This coffee shop is located right across from the farmer's market, which I love to stop by and get a cup of coffee before walking through the market. The location is spacious and sells coffee beans for anyone interested to purchase; variation of beans. The staff members are very friendly and they provide different options of non-dairy substitutes. I usually order Americano from Ballard Coffee Works that it does not taste burnt or overwhelming strong, however, nothing extraordinary about the taste. read more

I have never had coffee this smooth. It was honestly such a surprise to me. I generally don't like coffee that much, but this was fantastic. The barista recommended an iced vanilla mocha, so naturally, that's exactly what I got. I got an 8 ounce, but they only had 12 ounce cups. I couldn't taste any artificial flavor or any of the vanilla sweetener; it tasted natural, sweet-but-not-excessively-sweet, and a coffee that I thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed. The coffee taste really shined through, so if you enjoy mochas, I recommend any of them here. The ambiance inside is lovely; it's spacious and vibrant, a good working area (+1 for speedy WiFi), with tons of natural light coming in. There is a corner with books and kids toys, and it's the type of place you can spend hours at. Come here for a casual date, before class, or bring your kids. Such a convenient location with plenty of bus stops, such sweet and friendly baristas, couldn't have had a better experience here. They also have a sign saying tipping isn't necessary because of the fair wages and how their prices reflect that; from farmers for the coffee beans till the coffee gets served in your hand, everything is fair and livable and should definitely be recognized for amazing service and even better values. I stopped in her last night for a meet-up. The location is convenient, however parking stinks! Similar to other Ballard spots you're really fortunate to find street parking (which I didn't) or you pay through the nose to park in a lot. $6.00 + tax for two damn hours! They have a limited herbal tea selection - what they do have was pretty tasty. The space is fairly large with round tables, chairs with people parked in them with their laptops and earplugs. Typical of Seattle...there's also a glass private room for groups to meet (which is reserved in advanced). read more

My go-to for coffee in Ballard. I stop in here on a weekly basis for an americano or cappuccino. The baristas pull a mean shot and my milk is always steamed to perfection. My biggest pet peeve is milk that's too hot in a cappuccino and they never get it wrong at Ballard Coffee Works. I also admire a business that pays its employees a higher wage in lieu of tips. The staff seem to back this policy and I appreciate that as well. A good business knows how to care for its employees as well as the customers. It's a tough act to balance so kudos to them. read more

Had a lot of expectations from this place as I read about their coffees in a lot of Seattle blogs. I tried a 12 Oz latte and it was disappointing. The drink was very milky and hardly had any flavor of the Seattle Blend. I wanted to buy the beans too depending if I like the coffee but opted against it. There are several great places in this area and count Ballard Coffee Works among them. It always seems busy, but the line moves fast. I had Chai tea and a prosciutto and Gruyere croissant. They serve their drinks in really nice mugs and draw really intricate Latte art (that almost makes you not want to drink it. My Chai tea was wonderful. It was rich with just the right sweetness. I also really enjoyed the croissant--really tasty. The standard for coffee houses in Seattle is high, but Ballard Coffee Works stands out. read more

Was really rooting for this place-and still am. It looks like a coffee geek's dream, with all kinds of coffee varieties and blends, and an array of brew methods to get at your favorite flavors, and a woody post-industrial atmosphere conducive to sipping and surfing on your laptop. I was excited to see what they could do! But immediately, there was cause for concern. The person at the register looked at me like my nose had sprouted wings when I ordered a doppio espresso. We worked out that that meant a double shot of espresso served neat, and moved on, but a little voice in my head was saying, "Uh-oh..." My espresso was supposedly an Ethiopian varietal. I was a little worried, because of the light roast. This tends to leave many sugars in the beans underdeveloped, causing the grounds to be less adhesive in the portafilter, which in turn will cause fast pours and bitter under-extraction. I found this out the hard way as a barista and cafe manager years ago, trying to get a good espresso pour from medium-roasted Sumatran beans. Sure enough. The espresso was thin and poured in about 10 seconds (should be closer to 20), with a light-colored bitter crema. Thank goodness they served it with soda water, so I could rinse my mouth. Really bitter, winey and unpleasant. This is why I always order straight shots when trying a new place. If they can't nail this, the rest of their offerings are also suspect. With a prime location on a prominent intersection with great foot traffic, success here should be a no-brainer. But like the Tully's that occupied this space before them, it's all about the product and the people at the end of the day, especially in this coffee-crazy neighborhood. You can't phone it in, with great options like Umbria in the hood- and a huge Starbucks just across the street. I'll give them another shot (pun intended) another time. But right now, I don't see much reason to fight this battle. If you try them, opt for a pour-over or vacuum pot slow extraction instead; a much better option for lighter roasts. Not currently recommended for espresso. read more

My latte was good - the right temperature and a good foam to frothed milk ratio. The coffee was just as I like it - not too bitter but with an edge. The space is big - and it has some big windows so depending on where you sit it has natural light - probably hot when the sun us shining in, but this is Seattle:) The place is pretty generic - it lacks funk and quirk - it's nothing special. The food wasn't particularly appealing but I can't comment on taste. I'm a scone lover but there was only one (blueberry). Ever since the Seattle coffee works company was acquired by Victorola it's changed for the worse all around. Beans are not rich and flavorful, usually have a burnt flavor whereas they used to be wonderful. Baristas aren't as friendly and seem stressed. They brought back tipping after it having been eliminated before, I presume their wages feo baristas changed along with this. Basically everything changed for the worst and it's really unfortunate. read more

There's plenty of seating if you want to get some work done on a laptop. The noise level was fairly low, even when they were busy. Overall a great experience, but still not sure how I feel about the cost of the coffee. 16oz Vanilla latte and a pastry was over $12!! It was good... But dang ‍! Seems to have potential but can't say I loved this spot. On the good side the location is optimal right on Market in Ballard. Also interesting that they specify 'no tips required' and say they pay their coffee growers more and pay a living wage while investing in their employees. To the downside, the baristas seemed a bit 'stiff' to me, kind of formally polite but not warm at all. They also got my order wrong the first time (1/2 decaf iced americano with half & half) and had to remake. No inside seating even though Seattle is 70% vaccinated, although apparently they are opening that up tomorrow. No wifi for customers was a bit odd as well. read more

Who charges for whip in a mocha? Fine charge but be fair. I've worked at 3 coffee shops and owned two coffee carts in the past. So I have a little understanding of the business. Today was their official opening with free coffee including latte art (now that's dedication right there). Despite giving out free drinks all day, I found my latte to be the perfect temp and strong. If a coffee shop sits next to a big Starbucks and still get a big crowd, then you know it must be good. Ballard Coffee Works is such store. What BCW drew our attention at the first place was its smell. The authentic strong and pure aroma of coffee beans, not compromised by the sugar or cream. The scent distinct the store from any Starbucks store, because honestly, most Starbucks smells more like bakery than coffee shop now, too sweet and milky. The interior design is quit artistic. Bright, modern yet cozy. They have a coffee brew bar there and the stuff introduced several options to me enthusiastically. I can see that they're really serious about the coffee. At the end I ordered same cappuccino like my wife did. There were lots of people in the store and all the seats were taken, so I went out sitting at the outdoor bar booth, which is quite unique, comfortable and perfect for enjoying the sunshine at a summer day. I was quite surprised to see the latte art work in our coffee, because ours was to-go order in paper cups. Not many coffee shops bother to do latte art for paper cups now a days. A big plus. The scent was excellent and the taste was even better. The taste was strong in coffee's natural flavor, but also very smooth and well balanced. The after taste for each sip was very clean, no unpleasant bitterness or sour. That's some perfect coffee beans and brewing. Love the store, and I will definitely visit them again if in the neighborhood. read more

Been here 3 times, time for a formal review. Atmosphere is nice. Lots of wood, and a great variety of coffees available for both retail and a la carte purchase. ***Coffee snob review*** Espresso drinks here are wildly inconsistent. First visit we had our drinks in-house (lattes) and they were quite good. The last two visits I've gotten plain and flavored lattes to go, and they have been average at best. Today's latte is a step-up from Starbucks, but far from the espresso elite of the area. I'm very well versed in Tacoma's coffee scene, but I'm still learning Seattle's. With that said, this espresso fails in comparison to my staples in Tacoma. My significantly better half's "vanilla caramel" latte tastes neither of vanilla nor caramel--much less latte. It tastes like weak hot milk. Very disappointing. Overall this place is worth checking out, for retail offerings alone. Cold brew on nitro is always exciting. Venture elsewhere for enlightening espresso though. read more

As a chai latte fanatic, I've tried versions from the 'Big Boys' in town and some more independent cafes - and BCW, by far, has the best hot chai latter I've ever had! First of all, I thoroughly enjoyed & appreciated the friendly service from start to finish. The counterperson (sorry I didn't catch your name!) said he had 3 questions for me: sweet or spicy (first time I've had a choice!), what size... and, I can't remember the third question. I had a mix of sweet and spicy - and boy, that was a great choice! I was enamored with the latte art on top of my beverage - again, a first for me. Little touches like this make me want to go back - it's all in the details. Anyways, the drink was ridiculously good. Hot, but not too hot. Spicy and flavorful - with REAL spices and REAL chai - not some cheap, corn syrup-laden flavoring. I wanted to drink it in a hurry because it was so good but I decided to sit and sip white enjoying the free wifi. The perfect hot bevvy to enjoy on a chilly January afternoon.
