Following a visit to the sprawling UF campus, my wife and I decided to try out The Spot for lunch. Located in a building housing other eateries and with limited "free" parking, we parked in the parking structure in the same building. As it was summer break, a lot of the other businesses in the building were closed (Vietnamese and Italian restaurant as well as a boba place). The place looks like it was being run by a hardworking couple. We checked out the menu and my wife ordered the Gyro Platter and I ordered the Souvlaki Platter. We also ordered a couple of fountain drinks. The gyro meat was well seasoned and tender. The Greek salad was quite good. The chicken souvlaki, however, seemed to lack flavor and a bit dry. Portions were quite generous and the value was there. We actually packed our leftovers for some quesadillas later. If we do go back, I would order the gyro instead of the chicken souvlaki. I hate to leave bad reviews, but I think want to be honest. I came to The Spot recently for lunch and was not happy with my experience. Located in midtown, this appears to a fast casual place that caters towards college students. They serve "Greek" street food, salads, quesadillas, burgers, and more. The food is relatively inexpensive. Service is fine, actually the people working there are friendly. Food is made to order and comes out quickly. There is some seating available inside (it's limited) but there are plenty of tables in the hall. I ordered the Street Chicken Souvlaki which included grilled chicken with tomato, onion, fries inside a pita, topped with ketchup and mustard. This was a very large portion. The pita was good, but pretty much fell apart the second I picked it up. While I liked the chicken, it was over seasoned and I didn't care for the "sauced" quality of it. I'm not sure if they marinated it or tossed it in some sauce, but it was too much. The fries were decent, but not super crispy. I felt that they were not necessarily and a little over-the-top. The tomato was fresh and but the red onion slices were very thick. The mustard and ketchup didn't work with the seasonings on the chicken. The dish was just all over the place and I couldn't even finish half of it before I started feeling sick. I ordered a side of onion rings as well. This was a large order and the size was great. But these onion rings were over-battered and were fresh, but not crispy at all. I bit into one and ended up pulling out the whole onion rings. Not good. Overall, I was very disappointed with my experience. The food was so heavy and overly salted I couldn't even eat half of it. I ended up giving it to a homeless person on the way out. The food left my stomach in shambles the rest of the day. Service is fine. But the food is not desirable. It is safe to say I will not be returning, which is unfortunate. read more

Visit after visit, year after year, this place is still the best Greek spot in town. Also up there for best lunch spot, period. I got my usual gyro platter; about $15. Sounds pricey but my wife and I spit it and still had some leftovers. Also, this might seem a bit off topic but this place has some of the best fries. Great seasoning. My platter came with a generous portion of gyro meat, and the side salad was nicely prepared. If you haven't tried this place and you like a good gyro, drop by, you won't be disappointed. read more

The Spot is definitely a great lunch time restaurant that just hits the spot! I ordered one of the gyro platters which came with a Greek salad, fries, and pita bread. The woman who took my order was very nice and made my food with care. It was piping hot and fresh. The Greek salad was fresh and I really liked their Greek dressing. The gyro meat was a bit salty, so the tzatziki sauce definitely compliments the gyro. The pita bread was fresh and soft. The fries were seasoned very well. Overall the platter was pretty hefty and reasonably priced. The parking is a bit tricky here especially during the week when classes are in session. Small family owned Greek / Mediterranean "spot" right in the heart of Midtown, across from UF. Order at the counter and they'll bring to the food to your table. Ive been here twice and both times, the foods been great. Gyros and sandwiches are big and they are the best in the area. They also have burgers, salads and quesadillas. The portions are generous and the food is really good! The prices are great and the service is fast! There is one table inside the spot but other tables in the hallway. There is a bubble tea spot and Vietnamese food spot in the food hall as well. Restrooms are at the end of the hallway for the public. read more

One of the best Gyro's i've had and it definitely takes the cake for any in Gainesville. The place is pretty unsuspecting for how good the food is. The gyro was ~$10 after tax and tip which is pretty on par with other places. They were slammed as it was after a football game but orders still came out very quickly. The gyro was hot with the pita bread being cooked amazingly. The meat wasn't overcooked like many of the others i've had and the veggies all tasted fresh alongside the tzatziki sauce. I'm a sucker for a good gyro, so on a recent trip to Gainesville to visit the museum we were looking for a spot for lunch. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately!), a lot of spots are closed on Sunday. Then we saw, "best gyro in Gainesville," and we knew this was the place for us. There were 9 of us, so that size is hard to please sometimes, especially since kids and teens were involved, but I must say, everyone left satisfied. The Spot is in a small shopping court. There is an Asian, potato (not open on Sunday), tea restaurants in there as well. Seating is available in the main area they are all connected to. Tables are small, so for us we had to spread out, but that's fine. I ordered the Gyro and opted for fries and a drink to go with. The pita was warm, tender, and perfect. The gyro meat was so flavorful, with a few pieces with a crispy edge (I like this, my daughter not so much). Tzatziki sauce was amazing, with a hint of tartness and not too thin that it dripped off your piti wrap. Served with fresh tomatoes and lettuce - I loved it. Fries needed salt, in my opinion, but I'm a salt lover, so there's that. Drinks are self-serve. Couple of our group got their hamburger and raved about them. Greek salad looked standard, rather plain to me, but again, that's me! It was fresh and the dressing was good according to those who ordered it. Restaurant is following safety guidelines, is very clean, and staff was quite nice accommodating all of our orders and multiple tickets for the group. If you like gyros, this is the place to go. Parking was a little difficult, even on a Sunday, but it was a beautiful day so having to walk a couple of blocks was not a problem. read more

Well the product is pretty decent here and surprisingly so, and it's right next to my favourite bubble tea place in Gainesville, but I guess the downside is that the service isn't too amazing and it's not the cheapest Gyro in the world. I was driving from Florida to Tennessee and although this restaurant is 12 minutes from the actual highway we deviated ourselves just to come here. One of my favorite types of food is mediterranean/greek, so I had to try this place out! Of course it did not fail!! I got the gyro platter which was SO much food, in a good way of course. Was visiting the museum in Gainesville and decided to try this little "Spot". I had heard that the gyro was really good but decided to go with the platter so that I could also get the salad as I absolutely love a Greek salad. That was a mistake. Other member of my party had the gyro and were thrilled. My platter? Not so much. Everything was really good - except the gyro meat! It was cooked to a crisp! I do NOT prefer my gyro meat to be crunchy. Other than that, the rest of the food was really good. The people there were really nice. My kid accidentally threw out my box with a piece of baklava in it and they were kind enough to replace it at no charge even though I was willing to pay. That baklava was really good too! read more

A family business run with care and love--and skill. The menu combines both Greek and American standards, catering to hungry UF students with gyros and other simple, hearty, fare that will win hearts and fill tummies. What has impressed me though is the ample portions and also the freshness of everything. The Greek salads are very, very, fresh without a single leaf of lettuce being substandard, and that would be a remarkable feat to find even in a high-end fine dining restaurant--it's nearly unheard of for places that pride themselves on speed and simplicity. However, it is indeed the case here: everything on two visits and three different dishes tasted remarkably fresh. And they know how to cook. The gyro meat (lamb) was quite good, the salad perfect, and the fries alright though Gyro Plus down the avenue has them beat on fries still. Their baklava is ok but the serving too large and the way they make it somehow makes it a little less than as delicate as it ought to be, really. I'm picky though, and I wish they had a more extensive selection of Greek food than the same standards you find everywhere. Plus, the owner is Albanian (she couldn't really not admit that to me since I write for a Serbian and a Croatian news service and thus realized at once she wasn't Greek) so it would be cool if they added some Albanian and other regional dishes to the menu. It's not like it's a purely traditional Greek restaurant anyways with the American sandwiches on the menu. Yet these are mere quibbles: overall, very good, very fresh food served with laughter and warmth. You could do much worse for lunch, and besides they often have soccer on their TV which is a bonus to me. read more

HOLY GYRO! I have hit the jackpot on Greek food and I can't believe it has taken me this long to find The Spot! I went for lunch with a colleague and we were both so impressed and enjoyed our food that I would 1000% go back. The Spot is located in a pretty obscure and small area off University Ave in the larger building that is also a parking garage and condos. The Spot is small an is counter service but they have open seating in the breezeway they share with other businesses and restaurants. The woman taking orders was extremely nice and told us this is a family owned business and they close for Summer A to travel to Albania. Since I had not been before I asked her what she recommended and I'm glad I did. She said the platters were hearty portions of food and I was not super hungry so I went with her suggestion of a gyro with fries. My colleague is vegetarian so she was able to get the veggie gyro. We both LOVED it. The tzatziki sauce for our gyros were fresh and delicious. The gyro was huge and I need to eat a little bit of it with a fork before just picking up that bad boy. The pita was light and fluffy and literally melted in your mouth. The fries were REALLY good and I didn't expect that. For the amount of food I got the prices was a STEAL. I could not recommend this place any more. The only downside is the parking situation. Coming here for lunch while at work at UF was an easy walk. I'm not sure if it would be so easy to come here driving? I haven't tried yet but I definitely will after yesterdays visit! read more

To be fair, if I'd only ordered a Gyro, the rating would have been MUCH higher! But I ordered the Gyro Platter which includes fries + Greek salad. On my visit, there was NOT a HEALTHY option for beverages (NO fresh brewed iced tea w/lemon) that EXCLUDED CORN SYRUP SWEETENERS! (I compromised w/ Fountain Ginger Ale.) On a positive note, the portions for the Platter where huge. But the letdown was that the fries were UNDERCOOKED, spiced with seemed to be rosemary that were NEVER described for the item ANYWHERE on the menu. The Greek Salad received consisted of: 2 calamata olives, 2 pieces (NOT an ENTIRE slice) of an onion slice, a quartered slice of tomato. Approx. 10 chopped mini cubes of Feta cheese on a single-grilled, quartered Pita. Tzatziki sauce. My Gyro was SPECTACULAR! The meat was plentiful, but was the best-seasoned meat that was also moist, but also crispy too with that crust making it a PERFECT bite you want! My first time going to this place and I was not disappointed! It's nothing fancy you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you on paper plates with disposable utensils but, I think that's why I loved it even more. It gave the food a more authentic feel. We got our food within 10 min and man was it A LOT! I got the gyro platter for $9 and that comes with pita bread, fries, gyro, and a salad. I could only eat about half of it so I'll have the leftovers for dinner. The food was delicious, very fresh and flavorful. Whatever seasoning they use on the fries, I need some in a bottle ASAP! So good! The location is great right across from UF and parking was easy to find since it's the weekend might be a little harder during the week.
