Virgil's was the best food I had during my entire trip to NYC. Overall, I was disappointed with the food in the city, but Virgil's was decent. I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and found the restaurant moderately crowded. We were greeted promptly and seated upon entry. I found the space comfortable and relaxed. Our waiter was polite and attentive. We ordered the corn bread as an appetizer. I prefer sweet cornbread versus jalapeño, so it wasn't my thing. However, my cousin is the opposite and she really enjoyed it. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, greens, and biscuit. I didn't care for the greens, but the biscuit and pulled pork was excellent. My sister had the ribs, greens, and dirty rice. She didn't like any of her food. She said the ribs had a lot of gristle. There was very little meat on the bone. I tasted the rice and agreed with her assessment. It wasn't that good. Our cousin had the chicken, mac-n-cheese, and baked beans. She liked her food. My cousin had been to Virgil's before many years ago and said this experience mirrored past ones. We all ordered dessert as well. i had the strawberry shortcake, which wasn't great. The strawberries were fresh, and I liked the whipped cream, but the "shortcake" was actually the same biscuit that was served with my meal. It wasn't sweet enough and just didn't work well. I ended up picking over the dessert, so most of it went to waste. My sister had the key lime pie which she didn't like. My cousin had the banana pudding which she enjoyed. Overall, the experience got mixed reviews, but I'd visit Virgil's again in the future for sure. The bill ended up being about $150 plus, if I recall correctly, because we ordered alcoholic beverages as well. read more

As many times as I've been to Times Square I had never been to Virgil's but I was so glad that I did! Amazing BBQ, fantastic service, and a great bar; you cannot miss with this spot. No matter if you want to come for a game day and sit at the bar by yourself or come as I did, on 2 mega buses and have a reserved corner of the restaurant for your guests. Either way you are aiming to be pleased. Our party was. served family style - passing around 2-3 plates of different meats and sides. Chicken, ribs, greens, banana pudding, mac&chz; you name it! I suggested dinner at Virgil's Real BBQ today, after a Broadway show with friends. This place has been around for a long time and it gives real Honky Tonk vibes. The happy hour menu was in full swing when we arrived so our table of four sampled a few things. Korean BBQ ribs were tender and flavorful but much too fatty for my liking. The popcorn shrimp served with real popcorn was tasty. Lemonade spiked with vodka and served in Mason jars was really good. My friend said her pulled pork sliders were just a bit dry. From the main menu I ordered deviled eggs sprinkled with crumbled bacon. My main course was a Caesar Salad with grilled shrimp. Everything was delicious. Our servers were very patient and let us linger which was very nice. About an hour in, we were treated to live music and we ordered another round of spiked lemonade. Our bill at the end was really low considering how much food we ordered. I plan to attend a few more Broadway shows this year, so Virgil's Real BBQ will be seeing more of me. read more

Fantastic BBQ and watering hole in the middle of the times Square area. Stopped here during the Knick's parade and had some really good food and drink here while cooling down in the AC. Plenty of TVs on both floors if you're there for the sports, but the food is definitely a star of the show and they have a heavy hand with the drinks. Service is a very very attentive and quick. Your drinks come out almost immediately followed by the appetizers once you put the orders in. Pretty large portion served on a wood cutting board and more than likely you will need to get some to go boxes. read more

Was meeting a friend to see a Broadway matinee. I have eaten here about five times but always for dinner. Wasnt really aware that they did breakfast, but decided to have breakfast until they switched the menu at 11am for lunch.. Sandra our wonderful waitress suggested a breakfast that had eggs, homefries, pancakes, sausage, bacon and toast. We shared that and then got wings and beer for lunch! Couldn't resist stopping in for some down home comfort food! It's such a fun environment and even nicer as it's decorated for the holidays. Our server, Tanesha answered all our questions and made suggestions. We both went for the triple pit bowls. It has been many many years since the last time I've been to New York City and Times Square. Unfortunately, my wife was sick and was not able to accompany me on this business trip . Virgil is a must stop if you're in New York City in near Time Square . They have a really good happy hour menu for food and different drinks and the food portion on the happy hour. Menu is really really good. I opted for the two selection dinner off the dinner menu and I got the two ribs and the brisket with mashed potatoes and gravy, and the smoked beans were off the wall . My appetizer was the smoked deviled eggs, which were really really good . The service was extremely friendly and helpful and really made you feel welcomed and comfortable . I had a chance to meet the manager, who is a very nice individual and tried to assist with a gift card that I had for many years ago which they no longer issue those type of cards which is not surprising. It's been at least 10+ years since we had those cards and she recommended that I called the corporate office which I will do and I appreciate her help. Thank you Food came out fairly quick and it came out hot and was well presented as you can tell in the photos they have all kinds of different foods. You cannot go wrong with anything you order. One thing that has changed over the years was that you were able to buy their barbecue sauce in jars and they no longer offer those custom jars anymore, which was a bummer because they are sauce is simply divine . Surprisingly great spot in Times Square for BBQ. It's a huge restaurant so plenty of room if you're coming with a large group. Our waitress Unique was amazing, she knew the menu in and out and made a bunch of great suggestions. The brisket is a must. I wasn't gonna get it, but she talked me into it along with the dirty rice. Ribs and Mac and cheese also great. The portions are huge and the prices are pretty reasonable for the area. There were a few small mix ups with the food due to the kitchen, but Unique was on top of it, and the manager even came over to check on us. They comped our dessert which was really sweet. There are very limited American BBQ options in the area, so this one feels a bit touristy, which makes sense given its Times Square location. Made a reservation for 3 @7:30. For there like 7:20 was seated right away we went upstairs. We sat and looked at our menus went to the bathroom now about 15 minutes has past nobody had stopped by. I saw a staff member and asked her if she knew who was attending our table and that I knew it was busy but nobody came at least to greet us. Finally the gentleman came he was very sweet and we asked his recommendations. We got the jackie to share he said the chil was small so I opted to also get a burger. I ended up not eating it and taking it home as it was so much food. I was with my two grown sons one ordered fried chicken with sweet potatoes tater tots and mac and cheese the other ordered the nashville chicken which he didn't love because it was a sauce he thought it would be a dry rub. He got mac and cheese and the caviar cowboy he sent it back as he said it was not good the guy gave him another mac and cheese. They also ordered a half lemonade half tea drink and I had a taste it was so good. As the wiater was very nice he wash every attentive. We had to loook for him for water etc . Everything about our visit was perfect. From the moment we walked in and was greeted by the hostess so nicely, then seated with plenty of room for the 3 of us. We ordered drinks and viewed the menu for a minute. We decided on brisket/pulled pork nachos for the table. The nachos came out and everyone enjoyed them. The pulled pork was so tender along side of the brisket. Perfect flavors along side with the peach habanero BBQ sauce/mild BBQ and hot BBQ. The nachos pretty much filled us up as a happy hour pre dinner meal. Everyone at Virgil's was so nice and accommodating to us. I was in New York for an extended stay and wanted some BBQ. When I first got to Times Square I went to Dallas BBQ which I did not enjoy. I am a BBQ connoisseur and I was very disappointed that their offerings were nowhere near traditional BBQ standards. Virgil's, however, did a much better job at that. Although there was no woodsmoke smell when I walked into the restaurant and my order (spare ribs and brisket) did not have any smoke flavor I will attribute that to the food being heated up in a microwave after possibly being smoked earlier which does take some of the smoke flavor away. Although the smoke flavor was lacking the flavor of the meat was not. The brisket was good and so were the ribs without sauce. I did add sauce to my ribs because that is the way I like to eat them but I didn't add sauce to my brisket at all. The collard greens were very good and the buttermilk biscuit with the maple butter was very tasty. The service was a little slow but not nonexistent. Both servers I had were very nice. Last thought: For people who are staying in Times Square and have a taste for BBQ Virgil's is probably the closest to traditional BBQ that you are going to get in Times Square. read more

We had an early dinner at Virgil's after the Lion King matinee (I fell asleep but that's a completely different review). Carmine's was swamped so Virgil's was also recommended. We made 5:30 reservations but got there an hour early and they still seated us. First seats we were freezing so we were moved upstairs. Brett(I think) was our server and he couldn't be nicer or more accommodating. He gave us honest reviews and guidance on foods we were considering which was super helpful as none of the 3 of us ever ate here. Completely forgot to take pictures! Everything from the sweet iced tea to the grits were so tasty without being too salty or drowning in sauce. We had fried chicken with and without the sauce, grits, collard greens, hush puppies, brisket, ribs and cornbread. Not a complaint and one of us is EXTREMELY picky! Service 10. Food 9. Ambiance 8. Went on Saturday with group of 16. We had reservation for 530pm. Did not get table until 6:30! Just stood one hour by overcrowded bar barely able to move. Server and staff very nice but overwhelmed and understaffed. Every portion of the meal took forever to come out. Dinner lasted almost 4 hours ! Drinks were brutal. The Old fashion was amateur hour ! Couple small cubes floating around almost melted. Embarrassing to let that go out. Watermelon Margarita average at best. Looks and tastes like bartenders just rushed every drink at our table. Some drinks were supposed to come with spice or sugar rim finish and none of them did. Quality is not happening here, Just quantity. Appetizers were bar food quality. Fried pickles Overcooked and greasy. Hush puppies average. Bbq wings appetizer was good. The house made hot sauce is great ! Rest of dinner was just not very good. Potatoes and gravy cold. Steak overcooked. Smoked 1/2 chicken dry and bland. Mexican corn and fries pretty good. I don't want to go into more of the food as most of it is basically average bar food. Bathroom!! No soap and dirty floors and sink !! Served lukewarm coffee and tea. Cappuccino machine was not operable. Deserts were good. Management needs to do better and give the staff more help. Cannot pack the place in beyond capacity. No one at our table except for the person next to you is able to hold a conversation with the music and overfull room of people talking. Times Square is full of fancy, expensive restaurants - this is thankfully not one of them. The atmosphere is fun and laid back, and we were lucky enough to visit on a night they had live music. Definitely a good choice for some drinks and appetizers with friends to celebrate the end of the work week or before or after a show. Our waiter Spencer was attentive and took my gluten allergy VERY SERIOUSLY. He not only was helpful in selecting items, but he also brought over the manager so I knew what I could safely eat and not eat and could place my order without worry. Every time I'm in Time Square, I always pass this place, but I've never experienced it until now, and let me tell you the food was on point. The ambience is a nice chill rodeo looking place. Upon entering they have a Halloween decorated section where we could sit down and take pictures. I thought that was pretty cool. My friend and I ordered The Pig Out which is a serving for two people, and it consisted of dry rub pork ribs, the most juiciest and tender barbecue chicken, brisket and carolina pulled pork with a small portion of coleslaw and pickled red onions, which was to die for. And for our sides, we got their mac & cheese, cornbread and collard greens. It came with what I can only assume is their signature sauce which was delicious. We also had three different sauces to choose from on our table to pair with our meats. For our drinks, we opted for the frozen Kicked Up Peach Lemonade. Everything was really delicious. Virgil's is an iconic restaurant that serves arguably the best barbecue in NYC. Everyone knows that. We did our yearly pilgrimage to Virgil's following our trip to the NYC auto show yesterday and were greeted at our table by Sandra who was very sweet and knowledgeable about the beer selection (which is extensive and worthy of a trip there by itself) and she recommended an IPA. My friend and I ordered two IPA's as suggested and our wives ordered their various beverages as well. Moments later Tino, who works as a team with Sandra at the restaurant, came to the table with the two IPA's in hand , looked at my friend and I and politely asked if we were the "Two gentlemen with the "Radiant Pigs". As it turns out "Radiant Pigs" was the name of the beer but the comedy in it all was just hilarious! Even our wives laughed. We all had a great moment and I am still chuckling now. Thank you Sandra and Tino. We will look forward to seeing you again next year. read more
