Buyer beware when purchasing gift cards from this location. My son purchased $200 in Amazon gift cards here for Mother's Day, and unfortunately the cards appeared to have been compromised. When we attempted to use them, we were unable to access the funds. We contacted both Amazon and Vons, but neither was able to resolve the issue. While this may have been the result of gift card fraud rather than the store itself, I wanted to share our experience so others can be extra cautious when purchasing gift cards. This grocery store was so yucky. I used the restroom and it smelled worse than the Penn Station bathroom. It was honestly disgusting, straight pee that clearly hadn't been cleaned, maybe ever. It was disturbing. There should be air fresheners in there or it should be permanently closed for maintenance because this is a grocery store and knowing workers use these restrooms and then handle your food, it was awful. I have been ordering delivery from them since covid but within the last year things have gotten so bad and I kept biting my tongue not saying anything but now I've had it! I will never renew my membership once it's up!!! I order at least once per week and I have problems every week, although they give me refunds for the bad produce or missing items. It is difficult to locate how to communicate with the store management. If they understand the importance of reviews, someone will come across this at some point hopefully. I came to this location at around 6 PM on a Thursday went straight to the bakery department to buy cinnamon rolls for guests I was having the next morning. I spent over five dollars for four rolls, but didn't think much about it. It was a complete waste of money as they were not edible. I overlooked the frosting that was just plopped on top thinking I could spread it amongst the Rolls myself later. The worst of it was what came under the frosting. Over baked, unseasoned, bread like dough. Store management really needs to take a look at their bakery department. There's real sloppy work going on there and it is under staffed. It makes me laugh that this place is reviewed so low. But it doesn't surprise me at all. I usually try to avoid this place because it seems like they hire the rudest people they possibly can. But because I had to go to UPS and the post office this is where I chose to spend my money. I thought I'd get my mom a chicken breast and got the combination. When it came to the salad because I didn't recognize what it was or what was in it I didn't want it to touch the other food, because it might have nuts, but I was told I cannot have it packed separately. Anything in another container would have to be Wade. It's not mine and a part of the combo unless it's jammed into the box with the chicken and the potato. I was spoken to by Dejon. Who apparently didn't like the way I pronounced his name as if it was the mustard even though it is Dejon. He corrected me in the way I was saying it so I thought he was saying tejon but that was not the case. We repeated it back-and-forth six times just to decide that I was saying his name correctly, but maybe not the way he liked. And he was the a hole that told me I can't have it packed separately because, why? It's so outrageous that I want it on the side? So I'm glad this place has terrible reviews already and I really don't frequent it very often because each time I do, I just meet another a hole that works here. read more

Went to the pharmacy for flu and Covid shots. It was a great experience and will definitely go there again, but this review is mostly about the wine cellar next to the pharmacy. I noticed they had bottles of Blanton's which is one of my favorite bourbons of all time. It is a tier below Pappy which is considered the best bourbon in the world. You see Blanton's in tv shows and movies constantly. The bottle catches the eye. The person at checkout said it looks like something Captain Jack Sparrow would drink. I rang the bell to get someone to open the wine cellar. Rang it 3 times over a 5 minute period and then asked the bakery to call the front. The bakery had to call twice to get someone to arrive. Took about 17 minutes. Finally someone did and was surprised that the refrigerator was on and that it was pretty cold in there. It's not good to refrigerate bourbon because you lose the flavor and aromas which can be diminished by the cold. Price was pretty good for Blanton's. I have seen it priced much higher in other spots and lower at places like Costco and Rally's. Trick is finding a bottle. They are sometimes hard to come by. It's like Pokémon for adults lol. read more

The Floral Manager Lilly, and her Floral Assistant Ruby are absolutely the best that I have ever experienced at a Vons location! When I discovered that helium was banned in Encinitas, I was in a major jam... I needed to get balloons for an important event, and time was running out. I called Lilly, and she was so helpful over the phone. She was able to answer all of my questions regarding my order and even gave me pricing and a time frame. When I arrived, Ruby was already briefed on my order, and she was amazing! She was so accommodating when I asked her to adjust the size of the balloons and to use a certain color scheme with the ribbons. She was pleasant, respectful, professional, and extremely personable... She went above and beyond the call of duty by wrapping trash bags around the different bunches of balloons for easy transport in my car. Ruby was an absolute breath of fresh air, as she is the type of employee that restores your faith in the art of customer service. Both Lilly & Ruby need to be promoted and given a raise, because they are a huge asset to Vons Corporation! Vons seems to put disrespectful morons in charge at the La Jolla Girard Ave and UTC Reagents Rd. locations, so hopefully upper management at the Alga Rd. & El Camino Real location have the wherewithall to realize that they have 2 gems in Lilly and Ruby! read more

The store itself is good. Prices are pretty reasonable, the food you get there is good, and the staff here is really friendly and helpful. The reason I don't rate it any higher is that almost every time I buy a gift card there, it almost always is damaged and you aren't able to redeem it, so it feels like they are trying to scam you. While they have helped me get a refund on damaged gift cards, they should just have gift cards that aren't damaged in the first place. To sum up, don't ever buy a gift card here. Though formerly a great store and better than other Vons stores in the area, this store has gone downhill since Covid and now regularly lacks merchandise. One element of their new M.O. is to offer a considerable discount for quantity purchases, forcing customers to buy 3 or 4 boxes of such items as cereal or soda. But then they often have fewer than the minimum quantity in stock, forcing customers -- who often wanted only one or two -- to buy at the (much) higher price. Stock is often a problem, making it feel like shopping in Eastern Europe and feeling lucky on a day when items are available. Self checkout is quirky and inconvenient. All in the name of profit, I suppose. Two stars for "better than nothing". read more

This may be the worst run Vons I've ever been to. It's without a doubt the worst run grocery store in Carlsbad. Listen, there are some really nice staff at this location. I've been coming here for years and it's walking distance from my house. But this place is poorly run. Here's why: - the credit card processing software is often broken. It's been broken twice this week alone. Someone said to me "it's a local thing happening everywhere " when I had just come from a nearby Trader Joe's and coffee shop that had no issue. - stock is super inconsistent and it's not just a pandemic thing. Nearly every time I go to this location they are out of something. For years it was little things: popcorn we like, garlic bread, certain types of apples. I'd do a shopping and it's one or two things that aren't there but we need and I have to make another trip. It's always something. Now that we have pandemic-related issues, it's so much worse. And it's so much worse than any other grocery Listen, I really like some of the people working here. Jeanne especially is great. But this grocery store doesn't deserve my business. Do yourself a favor and go to the Gelsons, Ralph's, or Sprouts nearby. They have better stock and the store works. I'm out. read more

I like that this place has a great floral section, the organic produce section is not bad, and the cute little shopping carts help me make grocery shopping with my kids a bit more bearable. However, I feel like the selections for their products are a bit limited, especially in the international food section. The meat department lacks a lot of types of meats and when I ask the butcher, they said that they don't have any in the back, so I always end up skipping Von's when I want anything specific. I think it can be improved a lot if they focus more on broader range of products. read more

I have to give kudos to the bakery at the Vons on El Camino and Alga. My daughter was recently married a few weeks ago and she chose to get her cake at Vons. I of course was none to happy about that. My thinking that it was a grocery store cake. Yuck! I checked around a few bakeries in the area and the moment you said wedding the price shot up 300%. I was also concerned because they do not deliver the cake and set up for you. I ordered her cake a few days before the wedding and was told I could pick it up on Saturday morning. When I arrived I was shocked at how beautifully simple and elegant the cake looked. It was very heavy also. My sister in law held the cake in her lap and I drove like I was a student driver so the cake wouldn't tip. We bought fake flowers and decorated it ourselves. It was so pretty. But let me tell you, when we cut into that cake and served it, man oh man. It was so moist and delicious. So if you want simplicity with a touch of elegance, go to a Vons bakery. $79.99. I order online from Vons.com frequently and occasionally I get missing items, wrong items or things are out of stock, all to be expected at times. Yesterday I had a large order and several items were out of stock. I received a call from Jim at the store (never has happened before) expressing their apologies and wanting to make good on my items. Today Jim called me again, and with the help of John the store manager, my now in stock items are being delivered without another delivery/bag fee! Excellent customer service! Always not enough lanes open. Lines go into the aisles. Seem to be way understaffed for at least a 2-3 years now. Super small & crowded space. Basically worst grocery store ever if you want to run in and grab something. They have self checkout but of course no alcohol is allowed so you have to wait in the long lines. My previous review focused on the Pharmacy which remains really good. This review focuses on the grocery store, and it's not well managed. Very short staffed and this issue has been an enduring problem. Result: Checkout lanes often wrap into the freezer sections. Produce section people fill in as cashiers but they don't know what they're doing and cause issues (no training). Deli can't stay open until after 5 due to staff shortages. Running out of items so they fill shelves with the wrong items to make it look less empty, as though that fools customers. While most of the workers there are very nice, there is one checker who is so negative and hostile we've learned to avoid her. If she's having one of her bad days we hear about how the management is bad, she's not paid fairly, and that she was a teacher. All may be true but she's forgetting we're CUSTOMERS and don't want the hostility. She needs help or coaching or something. Again, just not well managed here. Oh yes, it's very expensive. High price point but not high customer service. Difficult to keep going there. read more

Because of the Covid-19 crisis they are very low and limiting number of household supplies. Their paper aisle as of now was practically bare. I just stopped in to grab something for lunch as I work in the same plaza. I was thinking a sandwich or calzone. I grabbed the calzone and then saw they had ready made sushi and it was being prepared fresh as well. I talked to the lady making the sushi and asked if they had something with masago or tobiko which are different fish eggs, she said and showed me their beautiful poke bowls that had both kinds of fish eggs. She also showed me the different types of bowls. They have regular with rice, spicy with rice and then both options with a salad instead of rice. I'm currently finishing it at work and it's amazing! Actually better than most poke restaurants I've been to. The salmon and everything else is so fresh and the rice is seasoned perfectly. I paid $10 for something that can be two meals but it was so good I couldn't help myself and ate it all. I have a feeling that I'm probably going to have this once a week. Every worker at this Vons was very nice and even in the craziness of this corona virus hysteria they are very accommodating and make sure you get everything you need. :) Thank you! read more

I was there tonight at 10:30pm with some friends and he was the only checker open as the self checkout was closed for the evening. Obviously being the only available cashier his line was getting a little long and he handled it like a champ even when a woman came up to criticize stating how the line was "really long" and the self checkout was closed. I would never shop at this store again. I have been using Vons app to redeem $5 off for over $50 purchase. Couple weeks ago, I grabbed -$60 worth of canned water the cashier wasn't sure if purchasing water qualifies the savings. And brought manager to confirm. They both weren't sure if that was the case and asked me if I read the fine print of the terms. Are you kidding me? I asked them if they read it. They weren't sure and would not honor the savings. This Vons has a good self check out area. It's speedy and wasn't bothering me with unexpected item in the bagging area. The Vons brand is part of the Safeway family so your Safeway number should theoretically work. I even managed to find super glue here that I needed to repair something for my shoes. read more

Vons has a wide selection, good prices, lots of specials, a good deli and bakery, plenty of specialty desserts, and this location in Carlsbad is very clean. They always have stock. I like Vons for my grocery shopping, Sprouts for just vegetables and fruits, Ralphs, Albertson, and Staters are all close second after that. read more
