I've been here several times since Virgil's first opened at this location. This restaurant has improved in quality and service over the years. It's nice to witness management taking the customer experience so seriously. I've ordered (both dine in and takeout) the sammen plate, corn muffins, afta church plate, catfish platter (when it was around), grits, egg rolls, and a variety of alcoholic cocktails. The cocktails are typically great. For the most part, it's always a relatively pleasant experience dining here. I awarded 4 stars and not five for small service inconsistencies like missing ingredients. Once something is noticed however, it is addressed immediately. I liked the name and the cuisine. Pretty good reviews, but if you've been on Yelp as long as I have, you know that standards vary greatly. And Virgils was no exception! Food was excellent! Deviled Eggs, Corn Bread, Sunday Plate, Grouper, and Seafood Platter. Undeniably Good. Service. Undeniably Bad! Muy malo! If you have to sit at the bar even when you have reservations. No bueno! If you have to flag someone down to get them to take your order. I am looking for an alternative option. If you charge a 20% service fee for services not rendered. Shame on you. First stop during our visit to Covington and what a cute little place. It's small but inviting with a colorful mural depicting a modern day community last supper which was beautiful to look at. It was fairly early but restaurant was already pretty full but we were given a choice of where we wanted to sit which is always nice to be asked. Our server was bubbly and pleasant full of hospitable Southern charm! The drinks were very good and we took her recommendations on best dishes and ordered. I ordered the blackened salmon with crab cream sauce, however the salmon came out deep fried?! It was well seasoned but not blackened so yes I was disappointed. I didn't bother mentioning it because how does a chef confuse fried with blackened?! I also got red rice that was dry and felt like it wasn't made today and lacked any flavor. My crab cream sauce was clearly broken and oily although flavorful. My companion got a seafood boil over grits and everything was fried again although seasoned and tasty it shouldn't have been called a boil. I was offered to replace the red rice with the crab rice and unfortunately bit into a shell. Since my previous review from a year ago I definitely can see that this business is growing because the food is still delicious!! They now have have a much better menu with many more options. The gumbo was excellent, the bread pudding was to die for, and the stuffed flounder was very tasty with plenty of crab stuffing! The stewed chicken dish was good. But my only complaint was that the chicken was a bit hard, which made it somewhat dry. The bartender Tee was excellent and although they didn't have the large ice cubes for the old-fashioned, it was still an excellent drink!! I will definitely be back to check out the happy hour. We went for Valentine's Day and didn't have a reservation. They were able to accommodate us at the bar and it was super busy. The bartender was great for the most part but later on I think in the chaos of the rush, she forgot to put in our order so we ended up waiting over an hour for our food, even though tables around us, got their food ahead of us. My husband and I went back here for dinner for my bday last Wednesday, 11-26. Since it was the day before Thanksgiving, it was very slow. We were seated immediately. It seems as though it was just 2 ppl working the front...which wasn't bad, but it did make things slower...even though they weren't busy...but we weren't in a rush. I ordered the salmon with fried oysters and shrimp...so I thought! It was only 1 fried oyster and 1 shrimp...yep you heard it right...ONE!! LMBO!! Who does that?...I guess they do! The one oyster was soooo good!! I actually didn't know what it was when I ate it...I've never had a fried oyster before...well at least not that I can remember and it was GREAT!! With Conyers being a small town, options were limited. This establishment however was recommended multiple times with rave reviews and did not disappoint. There was some confusion with our reservation due to it not being in their server, but we were still able to be sat. For a Friday afternoon, the place was packed but not overcrowded. All of the food we ordered was great and have absolutely no complaints. They also had a bomb playlist playing early 90s R&B. My favorites were their Sol E Gre Crab Cakes and Fushamen's Nuggits. Everything was seasoned well and fried to perfection, and the portions were enough to take home for a second wave of Southern goodness. Service was a bit slow, my mom did have to get up and check on a drink order and go to the server to ask for to go boxes. Overall I would dine here again. read more

I was kinda sad this Easter because I wasn't able to spend it with family. I still wanted my traditional soul food dinner though. After church, I came across Virgil's searching for soul food and decided to drive by and see if they were open. Luckily they were. I placed a togo order of stuffed flounder with crab rice, greens, sweet potatoes and yams! I tried Virgils in Atlanta and had a great experience. I am sorry to say that I was disappointed at this location. I ordered salmon and red rice. The salmon was very overcooked, no moisture at all. I did still enjoy the cornbread. That was the best part. The server never brought my water and it was not busy. I will give them another try, but will stay away from the fish. read more

The food was freaking amazing. The service was freaking amazing. The only complaint I have is this place is not in California. I don't know who the chef is that but they should get a raise. This was our 3rd time here. The first time the hostess looked bewildered when we entered but eventually asked us if we needed a table for two. The food and service were great. Salmon, Mac n cheese greens. Pork chop. We had to wait about 10 minutes on a knife as they only give you a fork. Perhaps staff should automatically bring a knife when people order the meat. The second time we were immediately greeted by the host and opted to set at the bar. We ordered waters then saw a roach spinning on its back on the bar so we left. Today was our 3rd and probably final time dining here. Hostess immediately greeted us. Again we sat at the bar. It's lent so we only ordered sides. Mac n cheese, greens, yams, green beans, corn. They are all served in individual bowls and that's ok BUT when I asked for plates (so we could feel like we were eating a proper meal) they were clearly bothered. The mac was dry, the greens and green beans were severely over seasoned but the yams were on point! Not too sweet. Service was blah. Also noticed unclean behaviors like our server scratching her head (luckily she did not bring our food out) staff filling a styrofoam cup that they had clearly been drinking from previously with ice. Seems unsanitary to me. The health score was low 80's. I really hate this because we want to support this business but we need to see some changes. read more

So muffins, fish dish and 3 cocktails came to $100 (including tip). That is why they got the 3 stars. That is just crazy! 1 entree, shared for $100! The food was good (my friend didn't like the rice) but not $100 good. This is a little nicely decorated casual restaurant in downtown Conyers. Im not sure why the price point was so high. My daughter brought me here for my birthday in June and I was too disappointed. The service was lackluster, the food was good, and the space is absolutely too doggone small. We had a reservation and were told, by the hostess, that the restaurant overbooks, so we were told we would wait an hour past our reservation time. That was upsetting and unforgiveable. This spot is TOO SMALL for all that. If you know you only have four tables and two highboy tables, why would you overbook to the extent that people with reservations can't be seated when they arrive for their reservation. The bartender was rude. She tried to play it like she was being playful, but she was just rude. We decided to sit at the bar because we didn't want to wait an hour for a table. When we sat down I was checking on everyone to make sure we were all there and comfortable and she told me, "I know it's your birthday, but it's all about me," because she wanted me to listed to her. I laughed it off, but this establishment will never get another dime from me. The location is good; downtown Conyers. There is ample parking, even on a Sunday early afternoon we were able to find a spot that was a short walk from the restaurant. It's just too small!!!! This business gets a lot of traffic based off the name. This location is not going to cut it. We enjoyed our food. I didn't feel like the prices were out of the ordinary either, but I won't be back due to the rude bartender and how small it is. Edit: I did speak with a manager about my reservation not being honored once I had been waiting for about 15 minutes, but no conversation was had about anything else that occurred that day. Met a friend for lunch here. It was my first time trying it and I loved it. We tried the corn muffins and they were delish. I had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the waffles are so good. But I could only eat one! It's so thick and rich. I enjoyed it the next day for breakfast. My friend had the catfish with collards and Mac n cheese. She said the collards were a 10/10 and Mac was just ok. The place had a great vibe and playlist was lit. 1st the vibes ... We sat next to a lady explaining to the waiter/ manager... the wait was ridiculous. Still we didn't judge, but ordered our food anyway way. Major mistake!!! We got the Sunday plate and pasta... After an hour- 15 minutes, we ask for how long more.... We were told 5 minutes, and apx 10 minutes later only the Sunday plate was served and no pasta. We were told 5 minutes on Pasta.... 15 minutes later no pasta... I don't know if I just starving, but the food was tasty, however the chicken was just warm... One would think after an hour and half, everything would be hot and perfect. 15 minutes later no pasta. We just took the Sunday dinner and canceled the rest of the order.... Bummer because I really wanted to try the bread pudding. Our waiter was apologetic - and gave us the pasta, however at this point we were done. I was really excited to try this place after looking at the menu. They have a number of options that sound amazing. Finally had the chance to visit last weekend and we were immediately seated and our server was friendly. The decor is cozy and seemed like a great date spot. The drinks all seem mimosa related so you will struggle if you are not a champagne fan. I ordered a Moscow mule but received a "mimosa mule"?? I was really looking forward to the chicken and waffles, but they were "out of waffles". How? Unless they're not freshly made & bought from somewhere? Anyway, I ended up trying the shrimp and grits with crab gravy. The shrimp smelled off to me but my husband said it smelled fine so I started eating. Within 15 minutes I was sick in the bathroom. Well the reviews don't lie. I decided to give this place a try after hearing so many good things about it. I got there right when they're opened on a Saturday and I made a reservation. It's not much parking on the street but I was able to find a parking lot behind a art studio to park in . It's a small restaurant, but it's very cozy inside . The only noted downside was one small bathroom in the whole place. I tried the chicken and waffles and the shrimp and grits, and both were very delicious . The inside of this location is nice, but it's very frustrating trying to place an order. They NEVER answer the phone, and whenever I try to order online it says "Currently not accepting orders." This was a hard review. We ordered Bussin Muffins, Okra Gumbo, and Slamming Salmon. Muffin and Salmon I would order again for sure if I ever decided to return. I eat one meal a day and follow Keto Mon-Sat so Sunday is my cheat meal I was really saddened that I couldn't enjoy the Okra Gumbo it was extremely salty to me so I asked my husband to try he agreed salty. We returned it and split the salmon. I've worked in restaurants in the past and typically never reorder once food is sent back. If you know you know. Fast forward the bill comes with the Okra on it. We ask for it to be removed and the host tells us we took the okra back and tried it and it wasn't too salty that's our recipe. I want to say disbelief but this maybe a GA thing idk. I'm not paying for something I didn't eat point me to who I need to speak with. She did and he immediately removed it. I was thankful he was quick to rectify the problem. The bartender and food runner were very kind and quick with service. Our server seemed to have a lot on her mind. We asked for no ice we got ice I asked for the okra to be my entree she attempted to bring it out with the muffins which I must add we had to ask what was taking so long on the muffins and she replied "oh you want them now with the okra" again I repeated I wanted it as an entree she returns with muffins and tells me the okra is done I asked her to hold it to wait for my husbands food. We had to repeat stuff several times and even go looking for her 2x it wasn't empty but far from busy . There was one other couple sitting, a couple and a single man at bar so in total 7 people including myself and my husband.
