Excellent pizza. Great ambient for the family o any type of party.

After days of Puerto Rican food, I was craving Italian and so my husband and I headed to Via Appia which is just steps away from the Marriott where we were staying. We weren't sure what to expect since it's in tourist central. This place was always packed whenever we walked by though. We ordered half a bottle of wine. I was very tickled that the wine bottle "chiller" came in a form of a plastic jug which you normally see servers use to pour water. Our server was incredibly nice. We ordered a salad and a pasta and told him that we were going to share them (we were having lunch at 3pm), he told us that he would take care of splitting the items into two portions for us. Our salad came with garlic bread. There was nothing superb about the salad but it was comforting. The garlic bread was very simple and drizzled a little with olive oil and garlic bits. We really loved the linguine with white clam sauce. Although our entree was splitted between the two of us, each of our plates still had a good amount of pasta. They were also generous with the chopped clams. We also ordered a latte each after our meal and told our server that we would like them when we were finished with our wine. He was attentive and brought the lattes just when we finished our wine. Overall, this is not a fancy schmancy Italian spot. At best, it offers comfort Italian food in a comfort setting. Do you need fancy Italian food all the time? Probably not and Via Appia fits the bill when you want comfort simple Italian. We would have been back if our trip was longer but until our next trip to Condado, we will be keeping Via Appia in mind. read more

Neighborhood favorite that i've been frequenting since i was in my mother's womb - literally. Every time I go back home to PR (I currently live in Miami) this is the tradition. Awesome pizza, chicken/veal/eggplant parmigiana, gorgonzola side salad, baked ziti and sangria by the pitcher. Great for friends, family, reunions, and hang-outs. Gets packed with locals on the weekends, but tourists are always welcome. read more

We came here twice for dinner during our five days in San Juan. The food was delicious and our servers were very nice. The outdoor seating area was pleasant and we simply enjoyed everything about this restaurant. Our only surprise was that service was a bit slow, even to get our bill at the end, but we were on "island time" and it didn't bother us. We walked along along Avenida Ashford looking for a decent place and decided to try this one, with limited success. Had a bisteca with tostones and a seafood pasta. Seafood did not taste fresh, and the bisteca and tostones were swimming in oil, had to dab a bunch of it out with a napkin, taking care to do so when the nice old man waiter was not looking, because nice as he was, he was also a bit gruff with us. Sangria tasted flat too. If the prices were half what they were, then maybe this would be a decent hit-and-run lunch spot, but not highly recommended otherwise. read more

Dinner here was perfect! We dined al fresco and enjoyed the relaxed environment. Even with a line out the door, you aren't rushed through your meal. The food was simple and delicious with fresh ingredients. We enjoyed the calamari, the simple house salad and the Via Appia pizza. I highly recommend the cheese flan to finish your meal...it was one of the best I've ever had. With a limited number of meal occasions on our trip, we're already thinking about getting back here once more before we head home. read more

Cool little place in the condado area of the touristy san juan.... 5 minute walk from la concha hotel.... nice bar inside.... i had lunch there and ate the lasagne.... old dudes as waiters.... they were cool. good food, comfy atmosphere. good place to chill and enjoy a beer and a meal. I'd give this place two stars at best. There's nothing exciting or even interesting about the menu. It tasted like fast food Italian: boring, frozen, and heavy on the cheese and oil. The service was very slow, though they were very busy, so I can look past that. My wife had a sausage calzone and the sausage was very rubbery and blah. I had the baked ziti and it was swimming in oil and just didn't have the fresh, chunky tomato sauce I was looking for. We were both kind of bummed. read more

Nervous about having Italian food in Puerto Rico, but it was rather good! I had sausage and peppers wit fettucine, which was delicious. Son had prosciutto and onion pizza, and loved it. Husband enjoyed chorizo calzone,daughter had spaghetti and meatballs. All left happy! read more

Decent Italian food in the Condado. Good garlic bread. Baked ziti was okay. Definitely edible, but nothing I would rave over. So decent, but nothing outstanding. Everyone said to get the pizza so we had a pepperoni pizza. I thought it was very good but definitely not going to compete with some of the best pizza places in NY. It's true that the pizza could use more sauce and the crust was not crispy. However, the cheese is of very high quality and overall it was a good meal. We found this place after arriving at our hotel and learning they didn't have a room ready to put us in. To kill some time we went out looking for lunch. Based on lonely planet's suggestion, we found Via Appia. The restaurant is no frills compared to others in the area, but it was exactly what I was looking for and the lonely planet reviews were right on. The waiters were gentlemanly and friendly (despite the inside looking more like a deli than a restaurant), service was fast, and the food was good. This is not somewhere I'd go for a fancy dinner, but for a reliable lunch spot, this is a sure bet. read more

I was skeptical about going here but my husband wanted to try it so I surrendered. My skepticism however was true. We were served rotten calamari. Marinara sauce was bitter. Pizza dough was of good texture but bland. We ordered a shrimp pizza & ended up getting what was overly cheesy with the smallest shrimp about half the size of a baby's fingernail . There was a soccer game on so we had to get up and get our own water Appetizer & pizza as the waiter was too busy watching the game. They recommended the sangria to wash down my pizza, as soon as I drank the first glass i knew it was a great idea! They have a relaxing terrace, which is were I sat; but they have indoor seating too. As good as it gets for price and location in Condado! Family friendly, amazing Sangria and truly a gem in the city of over-priced eateries. We took our two young boys (age 6 and 3) and enjoyed traditional Italian on the outside patio. I highly recommend to either go later as we did (after 7:30) or earlier as it appears to be a local favorite. Husband had the chicken parm, which he loved. I had the linguine with white clam sauce. Fresh clams and yummy sauce. Children had spaghetti with marina and gave rave reviews. The Sangria comes by the pitcher (large or medium). I recommend the large! Definitely homemade. Also a big slice of homemade chocolate cake for dessert was a big hit with the kids. We would definitely eat here again. read more

The owner was very very welcoming, the bartender was very helpful I. Local attractions we may like. He was also very attentive for which drink we may like. The food was fairly good, some of the best pizza I've ever had. The seafood was also delicious, and the handmade gnocchi did not disappoint. read more

I did not have pizza but I can say don't have the pancakes. There is a better place for pancakes up the street. Theirs are dense and not very tasty. My friend had their oatmeal, which tasted fine but was small and expensive. read more

The cheese and the mushrooms on the pizza are fake. The smell of the place sticks with you. They should buy an extractor. We smelled like pizza for 3 days after going there. They need to wash the utensils. We feel ashamed for the tourist. read more

We tried the restaurant based on the recommendations and was not disappointed! The sangria was refreshing and good. I loved the Italian sausage and green peppers plate. It was perfect and did not give you that "heavy" feel. My wife had the chicken parmesan sandwich that needed a little more sauce, so you may need to request additional on the side. Came by for dinner after a co-worker recommended. Ordered a Via Appia large pizza with meatballs and garlic bread as an appetizer. To begin I am a bit of a foodie so I might be picky. I asked if the meatballs were homemade and the waiter said yes, so I wanted to try. Waiter brought to meatballs in red sauce with a basket of oven toasted French bread slices with oil and garlic. I was not impressed by the appearance of the bread, I was expecting something more like knots, but had good flavor. The meatballs were medium sized and looked homemade but neither the sauce or meatballs had a lot of flavor, had to add parm to get more flavor. Now on to the pizza. Looked good had a nice toasted thin crust, with meatball slices, pepperoni, sausage, green peppers and onions. Again sauce did not have much flavor nor did the cheese. I really like Grande cheese on my pizza, just really gives it a nice flavor. The same meatballs were used, pepperoni did not have the snap, and dough was limp on the pickup. So it was ok, not horrible, for the price was ok. Now the coconut flan was very good, that I must say. I was impressed at the favor and texture of the flan. read more

Boo. Based on the Yelp reviews, this place looked pretty good and we decided to try it out. Disappointment ensued. The service wasn't terrible and the waiters were friendly for as busy as they were. The food, on the other hand, was a little sad. If you're looking for good, fresh, authentic Italian food, DO NOT come here. If you're looking for a bland, pre-packaged, oily mess, this is definitely the place for you. I ordered a sausage calzone and what I got was a paste filled calzone with some gray bits of meat. This place has friendly service. We were a group of 6, and some of us got great food, and a few of us really didn't. Standouts: The octupus salad, chicken chicharones, and the GROUPER! The grouper was the winner. It came with a sad looking pasta side, but the main course was cooked perfectly and was tasty. Avoid: The mussels-they were really tough. The steak was a cheap cut of meat, overcooked, and flooded with onions. One of us ordered a chicken dish that had a spanish name (sorry I can't remember what it was called), but it was a bland chicken breast with nothing special going on. Forks and dishes were kinda dirty, but the server replaced them. We're italians so we didn't order the italian options knowing our standards are really high for that cuisine. MY boyfriend and i ordered weekly's special linguine clam sauce and it was VERY terrible. Clams were stink like they were from can. The taste of our entrees was bland. We ordered one linguine and one spaghetti but somehow they gave us the same "soaky noodles" like it's made for sick people, yikes! was highly recommended so we stopped by LOCATION: 4 stars - on Condado's main drag, Avenida Ashford PARKING: 3 stars - street. don't think has valet AMBIANCE: 3 stars - casual, in line with the quality of cuisine being offered SERVICE: 3.5 stars - i think maybe we confused the waiter cuz we had ordered pizza and fried chicken, but only pizza came out. then we asked about our fried chicken, so he put in that order. we said we'd eat it at the restaurant, but it came out in a 'to-go' bag. so we opened it up and ate some chicken straight out of the bag. no biggie - other than that, service was attentive FOOD: 3 stars - APPIA PIZZA: onion/bell pepper/peperoni/mushroom: tasty. crust thickness b/w new york thin crust and like a dominoes pizza. dough was just ok. - FRIED CHICKEN: was crispy, but did not like the flavor. need to ask what oil they fry their chicken in when i go back. would like to come back and try out the pasta menu. read more
