I haven't been here in years and my first experience was not a good one. This one however was different. I was told by a nearby restaurant that the bread came from Vitales and it was that good that when I saw it, I decided to stop for a loaf. Staff were busy but not unfriendly and attentive to ensure they grabbed all that I had asked for from the dessert cases. I got a few cookies and I expected a heavy shortbread type cookie from my first but it was light and airy and delicious. I asked about a piece of cake and the staff described what was in it and stated that it was a good choice... I have yet to try it, but I love pistachios so I am looking forward to it :) Overall this was a pleasant experience and again what I have eaten of what we bought was absolutely delicious so I can't imagine that I won't go back. Located in " The Hill" district this is the real deal when it comes to Italian bakeries. Everything is sold by the pound and what a selection of cookies! Expect a line but it moves quickly and I enjoyed the opportunity to chat with other customers and hear their favorites. Now let me tell you about the Cannoli, the BEST I've ever had!! No trip to the hill is complete without a visit to Vitale's for something sweet! I have visited a few times in the past and always ask for a cannoli since they have a delicious recipe for theirs. I have ordered some of the Italian cookies in the past and I have also tried some of their other pastries which are always divine! The other day, I picked up a cannoli and a slice of tiramisu with plans to bring them home to share with the hubby. I was feeling tempted to get a cream horn and a few other items, but knew that I could pick up those items the next time I visit. During a busy time, they move quick and take orders fast. It can seem a bit rushed at times, but that's only to keep the line moving. Just make sure you know what you want when it is your turn. read more

Amazing cookies that they are very proud of - hint: very expensive. I will say they are very authentic and just plain delicious. Service is alright. Not overly friend, but definitely efficient. Inside isn't much to look at. Nothing fancy, nothing gross. read more

It felt like home in so many ways.. they had struffoli, what looked to be a variation of Sfogliatella.. I enjoyed their take on a cannoli. It was different but it was still very good!!! Tasty bakery in the hill with a large variety of options!! Gooey butter cookie was divine and was ordered as parting gifts for a wedding. Quick and friendly service. This is my 2nd time coming into Vitale's since moving here on The Hill for 5 years. The Service was the exact same as last time we were not greeted with a Hello or a Smile once entering or placing our order. I felt like it was an inconvenience to the lady serving us, I was with My 2 year old Daughter, My Mom. Once checking out she dropped our pastry, and thankfully got us a new one without a problem. What I thought was interesting was a regular customer walked in once we were paying, and she greeted her with a smile while starting a personal conversation. I just would expect a more welcoming atmosphere especially in our neighborhood. After a wonderful lunch, we decided to go to a local bakery for sweets and bread. Upon entering the empty store, we were not greeted by the two workers who were engaged in their own conversation for our entire visit. So we were on our own. We chose a loaf of Italian bread, some various cookies(maybe 10 total) a couple of cannolis and a bag of breadsticks. A surprising $43 later, we left feeling a big letdown...but the real letdown was when we started eating what we bought. The cannolis were practically tasteless, the gooey butter cookies were basically soft butter cookies and no "gooey". The breadsticks had little to no flavor and seemed to be old. The rest of the cookies and bread were equally non-descript. Big mistake. read more

This was a place where I went on a food tour. They had lots of baked goods to choose from including breads, cookies, cannoli, etc. There was a large variety of all Italian sweets with something for everybody. I had a traditional cannoli. It was a ricotta cheese filing. There was a cherry part of the filing as well. This was an okay tasting cannoli. The filing to shell ratio was ideal, but it was just decent to me. The shell was crispy and appeared very fresh, but the filing was just a little off. Will I go back? I would head back. read more

I had some business in the area and decided I was way too close to The Hill to not stop for some tasty treats. So I decided on a classic Italian Bakery that is well known, and has been around for generations. Vitale's is a step back in time type of space. When I walked in, the sights of large cases of Italian baked goods along with the heavenly aroma of freshly baked bread and cookies immediately gave me feelings of comfort and nostalgia. The staff is super nice and I enjoyed talking with them for a few minutes. For my to-go treats I got: cannoli, tiramisu, and biscotti. Holy cannoli it was all so good! Regrets? Yes, there were two. The bakery is beautiful. Service was top notch! We walked out with so many cookies. Everything was dry and tasteless. I used to think the southern style (buttermilk biscuit base) strawberry shortcake was my favorite dessert until I came to Vitale's. Theirs is hands down now my fave. Fresh strawberry purée between layers of chiffon cake that's iced with a whipped, delectable icing, and I am one happy lady eating cake on the run in my car (but safely, of course). I ate several samplings of cookies as well and really liked the anise flavor as well as the biscotti. The cookies were all light and would be perfect with a cup of coffee, though I chose mine to accompany the cake... I bought a bag of frozen toasted raviolis and pizza sauce for a quick meal option at home, so will update review once I've stopped eating dessert for dinner and power on the air fryer. read more

I actually really loved the things in this place! I don't know much about Italian baked goods but my Italian friend did and she was naming a good chunk of the things that I bought so I felt really accomplished. The tiramisu was so creamy and soft, I really could have eaten the whole thing in a couple bites if I didn't stop myself haha My favorite little treat was the vanilla florentine. It had some sweetness but also some spice to it (spice in a sense of cinnamon or nutmeg, not spicy) Would recommend coming here! The prices are pretty good! read more

I wish I could give this place five stars, but their sfogliatelle is a complete crapshoot. When it's made correctly, it's fantastic, but I've had two occasions now where I've brought it home and it's like hard scrambled eggs in side. Unfortunately from the outside there's no way to tell until you buy it and try to eat it. They have a nice selection and the rest of their desert items that my family has tried they've enjoyed, but I go there explicitly for the sfogliatelle, although likely not anymore. read more

So I was in search of a great Gooey Butter Cake and planned to buy one at Missouri Baking Company only to learn they were closed today. Happily,I recalled that Vitale's Bakery was nearby and recalled the yummy breads and cookies from decades ago when I taught a young Vitale boy in First grade. Delighted that while Vitale's didn't have Gooey Butter cake they had both regular and chocolate gooey butter cookies (yum!). I selected a great variety of nut free Italian cookies as well as a loaf of their long loved cinnamon bread. My husband picked out a cheesecake and a few other treats to take home as well. read more

I am somewhat late in my assessment as well as biased...I am a Vitale descendant and so therefore cannot be trusted to not be partial. However, if it was terrible, I would be honest...fortunately for us all, this is not the case here. I received a box of assorted Vitale cookies from my long time friend, Patricia Viviano, for Christmas while residing in New Orleans 2016-2017. Yes. That is a long time to wait to craft a review. I did feel it my duty to say how pleased I was for the gift. I was not fortunate enough to have grown up with my Sicilian family and missed out on so many wonderful things. Every chance I get to connect with my heritage, either through food or meeting relatives, is something I treasure. How does this place do it? Wonderful breads, incredible cookies and other baked sweets, at a ridiculously low price!! The sheer variety of freshly-baked cookies, cannoli, tiramisu, shortcakes ... Don't forget to check out their freezer cases also. If we were heading straight home we woulda loaded up a small boxful and not cooked the rest of this week! This is one of my favorite bakeries! They have an excellent variety of pastries that can't be found at most typical bakeries. They had some samples out to taste before we ordered, which was great. The cannoli had a great crunchy pastry with a sweet, creamy filling. They were the perfect amount of sweet without being overly sweet. The baklava log was well-soaked in honey and had a vey generous amount of walnut filling; it was the best baklava I have ever had! read more
