I ordered a Voodoo Doll. I looked at it, laughed at it, then ate it. This isn't the first time. I've had one in Portland too. I walked up to the Pepto-colored storefront. Stood in line like everyone else. The cleverly named donuts were displayed in rotating cases. It's fun eccentric edible art. Consider this an experience, a treat if you will. My friend and I got lucky and were able to walk right in and snag a donut pretty easily. Some of the best donuts I have ever had in my entire life! The fact they have vegan donuts which literally don't taste vegan at all blows my mind. I like to eat non dairy and their vegan donuts are def in my top list of non dairy desserts. We were super excited to get our very own Voodoo Donut shop here at home now, but were waiting for the crowds to die down a bit before visiting. My son and I decided to go just after 9am and it was perfect. We ordered ahead on the app and were lucky to easily find a parking spot right out front. We walked up but a nice lady came to the door and said they would only be able to let in one customer per cashier and we would have to wait until one was free. I let her know we ordered ahead and she happily let us in. The woman at the cash register asked for my name and when I told her she smiled and said that's the one I'm working on right now! :) She went down the list, collected all our donuts and we were joyfully on our way. Easy peasy. It seems like a good idea to have folks wait outside so a line forms and those driving by see people waiting. Haha - good marketing! Inside the shop is all pink and you can see all the different donuts offered in a bright rotating glass tower. There are people making donuts on the side that can be viewed from the large window. First time ever visiting a Voodoo Donut Shop. I came to experience the hype. My review is the donuts are average price range but the sizes are big, I bought 1 surprise donut and merchandise. I love the experience more and customer service. The donut is sweet, soft, and tasty. I love you can see how the donuts are prepared prior to baking. They close at 3am which is crazy. This particular location has notoriously rude stuff who will just argue with you and won't admit their disorganized line management. They will just tell everyone to get out without considering little kids, people who were in line already or apologize for the screwup. Highlights: The beautiful and creative pastries alone make this place a minimum of 3 stars. Lowlights: I was personally disappointed by the following. First, the quality of the dough is a class lower than competing donut shops. It's not just that soft and feels dry. Second, and this might be a one-off, the cashier presented an extremely disinterested/disengaged demeanor while not acknowledging anybody who comes in, despite it being such a small space... which brings me to my final point, which is that there isn't much space to consume the pastries inside the store. If there were ample outdoor seating, this would be a non-issue. This review hurts my heart. My wife is from Portland and for years and I years I would swoon at the opportunity to grab a Voodoo Doll on our trips down there. Time went on and the trips became more infrequent and in 2021 I was surprised to see a Voodoo at Universal Studios in California. Dipped in for the usual and it was okay...but something was off. Had to just be California right? Wrong. A recent trip to Portland reversed they too were off. Interesting. What happened to the donuts I loved? So Seattle gets a location. Some of the flavors are delicious (the old dirty bastard is a favorite), some too sweet (butterfingerling), without flavor (churro) - and what really gets me is the fritters are straight up burnt and obviously so as they're black around the edges. I came late night the last time around so they had closed the lobby, so service was also lacking in that there was only a singular person working their window and despite having placed the order about an hour before arriving she still packed it after I showed up. First said total was $17 something then after she saw my friend and I fight to pay she said "wait it's not even ready" and then said it was $35. Never offered a receipt and I regret not asking.
