I just want the owners to know the girl with the blond hair working here this morning 7/21 is hurting your business not helping it at all. I had an older lady in front of me get 2 pieces of the quiche and asked for them to be light in color because she wanted to heat them up at home. The blonde girl rolled her eyes at her. I thought wow that was rude but maybe the younger girl was having a bad day but still no reason to take it out on this older lady. I also thought I'm going to see my friend and mushroom onion quiche sounds delicious. I decided to get 2 slices of it. I asked her to please warm it up. After it was done warming up I watched her try to pull it out of the over and saw her ripping it apart and then shrugging her arms like whatever. Then she handed it to me like she had not just done that. I went out to the car looked at it and brought it right back in and told her you know the crust is all ripped off these and she told me yea that's what happens when you heat up quiche. No, that definitely is what happens when you are obviously aggravated about something else and take your aggression out on my quiche and then just shrugged your shoulders and hand it to me anyways. I even had tipped this chick because I always tip and that really makes me mad. Another very kind girl came out from the back with brown hair and refunded me my money and apologized. I don't want to come back in here now sadly because of the blond girls attitude. I had a chocolate croissant, which was excellent. Do not, however, order chocolate milk. They have milk, but they do not have chocolate. The pastries I got here were so delicious, especially the special which was a muscadine bialy! The ambiance is adorable and has a decent amount of seating both inside and outside. I was excited to see they had for sourdough baked goods, and the political messaging was great and positive and the shop had a beautiful environment. However, these are not croissants. There is no lamination (or destroyed to the point of unrecognizablility) the savory pastries were cloyingly sweet, flat and dense and had a yeast flavor that overwhelmed the butter. The almond croissant was not filled with frangipane but had it added in a folding process maybe? A break from traditional that did not work at all. Again, a dense bread roll that I cannot in good conscience call a croissant. An interesting culinary experience... one I would not pay (5$ each?!?) to try again. Currently keeping us all safe, Vine has great COVID procedures, requiring masks, cutting down the number of guests in the shop and there's always sanitizer and masks available at the door! My personal fave? The hugeee Cinnamon Rolls that are bigger than my own little hands! Always soft, sweet, crunchy with glazed over sugar, the perfect treat with my morning coffee in the office! The desserts--5 stars. I had the guava and cream cheese croissant and the chocolate chip cookie. Both of which were baked today. They were so good and not overly sweet. The only downside to the desserts that they offer is that some of the desert aren't baked daily. I really want to come back and try the bread put in which I'm told is generally on Thursdays. The environment--2 stars. I hate to say it, but this place is not very clean. Although they do a good job of making available masks and hand sanitizer I was a bit disturbed by the lack of cleanliness both in the front of the house and the back of the house. It looks like the place had not been swept or mopped in weeks. They have outside seating which is great amid covid but the exterior is a bit run down. 3.5 stars. I have stopped in periodically since 2014. I come for the Cranberry Scones & Cranberry Walnut Bread. I truly enjoy both. Due to the baked goods using organic ingredients, they are; however, more expensive & they mold much faster than their processed counterparts. For me, though, those two offerings have earned FIVE STARS. (FYI: The patron favorite is the Sourdough loaf.) The bakery offers breads (sliced or whole loaf), scones, cinnamon rolls, croissants, muffins, cookies, pastries, bread pudding, pies, quiche, pressed sandwiches, pizza, soups, beer, wine, coffee, bottled beverages, & possibly much more. Lunch is available 11 AM to 2 PM. There are tables & counter seats inside along w/ children's games. I have never walked in & been greeted by ANY customer over the last 7 years. Often, patrons study near the windows. Should a canine accompany you, there are outside tables w/ umbrellas facing Main Street. Dine-in, Delivery, Takeout, & Curbside Service are available. There are some less-than-positive aspects of this business that SHOULD BE ADDRESSED by co-owners Theresa & Dean (although on the business page the bakery is described by the owners as a "woman-owned business." Technically, that would make almost every family business "woman-owned.") (1) As the cousin of a woman violently murdered, & after 20 years of teaching mainly poor black youth, being greeted by a sign that equates prisons to "slavery" is rather insulting. And as a taxpayer & someone who has worked w/ the poorest of youth, posting signs in support of disbanding Ice (@ the expense of that proposed action on the tax-paying working poor & middle class especially), is insulting. I WANT TO EAT GOOD FOOD, NOT BE GREETED BY POLITICAL FOOLISHNESS (or politics of ANY kind) before I've even stepped inside the door. (2) Only once in dozens of visits has staff been friendly. Only once! Management is responsible for training staff & fostering a welcoming environment. It has consistently failed in this area. Staff comes across as cold. I equate cold w/ arrogance or displeasure w/ one's job. (3) The floor-to-ceiling wall board is great, but it's often not updated. There's never been a time when all the baked goods listed on the board were available in the cases, which creates disappointment. (4) Often, regardless of the time I've stopped in, the bakery cases were very low in products. (5) There's a fee for using plastic, a fee that should be readily visible/posted in two or more places. Perhaps a posting could join the front window beside the political signs:) There also should be no mention of a cash discount. When one charges a fee for plastic, that does not save money for the patron paying w/ cash. (6) The Vine loaves sold at Ward's Supermarket are priced the same as the ones here @ the bakery. Why that is the case is confusing since there is no middle man; one would think the loaves here @ the bakery would be less expensive. I will continue to roll my eyes at the front window as long as Vine's owners are comfortable turning what should be a simple, relaxing dining experience into a political one, but I'll also continue to stop in for my two usual baked goods whenever I'm in town. They definitely know how to make quality scones & bread. WEAR A MASK HERE. There will be NO SERVICE without one even as we near the start of November 2021. The policy doesn't follow the science, but it is required. The star count was NOT lowered due to this; I covered above the reasons for my review & I covered my vaccinated self w/ a pretty chiffon mask that makes others feel safe. read more

This place was a god send for my family and I while my sister was in post op. at Shands. They use Central Milling flour, organic veggies whenever possible (which I'm certain is always) and everything we had was delicious. Hospital food is awful and to help my sister in recovery, we bought the Old 85 loaf for her to eat with bone broth. After she was able to eat more solid foods, she requested a soup, a quiche, and more bread. My family and I enjoyed the ham and cheese, guava and cheese, and almond croissant for breakfast and a pizza, pesto and beet sandwich for lunch. Everything was delicious! We were so happy to have good food while staying in the hospital. Not to mention that it's only two miles from the medical campus. Pastries are available upon opening and are restocked throughout the day as they make more. Lunch begins at 11:00 am and lasts until 2:00 pm. We'll be sure to stop and support Vine whenever we are back in Gainesville. read more

I am well aware that "no one eats bread any more" (to quote a wise Southern California woman), for this is not the 1900's and we no longer eat such fattening things. But when we DO eat them, we prefer they be loaves from Vine Sourdough Bakery of Gainesville. The loaf of theirs I bought from Ward's Supermarket was so excellent and so fresh, that I feel certain its wheat-grains had just been plucked from the vines on which they no doubt grew. Other closeted bread-lovers will well understand when I tell them that Vine Sourdough Bakery's bread had a crust that was just the right hardness, and an interior with just the right softness. There was absolutely nothing to improve upon in that loaf's slices, other than by providing the butter they needed on top. Commendable work, Vine Sourdough Bakery! Didn't get a chance to try much but their fig jam and cream cheese croissant was great! Perfect balance between sweet and savory. Ok so let me get the main review out of the way first: The Vine has tasty, fresh baked goods, a good atmosphere, is conveniently located near my house, and decent coffee. I like coming here and would encourage others to also visit here. Here's my only complaint, and it shouldn't be a big deal but I can't seem to get over it: you can't charge people an extra 5% when they use a credit card, and then say it's a "5% cash discount". Just call it what it is, a 5% charge. If you would just include it in the price of all goods, no one would notice. It just rubs me the wrong way when I pull out my card to pay and your employees say "one moment" and add an extra 50c to my bill without telling me why and then immediately swiping my card. read more

This is such a cute little local bakery. I visited for the first time today to get some bread because I heard they fermented theirs. The owner, Theresa was so informative and explained all the varieties to me and was so helpful. Their loaves are made from unbleached, organic flour and the fermentation process add even more to the health benefits. I bought the whole wheat and it was delicious. I'll definitely be back! After having a bad experience last year I said I would not return, fortunately, I changed my mind. In recent times, I have been checking out Vine's goods at the downtown farmers market on Wednesdays and things have been great. The people have been friendly and the breads and baked goods have been tasty. I have stopped in the shop a couple times as well and those visits too have been good experiences. My most recent visit was to purchase treats for my co-workers and they thoroughly enjoyed them! One person out of the bunch had a few questions about ingredients. Just popped into Vine for what seems at this point like a speakeasy-style Sunday brunch. It was mostly quiet - even the bread was hiding - but the food was superb! Vine never under-achieves: their breads are rustic and hearty, their pasta fresh and flavorful, and the wine tasting dinner I attended there was so generous (re: tons of excellent breads, spreads, pastries, and wine) that I keep thinking if anything, they are under-stating themselves. Today, the single-page menu gave us 4 entree options: pepper and fontina quiche, tempeh scramble, rosemary toast with poached eggs, or brioche french toast. With those four options you get two choose two of four sides: yogurt parfait, zucchini bread, quinoa salad, or eggplant croquettes. Then you also get a lovely salad, in addition to what all you choose. Plenty of food, plenty of combos of choices. I splurged and had a beet-apple-mint juice with fresh mint ice cubes. I also ate everything on my plate! It was so satisfying. Highlights: the quinoa salad had a seasoned tahini dressing on it that was out of this world and the maple granola on the parfait was deliciously toasty and homemade! The gluten free almond drops are great, only 50 cents. Though we thought the sandwiches were mediocre for the price.
