Been here twice in the past year or two. Always professional, thoughtful, and they do great work. Last time they fit me into their busy schedule, which was much appreciated. I notice some complaints here about their prices. I always call around to three or four places to get an estimate before choosing a mechanic. Seem to be nice people but not the best experience. Here's mine. I'm in town on a trip and Got in a small accident late on a Thursday night. Looked for a mechanic near where I was staying and found Deans. So I had my truck towed there after hours without an appointment. Hoped they would be able to squeeze me in on Friday. Can't really blame them but I didn't feel like they really even tried. I happen to stop by late that night ( like 7 pm on a Friday night) and they still had guys working. But they could find a way to squeeze me in for what should have been a 2 hour job (more on that in a minute). So I had to wait around all weekend. They were able to look at it Monday and called to tell me that it would cost $800. It seemed high but what am I going to do, have it towed someplace else? So I agreed to her them do the work. They got the job done and had me on my way that evening. Great! But it ended up costing even more than they originally quoted me. Not much but enough. About $850 But...My cruise control stopped working. So before I went and blamed them, I called my GMC dealer to ask them 1. If the price was acceptable and 2. Why my cruise control stopped working. Turns out that the dealership would have charged me less than $600 and that's THE DEALERSHIP Then I find out that they didn't even check or clear the engine codes. That's why me cruise control stopped working. Come on!!! You can't even disconnect the battery without throwing a code these days. Why would you not check it? In the end they're nice guys but definitely not your best option. Compared to these guys, you might as well take it to the dealer. read more

This is really two reviews. Until last week: I've needed genuine expertise to service my unconventional Delica vehicle. Dean's is the go-to for this in the Portland area. If you have a 1993 right-hand drive diesel van, you need a shop that knows these vehicles, and embraces the challenge of keeping them in shape. I have been a booster of Dean's, for three reasons. One, I trust other people's endorsement, and have found the level of expertise is high. Two, there are not a lot of options for Delica service. Three, what has been the most important to me: All of my interactions with folks at the office window, or with the mechanics, or on the phone, have been exceptional. I remember talking to a mechanic, an expert on BMWs, that just thought vintage vans were cool, and that he loved working on them. I asked questions about some of the quirky aspects of Delicas, and for sure they were not always answered, but I felt like it was OK to bring up anything, and expect a thoughtful answer. There was mutual respect, and a sense of humor. Last week: The front office person was guarded and chilly and apparently uninterested in my effort to understand mechanical issues. Possibly he'd had a bad day. Nowhere near enough for me to write a negative review. But then: He reported that one of my house batteries was bad. OK, which one do I need to replace? Reluctantly, he returned to the mechanic to find out. He then reported that it was not a house battery, but a starter battery that was bad. A mistake like that is pretty important - I might have replaced a good house battery (expense), and failed to replace a bad starter battery (potentially stranded). I expressed some annoyance - not at the fact of the mistake (forgivable), but at the attitude, which was hostile and defensive. This person blamed the mechanic, which strikes me as unfair. And even still: not enough to write a negative review, except: this person decided that my concern over his mistake was reason to ban me from further service. He said that work on curious vehicles like mine was "a courtesy," and that Dean's did not really need that kind of work, or me as a customer. I wanted to raise this with the owner. He indicated that he IS the owner (or an owner). Disappointing to me because previous correspondence with the owners was delightful. Summary: I love Dean's, but wonder whether management is moving in an unfortunate direction. Typically, if a business owner is hostile to customers, other business competencies will suffer. read more

I will never go back to Dean's after they damaged my car! I have a 1990 Bronco that I took to Dean's when I first bought it in February to get an overall check up. The service was great, the woman who worked up front was awesome and very helpful. I was happy to find a local shop to take my older car to and was glad to take my car back. This May I took my Bronco back to get a quote on getting my clutch looked at and while Dean's had my car the the tech took it for a test drive without latching the hood down. The hood flipped up and was heavily dented and the hinges snapped. They replaced the hinges but a new guys who was working up front said there was nothing they could do about the hood being dented. That was my first red flag. While they were replacing the hinges I received a text from the shop asking if I had the keys to the Bronco and that they had misplaced them. Second red flag. At this point I had no faith in Dean's and was pissed off to say the least about what was happening while they had my car. I'm am a car person and come from a family of car guys but im a 26 year old girl and I felt that the guy upfront thought he could use that for his advantage. I was so over the whole situation at Dean's that I just wanted my car back and to have them stop touching it incase something else went wrong. When I went to pick it up the new guys told me to go and look at but he wouldn't come out to talk about what happened. After all of that he made sure I knew I wouldn't be paying for the hinges that they broke and that he was giving me a discount on the exam of the clutch and charged me $50. The quote they gave me was $1400 to redo my whole clutch and I didn't think it need a complete rebuild. I have never been to a car place do such a drastic 180 with their customer service. I pick up my car and took it to Northwest Auto Works and they said the clutch needed a $200 part replaced and now my clutch is good as new. I am someone who looks for not just great work in my repair shop but good car people who care and know what they are doing. I felt that way about Dean's after my first trip there but after this second time I will never take any of my cars to Dean's and told the people that I suggested Dean's to that its not worth the risk. If you are thinking about going to Dean's I would reconsider. read more

The thing about Dean that you need to know is that he's honestly really interested in why something isn't working, and he's interested in the act of trouble-shooting. It's the kind of creative problem-solving that I associate with the more brilliant people I know, and it's super refreshing from a mechanic. I'm more accustomed to mechanics jumping to conclusions and quoting wild prices, and talking to me like I'm a fool. When I asked what was wrong with my car/scooter when Dean worked on them, Dean showed me the part that was broken and explained how he had come to that conclusion, and why. I was like, oh yeah, these are component parts that work together and your explanation totally makes sense. Horrible experience. Gave a run down of the work to the girl at the reception at 10am. I made sure that she wrote up everything in the work order. She promised a call back if there is any questions. At 5pm I called and I was told that they haven't got to it yet and shop closes at 5pm I took the day off to get this done since it's my work vehicle and my livelihood. I picked up the truck and took it to another mechanic next morning and it was solved it 30mins. When I picked up my truck, Dean said I'm not gonna charge you for anything. I wish i could have shown him that it cost me $800 for my downtime. He may be okay to rip off Hippies with VW, but I ain't none of that. read more

Had just purchased a 1975 VW bus in Washington and upon driving her home to SF, she was givin out. We sought a haven at Dean's Car Care that fit us in that day, addressed all our issues, gave us a great walk though of what to look out for and lil things to look at replacing as needed. I own a small construction company, and we use our box truck for work on a daily basis. Scheduling time off in order to have it serviced is a major business cost because it means we are unable to work on those days. On 8/20, I scheduled an appointment with Dean's Car Care for 8/27. We discussed the specific problem, the make, model and body style of the truck, and some preliminary cost estimates. On the morning of the 27th, I called in to confirm the appointment. Several minutes later, I got a call back saying they had to cancel the appointment because my truck would not fit in their bay. This is information they got at the time we scheduled the appointment, and that they should have told me at the time. The lost revenue from this fiasco is approximately $1200 -- a cost that is going to hit both me and my employees in our pocketbooks for an extremely simple and large oversight. Honest and straight up team at Deans. I am very picky (and skeptical) when it comes to mechanics. Many are lazy and crooked. At Deans they won't try and sell you on what you don't need and can be counted on to do what's needed properly - and follow up if need be. They worked in an emergency repair on my partners Subaru on short notice (yes, bring donuts) and did a great job with major engine work on my Toyota pickup for far less than what other shops were quoting. They will keep an older vehicle on the road and not give you second-rate service just because your car isn't shiny. Thought I was at a dead end trying to get my 42 year old British Sports car through the DEQ. Although she is old enough to smoke according to Oregon laws she was not allowed to exhale. Deans saw the challenge and never backed down. From the first Phone call with Harriet to putting the new tags on my toy it was nothing less than a most pleasant experience. Dean and his guys worked so hard on my van. Other mechanics couldn't diagnose it or wouldn't even touch it. When I called them, they got me in right away. They were so nice and accommodating with my schedule. Before taking it on, he gave me several options and was very upfront about the costs and possible outcomes. Dean is a great, honest, and friendly mechanic. He works on all makes and models and the best part is, he is mobile! He will come to your home/office/etc. to repair you car. He is very affordable and I would highly recommend him. Our car would not start and was stuck in our garage. He came out to our home, checked the car out, gave me an estimate, spent over an hour looking at it, and charged me only $30!! You can't beat that price anywhere. Dean is great. He knows everything there is to know about cars, his rates are fair, and best of all, he comes to you! He has an entire shop inside a VW van. I had just left town to start a 4000 mile road trip when I lost 4th gear in my Vanagon. I turned around and drove back to Portland in 3rd. I started calling around to see if I could get the problem checked out, but it was Saturday morning so all I was getting was a bunch of messages saying call back Monday morning. I got in touch with Dean, and within a day he had located a good used transmission. It required some modification to get it to fit my van, but he fabricated a new mount and modified the shift linkage, and I was back on the road Tuesday morning at a VERY reasonable price, all things considered. I re-located to Portland from the Philly area in 2015 and needed to find a mechanic for my 2014 VW Jetta GLI that I had just driven across country and plan to keep for as long as possible. Tried two other shops before I found Dean's, where I know I'll always go from here on out. Plus I've recommended them to two other car owner friends and now, very highly, to you. The people at Dean's are thorough, knowledgeable, and so very easy to work with, and they charge a very reasonable fee for their careful, detailed attention to my car. When I took it in for its regular service last week, they had limited their waiting room to one person at a time and wiped it all down before each new customer. After the covid, I plan to go back to my practice of walking up to the Dekum St. area during the wait, where there are great coffee shops, markets, restaurants and a park to pass the time. Earlier this week my tire pressure warning light came on. I took my car to the gas station and filled the tires in an effort to correct the problem. Turns out I over inflated one of my tires. Dean himself helped me to inflate each of my tires to the proper PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) including the spare in my trunk, which was at a much lower pressure than it should have been.
