I recently experienced my first accident after 26 years of driving. My head was spinning as I had absolutely no idea how to navigate insurance or choose a trusted location for my car repairs. I found Mackin's in a Google search. They had good reviews and they were one of the providers who were approved by the insurance company, so I decided to give them a try and I'm so glad I did. John helped me from start to finish. I spoke with him about my concerns that the insurance company was going to total my practically flawless and barely used car simply because it was a 2003 and explained to him that this was the first car I had owned that didn't already come with body damage or other problems. I had worked so hard at my 3 jobs to save enough to buy it less than a year ago and the one good car I had ever had was then side swiped by a guy who wasn't paying attention on a one way road. I was super bummed and it was just confirmation of that feeling that is always chasing me - the few things that I have after grinding away at 3 jobs every week can be taken away in a second and all of that hard work will have been for nothing. Just another unjust reality of our current state of affairs for the average working class person. John understood my concerns and assured me that he would do everything he could to keep the cost down. I had no choice but to trust him and he did not disappoint. It took a couple of months to get my car in for an appointment (not a problem, it still worked) and about 2.5 weeks to get it fixed, so when I arrived to pick it up, I was relieved that it looked so amazing. I didn't walk away feeling like all of that time waiting ended in disappointment and more stress. John followed through on his promise to do all he could to keep the cost down and it is because of his efforts that I was able to walk away with my car without the insurance company totaling it. He managed to deliver what looks to be A+ results after scouring for quality used parts (under warranty!) and also kindly applying as many discounts as he could along the way to make sure I drove away with my car. I'm not sure I can adequately express the impacts that his efforts have on my life - from avoiding the mental anguish of dealing with an unjust insurance system to saving me from another tireless car search in this insane economy to restoring a little bit of hope for humanity. Simply put, I absolutely would not have found another car with the value that my current car has, and that would have really put a choke hold on my life in a multitude of ways. I can't fail to mention that John also made the process practically effortless for me by arranging for an agent from Enterprise Rental Cars to pick me up from Mackin's and take me to my rental car. I was also able to leave my rental car with Mackin's when I arrived today to pick up my Toyota. From beginning to end, they handled all of the details and dealt with the insurance company. I felt like every effort was made to make this experience as positive and painless as it could have been - they even sent updates via text to let me know where my car was in the process. My new 2020 Forester Sport had its front end smashed in from a hit-and-run while parked in front of my house one day at like 4:30am. I was pretty heartbroken because I really love this car and I've never had a new car before, so seeing it all beat up was really sad. My USAA insurance let me choose the local auto body repair shop, and when I saw that Mackin's up in Kenton was nearby and was a Subaru Certified location, I chose them. The reviews here seemed really great, and as an owner of a repair shop myself, I could look at the high-star and low-star reviews and tell that the bad ratings were distinct outliers. Because I had body and mechanical damage, the repair took about two weeks. They kept me apprised of the turnaround estimate frequently via text message, and responded to my questions promptly. I just got my car back yesterday, and I am SERIOUSLY impressed. The work on my car appears to be flawless. Like, for real, so far it's looking and driving as good as new. It's very clear that real attention to detail was put into the repair effort. I worked with Mike directly though most of this process and he was a fantastic help - informative, competent, chill, and relatable. The rest of the staff that I encountered made me feel like they're a solid team, and it seemed like everyone was pretty happy to be there. That says a lot about a business. I reeeeeeally hope I won't need any auto body work done in the future, but if I do I'll be coming straight to these folks without any hesitation whatsoever. Couldn't be happier with the quality of work, but also the customer service! It wasn't just one person being friendly and respectful, it was the entire staff. Johnathon Star kept me updated on the progress of my repair as well as worked with the other drivers insurance company. I literally barely had to talk with them. I was so disappointed of the ridiculous service and the damage they caused to my car. Tape I can't get off in a seam, when they put the dirt panel back on they tapped it in with a stew-driver or something.... Dented and a huge part cracked off instead of order the part they putties it with this black goo that with this heat is coming off on to my hand when I grab to close my door. Of course I didn't notice for a bit but this heat made me notice the horrible damage they caused. They didn't put a top coat so the black paint looks worse then when I took it in. I could not be happier with the service I received here. In December a large tree branch fell on my car. I was sure the insurance company would total it, but they didn't. The whole windshield and roof had to be replaced and pretty much the whole car was repainted. It was a huge job and I am so happy to say that my car looked brand new when I got it back, and shiny with it's beautiful new paint job. The customer service was great. I felt like I didn't need to worry at all about the insurance, and they kept me well informed of the progress on the car since it was such a big job. Made a stupid mistake and dented my boyfriend's new Chevy Colorado. Mackins was awesome. The price was reasonable and fair. The work was flawless and they even let me park the truck there a few extra days after the repairs were completed as I was out of town. Everyone seems to have nightmare stories about auto body shops. Car in the shop, can't get it back, totally inconvenient, yadda yadda. Its been years since I've had to take my car to an auto body shop but somehow, I continue to luck out. I chose Mackin's because they are close to my house and am so glad I did. They are truly excellent - great service and they go out of their way to make it hassle free for the customer. Need a rental, they asked? Yep. They arranged the car rental place to meet me there -- and as I pulled in, there was Enterprise waiting with my rental. No hubbaloo in the office -- they had all the info they needed and I signed a few releases and I was off. I was there for a brief five minutes - if that! A few days later, a nice gent called me to tell me my car would be ready the following day. I said I'd drop off the rental and find my way there -- "Oh no- we'll have Enterprise pick up the car from here". I pulled up, left the rental car sitting and was free of any additional work on my end. Awesome. I found my car in perfect shape and cleaned inside and out. It was gleaming. Walked in, signed a few papers and was on my way. Most pleasant auto body experience ever! Mackin's is highly recommended. read more

I love these guys. I got in a wreck in my girlfriend's mom's car that was owned by her dad. They are a Farmer's approved repair place so as soon as I took in the car I didn't have to do anything. They worked with the insurance company to get everything taken care of without any additional effort from me. The Mom and Dad forgot about it as soon as they saw the car. When we got the car back it was detailed inside and out. They had neatly placed all of my GF's stuff in the trunk in bags. And they painted and touched up a few unrelated dings for free. Erin was super nice and kept me up to date. I got a hood replaced, bumper replaced, some attachment clips replaced, and a few body panels painted. I've since taken my car here for oil changes. When I first did it they replaced a damaged drain plug that Jiffy Lube on Broadway had stripped, but called me first to make sure I was ok with the additional $4. Very nice guys. And they didn't lie to me like Jiffy Lube on Broadway and tell me my coolant was low or that my radiator cap doesn't hold pressure. Fuck Jiffy Lube on Broadway. All hail Mackin's. read more

I am so disappointed in Mackin's. I've used them several times in the past with excellent results. Not so this time. My car was vandalized and Safeco sent me to Mackin's to get an estimate. I went and agreed to having them do the work. All I needed was a new rear passenger window and an antenna. The total estimated time to do the job was 3 hours. I dropped the car off at 10:30am and got a call in the early afternoon informing me my car would not be ready til the following day because their technician broke my window clips and and new ones were on order. I asked them to get me a rental car since they couldn't deliver the car in the time frame they promised. Scott (a Mackin's mgr?) refused. Nice. So I shelled out money for a rental car. So much for customer service. I picked up the car the following day and the used glass they installed was dirty and had two rock chips on it. Funny thing is I inspected the glass with Mackin's employee Hector prior to the installation and didn't see any defects. My hunch is they damaged it and installed it anyway. Nice. So much for doing quality work. Now I have to go back and have Mackin's install another window and hope they don't break the clips! I swore by these guys in the past. Now I just wanna swear at them. Actually? I give them less than one star! Here's my story: My 2000 Subaru was stolen and taken for a joy ride for several weeks before the perp was caught. (Never happens, right?). Two months later I was asked to "testify", and because he was found guilty, a month later I was notified that I was eligible for Victim's Restitution request. (never happens, right?). I was told to get an estimate for the damages. I scheduled at Mackin's, and on the phone I hit my first bad sign when I said I wasn't going through insurance, the scheduler challenged me, "well, do you know why you are going to do?" And became dismissive when I told him I only carried liability on the car and was going through the victim restitution fund, "how does THAT work", and telling me he'd never heard of it, but agreed to schedule anyway. When I arrived, there were no masks being worn in public spaces. As the estimator began to look over my car, he accused me of pointing out damage done to the car that was old when in fact I had been differentiating in our conversation between things the perps had done versus things I had done and to which he had clearly not been listening. And he said, "how am I supposed to know what was done previously or done while the guy had it." I told him "Because I have integrity". He implied I was lying when I insisted that one of the new dings on my front bumper was not there before the car was stolen, by reiterating, "no that's old it's got rust bubbling up from underneath" He told me several times to stop talking when I tried to correct the incorrect things he was telling me I had said, instead telling me that I was "cutting him off" and when I tried to clarify whether or not he was going to be able to give me an estimation of repairs, he cut me off and accused me of adding time to the job he was trying to do. He then said he wasn't sure how we got off on the wrong foot, and I told him it was because he accused me of lying at the very start of our exchange which he first denied and then stated he would have to get his manager to even see if they could put their name on the estimate. When the other male manager came over, I was greeted again with skepticism and similar requests as to what insurance company I was using and when I said I only had liability he told me they couldn't write the estimate because they would never do the work. I clarified, "If I gave you money and asked you to replace the dashboard where it says 'slut gang' you wouldn't do it" and he said he wouldn't because he couldn't guarantee the work. To be a victim of a crime and to be treated as if I were acting as a criminal myself? Such a horrible horrible horrible feeling when all I want is to be able to drive my kid to school without her looking at "slut gang" on the dash of my 2000 Subaru. I live right around the corner from Mackin's and I've had both my motorcycles stolen and then my car...deal with trash and needles and feces in my neighborhood daily and to be treated like this from a business in my own neighborhood? And then to have that man accuse me of being the hostile one? I just can't even. Classist, and sexist at worst and a disrespectful lack of empathy and horrible customer care at best. Will continue to share my story wide and far no matter how little it may impact Mackin's long term survival. I have never been treated so poorly. And it was in such stark contrast after the fab customer service I had gotten earlier today at Lombard Wheels for Less. Again, likely underlining the classist attitude informing his approach to my request. I just don't understand why he didn't just say "we don't do estimates for old cars". It would have saved a whole lot of grief and a super negative review and a long lasting and repeating critical story. Mackin's version of customer service is a nightmare. read more

Great communication, fast work, reasonable prices -- highly recommended. In January I dropped up a 2000 Golf TDI that hadn't been driven in several years, and had squirrels living in the engine compartment. They had a very thorough estimate ready within 3 or 4 hours. They walked me through the specific repairs when I had questions (and I was able to speak directly with the mechanic), and finished the work the next day. I've been driving the car every day since then, and I've had no problems with the work they did! read more

Rear-ended Friday July 19th on I-5 North during rush hour. Hard hit: $3000 damage. Initially, I drove my damaged car to Mackin's North Portland Auto Body, after talking with my insurance person. They got 4.6 stars in a review. They said they couldn't help me. I told them they were an authorized shop for USAA insurance. The tone suddenly changed. They brought out the person who deals exclusively with USAA customers--I'll call him "Gordon", not his real name. Gordon. Gordon called USAA. I told him I was leaving for vacation (NYC) in six days and would be gone for about ten days. He told me to bring the car back in five days. I did. It was the afternoon before my trip. I called to tell them I was coming in that afternoon. The receptionist said they had no record of any appointment and they couldn't take my car. We went around and around. I told them Gordon even emailed himself from my iPhone to get my contact information. Finally, I said, "let me call my insurance contact person." After she called, they said they could take my car. I dropped it off. When I flew back Friday evening after ten days, I knew they were closed. I called Monday morning. They said my car should be ready by Thursday. Mid-week: Gordon called. He said the rack needed to be removed. I told him the keys might be in the glove box but I would look for them in my house and garage. I spent some time looking and called him back to say I couldn't find them. "Oh, that's alright," he said. "They were in the glove compartment." On Thursday, Gordon phoned to say they were having trouble with my car's battery and getting loads of error codes. They tried to charge the battery but said it wouldn't hold a charge. I knew the battery was fine when I drove the car in. Gordon said insurance never pays for batteries, unless the case is physically damaged. "We need to replace it, "he said. What else could I do? I had been without my car fixed for about month, by this point. I agreed to pay for a new battery, nothing fancy. It was just over $150 dollars, with added labor. Added labor? I'll just pick up my car and it will be done, I thought. They had access to my vehicle for almost a month and I just wanted my Mazda back. I was unhappy with the shop but I felt no need to pursue it any further. I got my car back Friday but forgot my credit card. On Saturday, when I looked in the trunk for the first time, I noticed the entire liner was missing. Just the bare spare visible. I'll get it on Monday, I thought. They probably have it leaning against some wall in a bay. When I showed up on Monday, no one knew anything about the credit card. After some questioning and a call, the card was located. I asked about my trunk liner. I waited about 30 minutes while someone looked with no results. "He said it wasn't ever in there," she said accusingly. My face turned red. I'll check in my garage and make sure I didn't remove it by accident, "I said, not making eye contact. I looked at my house. It was not there. Then I realized I had removed all the visible items from my trunk before I took it in. But under the mat, I had flares, oil, and an emergency water bottle. If I had taken it out, would I have not also removed those items? I called back and said it was not in my garage. She said someone named Hector would call me that day. I made sure my ringer was on and waited. I would be working twelve hours the next day so this was my window of opportunity. I was not called. There should have been two trips to the shop: drop-off and pick-up. So far four, with more in the future. Every exchange with the shop has been a struggle--from the refusals to take the car to missing parts, added labor, my broken battery which worked fine when I drove twice to the shop, the accusation of bring the car without the mat, and failure to call me back. Wow! This shop goes above and beyond! In fact, if there was a super hero car repair man, I bet he would work here. I was rear-ended :( and took my car here as it was a convenient location. They took care of everything and even generously cleaned and detailed the inside of the car. Umm...anyone who is willing to fix my car, arrange for a rental, do the insurance paperwork, and then clean my car is automatically my hero. This is the second time I've gone to Mackin's for auto body work, and both times they did a great job. They are very courteous, on time, and straightforward. Both times they worked directly with the insurance companies, and had the rental car there when I dropped my car off, so it was an easy in and out situation. First of all, ask for Johnathon Starr (yes, that's the correct spelling). What a sweetheart. He is incredibly caring, communicative, and earnest. I'm not sure if he personally worked on my car, but he coordinated the experience. The left side of my car was smushed because of an accident. The right side had some old damages on it, which I wasn't there to fix. I also have had a leaking trunk, which I haven't been able to use in a couple of years because of the Portland rain--also, not something I was planning on getting fixed this time around. Not only did they make the side with the damages look brand new, they buffed out the other side and fixed my leaky trunk for FREE, which included finding where the leak was coming from in the first place. On top of that, my insurance wouldn't pay for a new bumper because it had some old damages on it. So, Johnathon gave me a sweet deal on a new one -- I think it was parts minus labor. In the end, I just paid my $500 deductible plus $200 for the bumper. So, that's $700 for a $3-4000 job. Amazing. Love these guys. Won't go anywhere else for auto body work now. read more

Due to the reviews I was a bit nervous bringing in my car. I voiced my concerns and was assured, "Nobody is perfect but we will do our best." The work was done very well, Pat and Hector were professional and kind. I needed my hood and front bumper replaced. There was some damage from past mishaps which they did their best to address as well. They are State Farm certified and the insurance connection went smoothly. They matched the paint perfectly, everything they noticed was explained thoroughly, they cleaned outside & inside!! They did the work more quickly than expected. My car feels brand new! I am a happy customer. I feel like baking them some cookies! Thank you!! read more

First review ever posted but had to go through the effort for an exceptional service from Mackin's. They went well beyond my expectations in not only repairing the initial damage covered by other driver's insurance but also repairing a previous problem caused by myself that was the worst of the two. They thoroughly cleaned the interior and exterior to boot. While my first impressions was an overly extended busy shop on first estimate, and it took a couple weeks to get me in due to insurance approval bottlenecks, it was well worth it. My first time ever dealing with an auto body shop so no comparisons but I can not think of anything they could have done better. read more

Final Result It cost $320.00 for another body shop to fix the work and damage done by Mackin's. 1) Taillight was fixed - rubber plug was lost by Mackin's during assembly 2) Clear coat overspray (due to Mackin's improper protection of areas NOT to be painted) was polished out in two door frames, bumper, outside of two doors and rear left quarter panel 3) Scratches on bumper, caused by Mackin's, were polished out 4) Hardened compound removed from rear seats and interior 5) Hardened compound removed from 7 exterior panels of car 6) Scratches and embedded streaks/lines polished out of 3 exterior panels of car Finally, the car's metallic paint shines like new metallic paint should! It has real depth and luster! Woohoo!! This is what I expected originally but it should have been done by Mackin's (as they were paid for) the first time! In short, the problems can be summarized as: 1) NO attention to detail was used during paint work on two panels that then affected NINE other panels 2) Poor finishing work affected all of the car's exterior except for hood and one (of four) door plus the leather interior It took 2+ months and another body shop to get a simple fender bender fixed. Not good. I find it funny and sad that the North PDX Mackin's has not responded to this review once but suddenly a few great reviews pop-up. Interesting how the review history and frequency changed all of the sudden. Oh well, my situation is over, thankfully. I wouldn't recommend anyone else go through this shop. Couldn't be much more disappointed with my experience here. On 1/24 I got into a minor accident that required both bumpers to be resprayed and some minor plastic work on the rear bumper to fix. They say OK we are busy at the end of the month let's get you in at the beginning of February. I say OK. Time passes and I finally bring the car in to get fixed. I receive a call shortly after dropping it off saying they now refuse to fix the current bumpers stating they didnt realize the rear bumper needed the plastic repair work before the respray and they wouldn't warranty any work done on it anyways because it had been resprayed before. I'm sorry, didn't you take pictures of everything and write me up a whole estimate? That's right, you did. Exasperated and just wanting my car fixed they convinced me to buy brand new bumpers and have them sprayed. So bumpers ordered, time passes, they arrive and finally get sprayed and I get a call saying they are ready. I go in excited to get my car back in one piece again and low and behold thats not the case. The front bumper didnt come with a tow hook cover (which they failed to mention to me before.. why would I only want SOME of the pieces needed to put my car back together?) and here is the kicker, the brand new rear bumper was BROKEN. A tab needed to mount the bumper back onto the car was broken and painted over. Meaning that it was broken before it went into the paint room and nobody even noticed before during or after. At this point, I'm pretty fed up and upset that I've spent all this money and time dealing with this and they still can't get it right. I ask for the regional managers info and speak directly to him. He does not even apologize to me and at best he offers to have his techs put the bumper back on for me when the new one arrives.. Time passes. Now, about a total of 3 weeks after I first got my estimate, supposedly everything is ready. I bring the car in to have the rear mounted and guess what, it's the wrong bumper. The brackets needed to mount the bumper properly don't fit on the bumper. So here we are, it's been almost a month now and I am STILL waiting to have my car back together. *Update 2/22 I finally got my bumpers back on and painted. Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else, period. This incompetence and disgusting lack of customer service is despicable from a "well known" body shop with multiple locations, i.e. they clearly have the financial capabilities to do things right. The most disappointing part is that this all could have been avoided if they just fixed the ones that were on the car like I had originally asked them to. Awful. read more

Poor quality work. They flat out ignored me when I told them what the problem was with my car and then proceeded to charge me 300$ for work that didn't need to be done. Then they told me "whoops, it was what you said it was all along!!! That'll be another 300$ to fix." So yeah. Never going here again. read more

Mackins went above and beyond to help us. We were rear ended and told by our insurance we had to take the car to Hillsboro for an estimate. We instead took it to Mackins, much closer to home and they handled it from there. They called Enterprise to pick us up and set up for a claim adjuster to come to their location. They treated us with respect and dignity and educated us about this insurance process. They didn't do any repairs as our car was totaled but they had our backs. I so appreciate the kindness and consideration they showed us. I will recommend them to anyone who needs car repairs! read more

I highly recommend avoiding this shop. In the last 6 months, I've had them work on two different cars. In BOTH cases, quality has been very poor. One car had to go to the dealership because They did not perform the repairs correctly. I've spent hours either waiting for them to make the repairs correctly or having to get it done correctly myself. From the first phone call, I got the sense the person was irritated with my basic questions about giving an estimate for auto body repair. He was also mildly sarcastic. When I showed up with my car at the time they assigned, they asked me the same questions they asked me on the phone. The estimate was timely, but the price was outrageous. I did my best to be respectful of Mackin's time and value and told him directly I wasn't interested and he seemed annoyed again. The short of it: This is a corporate model with ridiculous prices and average service. If you're in north Portland, go to Green Star, they are way ahead of these guys in every way. read more

I come here for 2 main reasons: 1. Debby. If you are familiar with Mackin's in Kenton, then you are familiar with Debby. This lady knows her stuff and makes you feel like you are talking to your sweet aunt. She remembers the car you had 5 years ago and makes you feel like you're getting a deal no matter what you spend. Debby has major skills. 2. I had a problem with my check engine light not going off even though a mechanical error could not be found and couldn't pass the DEQ. Mackin's could have charged me to replace something in my control panel, but first they reset it, warning me that the light would go on again soon, but to see if I could pass the DEQ before it did. I passed before it went back on, and I didn't have to pay for a repair. Success! read more

The guy I dealt with (Rob) was very nice and professional. There were some communication and paperwork problems at the start involving my insurance company and authorization. I was t boned and my insurance sent me to Mackin's. James, Hector and Melissa were the folks I dealt with. They were professional, courteous and communicated effectively. My insurance was dragging their feet left and right and it took 44 days to get our Jeep back. Also my insurance failed to advocate in my behalf and and didn't allow Mackin's to fix the Jeep back to the pre accident condition. This was obviously not Mackin's fault. They sent me home with a clean Jeep and we appreciated that. They also covered the remainder of the rental vehicle since my coverage exceeded the time it took to complete the repairs that was authorized. So we drove home with a wobbly and unsteady Jeep. Somewhere during the way my hood lock was damaged and the left mirror is not functioning as it was pre wreck. Lesson learned that Mackin's is great to work with. Your vehicle will not be as it was pre accident and insurances do not have your best interest in mind. I still give Mackin's 5 stars read more

I needed a part on my car repaired and decided to "walk in" to schedule an appointment for an estimate. I was not expecting them to be able to accommodate me right then! The gentleman that helped me was courteous and friendly, he was able to examine my car and give me a quote in about 20 minutes. On the day of my appointment, I walked to a nearby coffee shop expecting to be there a couple of hours while my car was getting repaired which was fine as I was planning to work from my computer. I received a call 90 minutes later to let me know the work was done. I also paid what was quoted to me. Wow. I highly recommend Mackin's, they are truly the best! read more

Beware of poor work and excuses. Despite their claim that there is a warranty on their work, when I brought it to their attention that they had failed to replace a piece where they made a repair, all of a sudden they claimed that they had initially noted that this piece was missing. No one told me about this at the time of the initial repair, despite the long stretches of time I was at the shop. They doctored their records after the fact just to avoid having to honor their warranty. Untrustworthy. read more

I was all set to bring my '06 Rubicon to Mackin's - I was in a pretty bad wreck 2 weeks ago...just finished all mechanical repairs but still needed a supplemental estimate for body work the insurance company missed right after the accident. I called Alex @ Mackin's. Told him there were items insurance had missed, I needed a supplemental estimate done, and needed the work insurance had noted done (ie. fender replaced & painted). No problem, right? Wrong. First, he told me he needed the insurance company to send him an "assignment" so he could do the estimate. (I found out too late that an "assignment" is something the insurance company provides him so he is considered the authorized repair shop.) I called insurance (State Farm) and had them send him the "assignment". An hour or so later, my husband got a call from Alex (we had an appointment for this afternoon for the assessment of the rest of the damage to my Jeep). Alex told him that unless we allow State Farm to pay him directly for all damage (initial and supplemental) he finds, he won't even do the preliminary estimate. Seriously. He also said he'd have to do a complete "tear down" (he explained they'd have to take everything apart to determine, for instance, any damage beneath the already-accounted-for fender). Totally insane and completely unnecessary - like I said, I've had a bevy of mechanics and suspension guys working on my Rubicon since the accident. Pretty sure there's nothing "underneath the fender". LOL All I really need is the bull bar damage assessed and interior damage estimated (a can of house pain went flying in the accident - it's an off-white blood bath in there). But Alex couldn't just do that. He made clear that the only way he'd do a prelim assessment is if he was directly paid by the insurance company for everything he "found". I don't know about you, but when you have a Rubicon like mine, you're going to have a lot of work done by friends and fellow off-roaders, you're going to special order your parts (because that's what we do). If Mackin's had any integrity whatsoever, they'd do the supplemental assessment, include the damage insurance missed, and VERY probably get my business and that of my fellow 4WD mud-dogs for now and in the future. In this case, if you're in an accident and you have a vehicle you've invested a lot of money in (like I have) DO NOT call these people. Alex and Mackin's should be ashamed of themselves. There's making a buck and then there's "whoring" - Mackin's is clearly in the latter category. read more

I took my car to Mackin's when the window clips broke. They told me that due to the design, the entire window would need to be replaced. I coughed up the money for new windows (not cheap) and they worked great. For about a year. When they failed again, I removed the door panel myself to find the windows had not been replaced. Instead, the clips had clearly been epoxied back together. Armed with my receipt showing I paid for new parts, I called Mackins. They told me since it was past the "warranty period" I was SOL. That's not the point! I paid for parts I never received and they offered not so much as an apology. They even had the nerve to tell me to bring my broken car in to get a quote for more repairs. 1 star is too many! read more

My 1989 Volvo was rear-ended in a parking garage, the driver's side tail light was smashed to pieces and the rear quarter panel dented. My insurance company (Safeco) required me to go to one of their approved shops for an estimate, Makins in north Portland was near my house, so I dropped it off for an estimate. Initially, they were very helpful. They gave me a detailed list of estimated charges (they were competitive) and said if I dropped my car off on Monday they would have it done by end of the day on Thursday. Piece of cake, right? Wrong! I left my car there on Sunday night so they could start working on it first thing Monday morning. Tuesday afternoon I received a phone call saying that they had to order the tail light from a different place because they couldn't get it from their usual supplier. I was told it was coming from Jim Fisher Volvo and would be delivered on Wednesday, and that my car was still on track to be finished on Thursday. Thursday morning I received a call that the part wasn't delivered on Wendesday because it was being shipped from SWEDEN and the only way to have my car done by FRIDAY was to go and buy the part myself and bring it to them! Seriously?!?! I had to leave work for an hour in the middle of the day (they said they had to have it before 1:00) and deliver the part to the body shop. I was promised it would be ready by 4:30 on Friday - I was very clear that I needed it no later than 4:30. When I arrived at 4:30, my car wan't ready. I again made it clear I needed my car immediately, because I had to pick my son up from day care before 5:15. At 4:45 I was finally told that it was being detailed (what?) and they were finishing up. I told them to stop detailing it immediately and give me my car. Finally at 5:05 my car appears, completely deatiled even though I told them not to finish and just give me the keys. The detailer pointed out in a snotty voice "we couldn't dry it because you're in such a hurry". Then I saw that the other tail light went out when you stepped on the brake - this wasn't a problem when I dropped it off. When I pointed this out I was told they had nothing to do with it, even though it happened while they were working on it. Then I saw that one of my license plate lights was hanging out of the socket with the wires exposed! I was told that the spring clip that holds it in place was broken (it wasn't when I dropped it off!) and they took no reponsibilty for it. And as the icing on the cake, as I was pointing this out to them, one of their mechanics said in a very snotty voice "Don't you have to do pick up your babies now? We wouldn't want you to be late getting your babies, since you're in such a hurry." I got home and saw they didn't reattach the clips that hold the spare tire cover in place (it was just hanging off the tire), they separated the carpet from the side of the back of the wagon and didn't reattach the clips on that either. Granted, my outside of my car does look good. However; their customer service was awful, and they were unprofessional and rude. I will never reccomend this shop to anyone, very bad experience! read more

It's very hard to wait three weeks for your car to get repaired, but what makes it worse is the excuses as to why it's not getting done in the two weeks you expected - need an extra part that won't be here for four days, and then the guy who's putting it in is off, etc. Didn't feel like the manager was motivated to get my vehicle back to me at all. Feel frustrated for getting into an accident in the first place, but even more for taking it there. read more
