I love this little tea shop! I hadn't been in Frederick in almost 10 years and thankfully voilà is still there! I was home visiting my folks for Thanksgiving . MaryJane sold me one of my first teas - I was primarily a coffee drinker. Coming in, it's a bit of a tourist trap--in particular their tea sets. When I asked about where they come from and how they were made, they asked me if I was a competitor and said that they can't disclose that information. That makes me not trust about where they actually source their teas and teapots. For myself, it's important to know if the teapot I end up using for my tea is of good quality. The pushback I got from just asking is just weird. Very weird. I had already bought the tea that I wanted when I had that interaction. After that, I don't think I'll be coming back. That being said they have reasonably priced tea with their smallest being 2 oz. The black tea that I ended up getting smelled pretty good and is a very mellow brew. read more

The place itself is small, and the walls have shelves of different canisters of teas with handwritten labels. There are also magnetic containers in which you pull so you can sniff to your heart's desire - however, it seems as if the loose leaf blends in those need some replacing, as they were just manhandled way too much by the public and lost most of its scent and had a mildew-y odor to them. Yikes! If you're curious about a certain tea from the larger canister, you can ask one of the staff members to locate one of the magnetic containers for you to sniff. I personally was not impressed with the place - the variety of tea blends didn't seem to be anything unique or special, compared to the other specialty tea shops in- and outside of Frederick. Also, there didn't seem to be much organization or order in terms of the different types/categories of teas, especially if you wanted to peruse at your own leisure. There were some samplings where they feature 3 flavors, offered in both 'hot' and in 'cold' temperature - I thought that this was a nice added touch, as some prefer their teas warm or cold; also, you are able to notice that the flavors are pronounced differently at certain temperature. There is an area in the back where you can get your chosen 'tea mix' made into a beverage and some baked goods that are delivered by a local bakery for purchasing, but there aren't any seating areas for you to enjoy them. The staff members themselves were also unable to answer questions or offer recommendations, variations, and/or alternatives. A variety of loose teas that are freshly made. A woman named Anne waited on us and explained the process of making tea. There are beautiful fine china tea cups and more modern cups that infuse the tea and deliver it directly into the tea cup. I really liked the vanilla lemon tea. They also serve scones and cookies. The turtle scone we bought was scrumptious and delicious. The staff was nice, but did not allow us to take pictures inside the shop. I love tea. And so I love this tea shop. What a wonderful addition to Downtown Frederick's "High Street". When you walk in it can all be a bit overwhelming at first, but you will be immediately calmed by the soothing sounds of classic French artists singing sultry tunes. The owner is very nice and very helpful. She can help you find whatever you're looking for. She can even help you find what you're not looking for... What brings people to Voila other than the snappy name? The friendly and readily available help who take ample time to explain everything and anything you'd like to know about tea. The reasonable prices are the cherry on top and the wide selection, design of store, and general #FrederickQuaintness, earns Voila 5 stars. 3 tea samples at the front are served in fully glass tea pots set over "tea" lights (no pun intended) are changed out readily. Some of the tea is a benefit for a community member who went through tragedy. I can't remember the exact name, but they have a whole line designed to raise support for the charity. I love the Voila signature tea so much that I bought a pound bag of it for myself. I realize that this is going to last a long time because under doctor's orders, I'm only allowed one cup of caffeinated tea per day. But, the smell of this tea both dry and brewed is so intoxicating that it really makes that little hour I have for myself every morning my favorite part of my day.From opening the sealed canister to the empty cup of the tea I've finished, the scents are nirvana. I don't sweeten it or add anything to it, just by itself it's amazing. The shop is great, it's a lovely world-class experience, not unlike an old fashioned apothecary shop. I would imagine that 100 years ago, if Voila had existed then, it would have looked and felt much the same. It gives you that feeling of Frederick's history and charm, in one little iconic shop. You can try teas, and browse a wonderful assortment of tea making supplies. MaryJean is very nice and very knowledgeable about tea. She puts together these blends from her travels and offers them to us. You can really feel the love she has for this craft. I'm a person that just doesn't like coffee, so I feel blessed to have a shop right in my own town that I can bond with to take me beyond the old wasteful and unremarkable teabag experience to something this elevated and special with delicious loose teas. Now to see if she has the Voila flavor in a decaf version, because I'd drink it all day long. If she doesn't, I know she'll recommend something I'd love almost as much. Since the pandemic, the shop is set up mostly as a distribution location, because it's small and not conducive to social distancing if it gets crowded. But fear not, you can still go in and sample things if you don't know what to get. I do regret that they no longer use those little metal cans, but that's an easy workaround. I ordered the pound of the Voila blend I did buy online. That was probably the fastest delivery I ever received. I had my tea in one day! I think that was just timing, but man, I was impressed! That's because MJ and I worked via email to get the order just right. Went in to purchase Christmas gifts last month and ended up leaving with tea and a turtle scone for myself. Oops! Seriously though, I've been a handful of times and always had a pleasant experience. The whole shop smells amazing when you walk in, and they provide tasty samples of tea. This is absolutely one of our favorite places in Frederick. I actually started going here when I would visit my husband before moving to Frederick myself. I fell in love with their teas and now have quite a collection(my husband helps, he has quite a few of his own as well hah). The owner and her SO are both very friendly and have wonderful suggestions if you're looking for new teas. On top of having an amazing tea collection, I was so excited to see that they are showcasing local potters!!! First things first: this is a tea shop where you go to buy loose leaf tea. This is not a tea house. On to my personal impressions. I'm an avid tea drinker. Lets get that straight. I don't mean the berry flavored, frou frou that's so popular. I'm talking real tea. Lapsang Souchong, black and orange pekoe, Irish, English jet black teas. Herbal teas sometimes, but we actually still have high tea at our house. Until I stumbled upon this tiny shop, I had to drive one hour to Salamander's in Middleburg, Virginia to get real tea. Here's the scoop. Bulk bins of loose leaf on the wall - don't mess with these as they are kept tightly closed to keep the leaves fresh. Both side walls have sections with metallic strips. On these strips are two ounce metal containers of tea leaves for your smelling pleasure. Simply choose which ones you like, tell the attendant, and they will get the tea from the bulk containers for you. After you've finished your container, you can return it for a refill. Good deal! Here's where it's not so good. In the true sense of the word "tea," (including all black, white, and green) there are roughly twenty. In the "I'm trying to learn to like tea" version, there are roughly fifty or so. Granted, some of the herbal blends are great. I just can't get past the idea of chocolate caramel tea. It's not tea! It's not a bad thing for people who like those flavors but I expected many more exotic dark real tea blends. Lets give equal amount of choices. Before anybody gets their knickers all bound up, I understand a lot of people enjoy those highly flavored concoctions steeped in boiling water and then called tea. I'm just not one of them. I'm a purist with food and drink. Now, if you can't do caffeine you'll very happy to know that they have several versions that contain absolutely no caffeine. Herbal teas and herbal blends. Snaps for this! Also, if you're new to the concept of tea, they sell the necessary accoutrements such as trays, pot, strainers, etc. I bought four different teas on my first trip. One being white pearls which are tiny buds of the plant for perfect white tea. I also bought "sock it to me" a nice dark blend of Assam, Qu-Hao, and two golden leaf teas. Aside from the owner who definitely knows her stuff, no one that works here seems to actually know anything about tea. They're sweet and cheery, but don't ask any complicated questions or you will be met with blank stares. I was looking for an Earl Grey tea and the girl helping me showed me their classic one. I responded with, "It's a little strong. Do you have any Earl Greys with a little less bergamot?" She looked at me as though I had asked her to translate the Magna Carta into Spanish with a quill on parchment. Earl Grey is LITERALLY defined as black tea enhanced with bergamot (orange) oils, so to work in a tea shop and not know what I was referencing shows a serious lack of knowledge about your product. If you don't know the basics, you're never going to sell me on your chocolate caramel nonsense. The prices are ok, but the teas themselves aren't spectacular. The tins they come in don't have tight fitting lids, so unless you get a bag, there's a chance your tin will open and spill everywhere. They're definitely one step up from Teavana, but I'm going to continue to patron Tealuxe of Boston's online store. read more

We've gone back to Voila a number of times - pretty much any time we're in/near Frederick. I have come to realize that the owner's actually very knowledgeable about her products. Even though the emphasis seems to be on flavored teas, there are gems to be found in amongst the classic leaf as well. First, they're one of the few retail stores I've known in the area to regularly carry Jin Xuan (milk oolong), which is a fantastic semi-roasted green tea that brews up with a buttery aroma and creamy flavor on the palate. I've also bought a very nice unsmoked Russian Caravan blend there that was a regular in rotation until the tin was empty. Today, I stopped in to ask about some Assam, since I've been looking to replace an "old friend" that wasn't imported to the states for almost five years. While they didn't have what I was looking for, the owner did brew me up a sample cup of a different estate's leaf which I found I enjoyed as well. So, I ended up bringing home a 1/4 lb. of that. So, yeah the prices are a little higher. But the service and attention to detail have been excellent, and I've come to the conclusion that it makes up for the couple of dollars more per purchase. If you want to explore the possibilities of tea, you'd be in better hands here than at, say, Teavana. Voila cares about the tea, not just about your cash. Oh - quick tip. Not all of the unflavored tea varietals they stock are in sample tins on the magnet boards. If you can't find what you want, ask. Or if you like one of the samples, ask what else they have that's similar. read more

The staff is incredibly knowledgable and very good at recommending tea varieties based on vague descriptions of what you (the customer) have a taste for! Another neat feature of this store is that they offer hot (or iced) tea by the cup. This has helped my wife and I on several occassions find new teas that we like, and new teas we did not like, without having to purchase an entire tin of said tea. Again, the staff is great. Viola is a small shop in the very center of Frederick City that sells loose tea and a few related tea brewing items, like strainers and cups. Occasionally there are free tea tastings. My wife and I are tea aficionados and have shopped there a few times and have always been disappointed by the poor quality of the teas and the very high prices. The tea is almost always stale - musty and old tasting. Choices are limited to approximately 100 black or green blends for the most part. Service has always been slow, considering there are usually few customers in the cramped little store area. This place has my business for the rest of my time in Frederick. I bought an in-mug infuser and when I got home and opened it, the infuser was dinged up and had questionable particles in the mesh. I walked back and explained this to one of the employees and I was directed to the front where the owner was very apologetic and understanding and found one that was better.
