Vortex has pretty much been my second home for the past three years! I don't know a single person who doesn't love a good meal at the Vortex, and it's always fun to drag my friend who works for Harley-Davidson there on a Thursday night. The food is always way above par, the service is amazing (the only place that I've made more friends with the waitstaff is Atkins Park), and even though they allow smoking, it rarely if ever smells like the inside of an ashtray. The only downside is that, if you sit inside, it can be too loud to even hear youself speak. But honestly, when the food's this good, I don't need to say a work. read more

If i could give less than 1 star i would. I came to this location Monday with two friends. I ordered a well done burger and fries. When the food came all of our fries were cold. As the waiter is bringing the fries, we ask for a manager because i realized my burger was burnt. The manager Devlin (spellcheck) came over. I explained my issues, and she went on to ask how i got it cooked. I stated well done. She says "well that's just science, it will be burnt" rolling her eyes. I calmly asked her "not to get nasty with me about it, I wanted it to be well done meaning no pink" . She proceeded to grab the food my friend was eating, and told her to get off the property. I come here maybe once a year to treat myself to their Coronary Bypass burger. This burger is massive and can feed me twice so it's worth it. The tater tots and fries that come with the burger add the cherry on top. This burger is packed with 2000+ Calories so make sure you come dying for food. The staff is a hit or miss. My server had no idea what half the menu was when I asked and looked as if he was working in the kitchen. The food comes out fast so the service balanced it out. read more

This is a great burger joint, but didn't quite live up to the hype. Maybe it was because we went in to eat at around 5:30, but it was still fairly quiet. I was expecting it to be rowdy. I had two velvet skulls and was drunk for two hours. Those go down smoooooth; they were a perfect mix of cider and beer. We had the mac and cheesy-changas, which was a flour tortilla stuffed with barbecue pork and mac and cheese, deep fried, sliced into quarters, and then served on top of a bed of cheesy goo and barbecue sauce with a kick. It was delicious. Probably something someone came up with one night when they were drunk and/or stoned, but it was delicious. I had the Sriracha Lover burger, which was delicious but also kind of disappointing. I ordered it without the guacamole because I wanted it to be extra spicy, but it wasn't very spicy at all. It was more a burger with Sriracha on it than a "Sriracha Lover" burger. Still, it was an excellently cooked burger and it was delicious, even if it didn't quite bring the heat I expected. I was able to stay vegetarian with a great veggie patty substitute, while my wife chowed down on the epic Zombie Apocalypse. I was really, really looking forward to going here- we drove 2 hours to restaurant surfing in Atlanta for our anniversary and hitting up places we'd never gotten around to trying, and we'd chosen the Vortex for a late lunch. Service was A++, we saw some customers come in after us being total complete douchebags (I was about to strangle them) and they were still polite to them and came back to our table in a good mood. We had the dumpling things as an app, and they were fricking delicious. I wish we had just gotten 3 orders of those. We ended up splitting the triple coronary or whatever it was giant double burger w/egg, bacon, & grilled cheese, and it was mediocre at best. The fries & tater tots were clearly plated way before the burger was ready- both were cold and chewy and the cheese was a coagulated goo the consistency of cold margarine. The place wasn't even busy- if it was I might possibly understand. The burger patty itself was delicious- great job. Wondernoms all the way. The grilled cheese was super fake plastic cheese and the bacon was chewy and vaguely reminiscent of waffle house bacon. I ended up just eating the patty out of my part. If they want to serve that as their super awesome mega burger, they should really consider making it worth the 26.00. I could see paying 13 or 14, but I was looking forward to a masterpiece of gluttony and was sorely disappointed. I'm guessing the kitchen just had an off day....? I will probably give them another chance next time I hit up Little 5, but I for damn sure will not be dropping 30 bucks for a burger. read more

I love the food here however the last two times I came through the hostess was awful and each time it was a different hostess. It made me think that it could be their "shtick" so I asked...and it's not. Sad that the employee you spend the least time with who's at the entry level of the restaurant can ruin the entire experience. I love this place. A lot. Being raised by bikers (likened to being raised by wolves), my parents would frequently drag me to bars all over town so they could drink and party with friends and so I could have the bar experience before I was old enough to drink. Thus, I enjoy this bar NOT for the alcohol, but for the actual place itself. Since then, and probably because of me, the Vortex has changed its rules and does not allow anyone under the age of 18 in the door. Please keep this in mind. You CANNOT bring your children here. Don't try to. It's not a "family" environment. It's not a "family" establishment. Yes, they serve food... but it's so you can consume something while you're drinking to help absorb and digest all that liquor you're downing. Plus, all the old, dirty bikers (whom I love BTW, you know who you are) don't want to listen to your 4 year old scream about how much they hate ketchup. And you don't want your kid pissing off an old, dirty, biker. Seriously. Now that we're on the same level... dude, this place is awesome. A really cool atmosphere; random collections and awkward antiques cover the walls and ceilings. If it's your first time, I recommend reading the entire menu from cover to cover before doing anything else. They call themselves an "Idiot-Free Zone" and a "No Whining Zone". The staff is as friendly as they can be, but if you have a case of verbal diarrhea and start acting like a jerk, or complaining about something no one has any control over -- you can expect to find yourself outside on the sidewalk very shortly. No one cares if you don't like the annoying strippers two tables down. And no one cares if you can smell the cigarette smoke coming in through the door from the smoking area. If you don't like it -- LEAVE. There WILL be someone else who wants to sit at your table, spend their money and NOT complain. You will not be missed. The menu is amazing. It's huge. it has everything you could possibly imagine and more. They have breakfast all day. Look at that HUGE burger menu! Don't eat beef? That's ok - me either. Pick any style burger you want from the burger menu, and you can get it with Bison, Turkey, Chicken or a Veggie Burger Patty instead. YUM! On the side, the Tater Tots are great and remind you of your school days. The French Fries, Onion Rings, and Sweet Potato Fries are great as well. I've been a vegetarian for 8 years, but I've been coming here for at least 10 years. I've had just about everything on this menu, and I have never been disappointed. Everything is really good. I've been to both Vortexes now, twice each. I have friends who are rabidly obsessed, so I indulge them and go to The Vortex from time to time. I don't share their fervor, but neither would I say that The Vortex sucks, because I don't believe that either. I'd give it 3.8 stars, if that were possible. Now, the hype for the place, I truly don't get it. I mean, I guess there's something to be said about a place that has been around for a while, and has extreme fans that are frequently there. That being said, I feel like if you asked me to tell you about a distinguishing characteristics on either the clientele or the servers I could say this with candor: generally, they all look the same. I guess that is a part of the Vortex's charm, and I don't fault it for that; it is known for its trendy and hip clientele. The food here, in my opinion, is not bad. I would even say that their burgers are good. The rest of the menu is only so-so, as far as I've experienced it. I'm just not so sure if their prices accurately reflect the way the food tastes here. They seem to be a little full of themselves in terms of their reputation, but I get the feeling that is exactly the kind of vibe they're going for. If you come here expecting to be seated any time soon, then you are in for a surprise. There are no reservations here, but they have usually been able to seat us at the bar pretty quickly. And I don't mind that at all. Maybe the bar tenders are more focused on getting drinks for people than refilling my water, but the service was friendly, and the bar tenders/servers amicable enough.
