Same as the first experience, absolutely wonderful. Waw...amazing! It was late and most restaurants were closed so we had to go to a bar for food. The menu looked interesting so we took our chance. And I'm so glad we did! The menu is incredible...full of imagination, diverse ingredients and bursting with flavor. I seriously can't wait to come back here and might schedule another business trip just to eat here again ;) We had duck and stripped bass but really each plate had many vegetables, sauces and garnishes. This place is a joke. They took our reservation days in advance and texted me the day before to confirm our booking, only for us to show up on the night to find the restaurant completely closed. This was a place my mom had been looking forward to trying and wanted to take me to before I flew home. On the plus side, there are several other great places nearby who were more than willing to accommodate us on short notice. We ended up at Novel - which was absolutely delicious and would highly recommend - a special shout out goes to the Fox and Pearl who, while they initially had no availability, called back within 5 minutes to offer us a table. Voltaire didn't even answer our phone calls while we were sitting outside their restaurant to inquire about our reservation. We drove ages in fairly poor conditions to come for dinner and were left stranded. We felt completely let down and have no desire to ever try this place again. read more

Voltaire is on our KC favorite's circuit because it continues serving up creative and perfectly prepared cuisine and cocktails, with pitch perfect service. Matt made my brother in law an "on the spot" original cocktail and explained the nuances of its mezcal base at table, and made my wife an "Officer and a Gentleman," Bourbon based and another of Matt's fun creations. Our table service was equally fab, with Sarah W., giving friendly knowledgable descriptions and advice on our smalls, mains and afters. The Turkish cheese appetizers, mains of haddock, pork medallions, and buttermilk chicken livers ;)' were all 10/10. The kitchen line was hitting on all cylinders. A level of care and detail that is exceptional. After mains, we shared the grilled peach "twist" on a Caprese that was a glorious bite and palate reprieve. A bit pricey but they are classy, tasty and pretty nice group of folks. $9 on average for drinks and about $20 on the small plates. Alot of the options are combinations I haven't come across before but the flavors work. Seems to be their thing, taking classics and changing things up a bit. I mean everybody does this but it's all pretty wildly adventurous. Not to mention the courage it takes to put it out their. Their is a bit of a southern men's club feel to it. Lots of dark wood, big sturdy bar running the length of one side, and booths on the other. Low candlelight, duck decor, and the deal sealer a highlighted bourbon selection. This was my first time there for dinner and it was a really fun experience. We had reservations for a group of five and were readily seated upon arrival. Chris, in the magical tiger shirt, was attentive and provided really good recommendations. Of the items we ordered, I much preferred his recommendations over some of the rogue decisions we made. I'm a big fan of shared plates so if you like family-style, this place is for you. Also - super great place for vegetarians. I actually preferred all the vegetable dishes over the meat dishes. Below is a collection of dishes we ordered. It was my birthday so we kind of went a little crazy. Tiger Cry Beef - This was really good. It reminded me of Vietnamese/Thai flavors. Chris said that it just came back on the menu so if you see it, definitely order it. Lots of lime and perfectly cooked steak. Apple beet salad - I love beets so this is totally my kind of salad. I've had variations of this salad before and it didn't disappoint. It was tart, sweet, and crunchy. Grilled octopus - Spanish flavors, there's chorizo and perfectly grilled in a tomato broth. It's not overly salty which I often find when chorizo is involved. The table really liked the broth and Chris gave us extra bread to dip. Vegetable tagine - I love Moroccan spices and although it was not cooked in an actual tagine (or at least didn't come out in one), the flavors were tried and true. This was a generous portion and I ended up keeping the plate for the entire dinner. Pappardelle - Perfectly al dente. It was a good midway dish for us that had a mild, earthy flavor. Scallops - This was also good but not as memorable. There was a blackened crust that gave a little crunch. I wasn't in the mood for seafood but my friends loved it. Gerber chicken - Reminds me of Christmas on a plate. Chris said it was Thanksgiving, but you get the gist. Super flavorful and sweet/cinnamon from the apples/sweet potatoes/pecans. This was a hands-down favorite for the table. The chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender. I'm not one for sweet entrees but this was an overall table pleaser and favorite. Steak - Cooked well, horseradish potatoes were a hit, and yum to tempura green beans. Not as memorable ... probably because we were mostly full by the time this dish arrived. We ended the night with three desserts. Matcha-chai creme brulee was a huge letdown. It was very chai-forward and the consistency was where I took most offense. It was not as smooth and velvety in texture. I think the egg was overcooked so it was a little chunky. Apple pie was ok, nothing to rave about and the dark chocolate bar was also good but not outstanding. I had great expectations for this meal overall because the dishes were pricey and our check was not a joke. For the price I'm paying, I wanted to adore/anticipate every dish that came out and then upon taking the first bite of every dish, I wanted to see the satisfied reaction on everyone's faces as well as hear all the appreciative noises. That didn't happen really happen. I loved Chris, the atmosphere and restaurant vibe were wonderful, they played records (yes!), and the food made for a lovely birthday. I heard the drinks were good, too. I didn't partake because I'm pregnant. Come to Voltaire to at least try it out. This is an "occasion" restaurant for when you want to splurge on a special meal. Voltaire is hands down the best restaurant I have tried in 2018. I visited for the first time in September, and I have been back five times in two months. What do I love about it? Honestly, everything. I suggest you take a few foodie friends, visit for dinner, and order everything to share. The food is incredible. The scallops are perfectly cooked. You can't go wrong with any of the side dishes. The cheese board is decadent and includes a nice variety. Voltaire is also a great spot to cozy up to the bar for a drink. They have plenty of beer, wine and cocktails to choose from. The decor is inviting and warm, and the staff is first class. You'll always find great music coming from the record player. Very cool spot in the West Bottoms with a nice atmosphere and they play good music. I'd been there a long time ago when it was R Bar and kept meaning to come back since it became Voltaire. I stopped in early on a Saturday evening; I expected it to be dead but there were a few people at the bar and three or four tables which seemed like a nice little crowd for the early hour. I sat at the bar and was still happy hour so I ordered a a half dozen oysters. They were good but small which I thought was a little off since they were $3/each on the HH menu. Then also from the HH menu I ordered the pomme frites and the mussels. The fries were not hot at all. The flavor was good, but if I'm going to eat a bunch of french fries, they need to be hot and crispy. So I let the bartender know and she apologized and sent them back. Meanwhile, I was eating the muscles and they were not good. The ones on top were very cold; the broth was lukewarm, and several of them were not even open. They brought out a new plate of frites and the server said that the chef sent her apologies and they would be taking them off my bill. (which I wasn't expecting.) They were very hot and delicious. The bartender asked how the rest of my food was and I couldn't even mention the muscles. I didn't want them to think that I just wanted my food for free, plus I didn't much care for the flavor (not really their fault) and didn't want them to offer to replace them. So I just didn't say anything, and ate fewer than half. The place is hip and the service was good and friendly but the experience was just off. I would come back and give it another try if friends wanted to go because even the best of places can have an off day. But I'd go later when it's busier and the kitchen is in full swing. read more

Voltaire is haunted by the ghosts of cocktails past, and in the best way possible. Since the demise of R Bar, I've lamented the lack of access to this gorgeous WEst Bottoms building. But in stepped Voltaire, and now I can go back to feeling at once olden-timey and sexy. The bar is still as stunning as ever. Dimly lit and made of rich, dark woods they truly don't make them like this anymore. An incredibly impressive collection of top shelf liquors and boozy rarities decorate the space, and provide all sorts of inspiration on what you'd like to imbibe next. Service is classy and attentive. I just feel like a million bucks when sitting at this bar! The cocktail menu is broken into originals and classics, and all hit an impressive $8 price point. My definite favorite was (I believe) called the Rob Collins, a mezcal cocktail that really highlighted the qualities of that spirit without punching you in the face. The Aviation is traditional and refreshing. There were others I enjoyed as well, but that's when things get fuzzy. I'm giving 4 stars simply because I haven't actually EATEN here yet, but that will change soon. I hope everybody gives it a fair shake, because while Voltaire definitely harkens back to classier times, they've also exercised the demons that plagued its previous tenant. read more

Had kind of a bad experience at Voltaire but the food was pretty lack-luster too. I will say it is a cool looking space and the bar seems nice, maybe this is a better place to have drinks. I just felt like I had to accommodate their cooking staff and kitchen as opposed to being accommodated as a customer. They couldn't put cheese on my scrambled eggs because it would interfere with the cooking line in the kitchen or something. I thought that was a little weird. I ordered two sides of eggs and two sides of bacon and sausage because I'm following a keto diet. The waitress instead decided to adjust my order to something else without asking me first if I wanted to change my order to that. What should have been $13 turned into $20 because of her adjustment. Two stars for the house made bacon. That is definitely pretty tasty. read more

Voltaire is yet another place I take folks who are visiting from out of town to show them what a great place Kansas City is. Between the amazing food, incredibly creative drinks, and "timeless" atmosphere that comes from being set in such a fabulous old building, It's got that great combination of attributes that makes you think, "I could just stay here all day!" Well, I could. The drinks, alone, or combined with the fact that they actually play vinyl records at the bar, are enough to make me feel that way. Again, that perfect "timeless" balance of contemporary and vintage that permeates every bit of the place. I mostly go to Voltaire for their Happy Hour, and the aforementioned creative drink list is always an adventure. And when there's good booze in the mix, it's the best kind of adventure! The menu they serve at Happy Hour is great, as well, with imaginative plays on the small-bites preference of a light menu. Voltaire has a ton of charm, and you can tell that everyone who helps bring that charm to life, through food, drink, service, and atmosphere, means every bit of it. Good service, lack luster food and a little over priced. Voltaire is a great place to have drinks after work but, for me, it doesn't really go any further than that. I feel bad even writing this review because I love supporting the West Bottoms and all the little places to go down here. Anywhoo... If you're want a drink the stockyard fix is a must. Also if you are getting some wine and want it in a stemware glass, you have to ask for it. They give them to you in the little Spanish style wineglasses that look like little petri dishes (I promise I'm not being close minded to european culture). I got the charcuterie plate for $14 and was expecting some meat, cheese, etc. It was exactly that "some" cheese (3 very small pieces of stuff I could have picked up at the store easy - nothing special) and "some" meat. It was 2 small strips, a weird pate they make in house, and Don't get me wrong, they have a couple things on the menu I would recommend (the fundido) is amazing and the service is great. I just never have any luck here and it seems overprice for having such few things on the menu that I haven't found disappointment in. read more

I get the delays that can come from trying a highly recommended and popular joint, but it's never an excuse for just poor processes and service. Voltaire might have just won my heart! Easily impressed by each and every eclectic dish. The octopus appetizer made me wish it was acceptable to lick the bowl clean. Each member of our party ordered a different entree and each one blew our socks off. Don't forget their cocktails! My wife and I came here on a Sunday for brunch. I like the atmosphere, which was lively and fun, but without letting you forget that food is the focus here. Service was average, no complaints. We got a cinnamon roll to share. It was very good, warm on the inside with a cool frosting. I also liked that it was not too sweet. We got a pear and frisée salad and fried chicken brunch. These courses were okay, not necessarily outstanding. The salad was over dressed and portion was appropriate for a side, not an entree salad. The fried chicken was a bit tough. This was a great find for our short trip to KC. My wife linked the ambiance- it was small and cozy. I'd recommend a booth in the back if you want it more quiet. There was also a nice bar area and tables at the front. A small stage area was occupied by a DJ when we visited (7:15 pm reservation on Friday). My wife had wine and I had a draft IPA - both good. To start, we split an order of mussels and a roasted pear and burrata salad. The salad was very tasty and there was plenty to share. Mussels were the classic preparation with toasted bread and good broth. We originally planned to each get a large plate but decided on two more small plates to share. We ordered a potato gnocchi special with mushrooms which was really good. The octopus, however, was the real standout. It was easily the best I've ever had. Grilled to perfection! I had this ridiculously awesome salad for brunch here. That's all I ate, so I can't comment further, but good grief it was delicious! Three grain...soft and crunchy...pea vine style greens...beautiful....grapefruit...refreshing....avocado....cool....cashews...more crunch..and a subtle cardomom vinaigrette tied it all together. After all the bbq and burgers and beers on the KC scene this was a lovely respite. The bar is absolutely beautiful, although I didn't have a drink would love to come back. They always have vegan options that are absolutely incredible and the food is fine dining quality without all of the uptight fine dining vibes (or prices). Everyone that works here is awesome. The Campground was super full so we stopped in Voltaire for a drink waiting for our spot at Campground. It was an awful experience. I ordered a cocktail called Jamaican me Yeti. The idea of the drink is good. But it had so much rum in it that I could not even drink it. I passed it around to 4 other friends, including 3 dudes who are literal garbage disposals for alcohol, they all said it was not drinkable. I have never sent a drInk back in my life. I asked the female blue haired bartender about it and said it was too strong and I could not drink it. She proceeded to say nothing and hand me a glass of water. Praise be our table at the campground was ready. So my husband paid for the shitty drink which was left sitting untouched on the bar and the bartender who came up with the drink was an asshole about leaving that drink. WTAF. Terrible service. I have been here twice now. It has been AMAZING both times! My boyfriend and I like to sit at the bar and have a drink, eat and just talk to people near us for fun. We started off with a few different cocktails. They were all made right in front of us. He was more of a mixologist than just a normal bar tender. He pound out the ice, uses infused fruit, and chills their glasses before pouring the chilled mix drink in the glass. This is how a cocktail should be made. They surely did not fall short on that end. When we ordered our food, we requested the mussels and the risotto. They both were wonderful. The mussels came out still very hot and once tasted, very savory. It was served with a few slices of charred bread the soak up the delectable broth. The risotto is what really blew me out of the water. It was made with morels (my new favorite mushroom). It was so rich and perfectly cooked. When we went back the second time I ordered it again. It was just as good. For dessert, we ordered their spicy cookies. It is a weird spicy sweetness. It made the night fun and interesting. The "kickerdoodles" were my favorite. My first time the restaurant was slow because we went on a late night durning the week. The second time it was a Friday dinner. The service was wonderful both times. What a weird menu. Good-weird, but weird. I don't know of anywhere else in the city where one can find eggplant tamales next to mushroom phyllo pockets, or half a chicken listed below braised tongue. As one might expect from a menu so strange, the food packs a lot of flavor. The eggplant tamale I ordered was topped with mandarin oranges, fried bananas, green salsa, and black beans. There was so much going on with that dish that my tongue had a hard time keeping up. Cocktails are similar in style. I had a cocktail containing tequila, egg white, ginger, and green tea. Good? Hell yes. Weird? HELL YES. The vibe of the place is way cool, with low lighting, good tunes, comfortable seating, and an elegant bar. The only negative was that the appetizers, which are served in the style of tapas and sound absolutely amazing, cost nearly as much as some of the entrees. read more

Myself and four friends ate here on April 2nd while celebrating a handful of April birthdays. We decided to go family style so we could try as much of the menu as possible. We began with a round of cocktails. I ordered their Boulevardier but requested that the bartender make it with Aperol rather than Campari. I was politely told this was no problem and the resulting drink was excellently made. Call me what you will but I like a sweet finish with my rye. For our first "course," everyone at the table ordered a dish and we proceeded to split each item evenly over the table. I'll review each dish below: Chile Relleno, Crab filled - holy decadent and rich. This was absolutely delicious. By the end we all just wanted to pick up the last bit of our hands and bite right in. P.E.I. Mussels and Calamari - exactly what you would expect. These were cooked well but the real highlight here was the bread and thai coconut green curry that filled the boat. The freshly grilled crusty bread and the sweetness of the coconut was a perfect finisher. We had to ask our server for more bread to really get after it. There was a quesadilla special last night that we tried, which was also quite good but the ingredients are eluding me. Perhaps beet and kale served with a sweet-savory sauce that paired nicely. A member of the table also ordered the soup which I was unable to try but the reviews on that end were all positive. We finished our cocktails at this point and ordered a bottle of red to go with our second round of selections. Trofie Pasta - this was amazing. I'm a bit biased as a life-long carb fan but the flavor here paired with the egg was perfect. I would swim in a pool of this stuff and die happy. Steak Diane - oddly enough this was my least favorite that came with my highest expectations. Hanger steak can be a little tough but some places really do it right. At Voltaire, the meat just wasn't tender enough for me to rate it highly. Banh Mi - first and foremost, I was surprised that this dish is quite literally a sandwich. While good, I think some time spent reimagining this dish would serve it well. All of the ingredients fit together as planned, I think I was just thrown by the fact it was served almost deli style. Fois Gras - We called this the Fois-ffle by the end of the night due to the unique way of serving the liver on a buckwheat and chive waffle. Very unique. I think ultimately my favorite way of crushing fois gras is on brioche with a little bit of pomegranate but this was an interesting remix and all in all, was quite good. There's one more dish in here that I'm forgetting or not recognizing from the current menu. We may have ordered another special. For dessert, the group went with the creme brulee, lemon tart and chocolate walnut cake. I would push new diners toward the first two as the cake was a little stiff and not as rich as we were hoping. Our service from host to bartender to server was timely, friendly and accurate. She did a wonderful job. All in all I would highly recommend Voltaire for drinks as their cocktail menu is well fashioned, or dinner. Yes. I love this place. Been a few times, twice for brunch, once for dinner. I prefer brunch, BUT I am a huge huge fan of brunch and may be biased The custom cocktails are fun and delicious I tried the green Maria with the korean ramen. Ramen needed a hint of citrus. Perfect complements to each other. I've had the pozole as well and it was slightly nostalgic, reminded me of moms. Though I would prefer that the yolk of the egg be runny - it would just kick it up a notch! Also needs a hint of citrus, squeeze of lime! Yes, I paired it with the Michelada.DUH!!!! For dinner we had an array of small plates, all very good, and while that was fun I still much prefer having my own plate and trying a bit of a friends. The only thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is that I don't think the service was that attentive. They weren't awful but for the type of place it is and the reputation they are trying to maintain I expected more from my server. I love the industrial bulbs, the bistro tables, adorable bathroom, dark woods, speak easy feel. Great place, really. Overall, great. However, it has a thick fog of hip smug-smog and their potato appetizer was so hot it might have been cooked in the core of the Earth. No joke, part of the roof of my mouth was burnt off trying to eat it. Otherwise, a good experience. read more
