I went to them in the old location on NE 82nd, and while they seemed expensive, they were close to my home and seemed to know what they were doing. Then the shop moved to Halsey street. Was the business sold? The customer service was abysmal! The owner told me to drop it off on a Monday and he would take a look. By the end of Tuesday, he had not even looked at it and wasn't sure when he would be able to get to it. I also talked to him about purchasing a car on the lot and he was SO condescending. It also felt like he was playing games with me. I didn't stick around after that. I found a great shop that oozes professionalism, is much better priced. I'm not sure why this shop doesn't have a 100% 5 star rating. I've been going to them for about 4 years and they've always provided great service. In fact, the front end on my '92 240 starting shaking at 50+ mph and I took it to two mechanics and they couldn't figure it out. I took it to Swede One and they diagnosed it as bad tires. Bad tires? What the?? I never heard of that, but I took it in to Les Schwab anyway to have the tires replaced. Voila! The problem was solved. They have also done other work for me, all of it great with no problems. If you own an older Volvo, you should definitely give Swede One a try! read more

Warren is great. I have a 2001 C70 and the top decided to stop working properly. He told me what it would cost to diagnose. What he quoted was reasonable and far less than the dealer. Then, when it turned out to be a simpler repair than originally quoted he didn't take the opportunity to charge me more anyway. He fixed it and then gave me good instructions on how to keep it in working order. It is so hard to find an honest mechanic you can trust. I have been taking my 2006 Volvo XC90 to Swede One since I bought it. I have always gotten accurate estimates, good repairs, solid advice on how to maintain my older model, and helpful service. They loaned me their shop car for a couple days when I had a faulty yaw sensor. Volvo's are tricky sometimes, and Warren has always given it to me straight and has been really great every time, as have the mechanics and owner, who's name escapes me. I love this mechanic. We've taken our '91 740 Turbo to them many times, they always have clear communication, low prices, and give excellent advice. Yesterday Dave showed us around the lot and gave us advice on our next car purchase, even though he knows we arent planning to buy for a while (but do plan to upgrade in the next year or so, whenever our 30 year old baby goes on her way). Crystal at the front is always super helpful and they really work with you as people-not someone to mine $$$ via extra services and overpriced parts like other auto shops I've been to in town. Worst experience ever. I went in 3 different times with 3-4 problems. They would fix one problem. My car started acting worse after they did work & I actually had something hanging with 3 bolts missing right after leaving the last time. All of those times I had a coolant light on. Asked them to fix it every time & they told me it was just the light that kept coming on. Nothing was wrong. NOT TRUE. Now I am leaking coolant & may have blown a head gasket. These guys are fantastic... we purchased a used older model Cross Country wagon this weekend, and the next day (Sunday) it died... I was SO upset. Not only did they take it in the next morning (Monday) fix what we thought was the issue, they did it quickly and efficiently. Then when the check engine light came on again later that evening, they took it in again and repaired the final issue! At no charge to us... even though it was a Used "As-Is" vehicle. Overall very happy with this place. They are kind and helpful, explain all their work, call to follow-up and so forth. They are also reasonably priced. The only drawback is the location. Work they have done in the past has been OK but costly. This time they replaced a pump in the differential but the problem persists. After driving 20 about miles I parked in my driveway and after a short time discovered a small pool of oil on the concrete under the differential. With no way to check the fluid level myself and assuming all the fluid may have drained out in twenty miles, I called them. They gave me the "option" of driving the car in or having it towed. Why would I drive a car that may not have fluid in the differential? I got a song and dance about the fluid being overflow left on the chassis. Then I was required to pay for the towing! What happened to customer satisfaction? Later that day they called to tell me they were reversing the charges for towing. read more

I came here because my usual Volvo shop, Alamo, was booked up. I regret this decision immensely. I needed a checkup for my car as I'm going on a long road trip soon and wanted to make sure everything was still running okay. I called ahead and made an appointment for 8:00 am, and when I came in, I was told everything would take one to two hours. It is past 12:00 pm and I'm still here. It took them 3 hours to decide that I needed a new battery and water pump despite being the literal first person here in the shop this morning (with an appointment!). An hour ago I was told it would be another 20 minutes to replace my battery. No word on that yet. The waiting room is frigid; if I make it out of here alive I will be surprised. There's no coffee in the coffee pot. I wish to god I never came here. If you need repairs for your Volvo, go to Alamo. For the love of god don't come to Swede One. read more

I brought my '93 Volvo sedan to this shop three different times when it started constantly stalling out, a problem that another shop later immediately diagnosed as a malfunctioning fuel pump relay. Because they were recommended to me by a retired Volvo mechanic with a great reputation, I kept believing that they were just on the verge of diagnosing the problem, and kept shelling out for repairs which ended up costing hundreds of dollars. They were blasé about the repeated repairs and inconvenience and never once offered to discount their services, even after multiple failures to fix the car. Even though I was constantly stalling out, they claimed that they couldn't reproduce the problem in the shop or with a road test. After all those attempts, and the other shop's ability to immediately diagnose and fix the problem, I feel they just didn't try hard enough. I accept that diagnostics can be tricky, especially on my particular model, but there's no excuse for the lack of concern on their end. After the third attempt failed, they never followed up with me again to find out what happened. By contrast, my current shop (VOL-Tech), who fixed this problem and several since, have called me each and every time afterwards to make sure everything was going well and that I was satisfied. Avoid unless you have a lot of money and patience to burn. read more

2 years ago my Volvo S40 2001 was repaired at Swede One Autoworkers. They changed a gasket and changed the timing belt because oil was leaking on it. I paid $1500 for the repairs. This year, in August, I brought my car to them again, because it was dying in reverse. They didn't fix the problem. They returned the car to me and said that they couldn't get it to die. I paid another $140 for nothing, because the didn't fix it. The engine was sounding worse than before, and it was still dying in reverse. After a few days the check engine was on. I decided to bring the car back to them to see if now that the check engine was actually on, they would actually fix it. When they were repairing it, I had a conversation with them on the phone. They told me that the part that they changed 2 years ago failed. They said they never seen it happening before. They also said that they needed to change the timing belt again, but that I didn't have to pay for it, because it was still in warranty. When I asked how much it would cost, they said probably around $100, but they ended up charging around $324 for the repair, because they had to put in new sealants. I asked to change my windshield nozzle on the passenger side, but they actually told me that they changed the one on the driver side because it was broken (?). The nozzle was spraying all on a side, so my windshield situation was worse than before. 20 days later, the check engine was on again and they changed a valve for less than $300. They changed both of the windshield nozzles and charged me for both. I was charged two times for one of the nozzles. 2-3 days later the check engine was on again. That's when I decided to take it somewhere else. The other car repair had to do again what they did. They didn't fix it right, and there was a oil lick from under the head of the engine that was never fixed. I ended up having to pay another $1000 because they never really fixed it. I gave them a lot of money for other repairs; this is how they treat a loyal customer. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. read more

In July I was in need of a new car. As much as I loved my 1989 Toyota Camry, whom I affectionately refer to as Isaac, finally reached his golden years I knew my frequentl commute between Portland and Ashland was eventually going to end in disaster. I knew I wanted a nice car - something respectable in the work place but not terribly over the top while at school. Something like a Volvo or a Saab seemed to fit the bill. On a lark I decided to check out the cars they had on the lot. I ogled over the S60s and S80s, but when I laid my eyes on the decidedly non-box shape of the S40 (still listed as sold on their site as of this posting) I was sold. The salesman, Jim, cannot deserve enough praise for all his help. I work in Tigard and live on Mt. Scott in SE Portland. I have a long commute and my weekends are precious. Jim stayed after work for me on several occasions so I could test drive the car, get opinions from different family members, and get my finances in order. Jim even went so-far as to hold the car for me without payment as he could tell how excited I was about the prospect of getting a new car. The negotiation process involved an impressively low amount of BS. Jim and I worked out a more affordable price, took care of some minor issues on the vehicle, and even gave me a checkup call on two occasions after purchase. The owner Dave went to great lengths to ensure I was satisfied with my purchase. In August my grandfather also made a purchase from Swede One - the Green Volvo S70 listed as sold. I mention this because my grandfather is a very, very particular man with intimate knowledge of cars and has very little patience for bullshit. No institution is perfect. In full disclosure, after purchase my car required an alignment and part replacement which Swede One covered. If you're in the market for a used car of Swedish flavor, but don't want to gamble on the more seedy parts of 82nd Avenue I suggest you go here. **UPDATE 10/9/2014** I recently learned that I was missing a timing cover bolt, an unnecessary but helpful little bolt designed to properly anchor the plastic housing over the timing belt, was missing during some routine maintenance. I verified the proper part number at a Volvo Dealer here in Seattle (Ravenna Volvo proved very helpful), and contacted Dave directly at Swede One. Dave and I spoke briefly and the missing bolt was shipped to me in Seattle at no cost. I add this update because Swede One made a point of telling me they replaced the timing belt prior to purchase which is pretty nice to know on an older, high mileage vehicle. I was a bit concerned at the bolt's absence, but after a brief and to-the-point conversation with Dave the issue was resolved. Even after buying the car a year later, I appreciate getting something so minor taken care of without a hassle or blame-game tactics I've experienced with mechanics in past. read more

This was the worst mechanic experience I have ever had. Go to Alamo automotive instead. Please go to Alamo automotive instead, I just can't reiterate that enough. Two weeks after having spent $3500 on maintenance and repairs, on a beautiful Sunday morning, the car decided to not start. I should mention that the car had never had trouble starting in the 4 years that I have had it, but now suddenly it happened. I took the car back to swede one and I was quoted $1399 for a fuel pump job. I was told on the phone that this was an 8 hour job, and that is why the estimate was so high. Being that I needed the car fixed, I agreed at 2pm on Monday for them to do the job. I was told then that they would have to order the part that needed to be ordered and would be at the shop first thing in the morning, but that the car should be ready by the end of the next day, Tuesday. To my surprise I got a call at around 11 am on Tuesday saying that the car was ready for me to pick up. Being a math teacher, I quickly realized that the job could not have possibly taken more than 6 hours. That is, even if they started working on the car immediately after I hung up the phone on monday until closing (5pm) and then started on it immediately on Tuesday at 8am and finished right before they called me, that would have only added up to 6 hours, at most. When bringing that up when trying to pick up the car, the entire staff was incredibly dismissive and unwilling to work with me and adjust the total. Again, this is after having spent 3500 just two weeks before, for a whopping total of almost 5k on a car that is barely worth that. I am incredible upset and surprised that they would not adjust the price for two hours of labor that were not used. I was told by another guy that this is a flat rate shop. So, if a job takes less than the time quoted, they will still charge the full amount. I was not told this in advance. I did not sign anything saying that I would pay for unused labor hours if the job was done sooner. But most of all, I am shocked that this awful shop would treat a customer that spent 5k on maintenance at their shop like this. Jim, one of the guys there actually started yelling at me and telling me to pay my bill and get out of there and take it to court. I just can't believe that they would do this. Please consider all the other options before bringing your car to swede one. They will overly charge you and possibly throw parts at you that you don't need to make their ends meet. Like the cooling fan relay that I was told would fix my ac issues when I spent the original 3500. Turns out that it didn't fix anything. And I was charged for the cooling fan relay and the labor for it. When I asked about it they said very casually: "oh yeah, you probably need a new compressor" totaling another 1000 bucks if done. Thanks swede one for having zero consideration toward your customers, for charging for unnecessary parts, and for blatantly and explicitly overcharging in labor. And Dave, I can't wait to see what kind of half ass response you're going to come up with. I've seen how rude you are to people in person, and I have read what you respond to people online. I would never again in my right mind take my Volvo here again. The guys at Alamo are great, honest, competent, and have awesome customer service skills, unlike the people working at swede one. read more

As a second experience with Swede One, this visit was an improvement in customer service which included thorough discussion of the issues they found with my car. This time the troubles with my car were accurately noted. (Previously, an incomplete note of car trouble cost me a lot more than expected, over a week of car rental expenses, and a trip to a specialty garage.) The recent major issue seems to be fixed and I was invited to come back with any issues. A minor issue is not fixed, so I will go back to have it looked at. Beware of this establishment. They are totally incompetent. Brought our 2007 XC90 in for check engine light on, $1500 later, problem persists. The code called for camshaft sensor problems. They replaced them, air mass sensor, updated software ( we found out later Volvo dealer will do it for free). By the next day, check engine light was back on. The car has been there three tmes for the same problem. They offered to diagnose it again for free but backed away from that offer with some lame excuses. These guys are totally unreliable. They even offered to replace my coolants that are only a few months old. I tried to save money and support the small local guys by not using the dealer but will be bringing my car there instead. Update: dealer fixed for about $350, including brake switch. read more

Terrible place!!! They sold me a car and within a year everything, and I mean everything, had broken. I took it in and they told me the cost to fix it was the same amount as what I had paid for it a year before! They explained tht a part was all rusted out and was very expensive to fix. Go somewhere else. I went to SwedeOne looking for a Volvo and found one that looked good. The salesman, Ted, misrepresented the soundness of the vehicle. We had to pry to get any information on what he claimed was a pristine car for its age. Turns out it had been in a wreck and had been fixed with used parts from a "junk yard," according to my trusted, independent Volvo mechanic. The radiator was broken, the core support cracked; an axle inner joint was loose and one window inoperable. If you want a car-buying experience where you are given good, honest information and told of the car's issues upfront, go elsewhere. Swede One Saved My Car When I left SF, CA in 2007, I drove to PDX in my 1996 960 wagon. I figured that this would be her last voyage. I had a mechanic in the bay area that kept finding issue after issue with her and she was costing me close to $1000 every other month. I figured she was a lemon and that was that. In a last ditch effort to save her, I went to Swede One. They gave me a straight and honest assessment and with a few minor low cost repairs, I was on my way. She is still my everyday car. Dave and his team at Swede One are terrific! We recently needed some work done before embarking on a driving trip to northern Idaho. One of the needs was for new rear brake pads and rotors. Upon inspection, they determined that the rotors were not the typical style installed on Volvos sold in the U.S., but rather what would be found on cars intended for use in Sweden. (Didn't realize there would be a difference). After a lot of searching, a set of rotors that would fit our car was found and installed - no charge for the extra time involved. It seems to me the folks at Swede One always go the extra mile when it comes to excellent customer service and automotive service. They make it work! read more

Stay Away from Swede One! This is the 1 and only review I've written on Yelp and couldn't allow my voice not to be heard. I thought I would be safe by purchasing a used Volvo based on their past reputation and certified mechanics on hand. I bought a 91' 740 Sedan that was on "consignment" which drove well and had slight body damage. It was my foolish mistake to not have it looked at by a professional. I brought it to a reputable body shop 4 days after purchasing. They said it should've never been sold and was a complete lemon. The frame had been heavily impacted and was only worth parts. I immediately brought the car back to Swede One knowing I didn't have any legal recourse to return the Volvo but to explain that I had been duped and couldn't understand how their mechanics could have overlooked this when "going through" the car to sell. The salesman didn't care. He said that the money had been exchanged it was too late and he was sorry that a body professional had a "misguided opinion" of the car. Well, I'm still trying to fix that car 4 months later. Just brought it in to get new tires and the service shop said they'd never seen alignment so far out on a car that they in fact couldn't completely correct it. It sits in our garage because it drips water into the car when raining. I cannot believe that these people continue to do business in Portland. read more

I have been saving up a list of things to have fixed on my Volvo for about a year. Too long, I know, but I finally brought it in today after being referred here by a fellow Volvo owner. In addition to an oil change, they fixed a headlight, cleared a bunch of codes due to a rear ending, fixed an issue with my rear windshield wiper, replaced a lost lug nut, and I got a new fuel tank cover. All this in one day and it cost me barely over $100. This is by far the best interaction I've ever had with a mechanic. I am a new customer for life! read more

I bought a used Volvo without having it checked out by a mechanic (dumb, I know). The first shop I took it to post-purchase said major repairs needed to be done and I should donate the car to charity. Swede One took me under the car and showed me what needed to be repaired right away, what didn't need to be repaired and, of the necessary repairs, what could wait. Bottom line is the repairs cost me much less than I anticipated and now I love my new/used car. read more
