I left the gym and I was absolutely starved so I had to get a little something to eat and I had to pick up a pie to take to a neighbor's house for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow so what better place than village Inn they have fabulous pies so I came on down to the village Inn and I sat down to have a nutritious tuna sandwich I had on my little birthday tiara and the waiter asked me if it was my birthday and I said yes he says what we have free crêpes for birthday people so he brought out these crêpes now I'm not a crêpe fan, but these were amazing. They had strawberry on them And they were substantial. They had a nice thickness to them so I boxed up my tuna sandwich to go home and I enjoyed my crêpes and I took home a delicious mixed berry pie. I know my neighbors are gonna love it and then on my way out there was another bag for me. It had a slice of pie in it to go that someone had bought for me wow I really scored today!!! read more

medium busy but even so, service was mediocre, but that's not what gets this place such a low rating. The food was abysmal. If I wanted packaged mashed potatoes, I should save myself the money and get them at the store. At least then I could season them as they cook. I hope they don't use McCormack brand gravy mix because I'm not sure McCormack would appreciate the representation. I wish I could say the coleslaw was good but they need to upgrade their canned goods. At least if they went with Kirkland, they would be good and wouldn't leave a film on the teeth. As for pot roast: I considered sawing off the sole of my boot and asking to have them boil it, but if they seasoned my boot soles as they seasoned the pot roast, it would still only be marginally better than what was served. This place offers consistently solid food. It is very much a dinner menu-like with burgers, BLT and many breakfast options. Today, with the son after his SAT test. Service is fast and professional. We wanted Village Inn (because I know Village inn from living in Phoenix and my Houston friends wanted Chicken Fried Steak for breakfast) We thought we were going to be waiting a bit because the parking lot seemed full but we were seated right away when we walked in around 9:15am. Our waitress came about 3 minutes later asking us for our drinks. Village Inn has been around for a very long time and until recently many have changed name to 'Butter Smith' and have kept some of the items on the menu BUT the taste is not the same. The few Village Inns that still remain, I hope remain because their food is delicious. One of our favorite plates that is 'to die for' are the Green Chili Enchiladas with two over medium eggs on top. And extra Green Chile Sauce on the side. YUM! Just amazingly delicious. Their Menudo also has a very good taste - so good that I ordered 4 large menudos 'to go'. Their pies are also very good. I do have to say, that all personnel were very serving. Upon arrival the a very friendly hostess greeted us, asked whether we wanted a booth or table and asked us to follow her. Our waitress also was very friendly, was very prompt with our coffee and meal. Often she's come over to make sure we were not in need of something. Probably an off day for this particular restaurant. We usually love Village Inn! We were seated promptly by one of the hosts; party of four, around noon. Son and hubby went to the wash room, returned, and we browsed the menu. 7 minutes later did our server greet us and take our drink order. We also gave our food order. We didn't see our server for 20 minutes, and it took a total of 30 minutes for us to get our food. The manager did come by to inform us that the kitchen was backed up, that was only 5 minutes before the food came out. Once it did, we enjoyed room temperature food. I ordered the California Skillet which seemed that they didn't even cook the food on that skillet. Staff was nice, restaurant was clean, guests seemed happy. I almost never leave a bad review. If I have a bad experience I usually just check in and leave it at that. But this was by far the worst dinning experience I've ever encountered. I walk in and wait a few minutes to be sat, not a big deal, BUT when a waitress came to get menus I thought she was gonna sit me, ignored me and waited for a couple that was barely walking in and sat them... So that was weird. I should have followed my instinct and just left. The cashier sat me down and my waitress came and took my order. Not friendly, not cordial in the slightest. I figured "bad day", all good it happens. Brought coffee and no creamer or sugar. I had to keep asking for condiments. I should have left but by now I'm intrigued and I start paying attention to her interactions with other customers. It's what I was expecting to receive. Friendly, catering, communicative. Got to me and asked by mumbling and before I could even answer she was already walking off to the next table. I'm not even mad, it is what it is. Just wont come back to this location. We were looking for something more than a Denny's and found it here. The place was comfortable, it reminded me of Sambo's from back in the day with their classic dinning furnishings. I'm just so underwhelmed by Village Inn. The quality is just so low and the only good thing about this place is the service and the pies (although they're no where near as good as Belle Sucre's pies) and sometimes the menudo. Every time I think I'll actually order something off the menu, it arrives and it makes me want to scream, "WHYYYYYYYY?" The last time here, I saw their new "Mexican" items. Wah, wah, wah. Disappointing. I ordered the steak tampiquena and then was asked how I wanted it cooked. I thought that was a kind of strange question because the steak used in steak tampiquena is usually pretty thin so it's hard to produce anything but well, very well and extremely well. Two things crossed my mind; 1. This waitress doesn't know anything about this dish or 2. They're using a really thick steak which I like. Turned out it was the first. I ordered it medium and it came out well... which is okay because well is what I expected. Thank God I didn't ask for a well done steak. The steak was ehh. It was just bland and the veggies on top lacked flavor (which is weird because they were real... or were they?). I ended up only finishing the beans and hashbrowns. Normally when I'm forced to go to any VI I just stick with that pick six or whatever the hell it is and basically just make my own skillet. My recipe follows. Waited an hour for our food and then ended up getting overcharged because the waiters/waitresses don't know how to take orders. We had a party of six and we saw a bunch of other tables getting their food and drinks before us even though they were seated way after us. Our waitresses were also not consistent as well. One minute we have one lady, then another minute we have someone else, and then even the manager was involved. All we wanted was a nice Father's Day but it ended up being just a stressful experience. This pie was an exception it was not good at all of which I preceded ti return to the store the following day to return. I was informed by the Manager-Christian that he was new to the position and that he did not know how to give a refund. He informed me I needed to return the following day and speak to Danielle -General Manager. I asked for the last name of which he did not know the last name. (Hummm) What an inconvenience to return a pie that was not fit for consumption and the only solution provided was to "come back tomorrow". How does one become a manager without proper training? My family and I met for a meal at Village Inn . As we ordered I asked the waiter to make sure and give me the check. When we finished eating and the waiter brought the check he gave it to my nephew who was the only man in the group. I was confused and asked what had just happened. I get to come to this Village Inn at least once a week, sometimes twice a week for work. There's been mostly good days here. I try to order different things but sometimes stick with the same foods I like. One of my favorites to order is the cobb salad. It usually has a good flavor and fresh ingredients. I really like the taste of the grilled chicken, blue cheese, bacon and avocado the most. The bits of crumbled cheese and hard boiled eggs also make it tasty. I like to load the salad with Ranch dressing. The salad is $9 and change. Something else I like to order is the 2-2-2 breakfast. This includes an egg (I order mine scrambled), bacon or sausage and three pancakes or slices of toast. I get the pancakes and bacon. It's $6 and change. The other day I felt like trying something different. I went with the strawberry crepes combo and it wasn't bad! It had glazed strawberries and whipped cream. The combo also comes with hash browns and your choice of two slices of sausage or bacon. I always take the bacon. It was around $10. The number one thing Village Inn is known for is their pies. All of the ones I've tried so far are delicious. I like the peach and brownie sundae pies the most. The brownie sundae pie includes nuts inside of it and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. They usually offer seasonal pies. A pie is around $10-11. A slice of pie is $5-6, sometimes less (if I remember correctly). I recommend this Village Inn. FYI, for whatever reason it's super packed on Wednesdays around 10:30-1 p.m. They used to offer free slices of pie with a meal on Wednesdays but not anymore. Ate at the Mesa and balboa location last week, where I added $4.70 to my $25.30 bill to total a nice round $30.00. When I got my credit card bill, the total had ballooned to $33.40. This is a Southwest standard and every VI has its own ups and downs. In general though, you get comfy seating, decent prices, adequate (more about that coming) service and pretty reliable food options from a decently diverse menu. Breakfast and sandwiches are safe bets in any diner style restaurant, and VI is no exception. The portion sizes (in typical American fashion) are more than sufficient on almost every item and the chefs have never really failed me. This is a frequent dining choice for me and work colleagues for casual meetings and planning sessions. The endless coffee (totally decent if not really good) is a huge plus when you are going to be there for 2+ hours. I don't recommend "camping out" at any restaurant unless you compensate your server well, so don't be one of "those" customers please! Pies are usually quite good and rotate a few new options through the calendar year. Some (candy cane in particular) are cloyingly sweet and impossible to enjoy, but others are excellent. Hot apple pie with a sprinkle of shredded cheese (yes, it's a real thing) and lemon supreme when (cold) blueberry compote are delicious choices to augment they regular selections. Service is variable since some diners in El Paso don't tip appropriately. Young waiters learning the craft aren't perfect, but diner service rarely is. Though can flag down any staff member if you have an urgent need, but your server will eventually make it back to your table. Be patient if you go during a rush. I love going with a big group of friends (one time we even brought a board game to play on the table while we ate). I enjoy meeting up with someone one on one and having a long chat, catching up on life as we share a slice of pie. I've also enjoyed going alone and making the most of the complimentary wifi and free coffee refills. It can truly suit all needs and settings. I recommend the build your breakfast option where you get to choose a bit of everything. (As previously referenced, I'm not very good at decisions). This Village Inn is a skip away from home, my Mother loves when I take her there, and so, we have been here twice this week. BOTH times they have served ROTTEN coleslaw. Honestly --ROTTEN. To where you can see the glaze of sourness. YELLOW COLESLAW. But here is the kicker: They applied FRESH coleslaw on top to disguise it the second time... . I was floored!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ripped into the GM and now will stomp on the Corp office this week. Please be careful if you decide to eat here and inspect what you consume to be on the safe side.
