(English) I've wanted to come here for a long time. I remember that once went here three years ago, from my previous experience I decided to return this last weekend and it remains the same. The food was really good, we didn't order sushi rolls because I remembered that they had small pieces of fish and a lot of rice, so we tried the Salmon Tartar, Tuna Tataki, and Tonkotsu Ramen. Both raw dishes were delicious, the sauces and spices were on point, for the ramen, the noodles, you can notice that are store-bought noodles, but the broth was delicious. Is a good choice, but probably won't order it again. The staff was fine, not the friendliest nor the most professional to be honest, almost awkward. Its atmosphere is really nice and welcoming, with a couple of tables inside, and the about other 8 in its patio area. Their prices are high compared to other sushi places in Gainesville like Mahzu (my favorite of all time). It is probably a place that you should try since so many people have different experiences of their own, but for the long car drive and the quality of the food, I would maybe stick to other sushi places. The rolls here are not your typical 6-8 rolls. We expected the portions to be so much smaller but we're surprised when we had ordered enough for 4 people! The quality of the fish was exceptional. The unagi melted in your mouth. We had the volcanic roll, the miso roll, and another variation of the California roll. We also got the crab Rangoon and the bao buns. This is one of my favorites, the sushi looks terrific but I'm not fond of sushi. However the menu of cooked alternatives is terrific. Some of my favorites include a wonderful curry sauce available with crispy duck or with shrimp and lobster. They have a sizzling platter with vegetables, available with salmon, beef, shrimp or chicken. The menu includes a nice selection of appetizers, Asian beers, wine and saki. I have never looked at the dessert menu because I was always too full from dinner. They have outside seating available and are dog friendly. read more

I recently bookmarked this restaurant to try because it had such great reviews and seemed like it would be a great choice for dinner. I live about 15 minutes from the Haile Village Center, so my friend and I decided to drive the distance to see what this restaurant had to offer! On the website, it says that the restaurant closes at 10PM. My friend and I arrived a little before 9PM and we already got the vibe that the servers were annoyed at us for coming an hour before they closed. There is plenty of time for us to be seated, order, receive our food and pay within an hour if they are quick with their service. We received our menus and I had read reviews on Yelp of what was good to order, so I decided to order the Red Curry with Chicken instead of sushi, which is what my friend ordered. I was so shocked at the way our waitress was handling our table. She blatantly sighed out loud and seemed to roll her eyes when taking our orders. She was slow to write down our orders and did not hear what my friend had ordered. So when the time came, she stared at my friend waiting for her to state her order, but of course my friend was confused as to what she was staring at her for. This led to waitress' annoyance with us and I was appalled. There is no excuse for being rude to customers just because you want to close early...you should not be working as a waitress then. Finally, our meals came out and I was highly disappointed with what I received. Barely any chicken was present in my dish and the dish was more of a soup. I was not impressed with my visit and will not be returning here, especially since we decided to make the drive out here just for this restaurant. read more

It was my first time at Volcanic Sushi & Sake after hearing multiple positive reviews. Luckily there was one table available inside when I arrived on a Wednesday night. I am not sure if I was just super hungry that night or if their kitchen was just backed up, but there seemed to be a bit of a wait for the food to come out. We ordered the Kanisu Deluxe appetizer, the Volcanic Salmon, and the Tonkotsu Ramen. The Kanisu was refreshing and light! I recommend getting this appetizer. It is definitely unique and worth trying. Volcanic Salmon is essentially like Teriyaki Salmon but served on a hot plate with assorted vegetables. I am a huge fan of teriyaki salmon and was really looking forward to getting my food. Unfortunately, I felt like the salmon had a bit of a "frozen/freezer burn" taste. It was not extremely obvious but I did notice it. I don't know what it is about their sushi that tastes so good but it is amazing and super fresh. This is my favorite place to get sushi. If you look at my reviews I'm a frequent sushi eater so I have a lot to compare too. This is hands down not only the best sushi in Gainesville but the freshest I've ever had. The sushi chefs are very sweet and honestly willing to make whatever you want. They are so creative. Portion size is very good. One of my biggest pet peeves about sushi is when its 75% rice.. this place is not like that. There is always more in the middle(aka fish and veggies)like there's supposed to be. I love coming here and sitting outside and enjoying the community feel . If there was one thing I could say that could improve, would be service. Just can occasionally be slow but all the serves have been sweet and helpful with recommendations and such. But the food is impeccable, it blows Dragonfly out the water. The atmosphere is strange upon walking in and it does feel pretty filthy inside. The service started out prompt and friendly. We started with edamame and miso soups. The edamame came out immediately and the soups came out 15 minutes later. A little strange since it's pre-made but not a huge issue. The service progressively got worse throughout the meal. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and it was flavorless. The heavy rice to shrimp ratio could be a factor in why it was so flavorless. Like most shrimp tempura rolls, I was expecting eel sauce so I had to order it once the roll was brought to the table. I proceeded to pour it over my roll and noticed the color was off. After taking a bite I knew something was off as it was inedible. I called the waiter over and his response was "oh yeah something went wrong with that sauce when we cooked it let me ask the chef". The chef yelled out "it was over cooked". Not sure why anyone would knowingly serve that. On a positive note, the staff promptly changed the roll out for a new one and acted very professional. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Volcanic yet! Fortunately (but unfortunately for my waistline and wallet) Volcanic is just a short walk from my apartment. I can not be more complementary about Volcanic. Their staff are absolutely amazing and make you feel so welcome.. They even seem to love my dogs as much as I do. The sushi, plate dishes, spicy raw bowls and ramen are incredible. Portions are a great size. This is a great establishment to meet friends and to take out of town family. I enjoy the food at Volcanic Sushi and we order quite a bit of takeout from the Millhopper location. However, the last three times we got takeout our orders were not complete and we did not notice this until we got home. How can you forget to put the rice in with our dinner entrees?? Unbelievable! Three times in a row this happen. In addition, they forgot to include dipping sauces with items ordered. And the last time we were there for takeout...the place was empty. So why was there an error in our simple two meal order - Unacceptable! When i called this last time to report the error, i was told they would compensate us for the mishap. But the next time we called to place a take out order, we were told NO - there would be no remedy for their mistakes. We have many other sushi /Asian food places with minutes from home that we enjoy just as much & have not had ANY problems with their service. We went ahead and ordered from one of those places instead. I went into the restaurant several days later to report these inefficiencies and spoke to the head waitress as a manager was not there. I told this person that we will no longer be patronizing the business and that I am only here to report that there is a real issue with take out orders not being checked before being brought out to the customer; if this has happened to us THREE TIMES in a row - who else is not getting their proper order? There's a pattern here. We will no longer be patronizing V.S. Very poor management and their staff is not properly trained and they don't care that we spend good money for half a meal. read more

We came around 6 on a weeknight and were the only ones in the restaurant but it quickly filled up. Our server was very nice and accommodating throughout the meal. We shared the veggie tempura, coconut and chicken soup, angry eel roll and red dragon roll which was a lot for 2 people. Had a whole roll and some of the tempura to take home as leftovers. The soup was very good, creamy and rich with a tangy coconut flavor. The tempura was crispy and tasty also, with a good selection of different vegetables. And finally the sushi also delicious! I must say... I was super surprised by this place having been my first time here. At the suggestion of my wife, I wanted to be a good husband and indulge her craving for sushi for lunch. No appetizers this round. We went straight to the sushi and rice bowl. Ask you have to do is look at the pictures. The quality is unlike anything you'll have in town. My beef teriyaki was fantastic. The beef had legit grill marks and just melted in your mouth. If you've ever seen Jiro you'll be able to appreciate how important rice is to any sushi or bowl meal. I've never had rice so tender and sticky... in a good way! My wife was kind enough to share her lunch as well and I will actually say it... best sushi I've ever had. Period. I was more impressed honestly than I expected with this place. I'd been to the Chinese restaurant that was in this same location before, so I knew the small space they would be working with and despite that, Volcanic made out pretty well, adding some sushi bar-appropriate decorations and making use of their outside seating area, also. It's not perhaps ideal, but it works. Not a place for large groups, however. The quality of the actual sushi I had was impressive: very fresh fish--same quality insofar as the fish itself as I'd find at Mahzu or Fuji, which I consider Gainesville's best two sushi restaurants currently. The crab rangoons were not as good however, not bad either. Rangoons are tricky: it's easy to get too much oil in them while cooking them or too dry and tough, either way. These were a tad bit dry and the dough too thick for my liking. The crab rangoon is not a traditional asian dish, by the way. It was probably invented by Trader Vic for his tiki bars--seriously--simply based on what he knew of pu-pu style Polynesian finger foods from his service in WWII in the Pacific. Vic claimed it was a traditional Burmese recipe, but seems the Burmese dispute this. I recently have really gotten into cooking Burmese cuisine at home and have yet to see a rangoon recipe from a pre-1950s source so . . . Because the restaurant is small, the chef seems willing to make custom rolls if you ask nicely, too: I asked if they could make a yellowtail and scallion roll (not hard to do, but not on their menu, either) and the chef turned out a perfectly good rendition of this for me. All in all, a pretty good place. I question if another location could have served them better, but really, they seem to be doing well and I expect get a lot of take-out orders, too. read more

Sushi was average, and sliced way too thin. Doesn't matter how good you are with chopsticks, the roll falls apart. The Sashimi is also poorly cut and quantity a joke (we received two cubes the size of dice). Good service. And please, turn off the fluorescent light! I don't understand the hype. read more

I ordered the John Roll which included shrimp tempura among other things. Unfortunately, there were several pieces of shrimp tail inside of the rolls. Most sushi places have the entire tail remain outside of the roll so you know where it is. Here it looks like they chopped the tail off and left pieces of it inside the rolls. Limited dine-in space and prices higher than other comparable sushi places make this a one and done. read more
