He described it as a non nonsense, no frills place, but the food is on point. I meant to checkout Pinoy Sa-Wrap a few feet down, but they weren't doing kitchen service when I came through, so I ended up here instead. It was time for a come back anyway. There's a bit of improvement - it seems roomier and a lot brighter. Half the tables were occupied given it's a lunch rush and all. After taking a quick look at what they had to offer, place my orders in: MONGO AND ANY CHICKEN: Special 2 item combo for the day (at $3 less than regular price.) Didn't try the mongo, but the chicken curry was delicious! DAING NA BANGUS AND PORK STEAK: The fish was dried, seasoned and a considerable size! The small snag is that it isn't boneless, BUT the size totally makes up for it. The pork steak (it's bisteck but pork version) was tender and savory delicious. CANTALOUPE DRINK: The genius behind the way they make it here is that they shred the fruit small so it doesn't get stuck in the straw! Could use a bit more sugar, but still delish. It was gone by the time I got home. Also got an order of pork adobo and paksiw to take home. FOOD: 5. SERVICE: 4. VALUE: 4. PARKING: Shared Private lot with others. Plenty of spots open. Not an issue. OVERALL: 4.25. Glad that other place was closed. It gave me the chance to come back. And with this last run, I'm sure to be coming back more often.

Kristel was incredibly friendly and attentive, and we even got to meet the owner, Zaldy, who treated us like family. He even surprised our son with ice cream which was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture. The restaurant itself is clean, cozy, and has a welcoming vibe. You have to order from the kiosk but the guy working today was super friendly. Service was quick which is a plus. We got it to go but there are seats inside that you can sit at and enjoy. First, a little disclaimer: I don't think there's one "perfect" way to make halo-halo. A lot of it comes down to personal preference and which ingredients you enjoy. As long as you have the basics--shaved/crushed ice, evaporated milk, ube halaya, ice cream, and an assortment of goodies like beans, jellies, rice crispies, flan, bananas, etc.--everyone has their own version that hits the spot. When I visited, there was only one staff member working, but he was friendly, helpful, and handled everything well. The first thing that caught my attention was the large neon halo-halo sign and the digital menu displayed on the TV. Both looked great and definitely gave the shop some personality. Then I looked over and saw the familiar folding tables and chairs you'd normally see at a family party. I'm not sure if they're still in a soft-opening stage or if this is already the finished setup, but the seating area could use a little more work. This location used to be Ben Scoops, another Filipino-inspired ice cream shop, and you can still see some remnants of the previous store. It doesn't seem like there was a major redesign of the space. One thing to keep in mind: there's no public restroom for customers. For the halo-halo, I ordered the Classic and the Avocado. Both were good and I enjoyed trying them, but personally, they weren't the best halo-halo I've had. Carson--and the surrounding South Bay area--has a huge Filipino community with plenty of restaurants and dessert shops, so there's definitely a lot of competition. There are other places nearby where I can get halo-halo that I enjoy just as much, if not more, for a lower price. Still, I'm glad I gave D Baker's Lab a try. They have a creative menu with several interesting halo-halo variations, so you may find one that fits your taste better than the traditional version. Location tip: It can be a little hard to spot. It's in the same plaza as Thai BBQ and tucked toward the middle corner of the shopping center. I'd still come back to try some of their other flavors though--maybe one of those will be the one that really hits the spot for me Overall: good halo-halo, friendly service, and a cool neon presentation--but for the price and the amount of Filipino dessert competition around Carson, I'd probably explore a few other options too.
