We ordered the oxtail w/ rice & peas, collards, tropical grilled chicken w/ Mac n cheese & plantains. We also got the jerk wings, empanadas & johnny cake. The oxtail was the stand out dish but honestly everything was amazing! Very well seasoned & not just full of salt like other places we've tried. I went to this spot, as I was walking by to get some Chinese food. I didnt even know it was there, but the 'Thyme' play on words drew me in. It was mildy busy for dinner hours, but friendly staff was attentive to everyone there. I ordered the Jerk Chicken, Yuca Fries and sweet corn. All were delicious, cooked to near perfection. Chef came out to introduce himself, which tells me he takes pride in his work. The soft island music playlist was incredibly authentic. My favorite new "local" Caribbean spot. I started my meal with the seafood chowder which was flavorful and creamy with a little kick that builds. I then moved on to the Calypso fried grouper tacos which had a lighter, refreshing island flavor that was a perfect transition from the chowder. I started with a Caribbean sliced ground beef empanada. Really scrumptious I the ordered a plate of the Jerked ribs and chicken combo which came with rice and "peas". The "peas" are not green and instead they are red beans aka red beans and rice. I also had the Mac and cheese which is composed of ziti noodles with mixed shredded cheese. The ambiance is clean and bright. The service was polite. The food is very tasty and delicious to say the least. We ordered a variety of entrees that's served with your choice of sides: The oxtail is fall of the bone tender and has a rich taste, the coconut shrimp is perfection, and the dipping sauce that it's paired with is sweet and tasty as well. We ate at Island Thyme today and were very happy! The oxtail is the best in Orlando. Soft and full of flavor. The meat fell off the bone with the touch of a fork. My wife had the pork and beef tacos. They were so good. All of the ingredients were fresh. The girl working the counter was so nice and positive her great attitude rubs off on you. We eat here at least twice a month. Everything is great. The greens are the best Ive ever had (my Granny would slap me if she heard me say that, but its true!) Mac and cheese is perfect. The shrimp and grits are perfectly seasoned and the right consistency (my grit people know how important that is). All the chicken dishes are juicy and great. The only complaint is that they changed the shrimp they use for the mandelay bay shrimp and I liked the old one better. Still good, just not as good. When you think "Island" or "Caribbean", what sort of flavors do you expect? I expect spicy, rich, deep flavors. I expect bold. Based on the glowing reviews and the general effusive love of this place by neighborhood residents, that's *definitely* what I expected when we decided to finally try Island Thyme to bring home on a recent Saturday night after a long day. While I've been talking about wanting to try their oxtail for quite some time, I just really wasn't feeling it this night, and decided to go with the ribs with rice & black beans, and some tostones. My wife chose calypso fish tacos, black bean soup, and grilled corn. I was hit with immediate disappointment when I opened my styrofoam container to find platanos maduros instead of tostones. Now, I like maduros just fine, but I ordered, and was expecting tostones. I understand that if the plantains are too ripe, you just can't do tostones correctly, but at least tell me that ahead of time instead of sending me on my way thinking I'm getting tostones. I wish that was the only disappointment of the meal. The ribs were almost sickeningly sweet. This was pretty much the only flavor in anything in the entire set of meals. Everything else was completely bland and boring. The black bean soup was watery and flavorless. The rice and beans were completely non-descript. My wife didn't even finish her calypso tacos or corn. I ate most of the food because I paid for it, but I had to really force some of it down. I don't know if I just happened to come on a bad night when the normal chef was out, or if I just built up unrealistic expectations based on reviews and word of mouth, or maybe it really is just this bad normally - all I know is we have no interest in ever going back. read more
