They did run out of my pain medicine on 3 different occasions, one lasting almost 24 hrs when I was supposed to be receiving every 3 to 4 hrs. They did one time go into the emergency med kit to give me one dose during this time. Food not bad. Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy was amazing!! I worked with Katie, Dori, Jennessy, Tierra, Jalwad, Ivan, Aldren, Jazmin Theresa and Bailey. They worked with me through exercise and physical challenges to rehabilitate me and it worked. Overall, most people at the facility were very nice, helpful and would address any concerns promptly. This was my first time at a Skilled Nursing Facility and my experience took a little time to get adjusted to but at the end I was very grateful for everyone. I want to give a shout out to the entertainment Director. She is bubbly and super kind. The perfect person for this position. The facility can use some new equipment in p.t. People like to identify what they're eating and the person who has dementia can't remember what all the foods are (and that they're safe to eat) if you can't identify them. During my stay I was assigned to Fairmont, Wellington II, Lexington, and Santa Fe. Despite those moves, I experienced recurring concerns with completion of my bowel program and missed scheduled suprapubic catheter changes. There were also attempts to coerce me to remain in bed on a scheduled seating day. Because I depend on staff for transfers, had I succumbed to that pressure, it would have affected my independence, routine, and quality of life. A resident should not feel that staying in bed is the only option because assistance is not willingly provided. I repeatedly advocated for myself and participated in meetings. Ultimately, the options presented did not provide a long-term solution compatible with my needs, so I chose another placement. Kyle Dawson (Administrator): It was a pleasure to officially meet you for the first time during what became my final VRB meeting. Thank you for the confirmations of "no" that helped resolve suspicions of my own. Your comments about checking seasoning expiration dates and random tray pulls reminded me of HBO's Getting On. Dark comedy suddenly did not feel so far-fetched. Food has been one of the most persistent complaints I heard during my stay. In my experience, much of it is highly processed, vegetables are often overcooked, and residents have jokingly called the chicken "suspicious" and beef "mystery meat." Checking seasonings and occasionally sampling a tray cannot address concerns about taste, quality, waste, or residents not wanting to eat. I especially commend families who bring meals and spend countless hours ensuring their loved ones are cared for. Your presence does not go unnoticed. To families and staff: advocate, listen, and BE KIND. Everyone is human. To staff who used VRB as a stepping stone and moved forward: I saw myself in you. Keep pursuing work aligned with your purpose. Staff set the tone of a resident's day, and residents deserve care from people who want to provide it. To anyone considering working at VRB or placing a loved one here: know your rights, document concerns, and advocate. Resources include the San Diego County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), San Diego County Adult Protective Services (APS), and California Labor Commissioner's Office--Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), when applicable. Fast forward 30 years, and this place was going to let my dad drown in his own fluid because they didn't take his edema seriously. Although my dad has AFIB, diabetes, and Renal failure, they did not order dialysis or a pacemaker. Thank goodness I listened to my gut and called 911. Two months later and my dad is 30 lbs lighter and is no longer on oxygen.

What I got instead was a facility that treats clients like a revenue stream, not people. Staff conduct: Two front-desk staff -- Dani, and a coworker who wears blue scrubs "to look important" (her words, when I asked) -- raised their voices at me and told me to leave the facility. I then spent 3 hours outside in the heat arranging a Lyft and a last-minute hotel. While this was happening, I overheard them talking about me behind my back and scrolling their phones to shop online instead of attending to clients. Unlicensed staff, ignored medical needs: The CCTs supervising the housing unit are not licensed or certified. My documented conditions -- fibromyalgia, arthritis, severe insomnia, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, musculoskeletal issues -- along with my PCP's orders for Spravato care and knee injections, went completely unaddressed. I had no access to a dietitian despite my dietary restrictions and was essentially living on avocados, losing weight I didn't need to lose. Missing property, no HIPAA accountability: When I asked what would happen to my prescribed medications (prescribed by my own doctor, for use in my home state) since I wasn't allowed to take them with me, staff shrugged and told me they'd simply be destroyed. I left with multiple personal items missing -- two pairs of shoes, suitcase locks, toiletries, prescribed skin cream -- and was never given the property inventory I requested. Pressure tactics: After I fought for two days to be discharged, staff called my husband to try to talk me into staying. We didn't fall for it. The bottom line: Admissions promised reimbursement for my flights, hotels, and rideshares, plus restitution to my insurance (BCBS FEP). I'm still waiting. I have records of everything -- dates, costs, conversations. If you're considering treatment, look hard at a local IOP before you spend thousands of dollars and fly across the country for this. Her care had become more than our family could safely provide around the clock, but that didn't make the decision any easier. We visited many assisted living communities and board-and-care homes, and unfortunately, many of them left us feeling discouraged and heartbroken. The moment we walked into Sunview Gardens, it felt completely different. It was warm, welcoming, and truly felt like a home. The residents were beautifully cared for, dressed nicely, with their hair done, and they genuinely seemed happy and comfortable. There was a warmth and positive energy there that we simply hadn't felt anywhere else. Our mom spent the last few years of her life at Sunview Gardens, and looking back, our only regret is that we didn't make the decision sooner. She loved her home there. She made wonderful friends, and most importantly, she was surrounded by caregivers who treated her with genuine love, patience, dignity, and kindness. The owners clearly take great pride in Sunview Gardens, and that care is reflected in everything--from the incredibly clean and well-kept environment to the attention each resident receives. We always felt that our mom was known, valued, and truly cared for as a person, not simply as a resident. If you are struggling with the guilt and worry that can come with moving someone you love into assisted living, I completely understand. We were once in that exact position. It is a very small facility; the staff definitely should have been paying closer attention. In addition, we hired a third party care-giver to stay with her overnight one day/night. This person notified us that a caregiver at Sunview literally yelled at our loved one for coming to the breakfast room before it was time. Stay away from this place if your loved one needs Memory Care.
