I am Korean-American and have been going to VIP Restaurant in Anchorage for over 20 years. I grew up in Los Angeles, and VIP Restaurant has similar flavors and quality to the food I had at LA restaurants. I have tried numerous Anchorage Korean restaurants, and I find myself comparing all of them to VIP Restaurant as I have yet to find a Korean restaurant that exceeds VIP's quality and flavors. For example, the bibimbap is amazing, the dduk gook is fantastic, and the extensive banchan is awesome. I'm completely mystified as to why their ratings are so low and had to weigh in. Easy to get in and get a table right away. This restaurant is clean but the booths are very uncomfortable. As soon as you sit down, you goe a menu and some delicious hot tea. All the sides come along free with your meal. I normally order the spicy pork which is a 10/10 amazing, juicy, spicy, and oniony. The house fried rice also hit the spot. I've been to VIP in the past - and the food was good. My favorite was the dtuk boki - I think that's how you spell it. It was spicy, a little sweet and loved the textures. Afterwards, we had the galbitang and fried rice. The galbitang was alright - I am used a deeper flavor in the soup - this was a little bland. The banchan was great though the variety was wonderful - but it was light when it came to our portions. I'm sad to say the service was not the best. The person that was working there was fast, but came across unfriendly. The place itself was clean and had an old school vibe to it. I would say if you like Korean food and need a fix - this might do the job. read more

The lady owner is extremely rude and doesn't seem to know how to serve her guests. She throws plates on the table rudely and when asked for water or other items, she doesn't even acknowledge and takes a long time. Still one of our favorite spots . So much so they know us & our order. My favorite is still the Galbi dinner portion. VIP is a very busy spot. A favorite of many locals. It's not a huge spot, small & cozy. On a busy night you might have to wait for a table but will be worth it. Never a disappointing visit, always good & on point. Went here based on a recommendation from my wife's coworker. They did NOT disappoint. The tteokbokki was savory and flavorful. The crab stew was packed with portions of blue crab and the broth was phenomenal. The short ribs in their galbitang fell off of the bone and were so soft that you could use your spoon to cut through it. In my opinion, their galbitang was hands-down the best I've had (lived in a Korea for a year and had plenty). Every single one of their banchan were packed with flavor. Service was straightforward and they left you alone unless you needed something. This place prioritizes the quality of the food over its ambiance and in my opinion, that is what makes this restaurant stand out. Ignore every single negative review of this place because it blows places like Wonjo out of the water as far as flavor, portions, prices, and quality are concerned. I have to echo Cara's thoughts and just say that this business is absolutely KILLING it on the delivery apps! They are, BY FAR, the best at food delivery. Amazing lunch prices, turbo-charged delivery speed, amazing prep, huge portions, and delicious food. When I hit the "order" button on Door Dash, I often cringe thinking about how long it will take or if it will be cancelled...who knows. EXCEPT with VIP. They are doing it right. Took the folks here for lunch this past weekend..I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. We came here because this is my moms favorite restaurant. It's located in the valhalla center next to Bombay delux restaurant off of northern lights blvd. Be prepared to turn into this location because it comes up quick and could easily be missed. The restaurant itself is quite quaint. We went during a busy lunch rush but were able to snag a decent table for the four of us. The service staff was busy. Pretty busy that it took a good amount of wait time for service and food. I am sure that it's much better during slower service, though when we went..I wasn't very impressed. I kind of felt like us being there was more of a burden, like "oh great..another table to serve". Whatever, got over it. Food was good..I ordered the bibimbab and it was good. My parents ordered the bulgogi chicken, spicy stir fried shrimp w/ vegetables and the shrimp fried rice. Food overall was good..the soup that's served is tasty and the many sides are awesome. They serve good Korean food. Yeah service wasn't the best..but I get it..I'll try this place again for dinner on a weekday and hopefully get better service then. First things first. For reasons of context I will disclose that I have only been to a Korean sit down restaurant three times. First experience Tacoma Washington in 2017. My Korean coworker took me to a place that I was the only Caucasian in the place. There was no English spoken or written. I did not order. The table food was AMAZING!!! Second Korean Gardens in Anchorage 2/5/2022. Review coming after this one. Third happened to be today. Dinner with my son, who has never had Korean food and whom I haven't seen in months. Dinner was set for 5pm. I got there first with only 2 tables occupied. Greeted and offered a nice table with hot tea immediately. Generous menu selection. We opened with steamed pork dumplings. Served hot. Lacked some pork flavor, though had good texture. I decided on spicy Korean seafood stew as I wanted to compare it to what Korean gardens gave me this past Saturday. Received it bubblin hot. A greater selection and quantity of seafood to include squid, shrimp tails, baby bay scallops, and what appeared to be canned clams. Overall tasty though didn't seem as fresh as possible. My son had spicy Bibimbap. The rice had great flavor and texture. Great quantity. Overall a solid dish. The Banchan where numerous and served with the mains. Good selection. Overall they lacked flavor. The fried tofu was stale. Potato where rock hard. Not impressive. I will give this another shot if I come through that part of town and update my review then. read more

It started with the tea. Hot, tasty, complimentary tea on a cold day when snow was just starting to fly. The waitress came to take our order promptly. And then nothing until our food came out. The place was really busy and she was serving the whole place by herself. She was killing it. In my experience, korean side dishes come out as a sort of appetizer. This was confirmed when the table across from us received their side dishes just minutes after ordering. For some reason we didn't receive our dishes until our meals came. But that was okay because the sides dishes were some of the best I have ever had! There were ten dishes. I especially enjoyed their kimchi. Very fresh! The fish cakes and broccoli were super tasty too The bibimbap came out in a super hot clay pot. I let the rice on the button just roast and it became the perfect bit of crunchy. The food here is fantastic, in particular the dweji bulgogi. The selection of banchan that is served can't be beat. The pricing is a little high but honestly, for the size of the portions, I would argue that the pricing is reflective of how much food you're getting. I can often get two to three meals out of one entree, and for 20-24 dollars, I feel like that isn't bad. The atmosphere is nice, it's usually nice and quiet, and the booths provide a nice sense of privacy while you eat. The service is where things falter a little. We have found that it can take a while to flag someone down, and that they don't often just come by to check up/refill waters, things like that. We waited probably 20 minutes just to be able to flag someone down for the check at the end of our meal. I would say honestly, the food is worth it, but it is something I would want to make others mindful of. read more

I usually get the beef bulgogi nothing else only that it is marinated and delicious I would come back and I recommend this restaurant Service: 3 stars ( i wish I could give it a boost but this is my honest opinion) The lady that serves you or takes orders is like grouchy and I give it a 3 star sometimes there is other people helping but it's usually her. I loved VIP however, Went there yesterday for lunch.. got seated however we waited for 10 minutes for menu and it never came, so I grabbed some menus for us.. 20 minutes had gone by still no server.. never gave us water, menu, or asked for our order after 20 minutes.. We ended up walking out and I recommend going to tofu house, korea garden, or hometown for home made Korean food and will probably give you better service :-) read more

I was invited for a birthday lunch with my son and grandson. I have never been here before, I've driven past it 1 million times but have never given her second look. The menu was not overwhelming, I decided to focus on the Korean since it is billed as a Korean restaurant. I went with the seafood combo in spicy sauce. I was truly impressed. The dish came out hot and fast. We were offered maybe 10 small plates with various sides and a bowl of rice. The sauce was a wonderfully rich, lower end of spicy, Dark red chili sauce. There are plenty of vegetables along with shrimp, octopus, squid, and scallops. This is the first time in my life I have had such a dish but I will say that I cannot imagine it being prepared any better. It was fantastic. The facility was a little bit outdated, perhaps a little bit tired looking, it looked clean. I did not venture to the restroom on this trip. The service in the venue both seemed plenty adequate. So I took these photos at 8:13pm (time stamped) because I was really confused on why this lady told me the restaurant is closed. I was really craving one of my favorite Korean restaurants in town and when I walked in, there were 3 tables and at least 2 haven't had their food yet. The server looked at me but continued what she was doing. About 3-5 mins later she says "sorry we're closed" I said excuse me? It says you're open till 9:30. And she couldn't explain to me why she was closed. I don't know if I'm just hangry, but that really pissed me off to the point where I don't want to go back. Please be cautious with their hours. I wasn't impressed with this place my first time around but they were the only Korean restaurant open during the shutdown that was close by and so took another chance and was really happy I did. Love their spicy octopus. Everything else we ordered, spicy bulgogi and naengmyeon, were tasty as well as their banchan. There was one server working during a busy lunch hour, so the "VIP" is misleading. We were served our food and then left alone. I had to asked for my check or we would have waited there all day. We ordered the beef bulgogi and jap chae. The bulgogi was dry and had to put soy sauce on the rice. The jap chae was just ok. I think the portion is a bit small or maybe they have to balance the cost of the garnish served in tiny plates. I say get rid of the garnish and increase the portion. I have to knock a star off for the service, it can very much improve. The food is consistently delicious & authentic, though their kimchi isn't my favorite. Don't come in here expecting big fake smiles and "ma'am"s and "sir"s. Come in for authentic korean food. I could be biased since I don't consider any ethnic cuisine authentic unless the server lady has an attitude or there's a 100 year old grandma with glaucoma peeling garlic in the corner. I got their tofu soup here. Not really my favorite. Hometown's soup has a better flavor. However, their bimbim cold noodle was pretty tasty. good sauce and toppings. I do wish the noodle is less "stuck" together. I did get the food as takeout. So maybe that changed the texture of the food a bit. I might come back for the Korean BBQ stuff next time. The server is not nice! I asked for a tea, she said nothing. She brought the tea with the foods, I said "thank you", she said nothing. I asked for a fork, AGAIN she said nothing but she brought the fork to the table. NOT FRIENDLY AND NOT PLEASANT.
