This place is a hidden gem! The service was super fast and our server Liz was bubbly and very kind. Inside there was a good amount of seating, but I sat outside due to the nice weather. It was nice and quiet and I liked how you don't really hear the traffic. Finally, the food was one of the top three places I've been for sushi in Gainesville. It was fresh and one roll had about 10 pieces- great for the price. Plus, their options were not overwhelming, but added variety for people who prefer different types of fish/no fish.

Came here on a Monday in the late afternoon. We chose to sit at a table outside for a drink and a couple of appetizers. We ordered the Melissa bites and the steamed gyoza. Both appetizers were excellent. The restaurant was not busy but our server was not attentive in refilling our waters. They also only serve beer/wine so we opted out of having a drink. It was a good experience overall.

Tasty sushi and big portions for the price. In a small quaint village area off of Archer rd that I yearn to visit again. Would recommend for the beautiful walking area, service, and sushi and noodles.

It's not ideal to get sushi during summer, but I had to as I was craving some. Decided to check Volcanic Sushi located in Haile village for lunch. First of all, price and portion size was pretty good in my opinion, but the quality of sushi was not... It could be the time of the year, could be something else but I was not too impressed with the taste unfortunately. I will consider checking it out once more when the weather cools down, but my first experience here was so so.

Their lunch specials here are outstanding! I've had several, but today I got the red curry with chicken and chose brown rice and miso soup. The server was new but she did a wonderful job, and the restaurant was quiet even with the farmer's market finishing up outside.

Obviously if you're hungry don't go to a sushi place but definitely don't go to this one. Nice place! Nice vibe, great area. Nice and friendly staff. Thought I'd sit outside with my dog for a quick meal. Ordered Nigiri 9 pc. Mori B at 6:50 right after sitting down. Apparently they "lost my ticket" after they served me my Miso soup though. After an hour of waiting, sushiless, I was given the excuse "our sushi is backed up" as food was being delivered to people who were seated after I was. Eventually had to ask a hostess to check on my food, which finally made them realize they lost the ticket. After they took my order a second time the food came in maybe 7 minutes though which was nice. They apologized a lot about losing the ticket but everything was still full price, even though this took basically my entire night. Won't be coming here in person again.

This could have very well been a 4 star experience BUT I was definitely forgotten about and the staff were especially rowdy. I would go into detail but I'll keep it brief and offer suggestions instead. As the only person dining in, I was able to choose my seat. Unfortunately the booth seats were very dirty with small crumbs. I was able to swipe my hand to get a few off the area I sat (not ideal or sanitary) but several remained on the bench surrounding me. I didn't think it wise to slide across and use my pants as a napkin. Staff who are coming in prior their shift should not be a disruption. A young lady who I later gathered would be starting her shift shortly after changing into uniform was very loud, yelling and laughing with coworkers about taking shifts. She did not know I was dining in since she made a statement about no one being there until she was informed by her coworkers. When staff are conducting a shift change, the staff member should follow up with their tables prior to leaving as well as the employee who would be taking over the table, instead of being engaged in their phones, gathering belongings & walking by the guest without acknowledgement & leaving. Reminder: I was the only person dining in. After waiting 10+ mins (potentially longer but to not exaggerate due to this unfortunate experience, I added a +) to order another roll and dessert, my server walked towards the restroom and back around on her phone with her backpack-- no acknowledgement...telling her rowdy coworkers goodbye. It took about 10 mins or so for someone to ask if I wanted anything else. At this time, I asked for my check. Please educate employees to show initiative. Several employees walked right by my table without making eye contact or checking in. The out of sight out of mind mentality is not the best when working in food service. Lastly, in regards to your employees, it may be best to break bad habits of employees who clock in and immediately ask coworkers/managers if they will be busy today so they can get a break. Food: The shrimp tempura was by the book & the crunchy roll was decent compared to others. Because I at least got to try to the food, an average rating of 3 stars will suffice. This restaurant was actually recommended to me so I drove a little out the way to give it a try. My assumption is that they are better able to uphold their standard when the servers are more busy and can focus on customers, upselling, etc. instead of the latest gossip.

I have been to a restaurant in a long time where I sent the food back and left. The quality of the fish looked so bad. Then I found out they were serving tilapia. You can even see how old the fish looks ( grayish) and the rolls are falling apart as they are served. The fish they are serving is just so low quality.

I really enjoyed our food there today. We ended up getting the lunch menu, red curry with tofu and with chicken. Our waiter was very kind and they did a good job, providing with our vegetarian needs and spice preferences. I will say that their red curry is probably one of the best I've had in Gainesville. My friend enjoyed the fried ice cream tempura as well! We will be back for more!

Small container of Wok Seared Beef. The portion is so small and it cost $19. Not worth it at all!

This is my first time trying this place. The portions were very small. I spent $49 (including the tip) on this small Seered Beef, the John I Roll, and Miso soup. At least the soup was filled reasonably (some places fill it 2/3rds of the way). The sushi was "okay". It was better than grocery store sushi but not much better. It kept falling apart and I expected a lot more to it for $17. I know at Hana Sushi the rolls that are in this price range are delicious and have lots of toppings. This was not worth $17. I bought the seered beef to have it for lunch tomorrow. Again, very small portion. I always like to try places that I've never eaten at. I doubt I will come back here when I can go to Hana Sushi and get better prices, portion sizes, and better quality sushi. I was disappointed in this $49 meal. Hana will be worth the drive next time.

    Tonkotsu Ramen
    Sofia A.

Went there on a date, we both got the tonkotsu ramen and I have to say this is the best ramen I have had in Gainesville so far. The service was incredible, food was quick and our server was very attentive. The ramen portion was huge and filling. I have also had the duck ramen and recommend both.

I have so many positive things to say about this place!! Living in Haile Plantation and having this place a 20 minute walk away from home is awesome! Just had our second visit since the relocation and that move was for the better! During COVID we ordered take out so many times and sat outside the first time we visited. The food is amazing and the staff is so so friendly! Keep up the great work!!

Volcano roll galore! But not gluten free. But gluten bf loves it.

Soup was included too. It was a decent size bowl with generous portions of each mentioned fish. It tasted mostly fresh, with the uni having the premium silky flavor, the ikura having the briny pop, and the scallops having the buttery texture with a hint of lemon since they sliced it. The rice was flavorful with the added seasonings. It was definitely a luxury splurge. And best of all, it was a great deal for only 30 dollars. The soup was nothing special, but still refreshing and enjoyable. The service was pretty casual, but quick and friendly. The atmosphere is very casual with a limited amount of tables, and the sushi bar is pretty small. When you enter, you would think it was just a counter service or takeout restaurant. At least there was nice Japanese music in the background. This restaurant is a great example of why you shouldn't judge it by it's atmosphere. While it looks so casual and a little boring, their Hokkaido bowl makes it feel luxurious. It was well worth the splurge and such a great deal for 30 dollars. I will definitely eat here again whenever I visit Gainesville, and try their Mahzu don next time, which uses other higher end fishes they have. Overall: A

The first night it was CRAZY busy. It's a smaller restaurant, and even though I was sitting at the bar, I had to wait a little because the kitchen was backed up. I honestly didn't mind because I figured that was probably a good sign that I picked the right place! I sat at the bar and was taken care of by Will. I overheard that he had literally just come from working his first job and was starting his second shift, and you never would've known it. He was on top of everything, taking care of his tables and everyone at the bar while still being friendly and attentive. He recommended the Lonely Angel roll, and it was a 10/10. I had it with miso soup and a glass of wine and left very happy with my choice. Well, I worked all day the next day and hadn't eaten, and I'm a creature of habit. If somewhere is good, I'm going back! I went back a little earlier this time, so it was much quieter, and to my surprise Will was behind the bar again. I got to talk with him a little more and he was super personable and genuinely enjoyable to chat with. He recommended a tuna tobachi and a Hokkaido roll, and somehow they were BOTH even better than what I had the night before. Seriously, 100/10. Great food, great service, and clearly consistent enough to get me there two days in a row. If I'm ever back in Gainesville, I will absolutely be back. To be fair, we went on an extremely busy Friday night with graduations and events happening all over town. When we arrived, we were quoted a 20-25 minute wait, which ended up being closer to 45 minutes. Things happen, especially on nights like that, so we rolled with it. After we were seated, though, it was pretty quiet for another 15-20 minutes before anyone came over. Finally, a young waitress came up and jokingly said, "Well, I guess I'm your waitress now," and apologized several times. Honestly, I appreciated the honesty because it genuinely felt like they may have been short staffed or had someone quit unexpectedly. Having worked in restaurants myself when I was younger, I know how chaotic nights like that can become, so I really tried to give them grace. Once things got going, the experience definitely improved. The chef was incredibly nice, and I was honestly disappointed that I missed recording his sweet egg flip on camera! Little by little, our meal came together and everything was cooked really well. The filet was absolutely delicious, and my favorite part of the meal was honestly the noodles. The chicken was also really good, and I happily took the leftovers home for lunch the next day. The miso soup had plenty of fresh vegetables and ingredients, which I appreciated. My only real suggestion for next time would be to at least bring waters to the table while people are waiting because I was incredibly thirsty by the time everything started moving. Also, I am sorry to the chef because I completely forgot to bring cash for a tip! Just as an FYI for anyone visiting, you can tip the hibachi chef separately too. And listen, it would have been a full five stars if we got the classic saki squirted into our mouths, but maybe that was just a "north" thing from back home in Massachusetts. Totally joking... kind of. Overall, we will definitely be back. Just know that if you visit on a super busy night, you should absolutely expect a wait. Also, it can get a little smoky inside during peak hours, so if that bothers you, it may not be the best fit.

You could tell it was fresh. O fishy taste. It just melted. I think they take care with their fish--even served on lacquered square plates. Fish styled Oyako don. Not the chicken and egg mother son combo, but a salmon sashimi and tobiko arrangement. Colorful and delish. Combo rolls from the sushi bar were gimmicky but fresh and filling. Why not... The soft shell crab was two small crabs cut and drop fried. We were surprised to see it here. Tasted fresh and good. If you've never had it check out videos of molting crabs. They take them right after the molt, before the soft skins hardens to new shell. Matcha cheesecake was very good flavor. Not your ordinary New York cheesecake but softer, allowing the slight bitterness of the green stuff to come through. Oh yeah, the tea was $4 per person. Usually my pet peeve. For the prices they're charging, you'd expect quality and portion sizes to match--neither did. The plates were small, and the food was mediocre at best. My wife ordered the Japanese curry rice, and the beef was so tough it was basically inedible. That's not a minor issue--that's the main component of the dish. I had the seared yuzu kosho steak, and it didn't feel freshly prepared. In fact, most of the food tasted like it had been reheated. At one point, it genuinely felt like the hardest working thing in the kitchen was the microwave. We also tried the edamame, which somehow managed to be the least offensive thing on the table hardly a compliment. At this price point, this just isn't acceptable. There are too many places doing it better to justify coming back.

Unfortunately, we must have visited on an off night. My rice was hard, the steak tasted like it had been reheated, and some of the vegetables were cold in spots. The staff was very friendly, and there's plenty of parking in the large lot, which was a plus. My husband ordered sushi and said it was good, so that may be the better option. If you're planning to get the steak hibachi, I'd recommend going during a busier time when the food is likely being made fresh. Unfortunately, based on our experience, we probably won't be back.

The unexpected: It is not a sit-down restaurant. You order at the counter, they call you back to retrieve your tray, then seat yourself, get your own drink refills and bus your own trays. (This is also how the prices stay so low I'm sure) But this did not make for a date night, experience lol. It did make us laugh at ourselves for not checking reviews ahead of time. The not so great: Noise level was borderline too loud due to the plethora of hard surfaces and unnecessary club-like mix being played. The sushi rolls were decent, not great, but I guess what I would expect for the price point. Would I go back, yes - but probably for lunch or very casual early dinner where my expectations are much more in line with the experience.
