This is the ONLY place you should rent from. They are local and all the employees are eager to help and educate anyone who comes in! I've skied their equipment for 10+ years and would never go anywhere else. Scott tuned up my skis for me and waxed them free of charge. If you want a company that cares go with Virgin Island! Update: I bought new boots and brought my skis here to have them fitted and they informed me my bindings were outdated and would not work with the new boots. Free of charge they replaced my bindings with some of their used rentals and just said "go enjoy the new boots". I want to give a shout out to Max for excellent customer service. My husband and kids picked up their ski rental gear early this morning and reported staff is friendly and offered suggestions for skiing locations. They are training new staff who forgot to adjust my daughter's ski to fit her boot. So when I came back with my daughter to get the skis adjusted, Max took care of us and was apologetic for the inconvenience, indicating that this should not happen. I appreciate their willingness to appease annoyed moms and he even gave us one day ski rental for my daughter for our inconvenience. Thank you so much for rectifying the problem and earning lifelong customers any time we come back to Colorado. Luckily they recommended Keystone as being less crowded and closer on a Saturday before Christmas, so the drive back to the shop did not take much time. It's located right off the exit, so it's a super easy place to stop and grab rentals before heading further west to the big resorts like Vail (and their prices are much better). I had no issues with my gear and everything was properly fitted. Highly recommend! We were skiing in Vail, but my husband previously rented from VI, so we decided to use them again. I don't know enough about gear to know how they compare to other shops, but they are SO much less expensive than other outfits in the area, and we had a great experience. I had a horrible time with my boots on my first day; I'd never skied before and didn't know how they were supposed to fit (or not fit, I guess). We drove back up in the afternoon, and I limped in to see if I could get my boots swapped out. They listened to the issues I was having, and the boots I ended up with were perfect for me. Really appreciated the friendly service and attentiveness. Note: there's some conflicting info about opening hours on Google vs Yelp, but they open at 8 right now! read more

This place scams you with their "reservation" system. It doesn't reserve and/or guarantee anything. According to an employee, the reservation "just gets you in the door". I wish I would have known this, maybe I wouldn't have had to buy used kids skis when they had nothing for me at my reservation or the next day. (Everywhere wise was booked since it was spring break). Supposedly it's in the fine, fine print online that "nothing is guaranteed"...whatever, you need to be more clear on that since no one that was in the same boat as me was aware of that. I've lived in Summit County for 36 years (a transplant from NYC). I've got all the equipment I need for skiing and every other sport up here. But when I need something fixed or adjusted, and it's beyond my skill set, I always go to Virgin Islands. Why? Two reasons: they're off the chart competent, and off the chart friendly. You've got Dan, Rachael, Scott and maybe some others I've not met yet. They all compete to see who can be the friendliest. You walk in the door and within about two seconds someone's greeted you, asked about your day, and asked what they can do for you. You get the sense that merely having walked in, has made everyone in the place happier. I'm not kidding. Recently I brought my skis in to get sharpened. They waxed and sharpened them for a good price, and I was ringing up at the register, I asked one of them how to remove these old stickers the former owner had placed on the skis, and which looked ugly as sin. The guy at the register started sharing tips about how to get them off, and then Scott--who I think is the owner--came over and said: "Oh, I'll get those off for you." And then he spent about 15 minutes of his own time carefully removing the stickers on both skis with a razor blade. Didn't charge me a penny. Just to be clear, I don't really know these folks. I only go in there once every couple years or so. They certainly don't recognize me. It's just that every time I go in, I get impressed all over again. It is a true delight doing business with these people. Someone should film them for a YouTube video on how a local business can be friendly to its customers, and by doing so earn repeat business. One more thing, for tourists coming to ski at any of the four ski areas in Summit County (or Vail and Beaver Creek further down on I70) Virgin Islands is super conveniently located. It's right at the Silverthorne exit off I70 (Exit 205) and is right behind the McDonalds. Even if you're having a bad day, you'll leave that place with a smile on your face. read more

OK- we have been going to Virgin for years and I thought we need to throw some Love their way- The team here is top-notch; they know what they are doing and how to read the needs of skier/snowboarders even if you as a client, have no idea what you need/want. 2. I made a reservation on their website, including a deposit, and then dropped by later in the day to pick up the skis. I get to the store: there's no line for rentals, no organization and none of the workers even acknowledge me. Eventually I get one to help me out, he looks at my reservation and says it's not valid because they're out of skis and I would have had to make my reservation weeks ago. I ask him why the website let me make a reservation and put down a deposit and he just shrugs and says they have no control over the website. No apology, no effort to make it right in any way. I then have to wait in line at the register for 10 minutes just to get my money back. What a waste of time. read more

I've been renting from Virgin Island for 30 years and have referred dozens of friends. Their service has gone down hill on my last 2 visits and I will never use them again. Last week a good friend of mine rented skis for his 11 year old son. When we got to the mountain, we realized the boots were never fitted to the bindings. The boots were larger than the bindings and my friend and his son had to miss the entire first day of skiing. The basic quality control of every ski rental where each boot is popped into the bindings to confirm proper setting never took place. This could have lead to a very serious injury. The staff didn't really show much concern. They refunded the boys rental fee, but weren't too concerned about the safety issue or the fact that about $250 of lift tickets were wasted. Until something changes at that shop, I wouldn't risk your safety with their service. read more

Rented skis for my husband here on a Friday afternoon without reservations. Process was efficient and easy and we were out the door in about 5-10 minutes. He only needed skis, so cannot speak to experience with boots/helmet/pole rentals. Drop off was also quick, as you just place in rack and are good to go. I ALWAYS rent my skis and gear from this location. The attendant handed me dirty boots and an equally dirty helmet with hair inside. I asked if he could clean up the boots and helmet. His response: "It's a rental"! I was surprised because his response lacked any tact or customer service. I asked for another helmet that was clean, he said that is the only XL helmet that they had available. I asked for his name and he told me it was Allen. He continued to explain that it's just a rental. I stopped him and said "It's ok. I won't be coming back". In the end, he said he polished the boots, they were still dirty. I found some dried out Lysol wipes and some hand sanitizer and wiped down the helmet while I paid at the counter. Allen got the first part right, it's just a rental. The part he failed to realize is that because it's a rental, the items SHOULD be cleaned. So this one star is specifically for Allen's lack of customer service skills. There's other places to rent skis and gear, so I'll just go there from now on. I assume that I'll get clean gear there. read more

I love this place!! Andre and Joe gave me the BEST wax I've ever had. I didn't even know wax could make THAT big of a difference, but these guys worked magic. On cat tracks, As a snowboarder, it can suck. But not with this wax! I was truly amazed. Service was good and easy, everything is very reasonably priced, as well. I stopped here with one of my friends who lives in Colorado to rent some gear to skiing in Vail. The shop was super quick to get everyone's gear out and the people working seemed genuinely interested in getting you what you want. The new demo stuff they had for rent was awesome! Side story, I took my suitcase out of my car to look for my wallet. Three hours later back in Colorado I realized I left it on the sidewalk. Luckily no one had taken it and it was brought inside. I didn't have any time to go back to the store to pick it up before my flight, but Scott, the manager offered to ship it to me! I would have been happy if he just slapped my shipping document on my bag, but he took the time to get a bunch of cardboard to protect it in transit. Great guy! read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would! The employees were dismissive, rude and did not answer questions. We had questions about our gear that were never answered. While trying on the equipment the employees were no help. Once on the mountain we learned that the boots they gave me were too worn to ride on. When we brought up the issue with the staff they did not seem to care about their mistake and refused to give me a refund for the gear that did not work. I would never recommend this company to anyone. The front desk lady was especially rude and full of excuses. Do not rent from here! Not only is their customer service absolutely horrible, the equipment sucked! I'm a descent boarder and love to go fast and carve. It was an icy day on the mountain, and I could not keep an edge. The board needed a major tune-up. When I rented in the morning, I selected "Goofy" for my board set-up. I didn't realize till I got to the mountain that the bindings were set up for "Regular". It was not to big of deal, but just on top of everything, it was not a good rental experience... read more

Then we realized the board had absolutely no edge and there were gouges out of the bottom. Of course this was after we got to the mountain so it was too late.
