Came here once, Chelsea did a great job serving us. Had a very natural and charismatic style of service. Every beverage had a napkin--it was incredible. Came back next time I was in town. Unfortunately she wasn't working, so I "bellied up" to the bar. The 'tender missed the "bev nap" on the first beer, but on the second beer she nailed it. Chickens quesadillas came with mexi-rice which is something I've never seen. I was blown away. 4.99/5 stars. Although we have regularly dined at the Village Grill, despite its mediocre food (as correctly reviewed by others), it is usually quick and local, so we sacrifice quality for convenience. Tonight, however, we were spared the mediocre food, because the three people seating customers thought it was more important to deviate from the waiting list and seat on a who is our friend basis. So, even if you are 83 years old with no place to sit, a chemo patient trying to muster the strength to wait, it doesn't matter. Prepare to get kicked to the curb, if you are not a young healthy teen/friend of the host/seating team, or pal of the owner. You don't matter. Customer service is a ZERO. One star is too many! When you question why they take people ahead of you --watching people who clearly came in behind you get seated, you will hear total B.S. such as "they called ahead." But, if they called ahead, why did they come up right behind me and put their name on the list just like me? Why didn't they say, "we are xxx with a reservation? Bottomline, if you want to get treated like John Candy in "Summer Rental" for mediocre food, then good luck! We bolted. Better to choose another place where a customer is valued. This is a great neighborhood eating spot and gathering place! We've been coming here for years. I've seen some reviews that talk about long waiting for service. Several years ago, I would have said the same thing. Today, it's a place that we can come for a quick (or leisurely) brunch on Sunday or lunch. Service is always prompt, there have been new items added to the menu (the Brussels Sprouts appetizer is absolutely awesome!!!). If you like chicken lemon rice soup, I think that theirs is the best. Large assortment of soups and their soup/salad bar offers great options. Although all of the service we've received here over the last couple of years has been very pleasant and efficient, I'd like to give a special shout out to Margie. She is a delight as a server.....attentive, concerned that our dining experience is a positive one........dotes on my elderly Mom. I always hope to be seated in her section. The Village Grill has so much potential - great space, great location and (unbelievably) a completely lack luster kitchen. The food is what you would expect to see and taste in a college cafeteria. Everything appears as though it arrived frozen, straight off a Gordon's or Sodexo truck. I'm curious as to why the owners don't try to match the location and ambience with the quality of food. If you are looking to grab a beer and some mediocre bar food during a game, go! If you are looking for nice outdoor seating on a warm summer day, go! Just don't expect much out of the kitchen. My wife and I went there last night to catch the games. Michigan, Wings & Tigers. Place was packed. We waited about 8 minutes for the hostess to quit talking to her friends and acknowledge us. Waitress was pleasant enough and kept checking on us. However we ordered an appetizer, veggie nachos (they were good). /within 3 minutes of the appetizer arriving the meal showed up. The server was not happy about taking it back until we were ready. Just had a horrible dinner. Unfortunately came after the soup/salad bar closed at 10 PM. Ordered Perch and it was like rubber, very disappointing. The mushroom soup was luke warm and was like lumpy oatmeal. Barely ate anything and returned most of my meal. Waiter never said a word, totally clueless. Not sure if I want to come back. My boyfriend and I stopped in this afternoon for a quick refuel. We ordered two chicken pita ranchers and a single side of fries up at the bar. The lady at the bar brought up our tab when my boyfriend proceeded to ask for a drink menu. She claimed there wasn't one so they continued with a short discussion, and my boyfriend decided to order a drink. He pulled out his ID, and after the lady looked at his ID for a good minute, she asked if he had anything else with his name on it. He then pulls out two other cards with his name on it . One of them had the same picture that his ID had. He even pulled down his mask so that she could have a clear look at his entire face. She still had a problem and said that she just didn't know; that he didn't look the same in the pictures. She asked him to stand up and at this point we were both over it. He told her never mind, that he didn't want it anymore, and that we didn't want the food anymore either. I am a biracial woman and my boyfriend is a black man. She made both of us feel uncomfortable, and we will never order from this restaurant again. read more

A solid three stars, because it is A-OK. We went here today for a business lunch and I checked out the Yelp reviews before hand, then became mildly skeptical of the place. Turns out it's pretty good. I had a corned beef Reuben, and it was delicious. The put a big cup of Thousand Island on the side so you can add as much as you want. Boss got a pizza, which looked pretty good. Co-worker got a caesar salad, which looked like a typical salad. And awesome boss' wife got a chicken rancher pita sandwich, which she really enjoyed. We also split an order of fries. It's decent food and good prices. It's a bar, it's not fine dining so don't expect haute cuisine, but it does what it does, and it does it well. read more

I have eaten here several times since I wrote my initial review and have to say things have improved. The service and food are much better. I can't remember everything I've had (hadn't been on Yelp in awhile) but I do remember I got fish and chips there one night and it wasn't too bad. Nothing spectacular, just good and I would get it again. My husband (formerly "boyfriend" lest anyone think I have a boyfriend AND a husband) likes their pizza, but I have not tried it. Occasionally this place will be good other times it is definitely lacking. Generally the service is mediocre. The beer selection isn't that impressive either. The positives are the bbq chicken pizza and chicken pita rancher, but be sure to order the pizza as a square. Prices are a bit pricey for what you get in my option but since it is in grosse pointe it is expected and accepted by the patrons of the Village Grill. I recommend it only if you are in this area and want to watch sports while you eat as there are not many sports bars in the GP area with decent food. read more

Have been in since the addition of the salad bar. Nice touch, but not a reason to slack off. Went in with out-of-town guests and were seated in the front room where our party of 9 could be seated. There was a busboy cleaning off tables AFTER the wrapped silverware were already in place. No spray bottle to clean tables, just a rag, which was used from table to table. Waiting to sit down I mentioned to him that three of the four tables in the room were still dirty and should be cleaned before anyone else was seated. Not sure if busboys are getting paid the $15/hour minimum wage, but his complaint was that he was the only busboy working at the time. Not the best attitude. Management alert: customers would like to be seated at a clean table, not one with grease streaks and clumps of food from the last ones to dine at the table. I ordered a dinner with a side of zip sauce tonite. I usually don't finish my dish. I always ask for a small container for my leftovers. My waitress Margie brought me a small container for my sauce, but unlike others, she brought a spoon to transfer the sauce to my carry out container. No one has ever done this and I've always used my dinner fork to do so, which as you might imagine could be messy! Thank you Margie for going that extra mile without being asked. She definitely is an asset to this establishment, always chatting and joking with the clientele! read more

Not good tonight at Village Grill. Went there with a friend for a bite to eat and a drink. My friend had called before we arrived to inquire about specials and was told it has half off pizza night. So we ate at the bar and each had a salad, bowl and a glass of wine. She got a piece of salmon on the side to eat with her salad . We ordered a "half off " pizza to go for her daughter and sister who had stayed home...long story short she asked to take her little itty bit of salad with the salmon to go and was told NO " you can't take salad to go" Fine. Then we get the bill and the pizza was full price ...then we were told by the very rude female tending the bar and waiting on us that the pizza was only half off if dining in! So my friend said ok I'll eat a piece right here! It was ridiculous...I said let's just go. Our waitress then said " so take it out on the waitress...MERRY XMAS" jeez Louise lady ! First opened several years ago those that haven't been there since the significant expansion are in for a treat. The casual atmosphere is suited for families as well as adults. The varied menu offers something for everyone with good taste at an affordable price. I found the staff pleasant and energetic with a willingness to accommodate every need. If you crave a thin crust pizza I strongly recommend the large round. You won't be disappointed. Looking to catch the latest sporting event on TV? Belly up to the expansive bar and settle in with viewing in every direction. I should note I was impressed enough after a couple visits to use the banquet room for a family party and have held 3 more since. Truly a gem worthy of repeat visits. read more

A year ago I would have given this place one star, but they have seem to have gotten their act together and for the Grosse Pointe area, which is very limited as far as the dining experience, it not too shabby. Superior bar food. Not awesome but perfectly good, standard, American pub fare with above average pizza (especially better than crappy Green Zone) and burgers, great service and reasonable pricing. September 4, 2016 We went in for a late lunch (never been before) and the atmosphere was pleasant. The Tiger's were on the big screen, the weather was awesome and we needed to eat, soI had the; "Village Burger" and my girlfriend had the; "Beef Burrito" and we had; "Calamari" as an appetizer. Okay here goes the breakdown - WOW! the food was awesome - all of it and we always get calamari as an appetizer at restaurants that offer it and the calamari at V.G. is in our; "Top-Five" - maybe; "Top-Three!" I've lived in grosse point for about five years and ya e always enjoyed this place ... my wife and I love the margaritas and the taco salads . The menu is huge and the pizzas are always fresh and made to order . Also the nachos are amazing as well. The service is always on point and no complaints from us .
