It's not a good representation of what Vietnamese coffee really is. Tasted like pretty weak coffee with a hint of chicory and a little condensed milk. Real Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk is way better and you can get that at almost any Vietnamese restaurant in uptown. Truly excellent shop - patient, friendly staff (Tuan, the owner, is so kind!), delicious food and drinks, and a beautiful/vibrant interior. Found this absolute gem near the hotel I'm staying at while I'm here for the weekend. As soon as we walked through the door, the owner and staff helped us with recommendations and clarifications. We got in super early and were looking to explore, so the Vietnamese coffee was an amazing pick-me-up. Strong, creamy, sweet and delicious - the coconut condensed milk base had a well rounded and not overstated flavor too (though the classic is definitely going to be my go to). The banh mi empanada was a very original idea and turned out great in execution. Had all the classic banh mi ingredients within a classic South American vessel. Tuan told me how he came up with it - really enjoyed chatting with him as he cooked! His passion for cooking and his customers really showed through - he treated my girlfriend and I to a free, fresh tofu empanada just so we could try a little more Chicago food. I had high hopes for Vietfive Coffee and it did not disappoint. I did not have a chance to fully explore Chicago's Vietnamese cuisine scene like I wanted to but I made it a point to come here. Coming from Houston, TX where I'm surrounded by high quality Vietnamese cuisine and coffee I was ready to be wowed and Vietfive brewed up a memorable experience! First of all, the coffee was excellent! I've had a lot of good ca phê sữa đá and I've had some mediocre ones as well. The ca phê sữa đá at Vietfive was exceptional. It had the strong robusta flavor I love and the condensed milk made it just sweet enough but not overwhelmingly sweet. I would put it up there with some of the best I've had in Houston. You really cannot go wrong with the coffee here. I had heard about the bánh mì empanada and I was intrigued. Having grown up eating empanadas and having come to love bánh mì, this sounded like a match made in heaven and the wheels in my head started spinning about how many more Mexican-Vietnamese combinations and collaborations could be created. I ordered the tofu bánh mì. I enjoyed every bite. The tofu and vegetables were seasoned fantastically and it was quite filling. If I could offer any feedback, I'd say that the empanada crust was a bit too toasted and thus too flaky and stiff. Otherwise it was awesome! I wish I would have ordered another one. In fact I regret not ordering a bánh mì but I was headed to Timeout Market afterwards and needed to save room in my bánh mì belly. The vibe inside was laidback and chill. There were limited seats but I was able to find a table quickly and enjoy my ca phê sữa đá and bánh mì empanada. Service was good. Quick and polite. I'll be back, the next time I'm in Chicago to try an actual bánh mì, a few more empanadas and that exceptional coffee. We actually stumbled upon this place by surprise, wasn't even looking for coffee but knew I had to stop by. Absolutely loved the owner. Very friendly and enthusiastic about the product they serve. As he mentioned, the coffee beans were harvested from his family farm so it's not like the regular viet coffee most place serve (cafe du Monte). I think it's unique in that sense where it has a "farm-to-table" origin story. I haven't really seen a viet coffee shop in the west loop, so I really appreciate the modern-cultural on take this place offer. The cafe itself was very spacious, comfortable and stylish. The cafe was thoughtfully designed so that it didn't feel cramped like most cafes. I would use as a study space in the future. We ordered the Cà Phê Sữa with condense milk both iced and hot. Definitely should get it iced (as thats is how it is traditionally made) instead of hot. Great authentic depths of flavor, I will be back! read more

What a chic little cafe on Madison! I've tried to stop by here once before but it's only open until 2pm. I was excited to be able to go today. I got an iced coffee with coconut sweetened condensed milk. It was smooth but not overly sweet. I tried a couple different items including a bbq chicken bahn mi empanada and an ube brownie. The empanada comes with a spicy mayo sauce to dip and was delicious! The ube brownie was so good and topped with shredded sweetened coconut. Will definitely come back! read more

AH-MAZING. VietFive has been on my to-try coffee list for awhile now and I finally had a chance to swing by...twice! It was just as good as I hoped and more. Both times I had the iced Ca Phe Sua with oatmilk & agave and both times were delicious. You get the strong flavor of the robusta coffee with a bit of sweetness from the agave and creaminess from the oatmilk. I've heard good things about the ube latte from my sister but I have yet to try it. I wish I lived in the city because I would be here every day. The only downside is they do close early (2pm) so that's a bit of a bummer if you can't make it before then. I will definitely be back soon! read more

For a decaf person (not by choice), it was disappointing that VietFive -- like another suburban Viet place -- does not offer decaf. Guess I'm not destined to enjoy Viet places. And I got kind of a dissing look for asking for decaf. So I ordered only a banh mi to take home; turned out to be mostly chewy bread, with an underwhelming amount of the tofu-based sandwich makings. The very front of the store is okay if unexciting, but the pickup counter and another nearby area are messy, with some things stored haphazardly on the floor against the back wall that should have been stored in the store's rear area out of our sight. Almost the ambiance of somebody's unkempt place in a parental basement, with aspects that could possibly get a citation from inspectors. The founder has posted a story of being persecuted high on a corner wall, but the print is so small that I could barely make out a few sentences before they called out my name. So good for him, making his way, but he needs to hire a retail-space designer. Won't be going there again. read more

Friends and I checked out VietFive for the first time. My friends thought it was solid coffee & a good ube donut. I got the boat float, which was soft serve+granola+coffee poured on top -- unique combo in my opinion. I was into it; it was refreshing on a warm day w/ a little boost of coffee too. I will say, I expected "ube soft serve" to be actual ube soft serve I guess, not a plain soft serve with ube syrup on top of it. The soft serve parts that didn't have ube syrup on it weren't super flavorful. Could have done with more of the ube flavor itself. I've been here two times now. The first time visiting there were so many things I liked about it. The coffee was really good, but expensive. They serve Vietnamese coffee (mixed with condensed milk or coconut milk and served over ice; some places blend it all together Ca Phe Dua, but not here). They do not serve any espresso drinks (cortado, cappuccino, etc). They do have an Ube (purple yam) latte, but I think it's with Vietnamese coffee. Their black Vietnamese coffee is around $5. This is also an excellent spot to work from, this makes up for the expensive coffee in my opinion. Plenty of natural light. Not too many tables, but tables are big and each seemed to have an outlet nearby. Employees were terrific. Lots of good vibes. I wouldn't recommend the food. I had one of the empanadas and one of the puff pastries. Neither was particularly good. The second time I visited i wasnt able to stay for long and this confirmed the suspicion I had. The coffee on it's own is good, but not $6 good (in my opinion). Still, a treat to try! read more

I got the ube latte plus coffee and the flavor was really lacking, I could barely taste the ube and the coffee. I also got their house special banhmi and the bread was toasted so much it literally became croutons. My roof of my mouth is yelling for relief. The customer service was non-existent and lack of sitting due to probably a pop up art sales where they removed all the seats and tables besides the one next to the door where it's chilly. Hubby and I heard about Vietfive through a friend so we decided to check it out when we were in the area. The staff member who helped us was super friendly and also told us about the history of Vietfive Coffee. We both had the ca phe sua (VietFive Robusta medium roast coffee brewed through a Phin coffee filter served traditionally with condensed milk) and a BBQ pork empanada. I wanted to try the banh pate but they didn't have any at the time. The coffee was strong (as it should be) but I couldn't finish it all in one go. I was afraid it would be too sweet but the sweetness level was fine. We both gobbled down our BBQ pork empanadas but I wish they were bigger since they were pretty small for $5. Hubby also had the VietFive ice drip cream (non-dairy soft serve) which he enjoyed. I'm not a huge fan of non-dairy ice cream but I could barely tell that it wasn't made with dairy products. read more

A friend in LA had told us about Vietfive a while ago. Now we are in Chicago visiting the daughter and we have to try it. The storefront on Madison is so cute and inviting. Inside there are friendly staff and descriptions on the wall about the origin of the coffee. We ordered the Ca Phe Sua (coffee with milk) in 3 variations. We tried the ca phe sua with coconut condensed milk, with oat milk and agave, and as an iced ube latte. We also ordered a Veggie Banh Mi Empanada and a Veggie Banh Mi Sandwich. The ca phe sua with coconut condensed milk tasted great with hints of what we thought was nutmeg. So tasty! The oat milk with agave was a nice accent to the splendid coffee and was not overly sweet. The iced ube latte was an ube celebration with a rich spectacular flavor. Yay! The banh mi empanada was very good with a mix of pickled carrots, cucumbers, and radishes accented with a traditional herb mix all folded into a flaky empanada shell. This was very tasty. The veggie banh mi sandwich was also delectable with pickled carrots, pickled diakon radishes, cucumber, tomato, avocado, red and yellow peppers, and spices. This sandwich was excellent with a perfect combination of banh mi tastes. We loved Vietfive for both its superior coffee options as well as the banh mi festival we experienced with both the empanada and the sandwich. So yummy! read more

I tried their Vietnamese coffee while meeting with a friend there and it was ok but I've had much better. It was a bit on the bitter side, which it shouldn't be. Their banh mi was very disappointing. The bread was so incredibly hard I couldn't bite into it! The flavors were rather bland. The đồ chua was not crunchy but soggy and bland, and the chicken was super dry. As far as I'm concerned, that was not a true banh mi. Decided to give them one more try today so my son and I picked up banh mi empanadas to go. We got home and found that they were practically burnt to a crisp! I had to scrape off the entire black charred top! After biting into it, it had absolutely no flavour and again, the chicken was dry. The only thing that had any flavour was the dipping sauce, which wasn't enough to get you through the whole flavourless empanada. I really wanted to love this but I don't think I will go back. If you know Vietnamese food, this just ain't it! Unless of course you enjoy food that has no flavour and chicken that is dry. read more

This was, hands-down, the best banh mi I've ever eaten... no question. I've been to some of the city's staples like Nhu Lan, Saigon Sisters, and numerous other pop-ups. I'm also not a fan of boutique places, because they usually don't "deliver." But Vietfive's sandwich was like nothing else I've experienced at these places. The bread had the loveliest crunch, a gorgeous texture, and didn't take jaws of steel to tear through. The pickled daikon had the familiar funk waft off it, at first, but settled into a mild something amazing I can't explain. The chicken had an unctuous, savory flavor that pulled it all together into something akin to making-out with a beautiful stranger. The prices follow what you'd expect from any other Fulton Market fare. But I don't feel jilted... this is actually the best banh mi I've found. Anywhere. read more

I ordered an iced coffee with coconut condensed milk, which was the perfect amount of sweetness. I feel like Vietnamese coffee can sometimes be overly sweet, but the one I got had a good balance. I also didn't get super jittery and didn't feel like I had a caffeine overload after drinking, which often happens to me with Vietnamese coffee. The inside is super cute and the employees were all very friendly. I also got a strawberry donut, which was a bit stale, but I also came in around 1pm so I'm sure it had been sitting out since morning. The frosting was very good though.
