This is the worst Vons I have ever shopped at. I've had to return food twice and once found a dead rat in the parking lot. I hadn't been since the rat incident over a year ago and went again today. The store looked better but when I got to the meat department I realized nothing had changed. All of the steaks and roasts where brown turning grey. I am very surprised at this place, I love Vons and shop at other stores all the time. This is just horribly run and might actually be unsafe. This is the only store I know in this entire city and all of its' surrounding cities that is always short on people. Without a doubt there is always a loooooooong line with only 1 or 2 cashiers working. I have walked out due to frustrarion 3 out of 5 times I stop there. Very tiny store with poor selection. I went to pickup a few items. First, I went to the produce section to pick up a few tomatoes, but they were all covered in fruit flies. I had to shake them off. Then, I went to the dairy section, which was almost completely depleted. Finally, I went to get some Lean Pockets, and they only had 3 varieties in stock. On my previous visit, I saw luncheon meat that was left in the magazine rack at checkout. I hope that was thrown away and not returned to the shelf. The staff is friendly on a positive note. With Gelsons directly across the street, Whole Foods just three blocks away, and Trader Joe's about two miles away, Safeway needs to step up their game significantly with this Vons location. I have been shopping at this location since I moved to Tarzana and have always been able to find everything I ever needed. Excellent store.

Took me 10 minutes to check out today, despite the fact that there were only three customers ahead of me with less than 10 items apiece. The cashier literally left for a bit to do a price check that his bagger could have done. The cashiers are usually pretty friendly, but today's cashier didn't even talk to me, ignored me when I said hello, and then gave me no Monopoly things even though I was entitled to 26 of them (when I asked, he gave me 11 of them). If you're here on the weekends, expect only two cashiers - one at the express lane, one at the regular lane. If you are in any kind of hurry, go to Gelsons next door. Their manager always supervises the lines and ensures that his store is adequately staffed. read more

I ordered a cake from the bakery and even pre-paid for it on the spot. I showed up when it was due to be ready for pickup & they had no record of the cake!!!!! They couldn't even tell me if it had been baked or not. To make matters worse, they gave no apology & were in fact quite rude. After demanding a refund, the employee had to call the manager several times, who by the way refused to come talk to me when I asked to speak with her, and finally a refund was given after 30 minutes of back and forth. Do not shop here if you want something you have paid for. Further proof that their bakery needs some serious adjustments, there was a lady behind me in line who told me she had to drive all the way back to the store because they had forgotten to put the plastic "Cars" figurines on her kid's birthday cake (so she said it was just a cake with roads drawn all over lol). This Vons is one right near my home and I couldn't be happier that it's there. Every employee is so helpful and knowledgeable about their products! And they really listen to their customers! Once, I filled out a survey for a particularly awesome cashier, and at the end it asked me if I'd like to see any changes in the store. I mentioned that I'd like to see more dairy-free options as my entire family (me included) have trouble with lactose. I can finally find lactose-free cheeses, sour creams, chocolates, milk, and best of all a variety of ICE CREAMS!!! And all of it is a lot less expensive than the same product at Gelsons or Whole Foods. I'm a very satisfied customer. Thanks, Vons! read more

ABSOLUTELY!!! POSITIVELY!!! The WORST customer service I have ever encountered at a grocery store! They act as if it is the end of the world that they have to take care of a customer?! I visited this location on Friday, May 24th and ordered the regular wings that were on special for $5/per pound. I stressed to the guy that I did not want them if they were hot and he said these were not. I got home and tasted one and found that he gave me the hot ones. I immediately called and I supervisor by the name of Izzy was VERY HELPFUL!!! She told me if I brought in my receipt she would not only give me my $$$ back but also give me a correct order. I told her that was not necessary but she INSISTED! When I told her I could not make it back until Sunday she told me to just ask for a Manager and they would do so for me. I drove out of my way to go back there today and was told that they could not honor what Izzy told me that I would have to come back and speak with her. Karina, who works in that department, actually filled up a bag of the chicken and, then, dumped it right back into the bin right in front of me. Beyond rude...not to mention that it is probably a health code violation!!! She was extremely disrespectful and the manager on duty, Carlos, was gruff and gave the impression he hated life at Vons! I asked for the GMs name and he replied: "it's on the receipt!" WOW!!! I guess I will have to make a 3rd trip back to get what was PROMISED to me!!! THAT WILL LIKELY BE MY LAST TRIP!!! read more

I recently moved to the area and have always been able to find a vons/pavillions store near me that is a pretty good overall market to shop at. That is up and until now. This store has been a repeated disappointment for my family. I say repeated because I kept thinking the problems we have had here were just blips on the otherwise quality company I have known most of my adult life. I was wrong. From the terrible service (never enough checkers and always slow) to the three times I have had to return items after opening and realized they were unfit for human or animal consumption (this includes crab legs, a fish purchase and a bag of grapes with slimy mold at the bottom) to a older gentlemen bagger that could not grasp the concept of placing more than one item in each plastic store bag, even after being told twice that we had brought Our Own Bags-sitting right in front of him. I figured I would give it one more shot since it is right down the atreet from me. This was the last time! I went there was yesterday, shopping for a big dinner party I was cooking for. I parked to the side of the store in a shady area due to the heat and after standing in the only lane open for an over 15 imte order, for 15 mins, I was in a rush to get home. I hurriedly headed toward my car with a full cart in tow. As I got close to the parking spot I was in, the cart came to a painful jolting halt! Apparently they have there carts on lockdown so as not to go over a line, just there side of where my car was parked-as a result I ended up with a huge goose-egg on my shin where the cart and I collided with the sensor under the pavement. Ok-you are probably thinking I parked in a place I was not supposed to-Nope I checked, no signage saying not to park here for the store. Or maybe you are thinking what a goof, I didn't I see a sign saying the cart could not cross a line "here" Ah Nope I checked that too. RECAP Service-terrible-understaffed and/or improperly trained staffed Food Quality-sorely lacking Parking-awful mess of a lot with people heading in all directions without clearly marked lines for less competent drivers to follow.-Yikes Food Selection-terrible Fish department specifically- horrible!!! read more

I live right next to this Vons branch and have always been going there. I really like the staff at the register and they have supervisors who listen and care for the customers and always available. I shop here a couple times a week and its great. Parking always available close, and the store has nice produce, good specials, fresh bread and bagels in the morning, and friendly checkers, with a couple of lanes open so minimal wait. A mixed crowd shop here, alot of seniors, and also jewish people in the area which they always have out alot of holiday items for. I dont drink coffee my friends do and they love the starbucks inside right by the front to get their fix. CVS is next door so are beas and morts and a great chinese resteraunt. Vons blows circles around ralphs down the street whos long lines and slow checkouts and terrible parking lot are legendary. read more

I grew up in Tarzana (back in the 70's, 80's, and into the 90's) ... and my family always shopped at the local Vons. All those years ago it was a pretty nice store, well stocked, with good prices and friendly employees. These days I barely recognize the store. Most of the employees have foreign accents and don't seem to have been given much (if any?) training as far as "good customer skills." Service is slow and there are never enough checkout lines available. Employees don't even bother to say "sorry about the wait", let alone "thank you for shopping here." This is still an upper middle class neighborhood, but you wouldn't know it if you stopped into many of the local stores (including Vons). In fairness to Vons, though, the other supermarkets and drug stores in the area have been affected the same way - i.e. staff with foreign accents that are sometimes difficult to understand; rarely if ever a "hello" or "thank you" coming out of an employees mouth; store isn't even as clean as it used to be. Hard to believe this is still Tarzana, as the customer service in so many of our once friendly, professionally staffed stores is all but gone. Just because the demographics have changed shouldn't mean that the customer service should have as well. If I wanted to shop in a store managed by untrained, unfriendly, unprofessional, employees I would go to the neighborhood where I'm sure most of these employees reside. We all know what these big supermarkets are - mediocre and expensive. For this specific one I'll make it real easy for you: Category | to buy or not to buy Vegetables - never Fruit - on occasion dry fruit/nuts - yes cut fruit - mango and cantaloupe. the rest- not good to say the least. vons made food - not bad. but the isle section - not the deli one! in the deli one get the potato skins they're great when fresh, the rest - blah anything mass produced - sure. had no problem w expiration dates so far. decent selection of olive oil/canned goods/beverages and what not. fresh meat/fish/seafood - expensive - meat is ok, fish - horrible, shrimp - ok. staff is nice but not really worth the $ unless everything else is closed and you have no where else to go. they close at 12 and every day change the door you can enter from. annoying to say the least. read more

I found it's still open on Christmas day. So I went in and grabbed some chips and drinks. There were only 3 open lines and the lines were very long. That's fine as we all knew it's an important holiday. People waited in lines patiently until the cashier suddenly put 'Closed' label on one of the lines. She simply put it on the end of the conveyor and said 'line is closed' to the next customer who had been waiting in line for more than 15 minutes. We people in that line were all surprised by her. To our inquiries, she replied she's off, ask manager if you want. The manager was serving one of the lines and said there's no more staff to serve the line. We customers understood the fact. But the way they closed the line was completely wrong. The cashier should put the label on the cart of the last customer in the line when she believed that customer would be the the last one she served before she's off. The store doesn't even know the basic of running a retail store. read more

I never go to Vons and decided to stop by tonight at 9:00pm and so sorry that I did! First of all as I approached the door to enter, I read on the door: "We'll gladly open another register if there are 3 in line" and when I entered I saw the longest line I've ever seen in a market!! I had to laugh out loud because I noticed there were only 2 registers open. I walked by the line of annoyed customers and did my shopping. Everything was ok until I got to the produce section. Doesn't anyone work this section?!?! The grapes needed to be tossed, the raspberries were on their way out, the bagged avocados were extremely ripe and several had exploded from people squeezing them, and the zucchini were soft and sad looking! Then at about 9:30pm about 8 drunk 20 year olds ran into the store playing tag and throwing things at each other and no one did anything about it! I decided to head to the cash register to pay and the cashier, Jorge, was friendly and smiley. An annoying lady behind me kept asking Jorge if another line would be opening and after a few times he finally called out to a lady standing up front who I believe was the manager. She yelled at him, in front of everyone, they he needed to just wait because she had locked her keys in the liquor cabinet or something and the person who had keys wouldn't be in until 2pm so she was dealing with a lot!!! Everyone in line was in shock but Jorge and the bag boys didn't even bat an eye like they were used to it! WHAT A JOKE! SO UNPROFESSIONAL!! I feel sorry that these employees have to deal with someone that clearly can't handle stress and one who is supposed to be a leader and behaves like a whiny child! The few employees they had looked unhappy and exhausted and don't get me started on the people outside asking for money! Thumbs down to this store!!! I'm going back to Ralph's where there are always plenty of cashiers, beautiful produce, professional staff, and a security guard that keeps the idiots out so people can be safe and have a great shopping experience! read more

If I could I would give a negative star. I had such horrible experience with the supervisor. His name is Elario S. He was working the express line. Such a god awful customer service. If the supervisor is such rude person I see where the other employees get the attitude. A person like that should never interact with customers. This is the closes store to my house and that's why I stop there. I will not go back to this store and I hope that the supervisor gets put away in a closet where customers don't have to deal with his attitude. read more

I had the best experience with VONS head office and VONS Tarzana. I was very disappointed they removed the 'Signature Select' SESAME GINGER vinaigrette dressing as it is bar none, the most delicious dressing around. I called head office and the same day got a call from 'Christian' at the Tarzana store who thanked me for my years of loyalty and said they take this to heart and will be doing whatever they can to see if they can restock it. Frankly, I didn't think anyone would call only because it is such a large company, so why bother, but it has been a great, great experience and will remain a loyal customer. I've been meaning to post a review since the first time I shopped at this pathetically staffed store. There are a couple employess, baggers, and produce guys who are actually helpful, but the rest of the staff, management in particular are absolutely the WORST OF THE WORST . I never been in a grocery store where the customer service is outrageously bad. One of the bigger problems is the long lines.Day or night there is no more than 2 checkers ringing people up.Even when they notice how long the lines are they don't ever call for help.I usually end up bagging most of my own groceries whiule waiting on the one bagger they have working.This Vons has a poor selection of common products, filthy parking lot, and total disregard for customers. They are so insufficiently staffed that its impossible to find someone to help you with anything . On any given day you should expect very long slow lines, even the "express" line. Many times I've asked them to please get help so the lines will move quicker. The response has usually been, " We've got no one else,The manager won't hire more people, sorry" The employees, with the exception of a couple people, are AWFUL & RUDE. If you are using WIC, coupons, two forms of payment , or anything other than an easy cash or credit transaction, you will be annoying your cashier in return she will retaliate by going even slower and treating you like dirt. There are Several products I buy often that they don't carry and they are regularly out of gallons of water. Just last night I went for water and they had NONE-not a single gallon of ANY brand and refused to double check in the back for me. If God forbid you have to make an exchange or return prepare for the eye rolling. The reason I ever still shop here at all is that this is THE very CLOSEST grocery store to my home. With a busy life,job,3 kids it is sometimes the best solution for a quick dinner ingredient or milk. My hope is that enough people make complaints, something will change for the better. read more

I have been shopping at Tarzana Von's for over 20 years. Obviously people come and go and staffs change, but my wife and I have always had a relatively good shopping experience there. And, then there is a young man named Julio, who is one of their meat-cutters. Unbelievable guy. He is the BEST. I was looking for a certain steak last week, but all they had that day were about to expire that night. This terrific fella took 4 steaks from the fresh enclosure collection that were regular price and still kept the steaks at the sale price I was looking for.. He was so cordial and respectful.. I haven't met many like him in the meat sections of the various markets. I plan to only visit that meat dept. especially when he is on the clock...Bravo to Von's...You've got a good guy, there.... read more

This is my absolute favorite Vons store - even though I moved far away, I still drive back to shop at this store at least once a week. They have a fantastic clearance aisle in the way back of the store with some unusual products, not just groceries. I bought my kids really fancy looking remote controlled cars a few years ago for Christmas and I paid about $5 each, for these huge toys. read more
