Ferndale is called the Victorian Village for a good reason. The while town is filled with winderfully maintained and restored buildings from an era gone by. Victorian Inn is no exception. This lovely inn is conveniently located in the heart of the downtown area, close to all the shoos and restaurants. You don't have to go far for a great restaurant though, the VI restaurant is located on the lower floor of the inn and serves some outstanding dishes...I had the baked brie short ribs and the butterscotch pudding while hubby had the salmon and creme brulee. We agree that all of the item were very well made and worth the price of admission. We had a lovely corner suite with huge ceilings and all the quaint touches you would expect. The bathroom had been renovated and had a large shower with both traditional shower head and an overhead rainshower head. You can hear the volunteer fire department siren whenever it goes off, but I expect that you can hear it in any of the accommodations in town, I mean its supposed to be loud. While it can be annoying it is one of those great quirks that make small town visits do endearing, and a great story for those at home. If you find yourself in Northern California take the time to stop by Ferndale. It is a treat,and treat yourself by staying at Victorian Inn. read more

We had a great quick stay here! The room was very clean and nice. Very cozy and we got a great nights sleep. We had chilled champagne waiting for us. The nice gentleman who checked us in made sure to tell us about the great pizza place that was still open. He couldn't have been nicer. The Victorian Inn Hotel is a lovely, family owned establishment that's a perfect place to stay if you're looking to get away from the hustle & bustle of daily life especially from that in the San Francisco Bay Area. Formerly an office building called the Russ Building, the owners Jenny & Lowell have owned and operated The Victorian Inn Hotel & their lovely jewelry business in Ferndale, CA since 1999. I myself picked up a couple of layering-type malachite necklaces & pretty pink coral pair of earrings from their sweet bijou jewelry business in the main lobby. They've some wonderful selections of both artisan items as well as fine jewelry selections. We stayed overnight from December 24th through the 25th but even this short jaunt proved relaxing enough. Dinner reservations at 7:30PM featured a wonderful Christmas Eve menu of prime rib and filet mignon with twice baked potatoes and fresh asparagus & kale with a starter of cups of clam chowder or squash soup. There was a selection of deserts that were nice finishers for the meal. Historic Ferndale, CA has all sorts of interesting little events within in it that, while part of our small town America past, may seem eccentric to those who are unfamiliar with how small towns work. For example, there was the volunteer fire department siren that went off around 8PM that we heard from our room. Later that evening at about 11:30 PM, the sound of church bells (real church bells, not recorded) could be heard from one of at least four churches calling worshippers to midnight mass on Christmas Eve. If you're looking for complete and utter silence on Christmas Eve in what is one of the few small towns in Northern California still operating as it has been for over 100 years, you'll be disappointed. If you're hoping to step back in time where everyone knows everyone, kids ride their bicycles in the streets well after dark because each of the residents is looking out for one another and hospitality, kindness and comfort are the theme, then you'll probably be delighted as we've been. We've stayed on and off at the Victorian Inn Hotel during the holiday season for the past 10 years and have always had a pleasant stay. Thanks Jenny & Lowell! We'll be back again soon. read more

I decided to stay here on the spur of the moment not knowing anything about Furndale. The whole town is a Historical Marker and a few movies among other things were made there. The one thing you can clearly tell in the movies when you watch them is the Victorian Inn. (Majestic and Outbreak) So staying there was even more fun after we left! The Victorian Inn is beautiful. Our room was big with tall ceilings. There is always drinks available in the common room which is beautiful in itself. You really feel like you are stepping back into a time when ladies wore long dresses and men fancy suits with hats. The amenities are basic but breakfast is really nice. I found the staff to be friendly as well as the other guests. I'll be going back for sure. read more

We stayed at the VI for three nights this month and had a wonderful time. The owners were gracious and welcoming, the room was adorable and very clean, and the restaurant was fabulous. After dinner, the server suggested that we sit by the fire for as long as we liked and enjoy a drink. The little town is lovely with lots of shops and very nice people. We recently stayed at the Victorian Inn while passing through Ferndale. It was typical of historic hotels I've stayed at on the Eastern Coast. We ate at the restaurant, and the food was better than I expected. For the most part we enjoyed our stay. If I was to try and find something critical of the actual hotel, the only thing would be the carpet needs attention. It has a slight smell like someone has used the carpet powder that gets vacuumed up at some point in the past, which never leaves a pleasant smell. Our problem actually happened in the bar area of the restaurant while waiting to be seated in the restaurant. Our group was a mixture of races/ethnic groups, White, Indian, and Chinese. A local woman that had been conversing with the lighter skinned women in our group actually had the gall to ask one of the women in our party if she had been raped by and forced into a relationship with her husband (dark skinned Indian) when he walked in with their 3 year old daughter, actually asking her to follow her to the bathroom to make this comment, with no other reason to think or ask that other than the fact he is darker skinned. Sadly, this woman is also a teacher in Ferndale, although I won't mention which grade she teaches. I'm a lifelong Georgia resident, with all of my family and ancestors having lived in the South (mostly country areas). It's kind of ironic that we as Southerners are always accused of racism, when in fact I have never heard anyone make a statement like that in the South. I sincerely hope the rest of the Ferndale locals are not this way, and will weed out any idiots in their mix, especially a teacher which can easily influence children, which just made the comments that much worse. The woman in our group was scared to tell me until we left Ferndale, since she knew I would of called out the local in the restaurant. read more

Exceptional service, charming restaurant and our stay at the Redwood Suites was sublime. Our suite had a separate bedroom with two queen beds. Excellent for my friend and I to keep our own daily wakeup schedules, and a kitchen to fix coffee first thing in the morning and snacks in the evening when we didn't feel like a full dinner. Having said that, the evening dinners in the VI Restaurant were wonderful and breakfast (included every morning with our room rental) was excellent, too. Toscha was our helpmate daily--checked us in our first day, waited on us at breakfast several mornings, besides pointing out some of the local sites we shouldn't miss during our visit. Thanks! The town of Ferndale is a wonderful getaway. It is certainly off the beaten track but that is what makes it a special place. We had wanted to take a road trip there for years. We were not disappointed and plan to return next year! Our timing could not have been more perfect--rhododendrons and azaleas were in total bloom everywhere, everything is so green. So picture perfect. Be sure to visit the Ferndale Museum and Fern Cottage to get a sense of life in this Victorian town. My thanks to our docents at both venues! I have waited many years to travel to this Historical place. Staying at the Victorian Inn was so special to me. Even though it was a climb to the top floor, it was worth the stay. I appreciated the upgrade into the Brisa Room. Spacious for my needs. The sheets were so soft and I found the bed to be very comfortable. I enjoyed both morning breakfasts and dinner the first night of my arrival. The server Tasha was exceptionally kind and efficient. The owner Lowell was so nice and engaging at every table to see how we were enjoying our stay. I enjoyed browsing all the shops and the museum, not to mention seeing the architecture of the Victorian Inn, homes and churches. It was a wonderful semi retirement visit and hope to return soon. Me and my best friend chose to stay in Ferndale's Victoria Inn on a Memorial Day weekend road-trip to the Avenue of the Giants. We chose it because it seemed like such a quaint and adorable place to stay, and their location was perfect for our purposes of visiting the Redwoods. However, our stay at the otherwise lovely Victoria Inn was marred by certain rude remarks that the restaurant hostess made to her coworker as we checked in for our in-guest breakfast. It would have been nice if she had waited until me and my companions were out of earshot to criticize us. The issue arose over a problem with our reservation that we were unaware of at the time.  Our reservation was originally booked for 2 people. However, one of my dearest friends decided to join us for our road trip at the last minute and we simply forgot to change the reservation.  Considering that we had booked a few months prior to the trip and by the time we arrived we had been traveling for 12+ hours, it is pretty understandable how it could have slipped our attention to change the original reservation.  In addition, the front desk clerk didn't mention anything being amiss when he checked us into the inn. Imagine our surprise the next morning, when we overheard the hostess express her disgust that we "crammed three people into their cheapest room" as we were being led to our table.  That remark was completely unnecessary and I believe it is in their best interest to learn how to at least be discreet when criticizing their guests. After we were seated their manager/owner came and explained about the reservation only being for 2, we happily changed it to 3 and paid the extra $25, no rude remarks necessary. Besides our uncomfortable breakfast, the room was lovely and the bed was very comfortable--even with the three of us sharing.  I can only imagine how scandalized the hostess would be if she saw how many people (co-ed, might I add) we've comfortably crammed into Vegas suites.  The horror!! For breakfast, we ordered the yoghurt with fruit and granola. The fruit was very fresh and delicious with the yoghurt and granola.    Ferndale is a quaint little town, just like we envisioned when we planned to stay there but we might think twice about staying at the Victoria Inn again the next time we decide to venture into the Redwood Forrest. read more

We were road-tripping to Oregon and found this B&B along our path. We had no expectations as we've never explored this part of CA. The Inn is truly a victorian, inside and out. The room size is nearly twice what we had expected. All the furnishings and appointments reflect the vintage of a victorian inn. It is situated in the middle of town, which is just a few square blocks. This is a great overnight pit stop and worth devoting a half day here to enjoy what a small township feels like. For us city-slickers, it was like being in a Hollywood movie set walking down Main Street, filled with boutiques, a vintage drug store that has a scale that uses weighs and a cash register that rings when the merchant pulls the handle. We typically don't dine at hotel restaurants. The Victorian Inn dining room is an exception. The included breakfast was made to order and literally carried us through dinner. And for evening supper, the service, menu selection, and food quality were consistent with a 4 or 5 star restaurant, at 3 or 4 star prices. There's no express check out, elevators, wifi, business center, or other modern conveninces of the Hyatt or Hilton. But if you want to turn the clock back in time for $150 B&B, this is a good ride to go "Back to the Future." read more

This place was awesome! In downtown Ferndale, which only has 2 good things going for it in my opinion: This being one of them. Great Staff, SUPER friendly and wonderful. Good, huge, old Goldmining style rooms, with elaborate wood features, and still, the comfort of a Flat Screen TV ( ah..) If you are hiking in the redwoods, or just going through this area of California, then take a stop here, This is a one night town, as it really is just two blocks, although the break from any hustle and bustle during travel is worth it. read more

Our room was adorable, nicely redone, charming. Dinner in the dining room was very good (try the beet salad!). Happy with the inn!!! The noise from the logging trucks started at 4 a.m. and was continuous. Because the inn is near a four-way stop, the noise is surprisingly loud. We stayed on a Tuesday night, so perhaps weekends are better (call and ask?). Our room was near the intersection, so perhaps a room at the back of the hotel would not be so loud. read more

A wonderful place to stay in this cute and historic town. The buildings victorian architecture is wonderfully preserved inside and out. The rooms are clean and well kept. However, what really makes this place a 5 star location is the friendly staff. In fact everyone we encountered in this lovely town was very friendly. Oh yeah, and don't be fooled by the 3 star rating for the restaurant. We ate the complimentary breakfast provided with our room and it was delicious! My wife and I had an omellate, my son had a fresh fruit yogurt and my daughter had a Belgium waffle. We all left 100% satisfied. We had dinner out the night before and came back wishing we had eatin at the VI. read more

4 stars is really stretching it, but I am bumping it up because of Ferndale itself and the character of the hotel. staff: very friendly atmosphere of hotel: quaint, but up-to-date food/breakfast: very excellent, especially since included in B&B price, several choices wifi: free, but spotty and weak quality of rooms: very cool hotel interior and nice touches throughout with the glaring exception of the bathrooms! our clawfoot tub and shower had hideous oxidization marks around the drain and the brass (I think) piping had also oxidized resulting in a dank smell in the shower, plus water pressure and hot water were virtually non-existent; this is a no go for the prices summary: needs some updating, some aspects like outside paint job, restaurant, etc were excellent, but others like bed linens, some curtains and bathroom need work; I would like to go back when it is a little more updated Ferndale: very sweet without feeling forced, many artisans' shops, very little else, surprisingly good food! a great destination for true relaxation near the redwoods read more

Love this place. Prior to staying here I had been sleeping in a Chinese food restaurant and this place was a dream. Clean, quiet, full breakfast in the morning. Adorably decorated and in the perfect spot to explore humbolt county. I actually drove all the way up to crescent city from here and it was less than two hours. I only paid $110 for my perfect little baby room which is unbelievable because I paid that much for the shittiest of shitty budget motels. Will for sure be coming back with hordes of friends. read more

What a great piece of history. All the guest rooms are upstairs and well appointed. There is a community room with complimentary tea, hot chocolate, and coffee, as well as a refrigerator for guest use to store items/leftovers, and an ice machine. There are a few games, however SORRY has the game board missing... too bad because we wanted to play! The breakfast was included with the stay and was a sit-down version. They have granola and egg-dishes, as well as coffee or juice. It was a good breakfast, filling enough to get the day started. The owners were terrific and very friendly, even knowing where we were from and coming to our table to chat. There isn't a ton to do in town but enough to be intrigued by the history of Ferndale. It looks just like Main St. USA in Disneyland. The Victorian Inn is a great step back into time at one of, if not the oldest, victorian-style inn in all of California. read more

Near-perfect. Ferndale itself is a great little town. We got in a bit late, after everything was closed (like a lot of small towns, don't arrive after 5:00 P.M., or expect most of the businesses to be shuttered.) The stay started off on the wrong foot. We walked into the "reception area," which is really like a jewelry store, which is a bit strange. The girl who worked there was friendly as can be, but she tried our credit card several times, and it didn't work. It worked literally everywhere else, both in town and beyond, on our eight-day trip. She said, "This happens to us all the time," which is really a red flag. They need to update their system or figure that out. We had to go to another credit card to get our room, which was annoying. Past that, though, the stay was near-perfect. There's a pizza place in town - Ferndale Pizza - that's open a bit later than some of the other places. And you absolutely HAVE to stop into the Palace Saloon, the farthest-west tavern in the continental United States (a few inebriated locals were yelling at the Giants-Athletics game on the television, and the cocktails weren't great, but the staff know their beers pretty well, so stick to those if you can.) Other than that, the town is a ghost town in the early evening and into the night. Quiet and safe. You'll park on the street, but you won't have any issues doing it - or strolling around town. The rooms in the hotel were gorgeous. At first, we were shocked because they use "old-fashioned" keys, but so what? The ceilings were high, the outside world might as well not exist with the thick walls, the rooms were IMMACULATELY cleaned, and everything worked to perfection during our stay. There's a community room with coffee, a refrigerator, a fireplace, and board games. It was nice to sit and work on a puzzle, or just to read by the fire. They also have Sleep + Sound machines, which create great white noise to fall asleep to. This place really excels at breakfast, which is downstairs in the VI Restaurant & Bar. A great selection of food, well-prepared, and the owner (I think he was the owner, anyway) came around and took the time to chat to everyone in the place. Don't skip out of town without strolling through the adorable little shops on Main Street - including the cutest public bathrooms I've ever seen. You'll spend more than is prudent at the Mercantile, if you're anything like me, loading up on local goods. read more

Finding check-in was confusing. Signs with arrows on all the doors with no real destination signage. Saying it was located in the the jewelry store would have solved a lot of confusion. Brandy the bartender was the best! Personalty, information, and her recommendations on appetizers was spot on. The bed was TERRIBLE.(ROOM 209). Hard as a rock and we both woke up with backaches the next morning. The breakfast included in the price of the room was pretty bland. I ordered bacon and eggs at 8:30 and they were out of bacon......really? with a meat market across the street? The wait staff was okay but didn't really seem happy to be there. It was a great location in regards to The Steeple venue, which was the reason for our visit. The communal room was great and we enjoyed the historical photos. read more

This is just for the tavern. Our first night in Ferndale we wanted a drink and light supper and opted for the tavern and not the dining room - great choice! We started with wine or a superb Cider Mule that was the special that day. For supper, we ordered from the salad/soup and appetizer menu and they were more than happy to accommodate. They had live music - guitar and singer - in the dining room which was perfect for background and yet we could easily talk. I had the clam chowder, my friend had pulled pork sliders and we can recommend both. read more

The place was classy and clean. Only one tv in the corner with no sound, to maintain the historic ambience. We were only passing through this victorian town. The whole town is on the historic registry. We would surely stay at the Inn or dine if we pass by again with a few days. read more

What a charming Inn! The rooms were very nicely appointed, comfortable bed and large open spaces to relax and enjoy this unique and lovely town. The bar and restaurant were superb with imaginary dishes that will please any pallet. The Inn and restaurant were highly recommended from those I met. Vegan and vegetarian options! I called ahead and was rewarded with a fantastic vegan meal: vegetable medley with yams, carrots, roasted garlic, cherry tomatoes and fingerling potatoes. A winter squash mash with a beet purée gravy and kalettes. Service here is outstanding, as is their "regular" food. The owner is creating a vegan/vegetarian menu, so let him know if that's your preference. Surf and Turf is also remarkable. read more

It was very quiet, despite the hotel being full and it being New Years Eve. Very pleasant stay. It was a bit expensive and the breakfast in the morning left something to be desired, but we will return. read more

The coolest Restaurant ever is inside this Hotel. It is beautiful! Grand tall ceilings, old Victorian feel. We loved it here, the owner is very involved and they are very attentive to detail.
