Honestly, I couldn't have been much more disappointed. Viagro came highly recommended by local friends, so we chose it for the birthday dinner on our girls trip. We made a reservation, arrived early/on time, and still had to wait past it. The birthday girl's husband had even called ahead and PREPAID for two bottles of her favorite sake, a birthday dessert for the table, and a separate dessert for her. You'd think a group with a reservation and prepaid items would be set up for a smooth celebration. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We were seated in a private room with one server. He brought out the birthday girl's favorite sake and immediately said, "Enjoy it because it's the last bottle." Weird way to start, but okay. Three of us ordered lychee martinis. He came back saying they were out of the lychee sake, but offered to have the bartender make something similar. We appreciated the effort, tried one first, liked it, and ordered the rest of the round. Then everything unraveled. Our reservation specifically noted two dietary restrictions: one friend is vegetarian (NOT vegan), and another has a pistachio allergy. We ordered pork baos, avocado baos, spicy garlic edamame, and cauliflower. The edamame wasn't spicy and had almost no flavor. The cauliflower looked NOTHING like the photos online--it was basically steamed cauliflower with soy sauce. When we asked why, the server casually told us there might be pistachios in the peanut sauce used on the vegetable appetizers, so they just removed all the sauces without telling us. Wait...WHAT? No warning while ordering. No explanation. No suggestion to choose something else. If there was concern about a pistachio allergy, why was my friend served the dish at all? We paid premium prices for plain steamed vegetables. The server brought out powdered peanut topping afterward, and I asked for chili crunch to try to save the dishes. It didn't help, and he never offered to remake or replace them. Then we were told there were no avocado baos because they were out of avocado...on a Friday night...at a restaurant where avocado is on what feels like half the menu. We asked if they could substitute mushrooms, tofu, or literally anything vegetarian since there are only two vegetarian entrées on the menu. After disappearing for about ten minutes, the server came back saying he'd "convinced" the chef to make them because the chef wanted to save avocado for the rest of the night. Gee...thanks? The baos finally arrived...still without the sauce they were supposed to come with. Fresh? Sure. Flavorful? Not even close. The pork baos were the only appetizer that lived up to expectations. The birthday girl and I ordered the $65 omakase tour, which was fresh and very good. The sushi our friends ordered was also excellent. Unfortunately, our vegetarian friend's mushroom fried rice was another miss. The server removed the eggs without asking, assuming she was vegan. We had to explain she was vegetarian and ask for the eggs to be put back in. Even then, the dish was bland enough that she had to drown it in soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi. When our food arrived, two friends ordered another lychee martini. It tasted COMPLETELY different from the first round--super sour instead of sweet. By then we'd all just given up because was ruined. Then came the most unbelievable part. The server looked at the empty sake bottle and asked, "Would you like another bottle?" We almost fell out of our chairs. He had started the night telling us that bottle was the last one...yet now he was offering us another. On top of that, BOTH bottles had already been prepaid by the birthday girl's husband. It shouldn't have even been a question--it should have simply been brought to the table. At that point, we just wanted the check. My friend paid through the QR code and--despite everything--still tipped 20%. We declined dessert because we wanted to leave. The server replied, "We're bringing one anyway," and dropped the birthday dessert off while part of our group was in the restroom. I served for 15 years, and I would NEVER bring out a birthday dessert before the entire party was present. We ended up singing Happy Birthday with friends missing from the table. Then the dessert was on the bill, preventing us from closing. While fixing that, we discovered WE'D been charged for the prepaid sake bottle, so we had to make sure the birthday girl's husband was refunded. What shocked me most was the manager's response...or lack thereof. No apology. No questions or concern. My friends aren't confrontational, so they just wanted to leave. What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a huge disappointment. The bright spots were overshadowed by poor communication, stock issues, incorrect assumptions about dietary restrictions, inconsistent drinks, billing mistakes, and disorganized service from beginning to end. The dinner was unforgettable, unfortunately for all the WRONG reasons.
I have mixed reviews for this one. Negative: half of our parties food never came out. We ordered around 7pm and by 8 pm half of the parties food came out and by 9pm we were still missing 3 rolls of sushi for 2 people. The staff stated there was a mixup in the kitchen and kept checking on our food for an hour saying it was being prepared.. for an hour? Our bill was also incorrect we were over charged for drinks. The wait really put a damper on the mood as we were starving! The waiter also seemed very busy and went MIA for a bit. They might need more staffing on Mondays given the Happy Hour all day. Positive: The spicy edamame were VERY yummy. The bao buns were also delicious. We went on a Monday and it was half price rolls and drinks! The complementary valet parking is such a win! After speaking to the manager about the wait issue we were given gift cards to try the restaurant again which I appreciated! The ambiance is a red moody room which is a fun vibe. Our waiter knew everything on the menu and was a great help with ordering. Overall if we didn't have the kitchen and staff issue I think our experience would have been a lot better! Happy to try it again and update the review!
Went on a Friday night. Had a reservation and we were sat promptly. Incredible service throughout the night. Nice & informative staff. The drinks were great. All the food was awesome too. The lighting is the main restaurant and bathroom is pretty dim.
Came here on a Monday for the discounted deal with friends. The interior is superrr cool, I love the dark lighting and the table set up inside. Service was nice and reasonable pace for how busy it was (very!!). The drinks were great ($14 for 2), I had the Tokyo sangria which was great and sweet. The yuzu sour was much stronger but still tasted good. My table had the cauliflower to start which I thought was overpriced ($14 for one seasoned head of cauliflower). The rolls were pretty decent. I liked the dynamite a lot. Great pricing for happy hour. Overall: would definitely recommend on a Monday, but not sure if the sushi or drinks are worth it any other day when they're full price. Ambiance is definitely carrying the 4 stars here
The ambiance was so beautiful, the music was light and it felt really calming. All the food came out fresh and was so delicious. Notable mention would be the Waygu fried rice, it was so yummy. We sat at the bar and our bartender made sure to check on us and provided quality service.
Virago is a trendy sushi and cocktail bar that fits right in in The Gulch. I finally had a chance to check out their half-price sushi Mondays, and I was definitely impressed with the vibes inside and the quality of the sushi! If you'd like to take advantage of these great deals, I highly recommend a reservation. I made one for our group of four about two weeks in advance and had no problems. (One time my husband and I tried to walk in on a Monday and just sit at the bar, but it was a two hour wait. Plan ahead if you can!) We were seated in one of the cozy lounge areas, which is cool in looks but not the best set-up if you're planning to order a decent amount of food. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he let us know right away that we'd probably want to put any sushi orders in quickly because it would be a 30+ minute wait. It's not the full sushi menu that's available half-price on Mondays - but they do have a nice selection of rolls, appetizers, and drinks on special. We ordered six of the eight options on the Monday menu, along with the pork belly bao buns. If you're not dining on a Monday, expect to spend a pretty pricey dinner (though again, it is The Gulch and that is to be expected). The bao buns were surprisingly my favorite bite of the night! The pork belly was crispy and saucy, and the bao was light and spongy. Three buns come in one order, so it's a great shareable option. As for the sushi, I think my favorite roll was the New Moon. I also enjoyed their Crunchy California Roll ... it's a classic for a reason, and theirs is fresh and well-prepared!
I felt like I was in a Sex and the City episode coming to Virago. This super trendy restaurant is such an awesome place to come to for drinks and sushi. I highly suggest coming on a Monday evening for their 1/2 off sushi night. We were a group of four and made a reservation in advance. We were seated in a red lit couch area. Although this place is upscale, it is still very intimate. A lot of the seating is very low to the floor. Our server was super helpful and down-to-earth. At one point he even sat on the couch with us to take our order. He was transparent about the sushi being about a 40 minute wait, which we didn't mind. We pretty much ordered all the rolls that were a part of the 1/2 special along with bao buns that our server said was a must. The pork belly bao buns were the star of the night. They were beyond delicious, you have to order this. The rolls we got were tasty and some were quite unique. I got a mocktail that I enjoyed too. The vegan person in our party was able to find quite a few dishes to enjoy too.
Monday night 1/2 price dishes from their happy hour menu. This place is sexy. Cool, loungey vibes with a beautiful bar right in the middle. This spot came recommended by some fellow Yelpers who always know what's good. I would certainly come again, especially for the special on Monday night. They seem to be open pretty late, too. People were still being seated when we left around 9pm. We ordered nearly every sushi off the special menu, and 3 of us demolished about 7 rolls. Fresh, spicy, tasty. The rolls of special weren't cookie-cutter versions of the main menu. Even several cocktails were half-off for Monday. Service was great, they warned us that the sushi was on a 30-40 min wait. I don't think it actually took that long, but appreciated the heads up. We were seated on a low couch with a smaller table. Not sure I could eat a bowl of ramen in any type of cute way seated like this, but sushi is just fine.
Virago is more on the upscale version when it comes to sushi in Nashville. The vibe inside is youthful, dark and somewhat "electric". There is music playing, neon/brighter backlit lights scattered throughout and a cozy but fun environment. I come to virago basically every single Monday because of how good the deals are. They run a promotion where rolls are half priced and drinks are basically 2-4-1. I can usually get in and out with two rolls and 2 sakes for about $30 which is an incredible value proposition. The service is always good, HOWEVER on Mondays it can get slow because of the deal mentioned above and how busy it gets. The bartenders are always incredible and I do prefer to sit at the bar and chit chat with the when I have time. For the food, everything is good, appetizers are standouts. The cauliflower is incredible, the spice and seasoning they put on it I would buy for home use if they sold it. The V2 Edimame is the same, that sauce or seasoning/spice is to die for. The miso soup is also great, but not as good as the others, it's hard to make a standout miso. The rolls on the Monday deal are all good. My favorite being the New Moon, everyone I have had try it said it is one of the most interesting sushi rolls they have ever tasted. The pickled ginger, kimchi and sriracha combo make it have an explosion of flavor. My only complaint would be the normal menu rolls are almost hilariously priced. Some of them being $28+. Now, they do use great food products, and quality ingredients so I understand, but it's hard to justify that price per roll, which is why I go on Mondays. Overall a great place for a date or birthday celebration, or just to sit at the bar and get a nice drink and roll combo.
Ambiance is super dark, cozy, and upscale. Dress up if you want, but also there were some people dressed casually. Right when we walked in, everyone was super nice and attentive. Our waiter was very nice and came around a lot! We went Monday night for their half off menu and got 5 rolls and edamame for under $60! I recommend coming here, especially for the Monday specials.
Great place in the Gulch! Lovely ambiance, definitely fit for special occasions. The menu featured elevated Japanese food, with dishes having interesting toppings like watermelon pop rocks and soy sauce pearls. I liked the veggie role, but it wasn't anything super duper unique. The non vegetarian dishes on the menu definitely were more memorable, which makes sense as they have amazing raw fish options. We were there for a special occasion, and our waitress was very lovely and even treated us with a delicious chocolate mouse cake.
About 8 years ago I went to Virago for the first time. This week I finally got to make it back! I was worried I'd romanticize it since it had been so long and I had such a great experience but it once again, proved worthy of 5 stars. Virago is clean, sleek and still warm. The service is top notch and the food is filled with creativity and flavor. I will always love coming here! If you want clean, flavorful sushi, viragos your place.
We went here for valentines. Again they did not disappoint and the food was amazing. Even with their computers down the service was fast and friendly.

Have been wanting to check this place out for a while and we're so glad we did! Super cool atmosphere, definitely make a reservation in advance. Our waitress was Shayla and she was awesome! The only order that disappointed was the crispy rice and spicy tuna with watermelon pop rocks. It sounded super cool but the "crispy" rice was moreso chewy and the tuna was just ok but our meal improved tremendously from then on--we enjoyed everything else we got. Absolutely loved the hamachi yellowtail sashimi! The volcano roll and truffle futomaki roll were also favorites! It was a sweet surprise to get some free birthday mochi at the end of the meal too! Ernesto was the best and assisted us so well! This was our first time here and we will definitely be coming back. We got the spritz before spring, Geisha's Dance, and Wasabi martini. They were good but the wasabi was definitely one to try if you like spice. Our rolls were SO good! Notable rolls were the oishii and the bomb. We cannot wait to come back! read more

Came here for my birthday dinner and had an amazing time. However, despite the reservation I made a few days early, my family and I had to wait quite a while before our table was actually ready. All that time sitting allowed me to observe the other patrons' attire as they breezed past me. I received a text message to confirm my res, which came with a gentle reminder of Virago's strict dress code for men. No hats or sneakers (?) I think it said. Not once did I see a person denying entry to a man who violated those rules. Aside from this initial hiccup in my bday celebration, the rest of the night went smoothly. We had an excellent waitress, ate some truly spectacular fresh fish and rolls, and finished the evening with not one, but two desserts complimentary of the restaurant who did not know it was my birthday ((even though I'm quite sure I made a note when I booked the reservation online). Drinks were also strong. The vibe is trendy, with low lights and music that was low enough to still have a conversation over. For the sushi alone, I would highly recommend. Especially the $95 tasting that includes 5 rolls and an appetizer. If I'm ever in Nashville again, I will come back. read more

Great sushi spot nestled behind the scenes in Nashville. Service was amazing, and the sushi itself caught us by surprise. For out of town'ers who question sushi inland, this place is a good spot. Make reservations before hand as we showed up and had to wait 45 minutes. If you're a tequila connoisseur, check out the tequila bar next door. A variety of tequilas! read more

The total experience of dining at Virago was wonderful. The food was delicious. I had the Tanto roll and it was not only beautifully presented, it was delicious! My husband had the Wagyu steak cooked on a rock. He loved that experience and said it was amazing . I highly recommend! read more

I usually spend money on expensive dinners at steakhouses. I don't get easily impressed by them. They're a dime a dozen. So trying a boujee sushi restaurant was out of my element, but I was pleasantly surprised. The wasabi martini = delish. The interior = gorgeous. The service = amazing. The vibe = awesome. Maki Sake Monday is where it's at!!! Our anniversary happened to fall on a Monday and we scored on dinner at Virago! The service was fantastic, tasty rolls, and out of this world cocktails! Our favorite was the wasabi martini. Such a unique flavor and just the right amount of spicy kick. We will most definitely be back for more! read more
The food and drinks were delicious, so yay for that. The decor and ambiance was good and made for a good business dinner. However, the service while friendly was pretty slow. We waited 15mins before our first order was taken. Additionally, the first two sake drinks we ordered were not available, but it took them 10 mins to even let us know we had to reorder. Sooo while the experience overall was good and is recommended, it could stand to be improved. Get their shishito peppers, i try them everywhere i go and i dare may say they have the best ive ever had. The poke tostados were super yummy too. read more

A dreamy experience! We came in on a Friday night a week before our actual reservation because I got my nights mixed up. The hostess still sat us and I was so happy she did, because we were so excited for this dining experience. There were so many amazing options on the menu that we had such a hard time choosing and actually went a little bananas with ordering to our hearts content. It was a bit of a celebration due to my raise at work. My favorite roll was the seared salmon with the Siberian caviar on top. It's pictured below. The perfect balance of refined saltiness. Our favorite roll was Kayne Prime and almost ordered two! The volcano roll was fun, but probably our least favorite. That isn't to say that it wasn't delicious, just was more appearance based to us. For desert we had the miso cheesecake which is plated to look like an apple and the Thai tea crème brûlée. Both so yummy! We wanted to come back the very next night! A beautiful atmosphere. Knowledgeable and friendly wait staff. Knock your socks of sushi. Never expected to find sushi this good in Nashville. read more
Three words: Maki-Sake Monday. This is when the magic happens. 2 for 1 cocktails and select maki rolls at half-price is a winning combination. For a bill of $25 I had two cocktails (the lychee/cava cocktail is wonderful) and two maki rolls. I got the dynamite roll which had spicy tuna & salmon and a crunch roll that was topped with salmon and chives. This is a pretty good deal so I was all about it. I also had a few bites of my friend's order which was the hotate 19, which was a sesame baked scallop, shrimp, tempura crunch, avocado & asparagus. It was decadent and delicious. I will say that I reached the conclusion that I am not cool enough to frequent Virago. This is a place where I feel like the fashion of every patron is on-point (I saw some versions of models and hipster cowboys), the modern, dark vibe is ultra mysterious and it feels like the sort of place you could maybe spot someone famous. It is definitely a far cry from a traditional Japanese/sushi spot and more on the trendy side. The service was great here, which is one of the reasons I would come back apart from the Maki-Sake Monday. I had a little birthday get-together with 4 of my girlfriends and our server brought out the cake with candles my friend had sneakily given to her. She split all of the checks quickly and with no problems. Although parking is a nightmare in the Gulch, Virago has complimentary valet parking which is a must for your piece of mind. The valet folks were all quick and efficient as well. Virago is an eye-catching place with good sushi and great service. One of M Street's winning ventures! read more

The quality of Virago's sushi was fantastic! I can't complain about the food--I had the dynamite roll and it was very delicious. Their spicy edamame is good as well. The ambiance is definitely higher-end with dimmed lighting. The menu isn't like a typical sushi restaurant at all, The staff was accommodating, but not particularly welcoming. They are very strict with COVID guidelines (which is very good!), but the way they came across was a tad rude. My friend took her mask down to put a piece of gum in her mouth at the waiting area and was immediately told to pull her mask back up. read more

This hidden gem is located beside 1120 McGavock St in downtown Nashville. Wear a mask & arrive w/ a RESERVATION! Also, BRING A SWEATER; it's kept too cold. We got lucky & had to wait just 25 min, but those who came after us had much longer waits. (You will not be allowed to slide on a facial covering; staff immediately approaches anyone whose nose and/or mouth is exposed.) FIVE stars for this "Sushi & Asian cuisine" restaurant & bar recently updated in a contemporary flair. Virago has been open for 19 years. Suski Chef Hummi has been preparing culinary creations here for the last 16 years. Kudos to the chef! Here you'll find secluded booths, a modern central bar, swivel chairs, long tables, & private dining dining rooms. The bright red & pink hues perfectly accent the dim lighting to create an edgy, energetic vibe (SEE PICS)- a VERY impressive decor! And it's accentuated by the stylishly-clad patrons who frequent this establishment. (I was under dressed in my skinny jeans & tweed flats.) Open Monday thru Saturday from 9 AM till 11 PM, specials are offered. On Mondays, sushi is half-price. Cocktails & Sake are 2 for 1 (dine-in only). We decided to try the $14 Pork Belly Dumpling appetizer (very good), as was the $11 Wasabi Martini. We ordered two of the most expensive rolls on the menu-- the Rainbow Box w/ spicy tuna & salmon @ $22 tasted incredibly fresh. However, it was deceiving in that it was mild in flavor. Nevertheless, it was very good. The $26 Truffle Futomaki roll w/ albacore & panko shrimp was INCREDIBLE! Just so fresh & flavorful! (SEE PIC.) On a subsequent visit, we left w/ a $198 bill; we had yet another phenomenon dinner! We highly recommended the $19 Oishii roll (w/ panko shrimp & ahi tuna). The Samuri Bacon @ $16 was jaw-droppingly DELICIOUS! The $23 BBQ Kimbap was OUTSTANDING, as was the Volcano Roll ($16), Eel Sashimi ($7), & $18 Korean BBQ Bao. And, of course, we had to order another Truffle Futomaki roll! SEE PICS! Server/bartender JACOB (complimented in a previous Yelp review) could not have been friendlier or more helpful & professional. Five nights later we returned, & received excellent service from MARY. Two most worthy employees! There is a $25 Corkage Fee for any bottled not carried, & a $50 Corkage Fee if the business carries it. *There is also a 20% GRATUITY ADDED TO ALL CHECKS* The dress code is "business casual," which includes jeans. Long sleeve shirts, closed toed, shoes, & no hats are expected. (Oddly, female guests have no estsblished dress code.) Staff is dressed in all black. Private dining for 9+ guests, delivery, & curbside are offered. Unsure why this restaurant has not earned more stars from patrons, but price was mentioned in many reviews. The menu prices are clearly listed & Nashville prices are all-around higher than they are in many cities. If I were on a budget, I wouldn't be a regular here, but I'd DEFINITELY splurge monthly to engage in the excellent energy & cuisine this establishment offers. read more

The BEST sushi and dining experience i've had in a while! The ambiance of Virago was incredible with ambient lighting, super comfortable chairs, and stunning decor. We started with the edamame and the special sangria and both were PHENOMENAL! Our server was also such a pleasure and they do a great job for those with allergies. For dinner I got the caterpillar roll, and wow. Just wow. It was absolutely delicious!! My friends enjoyed the bao buns (and loved them) and the wagyu fried rice (also raved upon). It was also a friends birthday, and upon sitting down at out table she was handed a card, and got a free cream puff dessert at the end. Everything about Virago was spectacular. The food was out of this world, the service was top tier, and the ambiance was extraordinary. 10000% would recommend if you are looking for a nice sushi dinner in Nashville!! read more

Loved loved loved the whole little vibe at virago! Sit at the bar! The chairs are soooo comfy and we had fun. Started the night with a flaming dragon and a exposure effect. Both very well curated. Grabbed a Brussel sprout appetizer onb with some hot chicken bao. Both very good. The 3 rolls we chose were fire crunch , smoky heat and the Godzilla. Can't go wrong with any of these choices. Will return next time we're in town. read more
Overall a very delicious dinner and the only reason I knocked down the star is because I think it is a little pricey for what you get. Highly recommend the Crispy Rice and Spicy Tuna appetizer as well as the V2 Edamame. Our favorite roll was The Bomb followed by Oishii. Godzilla and Fire Crunch were good but just a little basic for my taste buds. Truffle Futomaki you will like if you enjoy truffle flavors. Tiger roll is a very refreshing roll. Would definitely come back and try other recommended rolls like Katana and Rising Sun. Desserts were all great! read more
Upscale and classy, high-end and sophisticated, and professional ... that's what used to come to mind when I have come here in the past. I remember going to the old location, with servers that weren't so spread thin that you felt taken care of. The newest location is "a building over" from the old location. It is just "less" of everything that was cool about the old location. Less of a menu, less quality in the construction, material choices of the interior and decor, no windows and low lighting to hide that cheap construction, less staff, less quality people... sorry, I was just a bit disappointed this time. To go to the bathrooms, you have to pass around the entrance and the hostess station, which is small and congested, so add poor planning and design. The only thing that was NOT less was the prices. There were about 50-60 people in the dining area on this Wednesday evening around 8:45 pm. There were 3 hostesses, and only 2 servers and one bartender. Either the managers had a lot of people call out sick, or they are just too cheap to put some help on the clock. At one point, I waited so long for my server, that I just got up from my table and went to the bar to order drinks. Not good staffing management. A positive note.. the food that was ordered was pretty good. But it was pricy considering the level of service (or lack there of). What a fantastic place for a birthday dinner! It can be difficult to eat Asian cuisine when you have a sesame allergy. Virago took my allergy very seriously and our waiter and chef were experts on what was safe to eat with my allergy. We started with the Korean Pork Belly. Delicious! A little bit of a kick. The steamed buns were so addictively soft and the pork was tender. We then had the Smoky Heat, Crunchy Truffle, and some unagi sashimi along with a flight of sake. Best sushi in Nashville hands down. I'm serious when I say it melts in your mouth. We finished with a chocolate martini and the thai tea crème brûlée. Both wonderful. Thank you Virago for the experience! read more

Don't know the most popular item on the menu, but the cook-it-yourself rock dishes are fairly unique. Good place for a double date.
Do they have TVs to watch the game inside or heaters on the patio area if it's cold?
I'm not sure if there's heaters on the outside (should be). You can definitely enjoy the game indoors with a nice cocktail and sushi!!! I love the atmosphere at Virago!
