Had a scare when a parrot we were birdsitting was thought to have eaten tiny MAGNETS. From a set of 500+. 500!!!! Have you ever sat down and just counted 500 slippery, rainbow magnets the size of a grain of rice while your pet peeped happily without a care in the background?? And then freaked out because 5 were missing at the end??? AUUUUGH (facepalm). $500 later, I was proven to be overreacting (dunno where those missing 5 are, but they are not in his tummy) :'D Better safe than sorry. Anyways, this was my first ever emergency vet experience and it couldn't have gone better. After arriving, we checked in and were seen immediately on a weekday night. Given typical hospital environments, I was expecting an emotionally sterile atmosphere-- yet everyone we met was so compassionate and friendly. Dr. Nikki (forgot last name) was wonderful. She reassured us every step of the process, and gave us extra advice on the parrot's overall health as well. SO grateful this center has avian care capabilities. The X-Ray was only 5 mins. We left with the biggest relief knowing that birdy was safe. From what I've been told, this is relatively abnormal for emergency vet trips, from price, to wait time, to bedside manner. I feel extremely fortunate to have such a great clinic within an hour's drive from us. read more

In reading previous reviews, I understand some have had less than great experiences, and some, like me, wonderful experiences. My dog woke me up (of course at 1 am!) wanting attention. Humm, odd, but I petted him and he sort of mewed and was trembling. So, off we go to the emergency vet. We were taken in immediately, treated with compassion, respect and with professional attention. Dr. Wong was exemplary. The tech did an initial exam for simple vitals, then Dr. Wong did a more extensive exam. Based on that she discussed possible diagnoses, outcomes and the approximate cost of each. We decided to start with the simplest--and least expensive--treatment. If that didn't work, more diagnostics would be needed. Every step of the way I was included in the decision making. I like that and the fact that, unlike other emergency vets I have been to, I was with my dog the whole time. I would return if further vet services are needed--especially if Dr. Wong is available. read more

My son found his guinea pig in the corner of his cage barely breathing and not moving. We brought him in and he was taken back immediately to be assessed. They assessed him and ultimately came to the conclusion that he likely would not recover. They were extremely attentive to my son, who my husband stated was crying the whole time he was there. They brought him tissue, and allowed him some time with his guinea pig in the quiet room before he was taken to be out to sleep. They placed cookie in a box and even spelled his name out on the box in bright yellow. In addition to that, they have him a plant in memory of cookie that we can later plant. I visited VEG for my dog at the end of his battle with cancer. We had heard great reviews from a family friend and after being quoted an 8 hour wait time at another emergency vet decided to give it a shot. We got in the door and were immediately able to sit down and see a doctor. The doctor was upfront and honest about my pets prognosis and made space for us to make a difficult but necessary decision. The whole process was the best I could possibly want for my dog. The staff and doctors were kind, knowledgeable, and respectful. The room we were in was comfortable and quiet allowing us to say goodbye in peace and on our own terms. We had a stuck "red rocket" issue with our 9mo cockapoo puppy, and our regular vet in walnut creek recommended we go to VEG to have him seen right away. Everyone was super friendly, the service was fairly quick (in and out within a little over an hour, which isn't bad for an emergency vet, plus they were in the middle of a shift change in the evening) and everyone there made me and Ollie feel welcome, safe and calm. The staff brought him a blanket to lie on and one of the staff members came over to rub his belly and give him some attention while we waited. They saw him right away to do immediate vitals and give him some ointment, and the DR later examined him and discovered it was hair that was pulling the skin back. So he trimmed the hair and then offered to shave his belly (in the future, we will have to make sure this becomes part of his normal grooming technique). Because they said it was an easy fix, they didn't charge me and even gave me ointment to take home should we need it. I can't tell you how appreciative I am for all the staff there. When leaving, Beck gave him extra puppy treats for doing such a good job. They easily could have charged me a "visit" fee or more, and instead I walked out with a happy and healthy little puppy and at ease knowing that he was better without breaking the bank. THANK YOU to the entire staff there. Ollie and I are sending treats to the office this morning as a thank you gift, and we would definitely recommend VEG to anyone seeking urgent vet care for their animal. We saw people in there with dogs, cats and even a rabbit- so they take all kinds of pets. Highly recommend. read more

I waited a few months after my turtle passed before writing this to try to understand what happened and to be fair. However, aside from my experience at VEG while seeking care and my research since my turtle's death, I think it is fair to warn the pet parents of other exotics out there. He had been in my family for over 20 years and may have been close to 30 but the life expectancy for his breed can be 50 years. He had such energy, vibrance, personality and intelligence so, it is hard to see and imagine him go out the way he did, when he needed competent help and could not heal himself this time. I initially called a vet hospital in Berkeley where the sole authority on exotics once worked but, he is gone now and I was referred to VEG to address the prolapse/tissue coming out of the opening in my turtle's tail. From the moment I entered, the vet on staff let me know she was not experienced with exotics. I should have left. She ended up taking video and pictures of the tissue and reaching out to someone off duty who she was not sure would respond because it was Sunday. Fair. I made a comment about checking on ChatGPT. I wish she had. What I got from that resource after the fact seemed more thorough and caring. It even listed steps to diagnose the issue that seemed to not have happened. It is the nonchalance that I loop in my head and that makes me hope they don't have the opportunity to put anyone else through this. He was triaged low and everyone else was a priority, including an employees(who was sobbing) cat. Everything just felt very nonchalant and they seemed to lean into their ignorance about turtles. She told me that the other vet advised her to just snip the growth off and because everyone else was a priority, she sent me away because who knew when they would get to him. When he was ready to go, she let me know that she snipped him and gave him no pain meds or antibiotics because the growth was not connected to nerves. No regard or curiosity for the underlying cause. A day and a half later, I brought him back to an equally uncaring and underwelming vet on staff who wasted my time talking for an hour while doing nothing. I asked for X-rays to be done since I found him on his back in the water and it took forever. That costed hundreds of dollars and, although, I could hear his heart beating over a microphone , I knew that he had died in my hands on the way there. They knew too but talked and acted as if they were humoring me but just not going to invest any effort into him. The doctor even talked about a treatment plan that we could try to address potential pneumonia from fluid in the lungs (we still don't know and no one is curious about the underlying cause of the initial visit). There was no way I was leaving him there to be dead or finish dying alone while they pretended to treat him. Turtles and probably other exotics basically have to keep themselves alive and I regret taking mine there twice. If I had left that Sunday and tried a place that seemed more caring and competent I could have at least had a comparison and maybe more thorough medicine. I understand that most do know anything about turtles, including the resident "exotics" vet. The majority of vets I have taken my turtles to when it was not an emergency made me grateful that they do keep themselves alive. But he couldn't anymore as he aged and needed help and I feel like I walked him into an early death. Despite the unique complexity of turtles, I also would not take a cat or dog to this hospital either. read more

During this difficult time I want to extend my appreciation to the front line staff , the Vet Techs and the Veterinarians, especially Dr Jessica Perkins. When I brought LaLa , I knew and the staff treated him so diligently and with so much care. He died hours later in his home surrounded by all of us. They don't know the first thing about birds, and they were doing more harm than good by stressing out and mishandling our conure. That is, once they worked up the courage to even touch him. This was truly the best "worst" experience, and VEG Pleasant Hill is absolutely outstanding. I honestly wish I could take my pets here for primary care. I brought in my 16-year-old cat, Missy, who has both CKD and diabetes, after she started declining. We quickly learned that her kidney levels had skyrocketed, and we made the difficult decision to hospitalize her for two days of intensive IV therapy. Any situation this serious comes with a heavy financial burden, but the level of care, compassion, and service we received at VEG far outweighed the cost. From the very beginning, the staff was absolutely amazing. Every nurse and doctor we encountered was clearly passionate about their work and deeply cared for every pet in their charge. They were kind, attentive, and incredibly accommodating checking on Missy hourly, providing constant updates, and giving her genuine love along with the best care I've ever experienced at a veterinary hospital. Missy absolutely adored our night nurse, Taylor Plum. Taylor was truly exceptional. Whether Missy knew her in a past life or just sensed her kindness, she was completely calm and at ease in her care. Taylor was so intuitive and aware, understanding that Missy is an elderly cat dealing with more than just an emergency. She was gentle, patient, and deeply compassionate. Watching Missy try to rub against her while Taylor drew blood eased my anxiety in ways I can't fully describe. Beyond the incredible staff, the facility itself is remarkable. The open-concept hospital allows you to see everything happening, which builds so much trust and transparency. Because Missy required an extended overnight stay, I was able to stay with her the entire time, which meant everything to me. The room included a pull-out bed, and the staff went out of their way to help me get settled and comfortable. The facility is immaculate, and the thoughtful touches like bathroom amenities, washcloths, and small comfort items made an otherwise stressful and emotional hospital stay feel a bit more calming and homey. I truly feel like I could go on and on about VEG Pleasant Hill. I am beyond grateful for the care, compassion, and respect they showed both Missy and me during such a difficult time. The staff was friendly (except for the Monday morning vet tech, Alex) and I'm glad that you get to stay with your pet. I think the open concept might be a little overwhelming though. I'm thankful that they got my Cushing's dog who was diagnosed with diabetes/DKA out of DKA. Now for the part that is concerning, I got a call from my vet on Saturday morning that my dog now has diabetes, in fact is in DKA and needs insulin asap so I brought my dog in on Saturday afternoon with mild DKA but with ketones. Saturday, he got IV/insulin, bloodwork, etc. but where it got concerning was Sunday night around 9pm, I mentioned to the vet tech about my dogs breathing and that it was heavier, open mouth and wet cough. While they were preparing a room for us to stay overnight the vet tech had the vet look him over which she did an ultrasound and said she didn't see anything alarming. At this point we went into the room they had prepared for us to sleep and he was still having the breathing issue and wet cough. At 1am it was mentioned to the vet again about him having a hard time breathing and once again the vet did an ultrasound and found nothing wrong, we went back into the prepared room to sleep. At 4am, the vet tech came in and noticed him struggling to breathe and that his insulin line had a kink in it and he hadn't been getting his insulin for the past 3 hours. This time they actually took him for x-rays and put him in the oxygen chamber. The x-rays were sent off for a specialist to read and they believed that he had a blood clot in the lungs (PTE). Dogs with Cushings/DKA have a HIGHER RISK OF GETTING BLOOD CLOTS! The symptoms that had been mentioned to the vet on TWO occasions and over 7 hours weren't identified as PTE, which would have been by an experienced emergency vet. Around 6:30am the vet mentioned that blood thinners would be a treatment for the blood clot but wanted to discuss with the vet coming in at 730am. Anticoagulants should have been started and quickly but never was. The morning vet came on and around 1pm told me that they can no longer care for my dog and that I should take him to Sage where there are specialists. I took my dog to Sage and they started him on anticoagulants immediately and oxygen and cared for my dog for the next 3 days and I was finally able to bring my dog home. This was my 2nd bad experience with VEG and regret trying them again. I feel like VEG might be able to handle simple situations, but I'd be cautious bringing a pet with other health concerns, true emergency, senior pet, etc. read more

3 weeks ago, I walked through the doors of VEG and was breaking down. My 12 year old Yorkie had never been a patient there, but had suffered a bunch of seizures recently with a brain tumor as the likely cause, and I made the difficult decision that morning to have him euthanized at home in the afternoon with another vet. My wife and I tried everything we could to give him his dose of anti seizure medication that morning, but he absolutely refused to take it. I didn't want him to suffer any more seizures before he would cross the rainbow bridge, so I went to the nearest veterinary office pleading for assistance to help administer his medication. The staff was incredibly welcoming and compassionate. While I had to fill out the intake forms and meet with the Doctor, they ultimately had 2 caring young ladies give him the medicine (that I brought from home) at no cost and reassured me I was doing the right thing. I was a mess that day, so I can't remember any names, but I think one of them was Alix. VEG really helped me out and I just want to thank the team there from the bottom of my heart. I can't speak to the cost of a visit, but I believe it's comparable with other competitors, and I would not hesitate to bring a pet here should I ever get another dog and have a future emergency. read more

As a pet owner with an emergency I cannot tell you the difference it makes when you make one phone call, receive compassion and empathy on the other end, they were my second choice when calling Vet ER's around 10 PM, the employee who simply said to me at the end of the phone call "Well we will be here if you need anything." did it for me, I didn't wait for the local Vet ER to call me back, and they haven't yet, it's now the next day, 3 PM. I drove the 20-25 minutes to VEG instead of 5-8 minutes to the closest Vet ER, simply for the compassionate service. That automatically does it for me, kindness, empathy and compassion in time of crisis. The entire staff from the phone call, to arriving, the Vet tech, and the Vet were very kind, attentive, caring, supportive, compassionate, empathetic and very clear in the steps needed to find the root cause. For anyone looking to have support, kindness and compassion throughout a stressful situation, I highly recommend VEG, the prices are reasonable given the procedures they are performing. My dog had been missing since Christmas. Miraculously, she found her own way home after 15 days. She was emaciated, covered in ticks, and had a bad limp. After being turned away from our own vet (Diablo View Veterinary) and another, VEG ER welcomed us in with open arms. I was desperate for help. The staff here literally laid on the floor with me picking ticks off for 1.5 hours. We got blood work, and also determined that our dog had a badly broken femur in multiple places. The surgery was expensive, and I was concerned I would have no choice, but to euthanize my dog. It seemed so wrong to put her down after all she had been through. VEG ER was able to put me in touch with a wonderful surgeon. I can't thank them enough for helping us. read more

The emergency room is not a place you want to be, be for the human or the pet. I was thoroughly impressed with the set-up of the facility. It is an open concept where the treatment area can be seen by all. There were also private consultation rooms too. I was able to be with my pet during the entire process which was both comforting to me and my pet. I called prior to going in and was sent a link via text so that I could fill out all relevant information for my pet. Upon arrival I was brought to an area where a nurse came by and took all her vitals. Then a doctor came by and gave her a quick check just to be sure she was comfortable. I did have to wait a bit, it was quite busy, but I was ok with it as I was with my pet the whole time. Once the doctor came and gave her diagnosis we were able to go home with the medications. The next day I received a very thorough report of my pet's visit. Definitely not a place I want to visit but if I had to this is where I would take my pet. read more

We brought in our 2-year-old golden retriever (66lbs) for what turned out to be a simple stomach issue. After expensive X-rays, ultrasound, and bloodwork, we were told it was just gastrointestinal and she'd be fine. They prescribed 300mg Gabapentin but gave no clear instructions on dosage timing. The technician was kind, but the doctor was dismissive and not very concerned. After following their directions, our dog had her first seizure ever the next morning. At another emergency hospital and with her primary vet, we learned the dose was far too high for her size and condition. What should have been a manageable stomach issue turned into a preventable crisis because of poor prescribing and lack of communication. We left feeling frustrated, shaken, and very disappointed in the level of care. read more

I give a 4.5 to the staff who were wonderful and zero stars for affordability. If cost is not a consideration, you will be fine here. Facility is huge and shiny clean. Prices are outrageous. $593 for my dog to be seen for a few minutes by a vet out in the open area and have a vet nurse clean the wound. 1. Don't go here unless you are ready to shell out $225 just to walk in the door. 2. Get an estimate for everything. I could not imagine it would cost $140 to have a small wound cleaned - if I had known, I would've declined that service and done it myself, again, as I had already done before I came and would do so continuously for the days. 3. Tell them any prescriptions recommended or required you will fill at a pharmacy, Costco or Chewy. I was handed three prescriptions 2 of which I did not need. One was over $120 for a 7 day course of amoxicillin. My bad for not being smart enough to tell them I would fill prescriptions myself. And I should've given them back and ask them to be removed from my bill, but I was so shocked I didn't even think to do that. 4. Go to a non-corporate emergency room vet. read more

The pricing is transparent, they send you a text with the quote before just going ahead with the tests, and are willing to work with you if you would like to go about it step by step vs running standard panels. You're allowed to be involved with almost every aspect of your pet's care, we held our kitty during ultrasound, blood draw, fluid injections etc...which made the experience less stressful because I wasn't just sitting in a waiting room wondering if my pet was okay. They have private rooms available for consult if you are needing a quiet space to talk, especially if you're upset like I was. I cried a large portion of my time there due to state of my pet, and never once was I made to feel like my feelings didn't matter or that I was being over the top. I have had to come here 3 times. We had a really bad ER experience in January and someone recommended this location bc we could stay with our cat (or pet) the entire time. Which makes a world of difference to me. The first visit we met with Dr Sana. She was helpful, informative and answered all our questions. The second time I went we met with Dr Tracy. This visit was a long one as the ER was busy and had some emergency situations in progress to handle. They let us stay in a room with our cat until things settled. While you wait you are offered coffee, water and snacks which was really a nice addition if you have to wait with your pet in the ER. Each doctor answered our questions and made us feel comfortable throughout the entire process. I had to return the next day for an ultra sound for my car and they went through the entire process with you. I was able to go into the ultra sound with him which brought me a lot of comfort and to my cat as well. The prices are ER prices but the instructions, attention, and comfort you feel throughout the process was so refreshing. We have recommended this place to all our friends and neighbors who have fur babies. They take all kinds of animals! read more

This place is solid. One of our cats ate a 12-inch ribbon, and we knew we had no choice but to take him to the vet. There's a kind of defensive coldness to most veterinary places, from the reception, to the treatment of the animals, to the way your pet is taken "in the back" for all procedures. VEG is completely different. Open floor plan, and you can be there for the procedures. This makes such a huge difference for pet and owner that I don't understand why more places aren't this way. This was our first time at this new clinic. We had to bring our 12 yr old boy, Bruno, in for supportive care after he stopped eating and was experiencing significant gastric upset. While we were there, Bruno's situation became more dire and in the early evening, we had to make the difficult decision to let him go. Throughout this excruciating experience, the doctors and staff treated us and Bruno with the utmost compassion. The clinic is open concept and you can witness the staff with their patients first-hand. We were so impressed by the manner in which the patients were treated. It is evident that they are true animal-lovers. There are also private rooms available with human cots so loved ones can stay together. Overall my cat received good care except for the fact that she was waiting around because they didn't not have the Personnel or the surgery Suite that they needed at the time she was ready for surgery. We recently had a difficult visit involving a pet that ultimately led to us putting said pet down. The staff was terrific despite it being a sensitive discussion. It can't be easy having to have discussions with families day in and day out about difficult decisions about their pets. I appreciate the care their team afforded us. read more

VEG is an amazing line of veterinary hospitals, totally dedicated to saving animals lives. It's hard to find, (and almost unbelievable that I had) such an empathetic, human, and professional environment to care for my sick kitty. Everyone was so on top of her care, as well as each patient who'd come in. Special thanks to Dr.Parker & Ben, who were our initial attendants and made us feel very at home. Needless to say the rest of the staff is spectacular as well, everyone very approachable and kind. The facilities were not only immaculate but there were plenty of snacks, as well as very comfortable overnight rooms. Special Staff comes all the way from out of town should you need an indepth ultrasound, surgery, etc. These lovely individuals are truly committed to our pets, and even wildlife. If your pet is feeling ill, go to VEG. Its a no brainer. read more
