When I asked her for the breakdown of the check to make sure I didn't get charged for the double espresso she let out a sigh and rolled her eyes. My mom simply asked which pastry she would recommend that had less cream, and instead of helping, she sarcastically responded, "What do you want me to do, remove the cream from the pastry?" When my mom asked why she was speaking to her that way, she never apologized and just said, "We're moving on from this conversation." I was in the area when I noticed this bakery and of course I had to check it out. Welcoming and friendly service. They sell freshly baked bread, croissants, pies, tarts, cookies, cakes and much much more. Everything looked delicious and appetizing. Been here since I was a kid and haven't been back in decades. Went a couple of months ago and the pastries are still excellent. I'm sure the ownership is different now but the quality is still good. We were greeted with smiles and the cafe is cozy. Most people come here to reminisce on pastries they bought with their friends back in grade school. We use to get the swan custard puffs which they still have but sell out quick before noon! There seems to always be 1-2 left but I'm sure if you call ahead they can make a bunch for you! One of my favorites is the apple tart filled w/ custard w/ a cherry on top. (A+) Just the right amount of sweetness and the crust tastes like a soft cookie. I've been here several times in the last few years and I've been disappointed more times than not. First, the good: Cheesecake slices are solid. Chocolate mousse, when they have it, is fantastic. Almond tart is my fave, light and just the right touch of sweet. Depends on the day: Sometimes the service is friendly and knowledgeable, sometimes its slow and apathetic. Croissants are sometimes fresh and wonderful, sometimes they seem like day-olds. And now the bad: Mini raspberry tarts...the part I ate before seeing the moldy berries was good (this happened 2x, so I'm not gonna try again). The last time i went, service was bad, like they were annoyed with my question bad, and there was a fly in the case. I left without ordering anything. I've always passed by this location when they have already closed, but was finally able to go Sunday 07/27 early in the day. Their pastries look all very nice, so do their regular size cakes. They didn't have many breads or cookies left when I looked at the display, which it was fine, since I was more in the mood for something sweet. I ordered their crème brûlée and a lemon cake/mousse and honestly they were just okay. The crème brûlée had a consistency of pudding instead of a custard, and it was very bland, the only good thing was the caramelized sugar on top. The lemon mousse had a what I think maybe was a spongy cake on the bottom which was average, but the mousse part was actually really good. If they sold the mousse in the same tins that they sell their crème brûlée I think it would be much better. I personally don't like chocolate and lemon together, I don't think the combination goes well, and around the lemon mousse there was a milk chocolate shell which I just thought it was unnecessary, but I know that's a matter of preference. This is our new discovery, although Village French Bakery has been in Kenneth Village for a long time. We live in Burbank, very close, but we just didn't know about it. It is now our go-to bakery! I'm really disappointed with my experience here. I purchased a couple slices of cheesecake and before even taking a bite, I noticed visible mold inside the slice. There were clearly discolored gray/white spots baked into the cheesecake -- obvious enough that I didn't even feel safe tasting it. This is a serious food safety concern. Cheesecake is dairy-based and should never be sold past freshness, especially with visible mold. I had to throw everything away. For a bakery with their prices and reputation, this level of quality control is unacceptable. Please check your product rotation and storage more carefully. I won't be coming back. read more

And flaky, properly created authentic to the original French (not Tasmanian, for example) icon? At hours that normal folks can visit? Below the price of $10 a piece? In a clean and friendly environment? Where you can buy, let's say, two dozen pieces on the spot, to take to an upscale event? Good luck! They are scarcer than crow's teeth here. With a full week of scrolling and swiping I have finally found a couple that satisfy most of these criteria, i.e., clean, friendly, good schedule, good variety, well priced, high quality and authentic, and in a lovely reachable neighborhood too. On a dismal gray February day, leaping between downpours, we made our way to Village French Bakery and feel our selecting this pastry emporium amid the hundreds of others that failed our checklist was truly justified. I want to take a couple of dozen of the best French-style pastries to a morning event taking place soon, and I don't want all of them to be sweet, as this is a breakfast gig and a lot of people no longer want a sugar high first thing in the morning. (It is such an American thing to throw sugar --- or worse, high fructose corn syrup [yech] into every meal element. Do people now sprinkle their over-easies with granules too? Just saying ...) There is only one tiny thing that bothers me here and everywhere else: there is very little in-store stock of croissants (not cakes and other delicious dessert items like cake-- see my pictures) at almost any time of day past 7 am. Bummer. At least one can get to Village French easily (right off the 5 freeway) and we can order by phone a few days in advance for pickup. I am not sure why this is, other than, pastries don't hold up well sitting for days on a shelf and bakeries, as elegant and exquisite as they can be, like this one, have small profit margins. OR, their croissants are so amazingly good that they sell out immediately, every single day. In any case, they are doing us a service and since I am grateful this bakery exists at all, I will not complain. I feel lucky to have found it. read more

Just also heads up, the Russian cashier also has issues with pretty women. She likes to get attention with male only so maybe work at a bar or something not a run down fake French cafe. Horrible Customer Service Experience The Russian woman working at the counter was extremely rude and dismissive. Her attitude was completely inappropriate for a service setting--especially in cafe, where basic courtesy is expected. She appeared anxious and confrontational over small mistakes, such as when I accidentally picked up the wrong coffee, and treated other customers the same way. She also flirted with men and my partner but extremely rude to women. When she smiled at my partner he noticed she had green all over her teeth. What's worse, I overheard her making disrespectful, racially insensitive remarks during another interaction. The café itself was also in poor condition--dirty floors, trash left around, and tables that hadn't been wiped down. The pastries were dry and tasteless, and I ended up throwing mine away along with the coffee. This place seriously needs better management, staff training, and cleaning standards.
