Our first night in Ferndale, we ate at The Vi. We had a couple of chardonnays from a local winery, Dogwood. Pretty good. Dinner was more than satisfying -- salmon, ahi, perfectly done and interesting vegetables, duck spring rolls, and a cheerful waitress named Nicole who recently moved here from San Diego. We sat in the bad children's space - an intimate table for 2 in what was the area of a bay window. An area that is enclosed; as Nicole explained she needs to announce her arrival or she startles the guest with his back to the doorway. Nice and quiet. Thought I would've liked a parade of people walking by on the sidewalk that was our view. But then we'd look like window displays; at least the 2 older women having dinner the next day in that spot looked like that. Dinner in the tavern at The Vi a couple of nights later. My partner had the crab cakes: a disappointment and he was bothered by pomegranate seeds in this salad. We each had a glass of local wine, mine from Ferndale (frog wildcat red). I ate what I wanted -half a roast chicken (lemon slices under the skin; will need to remember that) and the good veggies (Chinese peas, bok choy, tiny broccoli) that I'd had the first night in town. Partner got the crab cakes comped since he'd asked the waitress to let the chef know that they were too salty, didn't taste crabby enough. The rating -- 4 stars for the first night; 2 the second because of the crab cakes, so an average of 3. We did find out that the regular chef was off our second night, so perhaps that was the problem? Shouldn't happen, though, since repeat customers except the quality to remain the same. read more

We were seated inside, best restaurant atmosphere in town. The food was fantastic. We ordered the Chicken pot pie and the Grilled Chicken entre. Both were very well seasoned and we were pleased. We both had dinner salads with the homemade ranch dressing, absolutely fabulous! I don't understand the low review rating or negative reviews. What an amazing find! We took a detour through Ferndale and ended up getting hungry. We found the VI Restaurant, the staff was so super friendly and the building itself was just gorgeous. We ordered the Mac and cheese as an appetizer and I haven't found many better. For the main course we ordered the clam pasta and the burger, both were perfectly prepared and served with generous portions. I prefer a thicker French fry, but that is purely just a preference. We are looking forward to our next trip, and it will include a return visit to VI. read more

Food was good. Service ok. Make a reservation or don't go. I stopped in the second night for a cup of coffee and a scoop of ice cream. I was told they were too busy and I could not be served. Really? I wouldn't ever recommend. How can you be too busy to pour a cup of coffee? read more

The pianist, Harry smith, played rhapsody in blue. We had the sea food plasta paired with their house savignon Blanc and all was well with the world. Checked in to Victorian Inn last minute as the restaurant was closing. They allowed us to place an order and were incredibly accommodating considering they had just about closed for the evening. The bartender was friendly, pleasant, and engaging. Food was served to go and eaten in our room and was delicious. Our entire trip to Ferndale and The Victorian Inn was an unplanned detour, we were pleasantly surprised on all fronts. read more

My third time here and will definitely be back plenty more times. The hotel and restaurant are a must everytime I come to the coast. The food is always good the bar rocks. And the staff have always been awesome. So if you are ever in the Pacific NW stop at ferndale and stay at the old victorian inn and eat at the Vi. read more

Places that are new spend a long time being hit and miss. A group of us went not long after they opened a couple of years ago, and it did not make my list of places to go back to. But I took my daughter for an early dinner tonight, and everything was spot on. We like to eat "tapas style" and order lots of appetizers to share. The sweet potato fries, baked brie, and shrimp cocktail were all perfect. The crab cakes were some of the best I've had. I cannot stand bell peppers with seafood because it's over powering, so these were divine with big chunks of crab in them! The lime creme fraiche was just the right addition for the cakes. Our server was sweet, and my Frog's Alley wine finished everything with just the right acid & fruit. Thank you for making our last dinner out in Humboldt memorable:) read more

We were completely ignored when we walked in and stood at the reception desk while workers kept on working without even acknowledging us. Then when we finally did get seated, they weren't sure if they had items on the menu left and had to check. Then said they had to wait to give us bread while they warmed it up. When that was finally delivered it was cold! We even had to wait for water as well. We sat for a good 45/50 minutes and never got our salad, let alone our main course. Wish I had read the other reviews first - I see that many others had the same frustrating experience. How rude! read more

Went here for Mother's Day. First of all, the Mimosas come in all different size flutes but you pay the same price. My daughter's was twice as big as mine. Minus one star. Our poached eggs were as hard as hard boiled eggs - all 6 of them! We asked for new ones and after 5 mins he brought us 2! Still hard! Minus another star. My daughter's fiance got an omelet. The mushrooms and spinach were raw. Seriously, how long does it take to saute spinach and mushroom? That's not the worst. The cheese was cut up in little squares in the omelet, not melted. Minus another star. And I'm still upset about the mimosa. Minus another star! Don't go! Next time I will try Shaw's down the street. read more

We made reservations on a Wednesday for 6 PM. We arrived a little early and were seated promptly. Tawnya was our server and we were very pleased with her bubbly personality and attention to detail. I ordered a cup of clam chowder which frankly was one of the best I've ever had, and I've had many! My wife ordered a small salad with an apple vinaigrette dressing which was fresh and tasty. She ordered the wild grilled king salmon and was exceptionally pleased. See the accompanying photo. I ordered the Portuguese paella which was perfect. It has been mistakenly put in with the photo of the grilled king salmon but anyone who knows should be able to tell the difference. Frankly it was absolutely wonderful. The shrimp and scallops were cooked perfectly and not over done. The rice was full of flavor! You couldn't ask for a better prepared paella. The portions of seafood can only be described as generous. I told our Tawnya, that the chef certainly knew what he was doing. She replied that Aaron and Donovan were in the kitchen tonight. We topped off the meal with Tahitian Creme Brûlée and homemade vanilla ice cream that was as smooth as a gelato. The total came out to $90.51 and was worth every penny!!! read more

we had lunch at this restaurant and the food was amazing. Caeser salad and Artisan Macaroni and cheese. Be prepared to wait for a long time as they are not staffed sufficiently. A quick lunch took and hour and a half. Love the ambience, we will go back. we want to stay the night there soon. Never heard of this place, but I loved it. Went into the jewelry store and the man was not friendly, but maybe he doesn't like his job. read more

The place was a little confusing upon entering, but once seated the service, cleanliness and meals were ON POINT! Their filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes was superb, real tender and cooked perfectly. The service is awful. Employees are disinterested and slow. One sat at the bar and ate while a busy room was waiting for the other employee to serve them all. Lovely on the outside. Hollow on the inside. They have a great selection of local wines by the glass, but don't bother asking about them. The manager, clearly annoyed, told our server to "look at the back of the bottle" when he relayed our question about the Moonstone Crossing "Serenity." The server returned and said it was a blend but he "had no idea" what was in it. I guess I'll have to find out for myself. It was ten minutes before a server came over (also was the bartender, so not exactly his fault), and then another ten after we ordered for them to realize they were out of the clams. I had the open face tuna melt & home made potato chips it tasted great. Here is how it went over all, food tasted great +1, ambiance a very old clean and beautifully well kept building +1, at the door greeting +1 even though she seemed busy, -2 for not being busy enough for the very slow service and no drop in notice to explain or account for the food taking so long (35 min after order was in). Many tables for two servers, understandable service attendance but only the one waitress appeared to be working. Maybe this place is a better choice for a fancy dinner. read more

We went here after a successful visit last Christmas. This Christmas meal was a disappointment. We were completely ignored after we were seated. After many attempts to flag a waitress, we finally got a harried lady who didn't know and could not locate our server. 30 minutes to receive water and bread. As to the meal, the best thing was the brie en croute appetizer. Salmon cold, clams had gone bad, and drinks took forever. What the VI serves under the name of Bouillabaisse is not even close to what a real bouillabaisse is. So disappointed. read more

Staying in Ferndale has been the best part of a road trip with an old friend. The Redwood Suites were perfect for us--right in town. The suites are part of the Victorian Inn. To check in, go to the Victoria Inn, on Main Street one block away. The VI Restaurant is a fine dining experience for the evening meal. A special grilled salmon with chile glaze was divine to me. The greens and rice were a good pairing. My friend had the roast chicken with fingerling potatoes and the same excellent greens but finished with a vinegar that she raved about. Neither of us had room for dessert. The next morning we went back to the VI because breakfast was included with our hotel stay. Again, wonderful omelets that started our day with a smile. The service at the VI was excellent on both occasions. We were happy to see Toscha again as our server for breakfast. She checked us into the Redwood Suites the day before and gave us so many details of "not-to-be-missed" places in the Ferndale area. She is a gem we hope the owners appreciate! read more

I ordered a Cobb salad with dressing on the side, about 1 1/2T of dressings. I asked for more dressing which they brought. What they didn't mention is that they charge $.50 for the extra dressing. When we got our bill, sure enough they did charge us for the dressing. I complained but it didn't do any good. The manager said that was their policy and too bad. This experience left a very bad taste. We won't go back again. read more

Stopped by at this quaint town lost in time to eat, surprisingly, most restaurants are closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The place is gorgeous and a bit pricey for my taste, but decided to stay and indulge. I had the chicken caprese sandwich and didn't care for it. In my opinion it was dry and the pesto on it tasted more like mayo with some ground up basil, very bland. My husband had the scallops and he was very pleased with his dish. read more

Went here with family for Christmas dinner. It was a set menu with several options of side dishes and main entrées. We all chose the prime rib, which was delicious. They ran out of a few side dishes but made up for it with an amazing fried artichoke appetizer. They were super busy but still managed to fit us in with pretty last minute reservations and all of the staff were very nice and accomodating. Had lunch at the bar - our server, Marcy, was very sweet, but they had a 12-top coming in, so she was kinda rushed getting set up for them, thus we waited too long for drink refills after our food arrived. Here's a note to every server everywhere - your income will increase if you make sure all your guests have beverages when their food arrives. Every time I go visit my daughter at HSU I make sure to go to Ferndale and the Victorian Inn. We have celebrated my older daughters birthday there and eaten there (dinner) a couple times and it was always very good. However, I was up there (I'm from San Diego) and the 3 of us went for lunch. What a disaster! Our waiter was a mess. Forgot to put the appetizers on so after waiting (and starving) for about 20 minutes after ordering, we asked if we could get them before our meal. He said he had "gooned out" and forgot to tell the cook that the order was to be eaten before the main meal (thus the name "appetizer"). Then, my daughter asked for no tomatoes on her burger. Well, there were tomatoes and they were UNDER the cheese, so she had to peel the cheese off too. Then , he just literally forgot to order my food! Seriously, did not bring me anything! I guess he thought I just wanted to stare at my daughters eating! Anyway, I still had to pay $54.00 for a horrible lunch,and literally left and had to go eat lunch somewhere else! That should NOT happen. Waste of time and money and ruined all my good memories of this place. Bummer. read more

We ate here twice. The food really was good! Fresh and dessert was amazing. Staff was attentive and I would totally return. We ate elsewhere tonight and the comparison made me realize how good it was lol My only complaint is we stopped in for a drink at the bar and it was THE WORST midori sour I have ever had. 80% sour ( which I think was just straight lemon juice) and 20% midori. Love the Artisan Mac and Cheese is all local amazing cheeses .... So good, you'll want to lick the bowl!!! Love there Crab Cakes, Seared Sea Scallops and the calm chowder is awesome, I have had the fresh Chicken Mushroom pot pie before so yum!!!! Excellent fresh breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a quaint Victorian town in the (far) northern California. Excellent Mac and Cheese, and will "work with you" if you are a vegetarian. This is probably the best place in Ferndale with reasonable hours. read more

This restaurant is overpriced and definitely does not deliver a high quality meal. The service is not welcoming and the owner is less than gracious. It's really sad that one of the two main restaurants available in town is not somewhere where you can go have a couple of drinks and have fun with friends any longer.
