First time giving W.H. Ales a try and I have to admit, my mind refers to it as "Whales"! We had drinks (very well crafted), appetizers and mains. The Burnt Ends appetizers were delicious and a perfect balance of meaty/fatty. My girlfriend ordered the Fish and Chips, which were delightfully flaky and tasty. I was curious and ordered the Reuben pizza, which was equally delicious. The crust was different and a perfect match to those toppings, I didn't think I would like it as much as I did! Service was attentive and quick, and the ambience definitely made us feel that we could host a party here. Good for small to medium sized groups for sure! With four drinks, dinner and appetizers, the total damage before tips came to $95, which corresponds completely with the quality of the food and ambience provided. read more

This was potentially the highlight of our visit to Bay City. The space is massive and there's all kinds of different options for enjoying a drink. There is ample bar seating available, and multiple booths and tables as well. Our server was a polite young lady who took the time to patiently take our orders and make sure that we had everything we needed. We happened to be visiting during happy hour, which enabled us to get a few beers at half price. Their beer options are terrific, and I was particularly impressed with the cherry wheat. We had dinner as well. I ordered the potato soup and a plate of burnt ends. Both were absolutely delicious and very well prepared. I found the price is reasonable for the quality of food that we got. After we finished our meal we did a bit of exploring including the live space ad just sent to the restaurant, which was fun to visit and we were told gets crowded on weekend nights. We also took a quick tour of the brewery area and enjoyed visiting with the proprietor. I hope this place continues to do well, they have a wonderful product and great people read more

Ridiculously slow service. Waited 30 minutes for a glass of wine. Asked for 2 different Cabernets from the very limiyef "by the glass" menu and was told they didn't have them.... After they had to go to the basement to check. I was Offered pinot grigio and chardonnay(white wines) as alternatives? When I finally settled for a merlot, it was slammed down in front of me in a dirty glass with lipstick on it. Appetizer was also slammed down on the table. Had to ask for plates and the sauce. Food was below average. Bathroom was gross. Service horrible. Only saving grave for this place was the cigar bar downstairs. read more

Not a good experience. Ordered the charcuterie pizza. Menu stated it had mozzarella, prosciutto, salami, capicola and pepperoni. Sorry for only a two piece picture but the only toppings I could find were pepperoni and some prosciutto. In addition the picture on the yelp site showed a Reuben pizza which was not on the menu and looked nothing like what we received. My recommendation would be if you like craft beers you may want to give it a try... read more

Stopped in town overnight on the way up north for a few days. Wanted to try a local spot and this one popped up when we got in the car. Really cool spot in an old building. Staff was super friendly and the food was really good. Stand out item for us was the ginormous brewhaus pretzel. Thing was massive and delicious. We where there for 2 hours and only got checked on like 3 or 4 times at most only got like 2 refills took about an hour to get our food and another 20 minutes for our receipt and she took it out of my hands as I went to look at it and said just kidding and never came back with it probably the worst service at any restaurant I've been too and I think there should be more than 1 person to run the bar and the bootbut the food was good otherwise wasn't really worth almost $60 read more

This was our second time coming to whales, our first time was on a weekend around 8 busy but great service. we showed up about 4:30pm on a Tuesday and it was light seating (2 two tops and one at the bar were filled). We sat ourselves and waited about 20 min for someone to come by with menus and didn't take our drink order (it was a very hot day). He explained a few people had called off and he was the only one so we had a warning and was ready for a little extra wait. After about 5:18 we got our drinks and 2 apps put in that came out quick (parm. bites, spinach artichoke dip with pita, very satisfied with these). We ordered our second drinks while we ate our apps. we waited for our server to come by around 30 min and he told us one of our drinks couldn't be made because they didn't have the product in stock. We ordered a different drink but my party decided to try our chances elsewhere with the entrées. The server said his apologies and he gave us the drinks free of charge. He was very friendly and apologetic about the pace of service. Although, while doing service there didn't seem to be a sense of urgency and wasn't very attentive. We will definitely be giving this place a try again because of the high quality food, but maybe so on a busier evening. read more

Service sucks. Blonde bartender never came back with my change after charging for drinks until I had to flag her down. Grabbed a attitude. My money blew across the bar, couldn't get the blonde over to retrieve it. Guy next to me went, knocked over some misplaced glasses while retrieving the blown cash. I got thrown out as they kept my cash. This is a place to avoid unless you like bouncers working with bad bartenders full of arrogance and attitude, kicking you out after stealing your cash. No bar foot rail, felt weird, liked it better years ago under previous ownership. Will never go back. Went to another place, had more fun, 1/2 the price for stiffer drinks, better clientele..for the money I recommend Lucky's instead of whales. read more

Jalapeño Popper burger was fantastic! It was massive! I hope you're hungry! My wife had the Rueben. It was equally as good! Service was spot on! Our server's name was Sam and she was clearly a pro! She was at the top of her game! She made our first experience at W. h. Ales a very good experience! This place is ideal for a date night or a fun night out. Service: the guy was very nice but I wanted a taster of one of the beers, and he brought me the biggest glass of the beer they serve. Food: my cauliflower crust pizza came on the cool side of warm, the toppings were good but no real flavor to the sauce, just tasted like it came from a can from Walmart. The cauliflower crust I know can be hard to cook sometimes but it was extremely flimsy and almost tasted uncooked. Vibes were good but they had a car race on every channel, no different options. I probably won't come back just from the food/service experience but I recommend anyone try it and make their own opinions. read more

Best pizza my wife and I have had in Bay City by far. We've been disappointed with so many of the other pizza places in town. You can tell in your first bite that they use fresh ingredients. My wife and I sat at the bar and the young woman who served us was very personable and attentive. Definitely will be back. read more

The drinks were good, the food was not great at all, but we only had the ginormous pretzel...and as our friend said it tastes like Traegers butt hole...honestly not sure what that taste like but...maybe it's a large piece of bread with not enough sauce. On a side note when we asked for more sauce the waiter said no problem but then told us the manager said they had to bill us for it. So I'll say again our waiter Gabriel was awesome. When I asked to talk to the manager he never came out. So.....drink the beer....maybe eat some place else. read more

Don't bother going - we were excited to try the new restaurant. Super slow service, took over an hour to get our entrees. Dirty drink glasses, food was warm but had been sitting for a bit.
