SUCH good, REAL pizza!!! WOW!! I was SO happy my cousin brought us here!!! I've even heard that if you bring your own ingredients, they will put it on your pizza for you!! We made two different pizzas, and I can't even say how good they were!! I wish I lived in Toledo to have this pizza more often!! The place is a VERY old bank and you have to go downstairs for the bathrooms. A bit spooky, but kind of cool. Be sure to look for the "Hair of the Dog" Palm Springs, Ca bumper sticker on the cooler door! That's from us! We REALLY appreciated them putting the sticker up for us! Pizza - 4 Atmosphere - 0 Service - 0 Value - 0 Friday night is pizza night at our house and after a steady rotation of high-quality local Toledo pies like Home Slice, Pizza Cat, Cameos/Reset, etc, we decided to try this Maumee staple. I now realize the "Idiot" does not cater to consumers looking to call in orders for pizza to carry out. If you are still hell-bent on trying, here are a few things to know before ordering pizza to go (based on our experience): 1. There's a 22% upcharge on call in orders. 2. You will be charged a cover to pick up your pizza to go unless you are persistent in explaining to the inebriated and combative gentleman at the door that you are not staying. 3. They will not let more than one individual inside to pick up said call-ahead order without paying a cover charge, even in 28 degree weather. 4. If you ask for a manager for clarification on the cover/call in policy, kitchen staff will point you to the man at the door. 5. No matter how polite you are in making your case to the word-slurring manager at the door, you will still be berated with a deluge of insults by the cadre of smokers huddled less than 20ft from the door. I want to present a simple math equation to illustrate the financial situation you can expect when utilizing the call-ahead feature when making a purchase: We ordered 4 pizzas ($61 total) The up-charge for the convenience of calling ahead was $2 each ($8 total) The cover charge for the evening was $5 each Hypothetically, for the $18 non-food cost, one could calculate the additional costs assumed by the business for call-ahead customers from the following factors: -We spent less than 15 minutes in the establishment -We did not take up any tables or bar space -We did not take any additional staff time from bar tenders or waitstaff -We did not dirty any glasses or silverware -We were confronted by management and dismissed by the prep cooks When it came to the actual product, the pizza did have plenty of high quality toppings and was very tasty. The crust was thin and stayed crispy despite the plethora of toppings. It was obvious that the crust was pre-made/store bought, but that did not take away from the taste - it was just disappointing for the cost of the pizza. Honestly really good pizza and great spirit/entertainment in the bar. I got a classic cheese pizza and came out in a decent time. Like I said great pizza. The only problem I have is that the bartender was a complete asshole. I was polite the whole time and tip 30% on a several drink tab but he continued to be rude. Found this place on yelp while at a kid's soccer tournament in Bowling Green. It ended up being a soccer bar. Perfect way to kill time between kids' matches. This is a bar, but kids are allowed before 4:00. It is self-service, so you have to approach and order at the pizza window and bar. The pizza is very good, but it's a little over-rated. This much is true, however: the toppings are incredible in both form and amount. Hand-cut pepperoni? Whole meatballs? Whole olives? Whole cloves of garlic? DAMN! The toppings are just out of this world. BUT... The pizza sauce? Meh. The cheese? Meh, and Meh again. The crust? Meh, to the third power. The guy refilling the paper towel holders seemed to make a habit of carrying the "clean" rolls way up under his arm...pretty much in his armpit. We came in around 5:00 with 2 adults and 3 19 year olds. The sign on the door said "only 21 after 4:00 on Friday and Saturday" but the guy at the door said we could come in and eat anyway as it would be before the music started. We ordered our food and waited and 2 different employees asked us if we were all over 21 and we explained we were told we could stay. One guy said they would give us our pizzas in boxes. While we were waiting a family with kids came in and sat in the front of the room. We got our food and started eating and the guy came and told us to leave. When we asked about the other kids that were allowed to stay he said they were kids of the musicians. I don't understand why we were treated the way we were - it was rude. Can't help but to say this place has a house full of Debbie Downer staff. There is a lack of respect and any sense of being courteous at all by them. The manager Joel is a TOTAL DICK. I have no idea why he is a manager and has not gotten fired. He is very choosey about his patrons and is super rude, talk about begging someone for a drink---don't bother you wont get one unless he likes you personally. It takes 3 hours to get a pizza so you sit there and get drunk, tip awesome then come back and get treated like shit and with no sense that they appreciated being tipped or remembered you tipping them all of the times you go in. I am new to Toledo and really loved this place and then I started to notice that everyone is in a bad mood and really dicky. There is a sense of extreme negativity in the bar and their service. I have been to several bars since we stopped going there because of feeling unwelcome. Funny, i have meet TONS of people at other bars that are super chill and have lived in Maumee their whole lives. They all agree this place is full of a bunch of people that make you super uncomfortable and unwelcome. I will say though, there are a couple of good ones. The Village Idiot is my favorite bar, well, on earth. Reason #1 for my undying affection: They have the absolute best beer selection I've ever witnessed. They carry all the standard domestic beer, plus an enormous selection of microbrews and lesser-known beers. From Anchor Steam to Bell's Kalamazoo Stout, from Rouge's line to Great Lakes' offerings, they have the gamut of delicious beer covered. Reason #2: The Idiot has live music EVERY night, and they get some really great acts. Some regular acts include The Ragbirds (my friends and favorites), Rootstand, Hullabaloo, local guitar phenom John Barille, Boogie Matrix Mechanism, and loads and loads of other great bands that I'm forgetting. Dancing is encouraged, and most of the time bar-owner Nicky will be grooving right there with ya! Reason #3: The pizza. It is legendary. It is fantastic. Portobello mushrooms are an option, and they LOAD the toppings on. It. Is. So. Good. My mouth is watering just typing this. Reason #4: The staff. This bar feels like a big family. Everyone is kind. Everyone is positive, and everyone accepts the goofy hilarity that comes with running a bar. As a friend of mine has witnessed, they will even pay for a cab if you can't drive yourself home.
