We were on a work trip and decided to give this place a try and it did not disappoint. Service could not have been better. We were treated like family. The food was amazing. Crab cakes were perfect and all crab. Mac and cheese was incredible. Yams were scrumptious. Chicken stew was so delicious. The cocktails were fabulous. And the waiter gave us a free desert to take with us. Inside, the place is intimate and inviting. I'd say it's a home run. To start I'd say it's a cool atmosphere. The blue lighting and thematic wall paper all add to a hipster vibe. Staff was friendly and inviting, though not especially attentive. She forgot to tell us about Happy Hour, even though we said it was our first time in, and asked about any specials. Also, I will say, the menu is extremely hard to read, as they have decided to label all the menu items as if you were speaking "Gullah"(?) just picture Bubba from Forest Gump saying everything you read, and you should be able to noodle it out. AND, buyer beware, she did advise us that any check over $100 automatically gets 20% gratuity added. Doesn't matter how big or small your party; I guess they have had some issues with customers not tipping well. The Happy Hour happened to include the most expensive ($29+) appetizer sampler for only $15, so we ordered that to start. It was a nice array of two of each, Deviled Eggs,Wings, Shrimp, and some Crab Balls, and an unknown Eggroll item. I would have been mad if I paid $30 for this appetizer. Not worth entree money! The Shrimp and Grits (A.k.A. Skrimp and Grits with Crab) was my pretty good. 6 shrimp with a dusting of crabmeat, but the grits were wayyy too wet for my taste. You can't eat these with a fork. My friend had the pork chops. They were ok. Nothing stood out to me as particularly outstanding. I found some of the items to be what I would consider institutional tasting. We stopped by Virgil's on a whim after landing in Atlanta. We did not have a reservation, but were able to be seated within 15 minutes. The service was friendly and accommodating throughout the entire visit. I ordered the Skeeta Beach to drink and that drink was STRONG. Whew. You definitely get your moneys worth here. To eat, I got the Bussin' corn muffins and the Skrimp n Grits wit crab. The corn muffins were very appropriately named as they were moist, had the earthy sweetness from the sweet potato, and were drizzled in the best honey drizzle I've ever had. The grits were very smooth and the crab gravy was a nice flavor touch. What I appreciated most about the dish were the almost translucent shrimp served alongside it. Got there at 9 pm after a long day of travel to find the door locked and a "temporarily closed" sign on the door. I've just learned that the reataurant suffered a fire. While in Atlanta for a weekend, a few high school classmates and I opted to patron Black-owned restaurants and Virgil's Gullah Kitchen & Bar was on of the spots we tried on a whim. Talk about a good choice. Since we were going to several restaurants throughout the day, we opted for a set of appetizers. The sweet potato corn muffins were a blast. We ordered fried green tomatoes and had them topped with lump crab. We were quite okay paying a small upcharge for the lump crab, which made the fried green tomatoes taste that more delicious. The fried okra with jalapeno slices also hit the spot. It was a good flavor combination. We ordered one entrée that we shared. It was shrimp, lump crab, and fried oysters over grits. There are not enough words to describe how that dish left us in silence. It could fuel an addiction, for true. Big ups on the service and the outstanding food. As always, the food at Virgils is amazing! We went in the Sunday evening for dinner. Only two complaints: 1. The Mac and cheese was cold and, 2. The red rice was cold as well. Even with that, it still hit the spot and can across. They were relatively busy which meant drinks were refreshed as much as we liked. But, the food came our relatively quickly and the order was accurate. Karimah did her thing and, seamlessly, went from busy table to busy table making sure everyone was good. Thanks Super Star! Black owned, black operated, fabulous food and vibes! They have a DJ that played all the hits, the staff was nice and the food was AMAZING! Chile it was an experience... They had all kinds of options for food including vegan...everything was so tasty & flavorful! It did take a while to get the bartender's attention but he was doing a lot and the place was starting to get packed so he was running here, there, everywhere:) Also my server didn't really check up on me that often, he was nice though but I found myself flagging him down more often than not... We were walking around College Park with no real plan in mind. Our flight got cancelled and they put us up in a hotel so we were just exploring this part of the city. We stumbled on Virgil's and sat at the bar. Ari, according to the receipt, greeted us with a smile and welcomed us to Virgil's with menus and glasses of water. We looked over the drink menu and got the Get Tight Up. When she said she, she smirked and said are you sure? Lol now this is a craziest drink on the menu with tequila, rum, vodka and whiskey in it so I get why she asked. She was having fun making the drinks and dancing along with the DJ's fun beats. Those drinks I have to say were really delicious. I got mine with mango and my husband got his with strawberry. Both tasted really good. We weren't too hungry but their menu has some damn good sounding dishes on it so we had to try something. Parking: Angle street parking or the free municipal parking behind the building which is a little dark Forms of Payment: Cards Only, they are now a CASHLESS establishment. I have been coming to Virgils for the last 2yrs and I must say the food is still good, the drinks are STILL GREAT, the customer service is still good. The Bartenders don't stay long but it was good to see Kia is still there & the new Bartender Ski was very accommodating & made me a good strong drink. They have raised the prices & changed some of the food & drinks options, also the portions are smaller. So if you are looking for something you once had, it may no longer be an available option. I always sit at the bar & this time I saw roaches during my time at the restaurant on top of the bar. The roaches came out at 2 different times once when I placed some food to the side & the 2nd when I was finishing up my drink. I hope they get this problem under control because that was way more roaches than I care to see in a restaurant. Now they have also incorporated a mandatory 20% gratuity if your bill is over $50, I do have a problem with this because when you get great service you are inclined not to leave an additional tip. Now what I do have an issue with is my bill was $46 pre-tax & with the tax it comes to $50.05, then they tried to add the 20% gratuity to the total taxed amount, which is not correct. Now you are trying to impose a gratuity charge that is actually incorrect according to the policy the restaurant has established. The Bartender was nice enough to remove this fee because it was an inaccurate charge for the amount of my bill. 1 is what they are getting & it should be 2 but the Bartender was so nice, attentive & she provided great customer service. read more

I brought my father here on a Saturday during brunch and the DJ was on point the alcohol selection is a little skimpy but they do have a bar. I didn't try any of their cocktails, and the food was very flavorful well seasoned and good. We were visiting Atlanta and stopped by just to get a taste of some of the food, we tried the fried chicken and fried pork chops. They were very good. I actually wish that we had got a plate but we had already got our food to go and had left before we even tasted the food. Just disappointed that we did not get more; the next time I'm in Atlanta I would definitely stop by here again to get more food and highly recommended to anyone thats in the area. They have great suggestions for the menu (we were dining at the restaurant for the first time) and the food service was prompt. i was floored to have paid $90+ ($103 with tip cause I'm not dirty like that ) for chicken wing flats i could have gotten at JJ's for $20 - since that was the only thing on the plate that was tasty enough to eat. and im really not writing home about the wings! Our food was cold at each placement. Our waitress was not very personable as some as the others that i observed who explained the options and cuisine culture to other patrons. My Friends from James's island would not like this representation of their home cooking. Stopped by to grab a quick bite to eat with some friends. I've seen this restaurant before and was eager to try it. We sat at tbe bar because the restaurant was pretty full. I wanted to try the crab dip but they were out for the day. I wanted to try the gumbo and it was in the works. I then settled for some fried shrimp, salmon balls and cornbread. The fried shrimp was fried shrimp it was seasoned well. The salmon balls were soooo good. The cornbread was a bit of a miss. It didn't really have cornbread consistency more like a biscuit. Really wish I could give this place a better rating, but I must provide an honest review. Let's start with the positives: - Service was great! Our server Jamal was very sweet and helpful when we needed recommendations. The rice was OK, but was a little too buttery, making it almost a weird texture because of the okra - For my entree, I did an a la carte order of 3 wings and fried okra. The wings were pretty good! Seasoned well and big enough to be filling. The fried okra also used the same, unseasoned batter from the fried green tomatoes. Surprise! We were able to walk-in and be seated. My husband and I have been trying to get into this busy place for awhile. We've heard great things about the food and not such great things about the service but this day we had excellent and fast service for a Saturday evening visit(5pm). I ordered more sides than a meal because everything on the menu sounds good. I had corn muffins with sweet potato puree(and honey) which were amazing to smell the nutmeg, and even better to taste. The very unique red-rice & shrimp egg rolls were my second favorite (i also ordered a side of red rice because of these) Now although we had success in timing, appetizer's and service there were a few missed opportunities. The music was so loud. This prevents you from having quieter dialogues and causes all neighboring tables to scream their conversations out and some conversations should be avoided. While trying to eat- and NOT overhear- we overheard the most ridiculous. My husband ordered a meal which added 3fried shrimp and these shrimp were obviously over and/or RE fried. Upon asking for return of those(which was accommodated without any issues) within 5mins he was brought beautiful golden Shrimp! I have no idea why the first batch made it on the plate. Lastly, I tried the She-crab soup which was too salty to fully enjoy. There is an auto 20% gratuity which should have been told, advertised or posted on the menu but we did not see this. While the service was good- I do not believe ANY resturant should auto anything with MY money when i'm not in a large group. This made the experience sour while trying to bypass the EXTRA tip screen as my server stands over me with the handheld payment unit. Nor did we receive an itemized check to be able to verify the charges were correct. I should not have to ask for this, as a customer when I ask for the check- I should receive this, and not a person with a hand held device looking at me for my form of payment. read more
