I had heard mixed reviews about Voodoo and by "mixed", I mean mostly not good. So I've avoided going in LA and in Portland. But, when we sw they were near our hotel in Austin, we stopped by. We went with simple things - a glazed raised donut, bacon maple bars, and a sprinkle cake donut. I must admit that I was surprised. The plain, glazed donut was quite good. And the bacon maple bar was delicious. Both had a nice rise to them and a slightly chewy texture. The glaze was just enough on the glazed one and the icing on the bar was not overwhelming. After I tasted these, I kind of wished that I had tried some of the more elaborate donuts that they offer. The display case had all kinds of combinations. The reason for the three stars is that the restaurant was very dirty and it looked almost abandoned from the outside. It was strange because when you walked inside there was clearly a business there. My sister had the chocolate coconut cake, which she said was really good. She said she'd actually order it again. It's a devil's food cake donut with chocolate frosting and coconut flakes. As for options there is quite a lot to chose from. We had picked a variety of 6 donuts due to our short travel. I really like the looks of some of the donuts especially the "Marshall Mathers" with its colorful M&Ms. I had taste tested majority of them and I was a bit disappointing for it's hype. In all honesty, it's really good and priced well, but it's not any better than your local donut shop that's family run. I've heard the hype, so had to give it a try. Definitely kudos for creativity in flavor combinations and decorating. However, only one really stuck out to me as something fancy. Voodoo Doll: Looks to be the signature doughnut and sure is elaborate. I, personally, love the combination of red berry jelly filling with chocolate frosting. Not sure why this isn't done more often. The pretzel "voodoo pin" is a fun aesthetic touch, but doesn't add much flavor wise since it's one little stick. The voodoo decoration on mine were pretty mediocre at best. But thankfully I cared more about the taste than instagramming it. Old Dirty Bastard: Lots of Oreo bits on a doughnut with some peanut butter. Can get really messy real fast! It seemed like they went a bit overboard with the Oreos since that's all you could taste at times. Rose Pistachio: This was a surprise sleeper hit and probably my favorite. It looks like a cannoli, but is made of a doughnut shell and the filling is more custard like. That filling had a really strong pistachio cream flavor with real pistachios in the mix. And the rose sugar on the outside was so uncommon for a doughnut. Really fun combination! Diablos Rex: A chocolate cake doughnut covered in chocolate frosting with a fun pentagram drawn on top. I love cake doughnuts, so this was an easy win for me. Really hearty and great with coffee. Bacon Maple Bar: A maple doughnut with bacon on top is essentially like portable pancakes. The maple doughnut itself is kinda generic, like what you'd find in many local doughnut shops around the country. I heard the hype, seen all the food reviews on the Food Network and YouTube, so you know I had to get my hands on a Voodoo Doughnut! Plus it was a sweet treat from doing all the touristy things on 6th Street. When we arrived, the was a line all the way to the entrance! Well, since you're reading this review, that means I waited. Once inside, the wait was not too long (10-15 min) and there is plenty of interesting art and memorabilia on the walls to keep you entertained. We ended up ordering a few things: Couple cups of coffee and an expresso: The coffee is your standard diner fare coffee, but definitely hits the spot on those cold days. Their expresso comes in a tiny cup, as it should, and it's nice and strong! Bacon Maple Bar: Truly a Voodoo Doughnut "classic"! It's salty, sweet and yeasty. What's not to love? Raspberry Romeo: Perfect balance of sweet and tart. A great go-to doughnut if you prefer the stuffed variety. Viscous Hibiscus: This one also has a great balance of sweet and tart with the addition of texture from the addition of sprinkles. You can't go wrong! Guava Colada: One bite immediately transports you to a sunny pristine beach (if your first bite happens to be the side filled with guava). Unfortunately, the guava jelly in our doughnut was only concentrated near the opening. Overall, the flavor was great! We only wished the jelly was distributed more evenly. Ring of Fire: Many people probably look at this doughnut and think that's what their rear pucker will look like afterwards. Have no fear, this doughnut is not as spicy as it looks.
