Con: bed was so horribly soft it killed our backs, housekeeping made the bed and changed the towels but that's it. we timed them one day and they were out in less than 10 mins. They never vacuumed the dirt we brought in from our hikes, and never washed the bathroom. They also never cleaned crumbs on our table. The free breakfast is ok, but we went to Poppa Joe's and paid barely anything from the best breakfast and wonderful service. We had dinner there once which was forgettable.TV kept going out, which wouldn't matter except there's absolutely nothing to do here at night but watch tv. Too expensive for the location and all the above. I can only say it was a very cool old Historic place to stay... They need to get harder mattresses and pillows, fix the TV reception, clean the rooms and direct people to Papa Joe's to eat. If you have to be here then I guess I recommend the place. If you can keep driving? I would recommend holding out. It is a lovely small Historic Town though. Just not much to do or see... Our stay at Victorian Inn was almost magical. The place is absolutely lovely. There are antiques everywhere. There are probably ten varieties of tea and coffee available 24/7 in a special guest room, which also has a cabinet full of games. Our room--Olivia's Room--was about twice the size of a typical hotel/motel room, and infinitely more attractive and comfortable. Everything you could possibly want was provided, and all with class. Want to listen to white noise, or some comforting sounds, while falling asleep in their super comfortable beds? There's a machine that does just that on the nightstand. Want to look out over lovely downtown Ferndale through a large bay window? Yep, that is there. Want a great restaurant on the premises? Check. Great service? Yep. And even though they were not doing the regular breakfast, each morning we received a croissant, yogurt, power bar, cheese, butter, jam, and coffee. I could go on for another fifty lines, but how about this: My wife and I are already making plans to return...and we NEVER go to the same place twice. read more

I highly recommend the Victorian Inn. Our room was spacious and comfortable. I traveled with 3 of my closest friends. My friends rooms were also very nice but some what smaller. When we mentioned it, the owners were quick to offer another room in the hotel. Very accommodating of them but not necessary. Our first night I think we could have been the only guests. This added to the charm. We enjoyed the upstairs community/game room. There was 24hrs of hot beverages available. A refrigerator to store our snacks and wine and dishes provided. The Victorian Inn will take you back in time. A full breakfast was served from your choice of the menu. It was delicious and fresh. It is a great location at the end of town. We stayed at the Victorian Inn in Ferndale for a few days for our Anniversary. This has been on our bucket list for a long time. Well I must say we were not disappointed. The stay at the VI was awesome. The people working their, from the front desk to the bartenders were so nice and helpful. We even met the owner who was kind and gracious. I am what you can say, picky to a fault sometimes where I stay, because cleanliness and safety is my top priority. The room was clean and the food was beyond awesome. The free breakfast was more than expected. It is not an usual continental breakfast, you get to order off a breakfast menu. They offer, eggs,sausage,bacon, waffles, granola and yogurt in a parfait and more! Everything we ordered from appetizers to dinners were taken up 10 notches. If I would have anything negative to say about the inn, it would be that dusting in the hallways to the rooms upstairs could use some dusting and the crown molding could be restained and made to shine like it is suppose to. Other than that, I loved the place. Would go back again if we get time for a little get away. Also, you can do the walking tour around the town.It's an enjoyable 5 or 6 miles. My husband and I recently stayed at the Victorian Inn for a weekend getaway to celebrate his birthday. We stayed in the Victorian Parlor room (210) and it is gorgeous. The rooms are all beautiful here, and there is a common area where guests can refrigerate items, make complimentary tea or coffee, and there's even a cabinet full of board games and such. The bar was busy and we didn't spend much time there, but we ate dinner in the restaurant our first night here. I recommend making a reservation for dinner because they were pretty packed. The menu offers fresh locally sourced fare. The staff at the Inn was so very helpful and friendly, every single interaction left us feeling very happy from checking in to dining and everything else. When you stay at the Victorian Inn your stay includes breakfast in the restaurant and the food is amazing. The potatoes were perfect and the waffle is also something to write home about. The town of Ferndale is a wonderful place to go for the sole purpose of relaxation and the Victorian Inn is a wonderful place to stay while you do it! We did our wedding reception here in the barn. Everything was amazing! The owner was very accommodating and they were willing to help us design a custom menu since I have food allergies. The room itself is a great steal and it's really easy to dress it up super cute! You can also book rooms in the main part of the hotel for your guests which is great. We did our ceremony out at Centerville Beach and this place was super accommodating. We plan on having all our anniversaries here we just love it so much! read more

The "Victorian Inn" is as fine an example of the true essence of a B&B - Boutique Hotel experience to be found anywhere. Located in a Town that epitomizes a step back in time of over 100 years, this Inn clearly is the crown jewel of the area. Our goal was to be transported back into the time period of the Inn and to experience an essence of the luxury of a past era. This experience was accomplished with grace and style. We booked the room after viewing the choices on the Inn's website, which was an accurate representation of the room we found waiting, no surprises. The room even came equipped with an antique make up station for my wife's needs. The comfortable sofa and table gave us the chance to read and relax. The electric fireplace (inserted into the original fireplace) added a nice touch of ambiance and warmth. The room and bathroom were perfectly clean and spotless. The 14' high ceilings with period chandeliers were impressive. The woodworking trim and features of this grand edifice appear to be mostly original construction. Most of the stained and varnished wood work remains with it's original finish. The owners - innkeepers, Lowell and Jenny set the bar very high and were totally hands on in attending to our needs. Their balance of attention without being overbearing was perfect, and always ready to engage and to share with us their wealth of information about the building and the area. The staff, from the housekeepers on up, were found by us to be fully capable and willing to make our stay enjoyable. (How rare this is today) When you find a staff that is half asleep it is a reflection of the people at the top, this was truly the opposite here, everyone was on their game. Morning coffee and tea were ready in the community room by 7:30 AM and the breakfast hours of 8 -10:30 AM were more than flexible enough for us to not have to watch our time schedule. The included breakfast was served in their stand alone fine dining facility on the 1st. floor. We were free to choose a spot in the dining room to suit our needs at the time, either by the windows to experience the back in time street scene or by the fireplace for some warmth. The menu choices were varied and the staff customized it a bit to fit our needs, no problem at all. My wife is known by her friends as a "food snob" and is not easy to please. The breakfasts we enjoyed and the dinners at the "VI" Restaurant were excellent. Most Bay Area restaurants cannot do it as well. We were impressed at how fresh the ingredients were, not easy in this outpost location! The fine details of the food presentation were obviously done by a well trained chef with pride in their work. A couple of nights at the restaurant they had a live piano player and even a jazz musician. The owners and staff were very helpful in gathering information on things to do and helped to plan an outing to nearby Eureka. We almost felt like family the way we were treated. Finally, the old adage: "you get what you pay for"is true to form here. An establishment like this is enormously expensive to run, the rates were fair and I felt that I got more than I paid for. Located in the quaint town of Ferndale, it is a historic building with majestic Victorian rooms, a friendly and inviting staff, and great access to local attractions (mere miles from the beach, right on the main street with excellent shopping, Loreta Cheese Factory). We were there in the off season (November) and were the only guests...nonetheless they rolled out the red carpet including a full breakfast buffet with hot and cold options. It was great. The rooms are well-appointed and the atmosphere is truly lovely. I would recommend calling to see if you can get a deal in the off-season. The Victorian Inn is not for everyone. As a matter of fact, if you don't want to haul your suitcase up a long, long flight of stairs, you might want to consider staying somewhere else. We were in one of the larger rooms, but this is an old building, and we had trouble finding electrical outlets for our personal needs. The mattress on our bed wasn't too bad (although it was pretty hard), but the pillows were very uncomfortable. The pedestal sink in the bathroom was nice, but the tub shower combination was not. A hot breakfast was included, but it was not made on site. It was brought in. The hot breakfast dish that was served on the morning we were there was stuffed waffles, but they weren't very good. There was no fresh fruit. The only bread offered was a tray of strange looking bagels, and the only cereal was a poor quality granola. The town of Ferndale is very cute, but I wouldn't stay at the Victorian Inn again. The stairs alone would deter me. read more

Started off poorly: We were told we would receive an email to confirm our reservation but didn't until I called two nights later to ask for the email confirmation. After checking us in, the clerk didn't offer to carry our bags up the 27 steps to the rooms (no elevator). The room was fine, quiet and fair size with no TV (which was OK) but the shower head came to my chin (and I'm nowhere close to six feet) so washing my hair was challenging. Breakfast, contrary to the Whitney review was so poor we couldn't eat the scrambled eggs and lumpy cheese or greasy sausages. There was only one choice of cereal, no fruit and only white bagels, no other bread. So much for the "& B". The host was very affable but we quickly lost our appetite. Ferndale is a great place to visit but I won't stay at the Victorian Inn again. read more

I guess Vicki is confused. The stairs are not a big deal, it's only one flight..perhaps she needs to exercise more? I don't know..this place is lovely, absolutely beautiful with a cozy common room w/ fireplace and hot tea, coffee, boardgames etc. It's a mix of fancy yet warm. We ended up staying there unplanned and were very pleased. Our room was lovely and had 2 queen beds. Loved the bed linens. We had dinner downstairs and then went over to the bar and it was great. the food was very good. Very friendly welcome. Breakfast was really fab, it is included and they give 4 wonderful options and were very flexible about making a few substitions! The service was the worst part here. Our waiter was inattentive and looked overworked. Maybe not his problem, but it affected us in a negative way. Couldn't get refills and had to ask other passing waiters multiple times. The food quality was split in our party, some liked it. I did not. My New York strip had a lot of fat on it, had to cut around it quite a lot. And in the end, it wasn't that tasty anyway. Cost of the meal was definitely too high for what we all got. Overall, a disappointing experience to say the least as we were told this is one of the best restaurants in town. Probably should have gone across the street to the other recommendation. read more

The Victorian Inn is amazing! It's rare to stay somewhere and feel like you're in someone's home, but that's literally the case here. The owner Lowell Daniels has befriended us and made us very comfortable. The VI is elegant and classy yet it maintains a warm comfortable charm that makes it inviting. I give 5 Stars because the VI has all its bases covered; The architecture is old with incredible craftsmanship. The furnishings are antique. The food is exquisite. The service is prompt, friendly and eager to please. Our Suite, " Ira Russ Suite", is overlooking Main Street. The suite is right above the corner entrance and has a huge bay window, which allows for a multi directional view of the beautiful town. Upon entering our room we saw a nice birthday greeting for Lindsay and a box of delicious truffles from Ferndale's own Chocolate Shop, "Sweetness and Light!" The rooms are big, with very comfy beds, high ceilings and ours had a fireplace. There is a common room with coffee/tea, games, books and a large sitting area. Let me start by saying that this is my first ever negative review of anything ever. My experience with this inn has been the poorest customer service and the most absurd policies I've ever heard of. My fiancé booked us a room there as a surprise on our first night in Humboldt. Sadly, we had a family emergency and had to cancel. We gave twenty-four hours notice, but The Victorian Inn is the exception to general curtesy and policy. Nowhere on their website does it state that they have a seven day cancellation policy. They do send you a confirmation that includes this info in the fine print. However, these reservations where made within seven days and we essentially forfeited our money the moment we made said reservation without any recourse. Furthermore we think the best of people and not the absolute worst, as is sadly the case. When I called to clear this matter up I was told that we should be honored to even receive a gift certificate for later use as they most often don't even do that. "Consider it a compliment," was the information given to me by their front desk manager. I should also mention that the gc is void three months of the year and all holidays. When I asked to speak to the owner, Mr. Daniels, I was told that he was to busy to speak and that his "policy is his policy." When I asked the desk manger to tell Mr. Daniels that I insist on speaking with him I was told that he insisted on not speaking to me. We are quite kind and reasonable, but when I'm told that I must endure an unfair policy under the duress of a family crisis because they run a business in a "poor area"....well I am left to understand that Mr. Daniels has put himself first and his guests in a faraway second. Drove up to Ferndale for NYE and stayed at the Victorian Inn.From walking in the door you felt like seeing an old friend again and this is the place to relax.The staff and service exceeded our expectations and dinner at the VI in front of the fireplace made our evening perfect.To top it all a breakfast was included for both mornings.The other reviews are 100% on and we would recommend exiting the 101 at 691 for a memorable stay.The town itself is also worth seeing especially the Blacksmith shops,you will be amazed at the talent. read more

I drove a couple of hours to take my mother to dinner here. She is visiting for Christmas. After the long drive we arrived. We noticed there were only three tables occupied out of the entire restaurant. We we were excited it wasn't busy. We asked the host for a table and he asked us if we had a reservation. We didn't. We could come back an hour and a half later. There were three tables occupied!!! This Is a large restaurant. We asked the gentleman why they couldn't seat us and he told us they were busy. Wow, trapped in Fortuna for four days and our getaway came, so we went to Ferndale and found the Victorian Inn. The bar was serving lunch and the atmosphere was great. We sat at a turn of the century wood crafted bar and watched as several other groups came and went. Our server happened to be the bartender and she was delightful, attentive and welcoming. The flat screen was the modern touch to the room and the US Open was playing. An order of steamed clams arrived along with a seasoned bread that was delicious, especially when dipped in the clam broth. An order of Paella came out and the linguica and seafood combo was another delightful find. If you wonder why only four stars, it is due to the limited wine menu. The Chardonnay was OK, but could have been better. I do throw five stars for making us feel welcome and providing quality food at a very fair price. My recommendation is to bypass the rest of the downtown and go all the way down the main street until you find Victorian Inn. You will not be disappointed. read more

This is a really cute inn. We ended up in the smallest room but it was so cute. It Had tall ceilings and it's own electric fireplace. There is a common room with couches, games and refreshments so that you have room to spread out if traveling in a group. The breakfast was included and was a sit-down made to order. This is the view from the Emily Rose room, 206. The ventilation system is adjacent to the room and all you can hear is the constant running of the system. I assume any room along this side of the hotel will have the same issue. The sun seems to hit this side of the hotel in the afternoon so beware in the summer as there is no AC, ceiling fan only. The hotel is otherwise clean, quaint and historic. If you are someone who has trouble climbing stairs don't bother staying here unless they have rooms downstairs or a hidden elevator that I am not aware of. The restaurant in the hotel is not outstanding which I will review separately. What I enjoyed was being in the center of town and the ability to walk around downtown, the side streets and the cemetery which were all close. For a victorian hotel it is extremely well kept and without the funky smells and phony perfumes that some places use. If it were't for the loud fans outside my window I would have given the Victorian Inn a 5 star. read more

I ordered beef short ribs "Bourgignon" and for $31 got a greasy, gristly dish that I decided to take home to my dog. When I took a couple of bites and pushed it to one side, the waiter asked if he could clear the plate, but never inquired about why it was not eaten. The rest of the meal was okay. A very nice place to stay in a lovely little town where time has stood still. The hote and restruant staff are top notch, the rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. I am not really into the Victorian thing but its fun to check out new places and interesting to learn the history. The breakfast is included with your room and is a full breakfast made to order with coffee and juice. The food was terrific. The restraunt alone is worth a stop here. The Victorian Inn was the most unfriendly, creepy, and uncomfortable hotel experience of my life. My husband and I were on our honeymoon driving from sothern Cali to Oregon, and knew we had to stop midway. I found the Inn online and it looked so cute so I made the reservation for one night. First, we got a police escort into town. Nothing says welcome, like a cop following you 10 miles through cow pastures and main street. He even parked and watched us as we checked into our hotel. Honestly we were afraid to leave once we got into the hotel- so much for buying souvenirs at those cute little shops we passed. It was creepy. So we ate downstairs in the attached restraunt. We did not have a reservation but the host said he would "try" to get us in. When we were seated about 15 tables were empty. We ate as quickly as we could, looking at the artwork around us which was a painting of a man plucking a swan. I swear I am not making this up. We ran upstairs to our room only to find the 2 additional attached doors were locked from the other side and without any locks on our side, so we could be walked in on at any moment. We just should have left, but we were exhausted from the long drive. But my husband was so uncomfortable he didnt sleep all night. And my nightmares didnt help the lumpy bed.
