I was refused service because I refused the retina scan which would be out of pocket. Today my husband had an appointment at 5.30 but the doctor called him in at 6.15, why? 45 minutes of waiting is not justified. They never apologized for the wait. I'm beyond furious right now. I will never bring my children (both wear glasses) or allow my husband to make another purchase here. I just discovered that 12 year old son has had the wrong prescription ALL YEAR. We were at his annual eye exam and I was shocked when he read the letters out of his left eye. They had to make the letters as large as possible and he still couldn't read out of that eye. I asked him and he said that eye has been blurry for a year (yes, I was upset that he had not told me) - he said he just "got used to it." Turns out his lens axis was FLIPPED!!! Completely wrong. This had happened once before with Visionworks but we caught it after a couple days because he kept complaining something was wrong. Luckily our eye doctor assured us there is no permanent damage to his eye or developmentally. Shame on me for going back after they messed up and giving them another chance. DON'T DO IT. read more

Your eye doctor was extremely rude and didn't even tell me how my eyes were doing, only was siting there bullying me how I admitted I sometimes fall asleep with my contacts in. Then I told her I hadn't seen an eye doctor in a long time ( I haven't had eye insurance ) and she shamed me for that too. She then tried to tell me she would refuse to give me contacts again??? All the workers were complaining I was inside being seen and were talking about how busy they were and just all wanted to go home. Not one of them asked if I needed glasses fitted or if I wanted to try any on. Even though I was walking around looking at them and trying them on. The guy wanted to start the exam before even asking if I was wearing contacts and needed to take them out. Was trying to get me to give her all my previous eye paperwork even tho I told her I didn't have it she was trying to get me to dig thru my phone to find it? When I left she told me my insurance covered contacts and then told me they didn't when it was time to pay. The eye doctor then booked me an appointment for a year out without asking me, for 6PM if this is how you run at 5 PM there is no way in hell I am coming back at 6 PM or back at all. I will go somewhere else from now on. I am truly shocked at this. I feel like I should have just walked into a Walmart eye doctor they would have actually been happy to see and help me. I think the pandemic has gotten to everyone here, as with the exception of a few staff members, the majority of the staff's attitudes have taken a turn for the worst. That being said, I do appreciate everything they are doing for the safety of their customers and staff by requiring appointments and limiting the number of people inside. They ask that you fill out all paperwork online to shorten your time in store, and you are also required to sign in prior to even entering the store, where your temperature is then taken. Bad news for those of us who don't have insurance: the price of an eye exam has gone from $108 to $148 due to the new eye imaging device that they have installed to ensure the safety of you and your doctor, and unfortunately, you are required to have the photos taken, whereas before, you could opt out of having your eyes dilated. They don't price match contacts, and my specific brand for my astigmatism runs about $55/box here vs $40.99 online, so that's a hard pass for me as well. There are other vision centers in the area who still offer price matching for those who do not have insurance or choose not to use their insurance (just an FYI). read more

I have been using this VisionWorks location for a few years, and they have changed policies for the worse. I showed up at the date and time of my appointment and was told I didn't have a confirmed appointment. The e-mail I read to the woman at the desk said that I was confirmed. And the forms I filled out ahead of time said I was confirmed. But "there is nothing I can do" was a cop out on the customer service front. Made worse by the fact that I had driven way out of my way, but came back to the Vernon Hills location because the service had historically been good. Lost customer. Their mask policy is nonsensical. It's Oct 2022. Big sign on the door requiring masks. Sign inside about masks. Employee immediately offers me one if I don't have one. I ask how I'm supposed to take photos of myself with potential frames on. She says I can lower the mask. So I spent 2 hours trying on glasses with my mask below my chin; absurd covid safety theater. All because having an eye doctor hidden somewhere in the back makes this a "healthcare setting"? My actual eye doctor elsewhere doesn't require masks. How long do they plan on keeping this up? You have to be able to see your entire face to shop for glasses and get them fitted! On the upside, the new location seems a little more upscale than when they were in the mall. Ever since their new location, the new eye doctor I had was AMAZING. I didn't like the "old" male doctor who acted like he "knew it all" years ago... My decisions of having both eyes the same in each lens was respected because I got headaches otherwise. I am still able to treat my astigmatism without needing two separate prescriptions in each eye. My contacts I just buy without astigmatism and I'm still fine though. Even if your eye prescription requires two different ones, you are allowed to get certain things you want. Don't be afraid to ask... Nice and clean store definitely. Everything well placed and organized! The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it still could have more of a "friendly" atmosphere, BUT it depends on who's working. The (petite) woman eye doctor was AMAZING and super kind, quick, and gentle. Vernon Hills location is now by Half Price Books. read more

I made an appointment for an eye exam a year in advance, and when I was reminded of it I had to reschedule. I made a new appointment for the same week and received a confirmation email, and when I showed up for my appointment I was told that I had no appointment and couldn't be seen because they were full. I was also told I could sit and wait for an opening, even though I showed the woman my confirmation email. Very disappointed with this experience, as I've been going for here years without any issue. Horrible customer service at the front desk. Attitudes with customers need to be checked. I didn't see a smile, hello or a willingness to help. Don't go there to waste your time because from all the reviews , this seems to be a habit. The doctor is very nice but he better get this fixed before they lose more customers. The 3 ladies were not courteous and felt like they were doing me a favor! Today, i had an incident where I came late and even though I knew I might not get my appnt, I still wanted to see if they would help me get in since my daughter had a red eye that needed to be checked by an eye doctor. The medical staff are ok but other associates will keep you away from this location. I had an appointment and due to a glitch in their system I got a call to reschedule it. When I showed up at the new time, which was the next day, it turned out it was slightly different than the time they had in their system, due to another glitch I think. I tried to explain this but one of the associates got really angry I was late, although I kept explaining this is what I got in an email and text from their system. I did go through with the eye test as I had blurry vision for a few days and wanted to check it out. But I am never coming back here again. Very bad customer service. read more

They have a vast selection of glasses and options via contact lenses. However, the o Lu issue I have with this business is, they do t really "adjust" your glasses. They aren't really trained in this matter at all. Private eye wear companies used to always excel at this. This is where big business fails by far. Had my first eye exam with Dr. Udesky. WORST EYE EXAM OF MY LIFE. He was nosy about my medications, shared personal stories he had about a certain medication (that I didn't even take!) and rushed through the most important part -- the exam. He didn't confirm that anything was clearer, he just showed me 2 blurry slides and when I'd say that both were blurry, he'd just continue. He talked and talked and never once listened to me. He was condescending, rude, and unprofessional. AND... he totally screwed up my prescription! Then I was told that I had to get computer AND reading glasses and they weren't the same Rx. What?? So I finally found two frames I liked (honestly not impressed with their brands and selection) and as we're going through my insurance and costs, I told the woman helping me that I did not feel at all confident in this prescription or the eye exam or doctor, and that I didn't feel comfortable moving forward. She suggested a different eye doctor and helped me make an appointment. I left feeling very upset. Fast forward a week, and I saw an optometrist that was very kind, patient, and thorough. The experience was 100x better than the first. This is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of one. I feel like she most likely got my prescription right, but I will have to wait until I get the glasses before I'll know for sure. Oh, and she told me that I did not need computer AND reading glasses and that it would be just one prescription for that. The sales associates made it pretty clear that they've had other unhappy patients come back for repeat eye exams because Dr. Udesky rushed them and got their prescription wrong. What is this guy doing still employed? He's the worst eye doctor!! He needs to be let go. I can't comment on the quality of the glasses (frames or lenses yet) or the fit, as I do not have them yet, but if they don't work out, then this could easily turn into a 1-star review. read more

Had an extremely harrowing experience with the Visionworks @ Hawthorn Mall. There have been poor customer handling, but being harassed by a Sales rep is something we had not even imagined. Visionworks you totally achieved the impossible! My wife wanted to get a pair of spectacles made and chose to go for a second pair too at 50% off as an offer for the same was going. I went ahead and paid for the same, while she was still looking at a few more frames. Soon after she told me that, she may not go for the second pair after all and we requested for the order to be cancelled. The reps there who had been helping us told that it was time to close the store and we could come in the next morning and cancel one pair and just go for the other one. When my wife went to Visionworks the next day at 10:00 AM, the then present sales rep did the following (I am including the questions she posed) - 1. You've been coming to our store for the third day now and after choosing the spectacles now you want to cancel. Why are you so indecisive 2. I've been observing that you took so long in choosing the frames. So much of our time has been wasted in this 3. Are you cancelling your order because it is expensive? Did you not have a budget in mind when you entered our store. People spend around USD 2k on their eyes and you're choosing to let go Finally, when my wife did say that she wants to cancel the whole order, another sequence of events started - 1. Out of total amount paid, about 40% would not be returned. And why? No apparent reason!! On inquiring for the same, the response was - "Do you REALLY want to know? Am not sure you would be able to understand the calculations" 2. My wife asked for the telling the details of itemized bills and the response was that -"Visionworks does not have the system to provide details of various items" (though they were there on the invoice and printed illegibly) 3. When my wife asked for just cancelling the order and we would talk to our insurer regarding the "non-reimbursable" charges of Visionworks, suddenly a cancellation-invoice with the complete refund initiated appeared out of thin air! Lord be praised! 4. Finally, my wife mentioned that she believed she should still pay the Co-pay for the eye exam and payed USD 10 in cash. On asking for the receipt of the same, it was again - "You really need a receipt for just USD 10?". How am I not surprised that Visionworks does not believe in paying receipts for cash transactions. When insisted upon, the sales rep wrote it on the printed invoice that USD 10 were received. 5. Finally, on being asked to be provided the eye exam reports, the response was that "I am not sure you understand how any of this works! DO YOU?". Finally, the rep shared half a page and ended with "Hope you have no more issues. Thank you." But that I guess it was a fair question, we really are a loss to understand "How does Visionwork works!". read more

I bought a pair of glasses here while visiting family. Then a week later, my glasses broke. I went to an affiliate store in my town. The sales person at Vernon Hills store was so rude! He was not helpful at all. Instead of taking responsibility of repairing pair of glasses that broke in a week, he just told me to go locate an affiliate store near my town that would take care of the problem. Had a good experience getting glasses there but nightmare experience trying to get my glasses fixed, which should not have broken in the first place. read more

I'm not entirely sure what was going on with the other reviewers... I have gotten 2 pairs of glasses here. I don't get vision insurance & yeah, they're expensive... I always get up sold on the lens upgrades. But the glasses last for years. I only got my second pair because my dog chewed the first :( usually I bring a friend to help select the frames as I am very indecisive. The lady who was helping me was extremely patient & actually chose my frame (I have a small head.) they look great! I get compliments all the time. My best friend made a comment on how I was always pushing up my glasses so I went in for an adjustment about a year later. (Today) They were more than happy to fix them for me, no questions asked. They said come in if I needed any other adjustments. As far as contacts go, I'd try america's best, but for glasses this is my place. Keep up the good work guys! read more

I must have great luck because I've never had any trouble with cost, appointments or service. They had a large selection of children's glasses so that made me happy. Hours are very helpful since I work full time and it's hard to find an office with night and weekend hours. My only bummer was I paid extra for scratch resistant lenses for my son and I doesn't seem like they were very scratch resistant so I wouldn't pay for that extra again. Otherwise I'm a happy customer and will be going in very soon for more glasses for my son! read more

I had my daughter's eye exam at another facility which we have been going to for years however, the selection of glasses isn't as large as vision works. We decided to stop into this Vernon Hills vision works with her prescription to order her a pair of glasses. First of all, it took the staff at least ten minutes to acknowledge we were there and needed assistance. Then the young lady grabbed some glasses for us, sat them on the desk and didn't come back. Another guy saw us standing there and asked if we needed help. Well yes, we'd like to order glasses. He asked if we had insurance, which we did and moved us to another station. Fast forward, we ordered glasses and he said we can pick up on the 30th of May. I asked if we would get a text or something if they came in earlier. He repeated pick up on the 30th. He was rude and arrogant. Well less than a week later (before the 30th) I got a text stating glasses were ready. We went in and my daughter said they weren't fitting nicely. They tried to adjust but no difference. Today her glasses are out of shape and much wider than her face (she's only worn them twice because it's been uncomfortable to do so). Definitely won't be going back there and will stick with our favorite smaller office for our exams and glasses where all patients matter! read more

I went there for a vision exam and possibly glasses. The eye exam seemed thorough and the doctor was able to answer my questions. While I was there, I was informed of a buy one get one free glasses special. To make a long story short I was quickly quoted about $300 and change price before I started looking. Once everything was added up, it was nearly $600. I stated this was too much and then magically one frame came down to $272. Uhhh, so it isn't buy one get one free if one pair is less than half of two pairs. They said they could give me a special promotional offer if I bought one frame while the BOGO deal was going on. I left with just the exam. Very frustrating and it felt like a bait and switch tactic. I will look elsewhere for glasses. (Also make sure they quote you an accurate price for the exam. Contact exam is extra and so it some other optional part of the exam which is another $12) read more

I have never been more disappointed while going for an eye exam in 18 years; I had to write a review about it. I easily was able to make an appointment online since I recently moved, and they took my insurance. When I got there, I was told I wasn't eligible for an exam and told to contact my insurance company. I called my insurance company on the spot who not only told me I was eligible, but asked why I was calling and not the company doing my exam. After I passed my phone to the employee, she worked it out with my insurance company. Shouldn't this have been done before I arrived? After that, my appointment was pushed back 30 minutes. When I finally got to do my exam, the doctor told me my left eye was significantly worse than my right (which I did suspect, however, the difference was greater than I anticipated). Finally, I came to pick up my glasses today and after trying them on, I knew immediately they were not the right prescription. I felt dizzy. I was told to try them out for a week and if they didn't get better, make a new appointment to meet the doctor. I'd just like to add after talking with corporate 3 times, they said the manager would call. The manager didn't call, but an associate did and he fed her information to tell me from the background. Additionally, it's been since November and I've yet to get contacts fitted from them (my last optometrist in CA fit them right the first time). After 2 times driving back and forth, I've given up on this excuse of an eye care place. Also, thanks for billing my insurance that YOU told me didn't offer vision insurance, but only eye product discounts. Now I'm dealing with insurance issues too. I went here for the second time for my son's eye exam. First appointment was for my eye exam and I noticed the poor service but didn't really bother me that much. The front house experience today was awful (because this time both my son and my mom were involved). First, we were greeted by the front desk. She had a very condescending manner and mean facial expressions like she hated working there. Then the technician took us to this open room where it had 2 computers. My mom were with us and happened to follow us, you know to check on her grandson. I did not read any sign it said two people only. The technician then (in a rude tone) told my mother that she could wait outside. Then my son was nervous about the eye machines and were little sweaty and told me "mommy, I am hot can I take my jacket off?" As he was taking his jacket off, the technician lady said "you running over all place didn't help huh?" Throughout out the whole exam, she was very rude and bossy towards my son.. At some point she said "you have to listen." He is 5 years old and plus she is not his teacher or his parent. The doctor though were very helpful and attentive. My son has trouble distinguishing his D and P; he would take extra time to tell them apart. In my opinion, she is great at her job and only because of her I am giving 2 stars. I don't know if their customer service was bad because I was using a coupon were I printed out from their website. They should put the following on their coupon in a fine line "EXPECT A HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR THE PRICE YOU ARE PAYING!" I have to bring my son again in 2 months, I wish I can skip the front staff and go straight to the optometrist. read more

I arrive for my appointment 15 min early a week later to be told " I don't have an appt .," " I'm not in the system " in spite of my appointment card in hand with date and time posted on it. & medical form in their system. Obviously a mistake was made by Visionworks to not click "save" when entering my appt. Mistakes occur, no problem. Reception desk offered NO APPOLOGY for this inconvenience; treated me with no eye contact , receptionist looking down to the floor and mumbling with behaviors as if she wished I'd disappear so she would not have to deal with my accidentally deleted appointment. If I wasn't insistent on my appointment, they would have allowed me to just walk out... Staff needs training on confident respectful take charge solution finding customer service at reception desk . I won't be returning due to being felt degraded and Visionworks not taking responsibility for an honest mistake on their part. ... 1 1/2 hr drive round trip for nothing. Went there for an eye exam. They told me they were in network with my insurance, but they weren't. They only "accepted my insurance". Well, so will just about anyone as out of network. After my exam it was more expensive than Target which claimed to not take my insurance at all. It also seemed less thorough than Target. Store was crowded, exam seemed rushed. I was never offered an opportunity to look through both lenses they "prescribed" for me at the same time in the exam. Left eye alone, right eye alone, here's your prescription, move on. Also prescribed me some eyelid cleaner, which was odd as I had no dryness complaints. Doctor told me I should come in for a dialation, after I already said I could do one that day and that I took their optional no dialation exam already. He really didn't have any idea what the prescreener had done before I walked into the room. Seemed more like an eye exam mill than a doctors office visit. They gave me a prescription for glasses, but I was so leery of the place by that point I just paid for my (overpriced) appointment and left. I'm going to be taking my prescription and comparing it to my old one from Target to make sure that it's even in the realm of possibility.. then I will probably order my lenses and frames from somewhere else. read more
