Nice little spot with simple but tasty food. The food wasn't magnificent, but it was good and left me full and satisfied. Had the nacho supreme appetizer which wasn't very supreme in size or ingredients. I could have skipped them to save room for the chimichanga and quesadilla combo I ordered which came with rice and beans. The beef wasn't as tender as it could have been but wasn't bad. My wife and I used to frequent the Viva Juan in Centerport which unfortunately closed. It was nice to see there was one close to home. Just like the other Viva Juan, food was amazing. We went on a Saturday for lunch so the place wasn't at all busy so service was quick. I had the beef quesadilla and my wife had the chicken fajitas, both of which were very flavorful and tasty. This is a restaurant is located in a strip mall. The parking was plentiful. The restaurant was very clean with a colorful flare. The staff was very friendly. We made a reservation, but for a rainy Sunday night, wasn't necessary. The restaurant did get busy as the night went on. They have maybe 20 tables and looks like they have some kind of music setup. Our waiter Daniel was wonderful, very knowledgeable and attentive. The food was delicious. We had chips and salsa on the table. The four of us shared the nachos deluxe, this was delicious, not huge like some places, but the taste was excellent and that's what matters. Our dinners were all different, but each was delicious. I had a quesadilla and it was very good. The white sangria was also a huge hit. Wished we lived closer, I would be back. Viva Juan is a local Mexican eatery that has several locations throughout the island that serves exceptional Latin food to it's clients. In the Selden location the bar scene very lively. Locals enjoy the food as well as the karaoke on Saturdays. The service is fast attentive and the managers are super nice people. My favorite item on their menu is their burritos. So let me start by saying that I've been coming here for years and they were originally an amazing place. However, for the past year they have significantly declined. They are getting one star because after last night I WILL NEVER go back to this place. I placed my usual taco dinner order and everything was wrong. The meat was not the finely ground flavorful meat I once knew. They also put giant slices of raw peppers in my tacos. The rice was crunchy and hard. The beans were cold and tasted like they've been sitting there for hours. When I called to ask what was going on I was asked what I expected them to do. I asked for a refund and explained I could not come back because I had a night class. I was then told to take my food out of the garbage and save it to bring it back TOMORROW!!! Are they kidding me? I went there with my girlfriend and her group of friends from her job, there was about 15 of us. We ordered food, drinks and dessert. Basically the whole menu. During our time there the staff and Management were extremely rude to us. We were not just sitting there ordering water and a app. We rang up a large bill. When we asked for a glass of water, we would have to ask two to three times and then they would bring it out I'm a wine glass, WTF. Also the waiter was complaining that we had a spilt up the bill. I do not eat anything that is derived from animals, yes I am vegan. I always tell the wait staff that I do not eat anything with animals and am not an ass about it, I always look at the menu and ask if I can have..... but with out meat or dairy, the wait staff says no problem they will make sure my request is met. Service was wondefful. Food not even close to sub par. So tonight I ordered a veggie fajita no cheese, no sour cream, what I got was some carrots, about a whole onion a few stirps of celery and 3 pieces of bell pepper, 3 tortillas, refried beans, guacamole, pico de gallo and rice. I asked if I could get more bell peppers, in which I did and they tasted funny. Nothing had any flavor, it was flat, I have had authentic mexican food and this was far from authentic. I will definitely not go back. The guy with the wannabe beard/goatee who runs the Karaoke station apparently got a hold of a Spotify Premium account and let the power go to his head making groups wait for depressing songs. I wish I could give 3 1/2 stars for this review, because the viva Juan chimichanga was actually really good! 4 star good but I have only been here twice and the other time I got a chicken burrito that was decent at best. By no means was it bad, just not a place that I would hurry back to. The chimichanga though was serious goodness, and the 2 for 1 deal (up to 10.95) on Mondays will get me back here. Lunch on a Sunday afternoon. 3 adults and 3 kids. 4 were from another country and had difficulty understanding the menu. Cannot recall waiters name but he was extremely patient in explaining the menu. Knew the ingredients like he was the chef. Very Professional,likeable and attentive to service. He brought out fresh chips and salsa. The meals I can recall: taco salad dinner, chicken quesadilla and enchilada burrito. Very generous portions. Loved the place! I wanted to take my Dad out for lunch to something different and we were not disappointed. Generous portions of the food, my father ordered the chicken with rice and I had ordered the fajitas combo (chicken, steak, and shrimp). Have now been to this location twice, and there will NOT be a third! Both times we went with a large group and both times the staff and management were rude and cold. They seemed bothered by us and even argumentative at one point! Food was subpar at best, not worth the abuse from management when he fought with us over a water that tasted soapy (that we had to ask for 3 times!). We asked for a replacement and commented on the rudeness of the waiter only to be told that the server was overwhelmed with our group "not for nothing there is 14 in your party!" And "there couldn't be soap in this water, but I GUESS I'll get you another." Really? A simple apology and a water would have made the whole situation better... My boyfriend and I came for an early dinner on a Friday night. First thing we noticed was the huge crowd at the bar, seemed like the group of middle aged people were there celebrating something. It was our first time so I don't know if it is always that LOUD. Food came out in less than 10 minutes and while it wasn't anything special it all tasted fresh and was your typical Mexican food, which is what we wanted. We went for happy hour tonight and were very disappointed...the 2 for 1 margaritas were only for house tequila, so we ordered a pitcher with Don Julio paying almost $50, which would have been fine if there was any alcohol...the bartender never came over to check on us, we had to ask for the complimentary nachos and had to call over someone else to order food...it was blistering hot in the bar and very uncomfortable...don't think we will be coming back. read more

I have been coming to Viva Juan for over 9 years and it has always been one of my top Mexican restaurants. Recently I have noticed a major change in quality. Tonight's meal confirmed that I will not be returning. My husband and I will sometimes try new items on the menu, but for the most part we stick with getting the Viva Juan Chimichanga. Tonight we got that and the enchilada suizas, and they were so disappointing. The chimichanga wasn't crispy, the shrimp seemed like it came from a bag of frozen shrimp, and it didn't have the saucy quality that it normally has. The enchiladas were so bland. The cheese has definitely changed as well which has always been one of my favorite parts. The waiter never checked on us to see how our meal was and we got one small glass of water with no refills for the whole meal. At the end we saw on the bill that they charged extra to use our credit card which they never used to do in the past as well. THIS IS NOT AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD! They use mozzarella cheese on everything, on the beans, and in the enchiladas. My 6 six year old wouldn't even eat the cheeseburger because it was served to her medium rare. When we said something to them, they said this is how they serve the food, and have been serving it for 20 years. We didn't touch our food, and when we got the bill it was 70.00, really over priced for Mexican food. The mild salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce, and the chips were stale. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a drunk man trying to speak to our children, and it scared them a little. The manager was a bi*** and didn't ever try to make things right, we paid the full bill walked out and left 5 full plates on the table. My husband and I frequent Viva Juan's whenever we remember to make a reservation. It can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights but by no means do not let that deter you. The food is great. I always get the chicken fajitas and they never disappoint. Also, the sangria is delicious. We love the atmosphere, it's loud and people are doing shots at their tables, and brave souls sing karaoke Saturday nights...it is just a really fun place! As a work group we have gone to Viva Juans II in Selden twice for Karaoke Night. Both times the group was large, got rounds of shots, food, and drinks. While the food and the alcohol were ok, the service, was not. Both times the manager and wait staff treated us like a burden. You know, a large group who is running up a huge tab on a Friday night is bad for business. We also kept singing, dancing, going with the whole mood of the loud, Friday Night atmosphere. Apparently, this is annoying to them. It was really disappointing. I know large parties take up space and whatnot, but we were spending money - and I mean $50-$100 per person in 4 hours money.
