This is a hidden gem. If you live in the Bay Area, you must visit these smaller wineries that only make a few hundred cases each year. The wines are amazing and the surrounding area is so beautiful and peaceful away from the hustle bustle of tourists. The father daughter duo are great host! Abbie and her dad really gives their all to ensure everyone that stops by has the fullest experience at this winery. The winemaker moved to CA to make wind because he loves drinking them so why not learn to do it himself and live the dream! I really liked the Five Vines, which is a Bordeaux style grape. It tasted full and robust. So so so delicious that I could just drink wine all day and sit out in the sun. Heck, I would even work at this winery in exchange for free wine! read more

A true family owned operation trying to make it work amidst COVID. John, the owner, was wonderful to my family, and the welcoming committee included Pepper and Mr. Jones (a beautiful black lab and little cat). The house accommodates 10 very comfortably, with private bathrooms for each room (all of us San Franciscans were AMAZED), and we spent our days cooking in the huge chef's kitchen - with a wood pizza oven! - or playing games in the upper family room, playing badminton/corn hole, swimming in the pool with Pepper the water-loving-dog, walking the grounds, and sipping on wines (including Viszlay wines) and nearby Russian River Brewery beers. The Healdsburg farmer's market is close by, but we had such a pleasant stay here that we never got around to going! Their guesthouse is the absolute best place to have a Bay Area staycation. The wine tasting was nice, although less detailed and informative than we've had at other wineries, but we understood that was not John's normal role. We were delighted that we could call and get a same-day tasting appointment for 3 people at Viszlay. Abby (it's her family's winery) sat right down with us and gave us an hour of quality time! She was full of information and so interesting. The tasting fee is $20 per person but we bought 3 bottles so she waived all but 1 tasting fee. What a great hidden gem. Probably some of the best tasting wine I've ever had. Had the pleasure of sitting down with the owner John who educated my group and I with wonderful info and spoiled us with a delicious tasting. It was amazing to see the barrels with all the delicious wine and seeing the grapes grow right in front of your eyes. We definitely added this to our "must return" list and are excited to do so. We were totally mad at ourselves for not purchasing any wine prior to leaving, it was a long full day of tastings so we couldn't keep her eyes on the prize. The grape stomp is the best I've been to because it is just a small event attended by about a hundred people and only four do the one minute contest at a time. So fun. The owners John and daughter Abby and the rest of the staff are the best hosts. The very affordable price for the grape stomp and lunch makes me want to come back next year. However, I wish they would serve better food. It doesn't have to be expensive, just something homemade, made from scratch, and delicious. read more

Darling family-owned winery. We reserved a wine tasting session and had a mix of barrel tasting and bottle tasting (because of the weekend). Both Abby and John are incredibly down to earth and spoke with us the entire time. Their tasting room is also their cellar, so the inside area is small, however they have a beautiful outdoor area with seating. It was a breath of fresh air to experience a winery that wasn't on a more commercialized estate. We thoroughly enjoyed! read more

My wife and I are never coming back to this place. We have visited approximately 25 wineries in the past year, and have traveled rather extensively for over 30 years.. We have never had such horrible customer service from a winery, bar, restaurant, hotel, online or retail vendor, airline, car rental office, train or ship. We arrived promptly for our scheduled tasting and sat down. The woman in charge gave us two tastes of chardonnay, but when she saw we had brought food, said that she wouldn't bring more wine until we finished eating. No problem--we could understand her rationale. We finished eating in about 15 minutes, but didn't drink most of the wine because it tasted like it was turning. By now there were only two other tables of guests, with a total of perhaps 12 people. She spent some time pouring for them, but in fact most of her time was occupying in chatting. Now, we can understand that. Guest have questions. It's also pleasant to have your server be sociable. However, her back was to us the whole time. She never looked in our direction, let alone came over to see how the tasting was going for us. There was a gentleman who remained standing (also with his back to us) who appeared to be visiting primarily with one of the tables. We don't know if he was a guest or employee, but it seemed odd that a guest would remain standing. To repeat, our server NEVER even looked in our direction. So we sat there with our undrinkable wine for 20+ minutes after we finished eating. There weren't that many guests, nor in fact did they require many pours. This was an unbelievable experience. My wife got up after a total of 35+ minutes and went inside the building, where our server had now moved and was chatting with someone else. She told the woman that we could see she was having a very busy day, that we were leaving, and (to avoid a scene) we would come back some other time. I am sharing this information with our wine club members--a total of 30+ individuals--so that they will be aware of the level of service they might expect at this winery. No stars! read more

Came here for the Wine & Food Affair event last weekend. We were actually served by the owner, who was very polite and nice. Their vineyard is gorgeous! That is probably the best thing about the winery. We tried several of their wines, but none of them really stood out for me. Usually I'll find at least 1 wine that I like, but unfortunately not this time. I would recommend stopping here for the view of the vineyard and perhaps you may like their wines, as everyone has different tastes and palates. read more

We visited this winery earlier this week as part of a tour. I absolutely loved tasting the wines while sitting at an outdoor table, surrounded by the vines. In this case, the zinfandel grapes. Our tasting was led by the owner's daughter who has been with the winery for a few months. John, the owner, was wandering around in the background and stopped by to say "hello". This is a very small and unique site and I'm so glad it was included on our tour. It's such a contrast to the bigger, more corporate sites. Came with a group and was greeted with some odd comments about our outfit choices (like that matters?). the entire tasting was awkward and Abby made comments about how we weren't able to make the walk around the vineyards because of our shoes and how it was too "strenuous"... our friend was celebrating her bachelorette and she was really offended by all the comments. Abby even said to the bride "it looks like you're wearing a Halloween costume". I'm not sure if it was a joke, but either way it was not a friendly environment. I would suggest to come here and not expect great service but the wine is good! read more

This is a rebuttal to Lynn and Lanisa's one star review below. Grow up! I was there trying to enjoy Barrel Tasting. A limo pulls up and half the girls were drunk! Not all of them. They were loud and ruining the experience for all the others. The owner asked if you would quiet down. When that didn't work he said he may have to ask you to leave. Why? You may not realize it but the wineries can not serve alcohol to those that are intoxicated. It is against the law even if you have a driver. *****I found the owners to be very nice, educational and will definitely be back.***** read more

We took a couple pictures with the basketball hoop and then got rudely yelled at for "acting like assholes". I felt completely disrespected. He could have easily told us not to take pictures but he chose otherwise. We went to another winery after that was so much better and didn't act like they had a stick up their butts. read more

We ended up at Viszlay at the last minute due to a change of plans with our Sonoma tour group. What a happy turn of events! We had a fun and unique experience at this tiny winery. Our group of 8 was hosted by the owner. We sat outside at a patio table under an umbrella. It was a gorgeous, sunny day, and we were surrounded by the grape vines (great place for photos). John explained how he got interested in the wine business, eventually buying the vineyard just a few years ago. It's an interesting contrast to the larger corporate wineries and even the smaller, family-owned places. We tried two whites and 3 reds. The first was a prosecco which is uncommon to find in CA wine country. It was a little dry for my tastes, but everyone else loved it. All the reds were wonderful: a blend, malbec and pinot noir. I couldn't decide which to take home, so my husband bought the pinot and red blend. Two people in our group even joined the wine club. I would love to come back when we have more time to chat with the owner and tour the winemaking facility. This would be a great place to visit during the crush. read more

Came here on barrel tasting day because the other people we were with said they'd check in here since the place I checked in was full, and glad we did. The owner was really nice as were the other people who worked here, the owner called the other winery I had checked in at and said he'll check me in so we could all start at the same place. Wine was great too, I only tried the barrel samples but they were all very tasty, and what I like is they offer futures at 20-30% off depending on how much you buy which is what I like to do. I'm cool getting a good discount if I don't get the wine for a year, but only if it's good and the discount is substantial like it is here. Hands down one of the best experiences we had while touring vineyards in Healdsburg. I was with my family and we had never really done a true wine tasting before. John's vineyard was the first stop on our Segway tour (which is definitely the way to see wine country!). John was extremely knowledgable, friendly, and down to earth. He was so chatty with us while we sampled wine and answered my numerous questions. He was even getting a kick out of us because we literally loved every wine we sampled (coming from the East Coast we were really only accustomed to cheap super market wine). I loved the fact that John's vineyard was a small 10-acre plot and the wine could only be purchased there or through his wine club. I wish he lived closer to us and I also wish MA wasn't such a pain in the you-know-what about shipping wine. I will certainly be keeping John in mind if I ever need wine for a function in the future. Bottom line: if you're in Healdsburg don't leave without stopping by to see John at Viszlay! read more

A pleasant surprise, not the typical experience... it is much more educational! John is a one man show who is investing in his dream of wine. Well he knows his stuff! It was really great to be able to see the process and learn from an expert. He bought it three years ago or so and has a wide range of grapes. Tasting with the owner was fun and the wine was delicious; it was hard to choose which to bring home. Visited Viszlay Vineyards during the 2019 Sonoma Valley Barrel tasting weekend. Tasted some great wines poured by knowledgeable people. Nothing was rushed and wine was excellent. Highlight of visit was talking with John Viszlay! Although busy, he spent time talking like we were old friends! (We do share some Pittsburgh roots and love the Steelers!) I highly recommend a visit as well as their wines. We will be back, but in the meantime, we shipped a case to Florida to keep the memories fresh!! read more

I dropped by Viszlay Vineyard with a group of 4 other friends last Sunday - it was a lovely visit which all of us enjoyed! My friend had called to make a reservation in advance; although we arrived 30 minutes earlier, we were warmly greeted and welcomed by the hosts, John and Abby (father-daughter team). Despite the fact that they had other guests with them, they made us feel welcomed and prepared chairs for us. We did the wine and chocolate pairing - we tasted four different wines (chardonnay, zinfandel, rose zinfandel and port) each paired with four different chocolates - the taste and flavours were amazing! I am not knowledgeable about wines and liked how Abby used terms which we could understand. The four different wines was part of the package we had, but Abby had kindly allowed us to try their special "Five Vines", a mixture of five different wines which tasted very nice. I liked the Zinfandel, port and Five Vines, as I love red wines in general. I really liked how Abby shared about how different wines go well with the different chocolates -- it was also amazing that she did so much trial and error all on her own in order to arrive at the right pairings! :) Abby and John were so warm and friendly and shared with us their personal stories about how the vineyard was started, their most popular wines, and answered a variety of questions which the group of us had about their wines/vineyard/how the wines were made by her father. After the wine tasting, Abby brought us out to the vineyard and even helpfully took group pictures for us. It was a great pleasure to meet Abby and John at their lovely vineyard. read more

Rudest service ever from a winery I've been. I'm shocked since this is on the more laid-back Sonoma side vs. the more commercial Napa side. We came here on a tour bus with a bachelorette party in the group. The owner's daughter Abby was our host, and she was super sweet. However, since we were in a big group, it was harder to hear, so as we were tying to quiet the group down, John, the owner came up to our entire group and basically said that if we didn't keep our voices down, he'd kick us out. First of all, the group was not overly rowdy - we were all having a great time, which is what people come out to wine country for; and he had absolutely NO right to act this way to paying customers.
