Ordered the salted coffee (one of my favorite types of Vietnamese coffee) and it was too bitter. I know it sounds weird, but Vietnamese coffee is not supposed to be bitter. It is supposed to be smooth and sweet and creamy. The service was nice, a bit on the slower side but they were fairly busy. Inside is crowded. Hard to find seating.

Yay, a coffee shop that closes after 3 pm haha. I found this place after picking up some bagels nearby. The staff were all passionate about the drinks and were telling the customers the background of the ingredients and where they come from. The ube comes from the Philippines and is processed from Indonesia. You can definitely taste the ube flavor and it's not too sweet. There's also a few food options here with empanadas and bahn mi.

Love this hidden coffee spot in West Loop. The owners are very friendly and the service is always stellar. Prices are comparable to other spots in the neighborhood. I love the Jasmine oat matcha!

Coffee/drinks were good, food was not. Cute concept but they kinda missed on the execution. How are you gonna serve a banh mi with frozen (literally) veggies. One of the servers laughed at my friend's name so the vibes were just off at this place.

Vietfive is a very chill place to work and enjoy a nice cup of their Vietnamese coffee or whatever other tea drinks you'd like to enjoy! I particularly enjoyed the Matcha Mango Refresher, and am excited to try more of their tea options! Their banh mi (I got the pork one, but they also offer chicken and veggie) was delicious and fresh. The baguette was crisp with a soft pillowy center that cushioned the crunchy veggies and tender meat perfectly. The presentation is also nice on a wood board, adding a rustic feel to an already vibey spot. I stopped in Vietfive for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning to knit and relax. At around 9:30am, it wasn't too busy at all. Around 11am, there was a rush and no more tables available for people to sit. With a couch and a few coffee tables, there is a decent amount of seating, but it goes quickly. Overall, Vietfive was a great place to stop for a morning work. I was able to get a lot of knitting done and finished an audiobook, but I also saw a couple of people working on laptops! It was chill, bright, and the staff was very helpful! Highly recommend!

Was super excited to try this place considering it's one of the few viet cafes. Both my partner and I were very disappointed. I wanted to like this place but I couldn't. Although their ca phê trung was good, everything else was not. We ordered an iced VietFive latte without flavoring and it just tasted like watered down coffee, didn't even taste strong enough to consider it coffee. The combo bánh mì was good but I was not a fan of the xa xiu chicken bánh mì . Too much pepper and something in it was wayyy too salty. We waited almost 40 minutes for our banh mi because the workers didn't hear that the order came in. They were too busy changing the songs playing to pay attention. They gave us mochi donuts as an apology.

got the ca phe trung (egg coffee) and thought it was okay. i think that the coffee wasn't as strong as the vietnamese coffee i'm used too are. the coffee was good, sweet from the condensed milk and still had a nice flavor. the egg cream on top was kinda ehh as well. the flavor wasn't really strong or egg-y. i typically like my egg creamtop to be stronger and pack a punch. overall, the store is super cute and love all the decor. lots of references to vietnam which i love and would be a nice place to study at!! i do think that their coffees are not as strong or intense as a typical vietnamese coffees are (still stronger than most lattes lol), but was still okay yummy rating: 7/10

I came here for the first time today and was blown away. I ordered a matcha with coconut cream cold foam, and it might just be my new favorite. The matcha wasn't sweetened (which I love) and the coconut cream added just the right touch of sweetness. It was perfectly balanced, super smooth, and honestly... so yummy in my tummy. I'm already plotting my return. I also tried the jerk chicken empanada, which was surprisingly flavorful and filling. I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly shocked by how good it was. I'm seriously considering grabbing another one tomorrow. The vibe of the place is eclectic in the best way: cool, artsy, and cozy. It's the kind of spot you could sit in for hours whether to chill, work, or people-watch. Bonus: the girl at the front was so friendly and helpful, especially since it was my first time. Highly recommend.

Ordered Vietfive Coffee for my work team through Uber Eats to our office in the Loop, and everyone really enjoyed their drinks and pastries! We tried a variety including Ube Horchata Lattes, matcha lattes, and teas--all were fun and flavorful. I got the Ube Horchata Latte, which I enjoyed, though I could have ordered the smaller size since it was extremely sweet and very much a dessert drink. We also got the mango peach puffs, which were delicious. It's a great spot for unique, indulgent coffee drinks that feel like a treat. Would definitely order again!

Great, unique coffee shop! More than just coffee, also has boba drinks, ube lattes, horchata, matcha, etc. Loved my empanada, fully filled and perfectly crispy. Loved the bright colors of the space and how light the space is! Staff were all very friendly and kind.

I absolutely loved this place! I popped in to do some work and grab a bite while waiting on a friend. It's cozy but still enough room for several different groups of people to sit. When I got there there was a line but while the staff member was helping a customer, the digital kiosk was still open to order. I like that nobody was rushed through getting help from staff, but it didn't feel inconvenient bc you could easily make a quick order at the same time. I got a coffee and a rice bowl. I love the vegetarian choices available. My drink came out quickly and my food took a little bit longer but the staff member, Minesha I think, let me know they were making fresh rice. She was incredibly warm and helpful. Hey energy just made everything so much more pleasant plus she knew so much about the food and drink and helped folks make decisions without being pushy. I feel like everything was good quality and a good value. I'll be back whenever I'm in the neighborhood!

Finally got around to visiting this fun coffee shop on Madison Street! I'm always looking to switch up where I get coffee from and was delighted by the beverage and service at Vietfive. I ordered a delicious hot coffee with condensed milk and relaxed in the cute shop while I enjoyed. My friend was also a big fan of the vegan iced coffee he got with coconut milk. I have yet to try the food, but it seemed plenty popular while I was there. Would be a great spot to meet a friend or post up and do some work. read more

I'll start by saying that the Banh Mi Chicken Empanada was so tasty. So that would get 5 stars from me. However, being a diabetic, aside from a black coffee the coffee drink selections sadly are FULL of sugar. I hesitantly ordered the black coffee with oat milk. It tasted like burnt coffee and after two sips I had to throw it out. Would be nice if they had a decent no sugar or very low sugar option. read more

Stopped in this morning to try it out.... Delicious!!! Deon behind the counter is so pleasant - explained to us the difference in the coffees and made recommendations for us. Also allowed us to sample some of the other mixes! We also met the owner who introduced himself - very friendly!! I got the #1 which is the medium roast coffee with condensed milk, hot. I did have a sample of this cold - it will likely be my summer go to drink! I'd probably ask for a little less condensed milk in the hot version (but that's my personal preference) Highly recommend trying this place out - we will be adding it to our morning coffee rotation for sure #supportlocal read more

Popped by on a weekday morning to switch up my coffee. The owner was there and was so friendly and nice telling us about the upcoming events!! We got the coconut iced coffee and it is STRONG - I think I would be highly overcaffinated if I were to finish it haha. But it's still good! We also got the tofu puff pastry which was great. I've found my spot for Vietnamese iced coffee in Chicago!! Coming from Orange County, I'm used to my Vietnamese iced coffees being STRONG. Vietfive does not disappoint. The coffee taste is strong and balanced perfectly with the condensed milk. I also tried their BBQ pork banh mi empanada. I thought the idea was intriguing, but I felt like the food was a little meh. The empanada was a touch dry, and I personally find one of the best parts of banh mi to be the fresh herbs and cold pickled veggies. Since you have to bake the entire empanada, the cold veggies became warm and lost some of their refreshing texture. Lastly, Vietfive's cups are also cute and the cafe space is very open and modern. I am definitely coming back here for my vietnamese iced coffee fix! read more

The experience was underwhelming so I do NOT recommend this place for anyone who's looking for a good "bánh mì" or Việt food in general while West Loop. Came here on a Sunday morning & ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich. We waited for about 30 minutes then were told it'd take another 10 mins for them to make one sandwich although there was not that many people in line & waiting inside. Unfortunately we had to cancel our order. They're understaffed leading to poor customer service. The menu was overpriced & as a Viet coming from Las Vegas, I think they lack the authenticity in the food options. read more

It's an attempt of Vietnamese coffee. I usually make it myself at home, but given that I moved here from California I wanted to try some local spots. The coffee is just black coffee with milk. It's very watery, it should be using sweetness condensed milk. read more

Just left a great place to drink coffee and have a great empanada. When you just arrive the outside of the building has a different look with a feel. Inside you are greeted by smiling faces. A great coffee smell like no other roaming through the air. The place has a pleasant fang-shui and the colors make it just much better. Loved the experience, felt like home. The staff were really kind and understanding of our order and chatted with us. Also there were some people in virtual meetings so not too loud environment. When I arrived they were closing but they opened up for us. The owner greeted us and told us to come in. I ordered the iced coffee with condensed milk and one with coconut cream. Wow...! They both hit the spot. The inside decor was very nice. I will definitely return to try their 'hot drinks! read more

History

Established in 2022.

VietFive, LLC is a specialty Vietnamese Coffee company that grows, harvests, imports, roasts, and serves Robusta beans from my family farm in Buon Ma Thuot, Vietnam. In addition to serving coffee, VietFive provides career opportunities and access to marginalized communities and homecomers (ex-felons). We believe everyone has a RightFul Presence at VietFive. The name VietFive is meaningful to me. It's in honor of our family's refugee story and to promote the love of Vietnamese coffee. "VietFive" is the direct translation of "VietNAM." "Nam" means "Five" in Vietnamese. My family left Vietnam on a small fishing boat that was 45x15 and spent 5 days at sea. We then spent 5 months at a refugee camp in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The number 5 in numerology, means "Making choices that lead to change that leads to freedom." In the biblical context, the number five represents "Grace." Essentially, we started VietFive to share our story, build community, and provide quality Vietnamese Robusta coffee.

Meet the Business Owner: Tuan H.

I am a refugee from Vietnam. I came to the US at the age of 3, grew up in government housing, and got involved in gangs and dealing drugs as a teen. After serving 15 years in prison, I turned my life around. I earned a bachelor's degree in conceptual design and worked at Leo Burnett in Chicago. Then, I started VietFive using Robusta beans from my family's farm in Vietnam. We're dedicated to sharing our love of Vietnamese coffee and giving back to the community. We support under-served communities in Chicago by providing resources and opportunities, and we partner with local schools to help families and students. Our goal is to use Vietfive coffee to connect, serve, and empower our community.

I recently stopped by Vietfive Coffee and decided to try their Vietnamese coffee. While it wasn't bad, it didn't wow me either. The coffee was decent, but I've had better versions of Vietnamese coffee elsewhere. The balance of sweetened condensed milk and the coffee itself was fine, but it lacked that bold, rich flavor that really makes it stand out. The atmosphere of the shop was nice, and the staff was friendly, but when it comes to the coffee, I was expecting something a bit more memorable. I'd still be open to trying other drinks on the menu, but the Vietnamese coffee didn't quite hit the mark for me. Would recommend if you're in the area and looking for a cozy spot, but if you're after top-tier Vietnamese coffee, you might want to keep looking. read more

Rolled into Vietfive Coffee in the West Loop this morning and treated myself to an iced coffee and a BBQ pork Bánh Mì empanada, about $12 total. The empanada hit just right--crispy on the outside, sweet-savory pork and pickled daikon inside, and that cilantro bite made it pop. Coffee was smooth but bold, exactly what you need to wake up downtown. The crew behind the counter was super friendly and knew their beans--Robusta straight from Vietnam, no joke. The latte hit all the right notes--bright purple, sweet from real ube cream, with that smooth VietFive robusta kick. The counter to order was very long and there were plenty of tables of chairs available and they weren't cramped close to one another. The menu was located on the far back wall and the font was small so it was hard to look at the menu while ordering at the counter, but fortunately nobody was behind me in line while ordering. I ordered three drinks to try different things. First was the Pink Señorita with strawberry, pitaya, matcha, and coconut milk. Second was the Pistachio Honey Latte with pistachio, honey, and choice of matcha according to the menu, though I wasn't given a choice of matcha. Last was Bluetiful which included blueberry, blue spirulina, collagen, matcha, and vanilla almond milk. Pink Señorita was probably the more flavorful drink of the three although something about it the strawberry gave off an artificial taste. The Pistachio Honey Latte had a nice pistachio flavor that didn't overpower the matcha. Bluetiful was the least favorite drink since it didn't taste like anything at all; it had an interesting blue color but other than that it tasted like heavily diluted matcha with no hints of blueberry or vanilla almond milk or anything at all. All of these were ordered in 20 oz cups and I felt the price of $8.95 was a bit steep for each of the three, especially considering that the drinks didn't all taste quite as expected. By no means are the drinks from Matcha Cita authentic Japanese style matcha drinks, but they provide a bougie twist on classic matcha similar to other higher priced smoothie and juice shops. I did notice it was unsanitary for the barista to touch the garbage bag behind the counter as if she was about to throw out the trash, take my order at the register, and then start making the drinks without washing her hands, but I didn't want to make a scene and call her out on it; at least she wasn't touching the ingredients directly with her hands, I guess. If you're craving a unique type of drink on a hot day in the West Loop, Matcha Cita is an option but it may be better to stick with the basics and try to watch the barista making your order behind the counter to ensure proper food handling practices are performed.

It looks like people love the specialized matcha drinks, so I wonder if the added flavors masks the matcha to make it more appealing. If you want a matcha that has depth and complexity in flavor, this spot isn't the place to get it from. That being said, I loved the design and layout of the cafe, and the branding was adorable. The pastries looked delicious, and I'd be curious to come back and try it! I wonder if the coffee is better than the matcha.

Their HOJICHA LATTES were what brought me in the door. Hojicha drinks can be quite hard to come by, especially compared to the seemingly endless match options out there. Noble Fat absolutely does them RIGHT, serving rich, wonderfully fragrant hojicha lattes that are genuinely unforgettable. We tried the Banana Bread Hojicha and the Black Sesame Hojicha. Both were incredible, but the Black Sesame Hojicha was my personal favorite. Don't skip out on their little treats. We tried their Ube "Mochi Cake," and it absolutely blew my mind. Perfect texture. Pleasant flavor. Biting into it instantly transported me back to my college days in Champaign-Urbana, where I'd frequently stop by my favorite little Japanese bakery, Suzu's Bakery. Dare I say, Noble Fat's "Mochi Cake" just might've topped it. The ambiance and service is perfect. Cozy and welcoming. Whether you're settling in for a long-overdue catch-up with an old friend or opening up your laptop for an afternoon of productivity, this is the kind of café that makes you want to linger.
