For a year, I've been eating the Service Deli's chicken pot pies from Stater Brothers. Fabulous better than I could make myself giant pieces of chicken breast giant pieces of dark meat perfectly cooked. They look beautiful. I had company last night. I got three because they're big enough for two people to share one and there was no chicken in them at all they were burnt. We cut them open and it was like mush. I've never seen anything like it. I was buying baby food, you know as any normal dad should, but oh no. Being a male buying baby food is now looked down on and I'll be told "as long as you don't grab a cart and empty the shelf". In recent years, I have been doing most of my grocery shopping here. When i first moved to this neighborhood, this seemed like the higher priced store, but then the Vons and Albertsons in the area got more expensive and made Stater look cheap. Not to mention that the last time I went to the Vons nearby (Alga and El Camino Real), 4 out of the 5 items I bought turned out to be out of date and bad, so i never went back. Stater Bros.' Full Circle and Cravin brands have also become a staple for me. I only knock this location down a star because they have spells of running out of items I buy frequently and I have to go to the Encinitas location to get them. I don't know what people are talking about when they complain about the people who work here in their reviews. I have had nothing but pleasant experiences and encounter helpful people. Are they even reviewing the right store...the right chain? I see people talking about "the customer service people" and they don't even have that. My husband and I decided to walk to Stater Bros to get pie for Thanksgiving after having dinner at Pure Burger. My husband wears a backpack sometimes if we go out after work because he has his work items and does not want to leave them in the car. We were approached by this girl who was also the cart attendant asking "Can I check your bag" and my husband said "Sure!". After she checked it, she mumbled "Did you take it out or something" and he said "I'm sorry what was that?" And she started walking out the doors saying again "Did you take it out" while walking away with her back turned to us. First of all, you should be pretty confident when approaching someone to search their bag. Second, when someone lets you search and you clearly find nothing, look them in the eye and apologize. Do not cowardly walk away mumbling with your back turned especially when we asked what you said. That is very rude! When we were in line to check out, my husband saw that girl next to the register and he asked "What were you saying out there?" And she started stuttering and mumbling again. It was a very awkward situation and clearly she had no idea what she was doing or talking about. The manager J, was the one ringing us up and we explained the situation to him. He apologized to us and it was nice of him to do so though it was not his fault. After that experience, it just put a bad taste for Stater Bros here. read more

Mario from the meat dept. is absolutely amazing! Right before Thanksgiving we needed a prime rib. We were at a different store having a pretty bad experience with poor customer service. My husband called Stater Brother's, store 186, and in 20 seconds flat Mario had put our minds at ease! He said he would prepare, de- bone and repackage our prime rib and hold it with our name on it! We got to Stater Bros. and Mario knew who we were and brought out our beautiful prime rib and a packet of seasoning! Amazing customer service! Mario created a small town feel in a big box chain! I had a nice visit to this Stater Bros. Market where I picked up a couple of 24 packs of their bottled water, some avocados at .99 each, one Dungeness Crab at $6.99 per pound for that avocado and crab salad later. I notice that they offered a reasonable price on Happy Egg free range eggs so I picked up a dozen for $3.99. If I remember correctly, the water was prices at $2.50 per 24 pack plus tax and CRV of course. The store was bustling when I came in and the employees were busily stocking and keeping the register lines flowing. I was please with the friendly customer service I received at the seafood meat counter when I picked up Mr. Crabs. The Dungeness crab was precooked so preparing the avocado crab salad when I arrived home was pretty easy and quick. They did a great job cooking the crab meat to a tender touch and keeping its sweet flavor. The produce department was pretty well organized and stocked, and although I did not need any, they had a great deal on bananas. I had a lady at the register and she was nice. Apparently they say they are requiring masks but they aren't. Saw 3 people last Saturday in line to pay that were not wearing masks. I asked the checker if the store manager would say something to them, and she shrugged her shoulders and said they really don't enforce that rule. Not the best selection for organic produce, but the prices are still very reasonable in comparison to other grocery stores nearby. This place is well maintained, clean and has large aisles. Prices for poultry seems to be very reasonable, but not a fan of their fish selection. I wasn't thrilled to see that they had a lot of Farm-raised, dyed salmon but it also looked like they were out of the Wild Alaskan salmon that day as well. read more

THE BAD I order half a pound of potato wedges from the deli, and the older lady that was helping me seem like she was in a bad mood. She said let me know when to stop filling the bag ... i asked her to use the weight scale but she could not be bother. The final weight was a little over and i was ok with it ...... My favorite grocery store: tied with Trader Joe's. Since it's in the same parking lot as my favorite Trader Joe's, that's actually a good thing. A symbiotic relationship, if you will. First off, their meat section is amazing. Always fresh, always plentiful, and always something great on sale. The guys behind the counter are super helpful and friendly and they know their stuff. They will help me pick cuts, grind meat for me if I ask, give me tips and ideas for cooking the meat, and even teach me about the different cuts. You simply can't beat the amazing service, selection, quality, and prices. They have a pretty darn good selection of wine for a grocery store including your standard cheap & mid-ranged well-known wines, as well as some less common vineyards and varietals that you don't typically see distributed in grocery chains. And it gets even better... their 'bulk deal' is amazing... if you buy at least four bottles you get 30% (as in ONE THIRD-ish) off! (Compare that to the standard buy 6 to get 10% off that the main grocery chains offer, and then say it with me: WOW! What a steal!) Their produce section is pretty big and extensive. They even have a local section which will have seasonal fruits such as loquats that i've never seen sold in a grocery store of this type before. They have lots of hard to find ethnic and/or gourmet produce as well, such as lemon grass and purple, orange and green cauliflower. Their selection on everything else is pretty extensive as well. I love their hot sauce section, and their asian/eastern food section especially. They have a lot of items you'd normally have to drive to a gourmet or ethnic specialty store to find. Don't get me wrong - they have just as an amazing selection of American food products as well including gourmet and organic options - this store just has everything. I love it. The parking lot has plenty of room, and I never have a problem getting in and out. The staff are all super friendly and helpful, and the check-out lines are kept under control. They're really good about opening new check stands when needed. Oh, and they have a red box inside too. Extra bonus. I only wish we had stores this great in my own neighborhood. They also consistently have the best prices for meat products like beef, chicken and pork. The fish is average (we prefer traveling to Clairemont to get the freshest and best prices at Ranch 99). I do love this shopping center since there's so many good places, including Trader Joe's, Pick Up Stix, Rubio's, and Board & Brew. Lot's of parking too! They've got a salad and soup bar, and I get their orange/Asian chicken from the hot foods section (it's a hit or miss, sometimes its overcooked, or there's not enough sauce, but it's pretty good when they make it right), I've also gotten their pre-made salads (I like the broccoli cashew one). It's nice when they can ring me up at the deli counter (they can't ring up fruits and stuff that are weighed though) sometimes. Other times, the check out lines can get long. We used to shop at Ralph's. Have for 25+ years. It's under 2 miles from our home, but they've changed. They changed management and it changed the store. That, and it's always crowded. Now we drive close to 10 minutes to shop here. It's always organized, the selection is great, it's spacious, and clean. It's totally worth the drive to not have shopping for groceries be stressful. I spoke to the manager on duty the other day, I believe her name was Felicia, as I was complimenting her on how she has handled an older grumpy customer. We have been going here since they opened, and most of the time there are no issues. Today however the butcher/butcher's apprentice wasn't using gloves when he dug into the pile of bacon we had requested. I generally avoid any type of standard supermarket filled with aisles and aisles of pre-packaged food, in lieu of going to smaller chains like Trader Joe's and Sprouts. Occasionally, I do need an item that I can't get at my regular stores and I have to go here. It can be a bit overwhelming with 30 aisles of miscellaneous stuff -- and far too many choices of the same item... (do we really need to have 12 different kinds of green beans?) But my last few trips have been fairly pleasant. I needed green chiles to make chili verde and hominy to make posole. Thankfully they were located in the same aisle and were on sale so I ended up with a gallon-size can of hominy for the price of a regular one--lol! And surprisingly, the produce section is very fresh and offers a lot of variety. While I don't come here for my regular produce trips, it's a great, convenient place to fill in and get those things I need for a recipe. And it's open late! :-) read more
