First time there. We were looking for a place that would allow us to bring in our own drinks, and they accommodated us. We had their Chubby Wings as an appetizer. So crispy and flavorful. Then my friends chose the vermicelli with pork and spring rolls. I had one of the spring rolls (yum) and a bite of her dish. And, yes. Yummy. I had their beef combo pho. So good. The broth was light and full all at once. I ate it up and was incredibly satisfied. The place was bright and clean. They didn't have many customers at 5pm on a Saturday. All the homemade Vietnamese dishes I ate growing up are available on the menu, which not many restaurants offer. My coworker convinced me to go to Kalihi to try the best French dip. Indeed, it was the best French dip on Oahu. Filled with tender brisket meat, piled high with the usual banh mi garnishments, topped with a creamy avocado crema, and a side of rich pho broth. Is it authentically Vietnamese? No, but it's made Kevin's way (the delicious way). This is how fusion food should be done! Honestly, I cannot even remember anything else we ordered because that sandwich made me forget all my problems (at least for a week). I will have to come back to try the other dishes. This has been a spot that I've been wanting to go to for a while now. There are several other restaurants located in the very same parking lot, but we were determined to dine here. We arrived around 6 pm and several tables were occupied. Upon pondering several pages of the menu for a while, I decided on the following: Winter Melon Tea: 9/10. This is honestly better than most Boba places. It isn't too diluted and they do not give a lot of ice. Great flavor that is nice and strong! Shaken Beef: 9/10. I have never had a dish that went by this name, so I had to try it. Our server gave a small chuckle and mentioned it was one of their most popular dishes. It came out on a hot, sizzling platter. I am not sure what the sauce was- but it had a nice flavor, and I loved the vegetables and fries with it. I will definitely order this dish when I go to eat there again. Viet Chubby Boy has one of the BEST tasting pho broths on the island. It may be a small hole in the wall type restaurant, but their food has been nothing but satisfying. We often come here for lunch with coworkers since it's close to work and one of our favorite options. The place is small but we never had trouble finding a table. They have photos of their dishes that decorate the walls and the facility itself is organized and tidy. The workers here are always friendly and welcoming. Not an ideal location, next to the post office in kalihi. Parking is a hit or miss, we had to drive around twice for spots to open up at 9pm. Small establishment with about 5 tables, good service. I ordered a Vietnamese ham sandwich since I love banh mi's. I was a little disappointed in the sandwich itself. All the pickled carrot and daikon in the inner corner of the bread and all the ham by the opening. So every bite was either meat or pickled veggies but never both. Also, the meat fell out with almost every bite since it was at the edge. I don't believe they use pate, since I didn't notice any and I love pate. My daughter and I were craving for pho, and this place came with good recommendations from my in laws so we decided to come here with them. Once we entered, we were greeted by a friendly lady. Menus for each of us were laid out on the table. It was really nice because the menu has pictures, prices, and descriptions. I like how there were a variety of options especially for someone who maybe didn't want pho in particular. Once we ordered, the food came out within 5-10 mins. It came out quickly. Luckily, the late summer weather in Hawai'i isn't as hot or as humid as we experienced earlier this year in April while visiting Vietnam's Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City. However, the 92-degrees F heat and high humidity did remind us of the visits and we began to crave healthy and refreshing Vietnamese food. I trusted reviews from fellow Yelp Friends and chose Viet Chubby Boy in Kalihi when I queried Vietnamese food near to me after shopping at Costco Iwilei. I was familiar with the location of this restaurant as I've eaten at Guieb Cafe and Au's Garden Chinese Restaurant with fellow Yelp Friends and family. We snagged a parking stall almost directly in front of the restaurant and walked in. Upon entry, we waited until a young man came to seat us. There weren't too many customers when we arrived. However, it took us several minutes to peruse the extensive menu and make our food decisions, and the restaurant was filled. The restaurant was clean and bright. The elder waiter described some of the dishes that interested us and quickly brought us eating utensils and glasses of chilled water. FOOD: -Summer Rolls with Shrimp: The Summer Rolls or gỏi cuốn, which translates as "salad rolls" were freshly made to order. The rice paper wrappers (bánh tráng) were soft, supple and slightly chewy while holding the fresh and crisp lettuce, rice vermicelli, and shrimp slices. We've had Summer Rolls at other restaurants and have found the rice paper wrapper to be rubbery and chewy. However, the peanut sauce that accompanied this appetizer was very tasty and a little bit went a long way. .$10 -Chubby Spicy Wings: My fried foods loving husband's eyes lit up upon seeing this appetizer. We asked about the spice level of this dish and the server told us it wasn't really hot. The meaty chicken wings had a light crust and were tender. The wings had been tossed in their house made sweet-spicy sauce and topped with caramelized onions. $14.95 -Oxtail Pho: Viet Chubby Boy's oxtail pho was a huge portion and we shared down to the last drop. The clear and light broth was unlike the typical dark brown and beefy broth. This oxtail pho was delicious and not heavy-tasting, while the vegetables (cabbage, carrots, and cilantro) and white and green onion added a more vegetal depth. We were glad that the oxtails were tender and beefy-tasting, but given the price of this noodle soup, we wished the pieces could have been a little bit bigger. $25.50 We'd return when we have a hankering for Vietnamese food the next time when we are in the Kalihi neighborhood. read more

I found that whole section of restaurants in the same parking lot as diners on north king street, kalihi are great grinds. Since I was in the area, decided to try VIet Chubby Boy, and you yelpers are spot on. Love to use my trusty yelp to find good grinds, and this place will not disappoint. Combo Pho - 5 stars - for $15.50, you have an average sized large bowl of pho and usual veggies. What makes a really good pho is the broth, and at first, I tasted it, there was a spice that made it taste a little weird, but after reading another yelper's comment about adding their chili sauce (I mixed it with their hoisin sauce), it was the bomb! The soup was one of the best I've tasted, and it satisifed me fully, in the amount and taste. Hubby had the lemon grass chicken. It was delicious as well, but there wasn't much chicken, and was only a very few shreds of it and more noodles, but was still satisfying in taste and enough to fill him. I would have given this place a 5 stars overall, but it's a small mom and pop restaurant with an old aircon and no ventilation. The server/cashier was super nice and attentive, but when he served my bowl, his thumb was in the bowl, almost touching my broth. I heard someone in the back as well as another patron coughing constantly, so I was a bit concerned since the new covid variant is rampant again. Seen this place on Cheap Eat on television. So I had to check them out for myself , Guy Hagi makes everything on T.V look good . Was not disappointed I ordered their Pho French Dip. Usually French dip comes with a brown savory dipping sauce like Au jus . This Banh Mi sandwich had thin slices of brisket and comes with their pho soup as a dipping sauce . Not sure what it was and I don't think it was supposed to be a part of the pho since it tasted weird and made me nauseous. The grilled pork banh mi is delicious!
