Well...we have been coming here for years. We enjoy the food and the setting. However, the last 2-3 times we've gone, the service has tanked. I believe we saw our server 4 times: once for a drink order, once to deliver the drinks and take our food order, once to deliver the bill, and once to take our money. We sat for 20 minutes with empty drinks, and 30 minutes with dirty plates and old food sitting on our table. The dirty dishes were only picked up when our bill was delivered. I guessed we actually saw our servers and bussers for a max total of 5 minutes in an hour and a half's time. Now you want a 20%+ tip? For 5 minutes? Lets say on a $100.00 bill that would come out to $ 240.00 an hour for carrying a plate of food and 2 drinks 40 feet to our table. As I looked around, everyone in the dining room that were done eating had a pile of dirty plates and glasses under their nose. People should not feel obligated to tip for absolutely lousy service. I believe I was told they don't "pre bus" any more. For good service I tip well. For bad service, I tip accordingly. Will not be back read more

Went to McVey's for the first time on Friday night. It was good. Plenty of free parking behind the restaurant. Our party of seven had reservations in the bar. We had drinks before dinner, the bartender was very good although I was disappointed they do not have any beer on tap. Bread, bean salad, and coleslaw comes before dinner and it was delicious. I ordered the Lake Perch sauteed and a baked potato. All of the food was good. Service was a tad slow and one of our party had to get up to get menus, but the place was packed and once our server arrived, she was friendly and efficient. Best deal in NWI? The $25 prime rib on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It's a massive cut of meat cooked to perfection and served with sides and warm bread. We dined here for lunch on Friday and the phone was ringing off the hook for reservations. My guess is the prime rib tends to run out early. While my husband had the prime rib, I had house made crab cakes and macaroni and cheese. The crab cakes were very tasty. Another good deal? The children's burger meal with milk and a side. It's a hand-formed patty served on a soft brioche bun with a side and a drink. This could easily serve an adult. The restaurant is fine and decorated nicely but it's clearly aged and a little stale smelling. Overall, though, it's a great place for lunch or that fantastic prime rib dinner. read more

After several years later (9 to be exact), we tried McVeys again. Had pretty much the same menu items. Sirloin, crab cakes, shrimp, baked potato. With the addition of broasted chicken. I suppose I should say it was not a bad meal, better than the 2 stars I gave last time. But I can't understand the 4-5 stars others are giving. Other than it's fairly priced compared to similar restaurants, and our server was very nice, the food was just ok. All was tasty (except the artichoke dip ) but we got the and bottom of the bag chip crumbs ( which I believe are Aldi tortilla rounds). There were only a few big enough to actually dip with. The funniest thing is my husband mentioned his croutons tastes like the "fair". Which were the exact words I used to described them years ago. They have not changed, but I liked them this time. We happened to find McVey's on a Sunday evening, when they had prime rib as the special. Of course, we ordered it, and it was perfect. The coleslaw and bean salad appetizers were a nice addition to the usual bread offering. Our food was seasoned well. Our server was attentive and friendly, as was everyone, from hostess to busers. My son soup was mostly vegetables the little bit of broth, but he thought the broth taste excellent, the steaks were prepared to order, medium medium rare cooked three large fried shrimp they were cooked perfection served with cocktail sauce. It was delicious. My steak was perfectly cooked. I did ask for no salt as I can't have salt. I opted for french fries without salt and onion. Steak with, sautéed mushrooms my wife steak also came with sautéed mushrooms. The only of the night were my wife's sautéed shrimp. They had a weird breading at them, which I did not consider that sautéed that they were nowhere near as good as my friend shrimp and she did not eat them. My son enjoyed the crabcakes as well as the crab legs. Everything was cooked well for you for three dollars I opted for water. It was served with lemon and ice. My wife had a Pepsi and my son had a raspberry free refills again the service was excellent we were tentatively taken care of and the only miss was my wife shrimp, based on everything I give them four stars I would say 4 1/2 but yelp does not allow that shrimp. It was not a five star experience. You're in the area. This is definitely worth checking out in the back 21 and over section it was moderately noisy, we were assisted by several staff members. Just visited McVey's for the first time yesterday /200828 and i was knocked out i hadn't known of this restaurant. i got the BBQ rubbed pork chop dinner You get 2 well-prepared chops and it was excellent with cinnamon butter sweet baked potato and cinnamon baked apple sides: all exceptional. The free appetizer of bean salad and a sweet cole slaw also very good. We sat in the bar and it was late afternoon so it was quiet. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I love this place and look forward to trying more of their varied menu of fish and meats. I highly recommend this restaurant. The $$ are very reasonable and a good value. I have heard good things about McVey's and stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. Despite being very busy with a party on the other side, our service was wonderful and fast.
