OMG these the best donuts I never had in my life. Yes, they are not expensive than a other donuts but these are totally worth it. There was a nice loft area, which was isolated enough to get work done but also busy for the ~coffee shop work sesh~ vibe. I was visiting Seattle and staying with a friend that lives in Capitol Hill and looked up breakfast and coffee shops one morning and stumbled upon General Porpoise and saw their malasada like donuts. They are like sugar donuts filled with custards and fillings. I got a box of 6 for my family that also was visiting Seattle. The flavors that day were vanilla custard, lemon curd, chocolate marshmallow, coconut cream, passion fruit curd, and apricot jam. Service was so quick, the person working was so helpful and got me in and out of there quickly. They have touch to pay. There's places to sit inside and hang out, nice chill spot to grab some coffee and donuts and catch up. There is street parking around the store too. General Porpoise always has a variety of 2-3 quality beans on the pourover, ranging from medium to light roast. They use a Kalita wave setup. The drinks are served in a Kalita carafe -- an upgrade from before when they used to brew directly into the cup itself. It generally costs around $6-7.5. This spot was on my list on a recent trip to Seattle. We walked here from our hotel and got here first thing in the morning. A staff member was setting everything up for the morning and he was so nice. It was hard to pick a flavor but being a lemon lover, I knew I had to try the lemon curd. I love a good malasada, and I was really excited to try General Porpoise because their donuts look so fluffy and yummy. I've been here a few times now, and while I still love the crunch of the sugar coating and the flavorful fillings, everything always tastes weirdly stale. Like they baked the donuts the night before and then just left them sitting out all night. It's only a faint flavor of staleness, but enough to make one question. I had a lobster mushroom quiche here once, and while it was also weirdly stale tasting, it was still pretty good. Wow. What a treasure this is. I came on a Saturday, and it was busy, but not a long line. Fresh delicious donuts. It's not like Dunkin' Donuts. Though the selection is limited (a half-dozen or so options), what they have is fresh and full of flavor. When I think of jelly filled donuts, I tend to think of stale donuts with neon-red insides made of all sugar. This is NOT the place to get that kind of donuts. The flavors are original and familiar. There was a tiramisu filled donut that was spot on in the flavor profile. I was impressed at the brewed coffee. The quality was top notch to go with a top notch donut. I've been curious about this spot after some people called a very hype donut shop just a fancier General Porpoise with better flavors. I was hoping that General Porpoise could become my quick donut stop if I was really craving one. However from my experience, the donuts can't even be considered the same food item. I took one bite out of my strawberry donut here and then threw it away. As someone who hates to waste food, this really shook me. Already from the case, the donuts look deflated, uneven, and just plain sad. I still thought that maybe they tasted better than they looked. I was WRONG. They were even worse than they looked somehow... The donuts were not fluffy and really felt as deflated as they looked. The sugar coating wasn't even on the donuts since they felt over-fried with too much oil. All I could really taste from the dough was oil. The filling was probably the only redeemable thing about the donut. I can tell GP uses high level ingredients for their jam, as they have fruit chunks and tastes like real fruit. However, I personally don't eat a donut just for the filling. I have no plans to ever come back, and I hope no one ever brings me a donut from here. I will not eat it. I usually don't get filled donuts, but had to come check out General Porpoise from a friend's recommendation. They have a couple locations that you can come in to visit, but we ended up ordering ahead for a pick up time at the Capitol Hill location so we could walk around afterwards. The shop is small but has a super cute interior that is clean looking. We ended up getting a box of the chocolate marshmallow, vanilla custard, and coconut. Pickup is super easy at the time requested. Donuts come close to $4 a donut so not the cheapest but seems on par with artisan donuts. You pick up indoors and you can eat outside at their bench or if you're a group less than 3 you can sit at their now open indoor tables. The donuts have a nice crunch on the outdoor exterior and the filling is sweet but not too sweet which I enjoyed. The donuts have a light sugar coating but so surprised at how mellow the sweetness was. That's always my fear when getting stuffed donuts that the amount of sugar would overpower the donut itself. Placing an order here for pick up is super easy and convenient. You can navigate to their website from their instagram or a google search. They have curbside pick up if you do not want to get out of your car because of social distancing or you have the option to wait to go into the shop, 3 at a time. They rotate speciality flavors every so often so if you are looking for a certain specialty flavor it is best to check their site before heading over or even better place your order before you go. If you are ordering later in the day, they also may run out of certain flavors which is something to be aware of. It was the end of the year when we placed an order for pick up and I was able to snag the eggnog, vanilla custard, raspberry jelly and lemon curd. Each had a very distinct filling and looked like a fluffy delicate pillow of dough. The doughnut was light, airy and a little salty. The amount of salt was more than I personally preferred which threw me off in my first bite but was something you just get used to. If you have a sweet tooth or enjoy eating doughnuts in general, I think you will really like this. The one thing you will definitely notice is they are little on the pricey side. $4 per donut gets up there if you are wanting to try one of each flavor (which you definitely should). My boyfriend and I ran here on a Friday morning, arrived around 9am and there were plenty of donuts still available. He had this place pinned for when he came to visit so it was a must! I'm a huge donut fan so I try them all over the country! I've discovered I'm more of a cake/crispy type of girl, but do enjoy certain yeast donuts. I wasn't super excited about these, but I was pleasantly surprised. He loves any filled donut so these were his jam! I was most excited for the chocolate marshmallow which sadly was my least favorite. It had a very subtle chocolate flavor with a hint of marshmallow. The filling mostly made me think of marshmallow. The nectarine/fig was both of our favorites, followed by huckleberry, lemon, and then vanilla. Appreciated nay having seeds in the huckleberry and the taste was on point! The Lemon definitely had some tartness to it, but in the best way possible! Overall, all the donuts were made pretty identical. Fluffy with some spots of undercooking. Very soft and dough like. They roll them in sugar crystals as well which is a little much for me. Depending on the donut, the filling to dough ratio just didn't do it. We often ended with no filling and just donut after a few bites. Again, I'm not a huge filled/yeast donut person so I can be picky. They were definitely good, but I probably wouldn't pick this over a blueberry cake. These just don't scream "donut" to me and are more pastry like.
