exam room and they brought my sweet Tatiana to me wrapped in a towel. The second they placed her in my arms, pinkish liquid started coming our of her nose and mouth. I freaked out an fortunately my friend, who is a hospice nurse, was with me and held as the trainee fumbled around with trying to find a vein for the final shot. Her veins had collapsed so my literally had to tell her where to place the needle. All of a sudden I heard this gushing sound and screamed "what was that??" Fortunately my friend warned me not to look. There was so much liquid released that she had to borrow scrubs and her sweater was ruined. It was absolutely traumatizing. When I left the treatment area they asked me if I wanted to take home the carrier. I don't know exactly what I said but it wasn't nice. Nobody told me what the hell was going on. I had been there only 4 weeks earlier and was simply told "you have a very sick kitty." And then, when I trusted them to help us through her final moments, they failed. I called a few days letter and cried as I explained what happened. The woman (manager?) was not very empathetic and made excuses for what happened but at least she refunded me the cost. I wish that I had the positive experience that others who have reviewed this had. The image of her sick, skinny little body wrapped in a towel with that stuff coming out of her nose and mouth is forever etched in my brain. I am working hard to replace that memory with a happy one but it is really hard. This should never happen to any pet mom again.

He saved my life many times over, I adopted him when I was still active duty in the Marine Corps. The last few months were tough, I'd equate it to hospice for a dog. I dreaded making the decision, and I came close at least 6 times but every time I said give it one more day he would bounce back, go for a walk, do his business, eat, drink, ask for treats. This morning I woke up and I felt something was different. He wasn't moving well, he didn't finish his food, and then his head was stuck turning to the left at almost a 90 degree angle and he fell on the floor like that. I picked him up and laid him down on his other side on my lap hoping he just had a bad cramp, but after an hour I tried putting him down in front of his water and he collapsed. I held him for another 30 minutes and then he had an intense seizure for at least a minute, his whole body was tensed and stretched out, and his mouth was wide open gasping for air. He came through the seizure but he had no strength in any of his legs - even at his worst in the months prior when he bounced back he could at least support himself on his front legs, but he had no strength and his breaths were long and slow. I dreaded making this decision, but I couldn't allow him to suffer. I called a few vets in the area and no one could take us. One of the last vets I called recommended I reach out to VEG. I called them, they said they could help. I walked in and was immediately brought into a private room with my dog. The receptionist, the nurses, and the doctor were so comforting during one of the hardest times of my life. I'm going to bed tonight without my best friend for the first time in 16 years, but the compassion that the staff shared with me knowing it had to happen was above and beyond. I don't know if I'll ever have another dog, but if I do this would be my go to veterinarian for any issues. And I hope no one has to make the decision for your animal, but if you do, I give the VEG staff the highest recommendation I possibly could. She was cold, condescending, and completely dismissive, presenting every decision as if it were hers alone and speaking down to us rather than guiding or consulting us as the pet's family. There was no compassion, no kindness, and no sense of understanding during one of the most terrifying moments of our lives with a very sick dog. Her explanations were nonstop, filled with complex medical jargon, as if she's reading from a clinical textbook and offered no pause for questions or clarification. We were left so frustrated and distrusting that we had to use ChatGPT on-site just to research possible causes and try to understand what might be happening -- something no pet owner should ever have to do while in an emergency veterinary clinic. Adding insult to injury, the prices were outrageously high, completely disproportionate to the level of care, communication, or thoughtful evaluation we received. The interaction felt rushed, transactional, and almost robotic, prioritizing speed and cost over empathy or genuine concern for our pet's wellbeing. Additionally, it looks like she recently graduated from vet school yet she was the only vet on staff when she was there. Worse, reading other reviews on both Yelp and Google Reviews revealed a clear pattern: multiple pet owners describe the same condescending, intimidating, and confusing behavior from this particular veterinarian, with alarming recommendations delivered abruptly, leaving families feeling pressured, unheard, and unsupported. This is not an isolated incident -- it is a repeated pattern of behavior. Pet owners deserve honesty, clear explanations, and true compassion when their pets' lives are on the line. Dr. Schwartz fails on all counts, treating owners like they have no voice and prioritizing her own authority over guidance, empathy, or care. Warning to all pet owners: avoid this practice if you value compassion, trust, 2 way communication, and the wellbeing of your pet.

I'm trying to find the right words to adequately praise Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital…read more(MVRH), its staff, and Dr. Kelly Larabee, an Emergency Physician whose compassion and professionalism made an extraordinarily difficult day more bearable. While traveling from northern New Hampshire to Boston, we stopped in Woburn and discovered that one of our very elderly dogs could no longer get out of the car on her own. When she finally did, her rear legs collapsed beneath her. In addition to the weakness in her hind legs, she was breathing rapidly and drooling excessively. As a longtime dog owner, I recognized the look in her eyes immediately--the look that says, "It's time." Fortunately, we were less than a mile from Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital, a Level 1, 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital. We arrived without an appointment and were met by a team that was immediately welcoming, compassionate, and remarkably efficient. It was clear from the moment we walked through the door that MVRH has built a system of care designed to deliver expert treatment with both urgency and empathy. Our dog was promptly brought into the treatment area and made comfortable. Shortly thereafter, we met Dr. Kelly Larabee, whose kindness, professionalism, and genuine concern were evident from our first conversation. Dr. Larabee confirmed what we had feared but already suspected--that the time had come for our beloved companion to cross the rainbow bridge peacefully. Dr. Larabee and her team brought an extraordinary degree of humanity to veterinary emergency medicine. They treated our dog with dignity, tenderness, and respect, as though she were a member of their own family. During one of the most difficult moments a pet owner can experience, they provided not only exceptional medical care but also comfort and compassion for us. I am not sure the average pet owner--or member of the public--fully appreciates the expertise, systems of care, and operational excellence that make an institution like Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital function so effectively. Having spent much of my career in process engineering, I was deeply impressed by both the efficiency of their operations and the quality of care they delivered. Dr. Armato is not only incredibly skilled, but genuinely caring and compassionate. She spent so much time with me addressing every concern I had. She went over every detail of what to expect before I brought my dog home on Friday, and I was blown away by her kindness and thoroughness. If you're considering surgery for your pet, Dr. Armato and Theresa are exceptional. I picked my dog up at the end of the day on Friday and she's doing very well.
