Waffalonia never fails to satisfy any Belgium liège waffle cravings! I love eating these waffles during ski trips and these make me so nostalgic. You walk into a small shop and there's only 2, 4-top tables and 1, 2-top inside so the space is a bit tight for larger groups. They have different types of waffles based on different cities in Belgium, and you can add different toppings for an extra price. Waffles are made fresh for every order and the place smells delicious.

Love this place so much!! Every time I walk by it smells SO good I'm really tempted to walk in just because of the glorious sugary buttery belgian waffle smells wafting outside. This place serves up beautiful and huge belgian waffles with all the toppings you can imagine -- nutella, various ice cream flavors, whipped cream, fruits, you name it. Personally I'm a fan of whipped cream and ice cream, because it goes so well with the hot fresh waffle. You order inside at the counter and you can also see them making the waffles in front of you. There's limited seating inside and since covid it's been taken away, so it's more of a grab and go situation. The workers here are fantastic and very friendly. They were really accommodating when I brought a huge group here and did a mass order of waffles! It's definitely not a light dessert, but if you have the stomach space for it it's sooo worth it!

We really enjoyed the waffles, they were quite delicious. I chose to add blueberries, and they were fresh and amazing. Our order was ready almost immediately. There is a sign that says "take out only,' however there were 2 little tables just outside the entrance.

This was yummy! I am waffle fanatic and they were delicious here. I loved all the different topping options and how they're named after places in Belgium. Service was fast and friendly and the shop is very cute and comfortable. The waffles are not incredibly filling but they were a nice treat!!

Two words, COOKIE BUTTER! I've been meaning to write this review for a year but I end up wolfing down my waffles and never take a picture of the warm, slight crunch of the cooked sugar, and fluffy waffle. It is the ultimate sweet tooth satisfaction. They do have ice cream and I've seen folks get ice cream but I get the cookie butter. It adds the razzle dazzle to an already spectacular treat. By the way, the decor is really cool and there is so much information on the cork board

You know how long I've been comin' yeah Since Prince was on Apollonia Since O.J. had Isotoners Don't act like I never told ya So when you're in Pennsyl-vonia Whether with friends or alone, yuh If you want a waffle boner Then come straight to Waffallonia WHAT. I've had a lot of bad waffles in America and most of the American-style ones are that. I've had some good ones here and there, and then I've had a few that were so great that they could have been sold in Belgium, and still made a splash and still tasted good. This is one of those truly exceptional ones. Sure nothing will ever be as good as the heaven of the waffles in Brussels, but when it comes to the American version, you have the one in New York City (Wafles And Dinges, now a chain), and then you have this one. None of the others around the country have ever had have been as good or authentic. You would not expect to find such a perfectly traditional Liege Waffle in Pittsburgh, but come here and get it with Speculoos, and you'll see for yourself that you don't need to go to Belgium to get this absolutely incredible treat. What to get: Liege Waffle w/Spekuloos Spread. What else: I want to recommend more things but I don't want to spread myself too thin. If you have never been to Brussels and tried the heaven that is churned out at Maison Dandoy near the main square, the greatest Liege Waffles in the world, then this is a very very good attempt at giving you the joy without the travel expenses. It's not as good as Maison Dandoy, and is second in the USA (probably) to Wafles & Dinges of Manhattan, but other than that, it's the best version of a Belgian Waffle that I've ever tried outside of Belgium. And the fact that they serve Spekuloos (the amazing, delicious traditional Gingerbread spread which has to be imported from Belgium itself) on their waffles (make sure you ask for it) just adds to the experience (I love parentheses) (you can probably tell) (anyway I think this paragraph is just about done, don't you). Seriously, though, the name is very clever. Wallonia is the name that the Belgians call the Southern (French-speaking) part of the country. One of these days, Belgique-Belgie may split into two... the Flemish and the French. That would be a shame, but if it happens, it won't be unexpected. The title of this dessert spot is a play on the word Wallonia... one which I myself would be proud of. The price is not too bad, considering it's in the most expensive fancy part of Pitt, right next to Murray & Forbes. So grab one of these, and you're all Squirrelled away for the day in the best kind of way. It's a tiny little place with not much room to eat (just like the places in Belgium), service is fine, sometimes really friendly, sometimes curt (I mean literally my boy Curt works here, so...), and in general, it's perhaps the best dessert you can try in Pennsylvania. Pencil it in, because I hope I'm not writing this review in Vain, yeah? Get it. Pencil. Vain, yeah. No more bad jokes, or jokes in general. We're done. Not in this review anyway. Besides, this Waffle is so good, that if you eat too many of them, this Waffle'll Own ya. Hence the name. Anyway this review is so so long already. I need to end it. And again I'm sorry for waffling so much.

I can't believe I've gone this long without a liege waffle in my life. This was the most melt in your mouth delicious treat I've had in a long time and it's so unique from any other type of dessert out there. These are made to order, aka hot and fresh and decadent in the best way. I can't wait to go back and try every flavor combination.

Stumbled upon this amazing find while in the area for dinner! I have an obsession with Belgium waffles and crave the authentic taste that I had when I visited Belgium. This place brought the authentic taste that I hadn't had in ten years! The place basically only does takeout. There are a couple tables outside for you to eat but we ordered to go We ordered the Antwerp and the Charleroi. They both were DELICIOUS. The liege waffle was definitely the highlight of every bite. I wished that I had just gotten the regular liege The chewiness of the dough, and the sweetness was absolutely done to perfection. I'm so glad that we stumbled upon this place. Highly recommend!

Very tasty! I had the Namur: banana and Nutella and it was served warm and tasty! I think these waffles may be just as good plain as the Liege waffles. It is hard to taste the sugar waffle itself with the added toppings, so I would be glad to return and go for the simplest experience. I'll say that the wait also, despite a long line, was very quick and efficient. A good first experience!

My new sweet addiction! Waffallonia is a convenient treat for snacks, breakfast, and dessert! Personally, I like the classic homemade whip cream with the waffles! Also, they offer packs of waffle to go. I bought a 4-pack waffles for friends that were visiting and they were easy to heat up!

Stopped in on one of those false alarm spring days (you know when it's magically 50° in February) and ordered a waffle with biscoff and strawberries. It was (not photogenic but) super tasty and reminded me of another waffle dessert shop out of state that always had a long line on warmer days. With this, the waffle spot on walnut, treats and beans, and smashed waffles in town, I'm living my waffle dreams!

It always smelled so delectable every time I would walk past so I finally tried it and I wasn't disappointed! I got the build your own waffle that you can put as many toppings as you want on it. It was such a great way to end the night. The waffles had a nice sugary crunch, the ice cream was so creamy, and the fruit was super fresh! There's only one employee working at a time so it takes some time, but they were so kind!! There are only 3 tables inside because it's a small place.

My boyfriend surprised me by bringing me a waffle home for lunch today. (I wish all lunches could be so sweet!) Fresh strawberries and bananas lay atop my beeea-uuu-ti-ful waffle. Caramelized sugar adds an ever so slight crunch to these sweet, fluffy waffles. I know you can get Dave and Andy's ice cream served atop of these (not so ideal for takeout which is the only reason mine did come furnished with some! ;)), which I imagine would be even more heavenly. I'm sincerely glad I don't live closer to Waffallonia or this gal would be bustin' out of her jeans in no time flat! read more

Taste like Belgium waffles to me! Comparable to NYC Waffle and Dinges, with more flavors of ice cream to choose from (I loved their pumpkin spread and pumpkin ice cream). Very tasty, could use more fruit toppings but I'm happy with what I got for sure! read more

Very tasty waffles. The prices are fairly reasonable and the service was fast. The place is very small. There's seating for about 6-8 people total and the narrow entranceway is also where the line forms. When I showed up, after finishing my waffle, I had to navigate a large gaggle of people waiting to order. read more

Instead of a long wait next door, I decided to try Waffallonia for the first time. I ordered the waffle with Nutella, bananas, and strawberries. At first the serving size of one waffle looked a bit small for my appetite. However, joke was on me as I started digging more and more into this brunch. The waffle was very filling and so good. There were sugary bites that reminded me of a funnel cake. The fruit was fresh and everything tasted great mixed together. I am happy there was a wait next door which prompted me to try this as it was very worth it. The atmosphere was cozy as well as the few seats inside were pressed up against a tiny counter. Oh so good!! I love a good waffle and my wife is generally ambivalent about them. We went there one morning and were the only people in the place (which was fortunate since it is the quintessential "hole in the wall" with maybe 5 or 6 seats all together.) I got Nutella and whip cream and my wife got strawberries and whip. The toppings were good, but the waffle was amazing. The yeast batter that they use creates a really tender waffle, while the sugar they use creates a delicate crispy crust. These are so good, I brought one to my wife in the hospital the day after she had our son as a reward! She, the ambivalent one, liked them so much. We will definitely go back for seconds. read more

The waffle maker machine was filthy. The waffle was speckled with what looked like flecks of teflon - not burn marks but very very thin black flecks that we could peel off. We tasted the waffle in a clean spot, it was sweet and tasted okay but we won't be back due to the filth and disturbing flecks of mystery stuff. read more

Wow, diamond in the rough! Came here on a Saturday around lunchtime and the place wasn't too busy. The girl behind the register was friendly and brought out our order real fast. MAN, THE WAFFLE. Always smells sooooooooo good! During my two years' stay at Squirrel Hill, I always see people buying waffle at this small place-that says a lot! I personally would give 3 stars only, because the waffle are way too sweet for me; however, if you like sweet food, go for it! read more

Went there for breakfast today. Had the Strawberry, Banana and Nutella Sugar waffle and it was very tasty. More of a desert than a breakfast, but delish. The coffee sucked but it's a waffle place, not a coffe place. I don't recommend it gor breakfast but do recommend it as an perfect place to grab a desert after dinner (a small dinner). read more

This place is very small. And could be alot cleaner/cuter. BUT, it was seriously the best thing i've tasted in a while. Part of me wanted my husband to take the kids outside so i could enjoy it fully in peace. LOL I got a waffle with the nutella ice cream and hot fudge. Wishing i would have tried a spread. I seriously want to go back to PGH just to eat here again. A MUST when in the area. :) read more

Went for breakfast here with my girlfriend while she was in town from Australia. We only had a week together and this was the first place we were going to go based on how much I enjoyed coming here a few years ago. She got the Antwerp and I got a custom waffle with nutella and vanilla ice cream. We were probably the first customers that morning so the minimalist seating was just fine for us. We greatly enjoyed our waffles, which didn't cost more that six bucks. I'd highly recommend coming here if you're going to be in Pittsburgh. It's worth it. read more

Yumtastic! My husband and I ordered one waffle with Nutella and I blinked and didn't even get one bite. So I squeezed back up to the counter (the place is slightly larger than a closet, but cozy!) and ordered another one. I had more luck this time but only because I think my husband was distracted by the size of the Nutella jars there. I had two deliciously flavorful bites and by this time my husband was done trying to get the lady to sell us a bucket of Nutella so he ate the rest. I love Nutella as much as the next person but honestly the waffles were so flavorful on their own they didn't really need anything. We will definitely go back. read more

This is clearly no doubt the best liege waffle I've ever, ever had! The texture is quite chewy, yet not hard to chew at all. A tangy taste exaggerates itself when it is in your mouth, something I've never experienced on other waffles. And also, it is cheaper than some of inferior waffles! So good that every time I get to Pittsburgh I seek the chance to have one. read more

Specialties

Waffallonia specializes in serving authentic Liège waffles. These are the waffles that Belgians eat and are very different than the Americanized Belgian waffles. Liège waffles are denser because they are made from dough rather than batter, and they contain pearl sugar from Belgium. This special sugar caramelizes when heated and creates a crunchy outer coating on parts of the waffle. The sugar that doesn't melt completely leaves pockets of sweetness throughout the interior. Our waffles are amazing on their own, but we also offer fresh fruit, Nutella, whipped cream, and ice cream for you to design your own creation.

Parking can be a little challenging, but there are several nearby garages that make it manageable. 10/10 experience. So grateful we got the chance to try smashed waffles. Pittsburgh needed this spot.

I especially loved the glaze on the cereal killer waffle and the "secret sauce" served with their savory waffles. The cinnamon roll coffee I ordered was also fantastic and a very smooth and sweet drink. Everything was fantastic, and the owner was extremely kind and welcoming. I will definitely be back!

His accent was heavier and harder to understand than my wife's. I'm Caucasian and was born in the US. I enjoy meeting and befriending people from around the world. However, when an immigrant such as this jerk treats my immigrant wife as somehow lower, yeah, he's going to hear it from me. The coward hid in the back but I yelled loudly that I'm a native-born American and that he has no more right to be in this country than anyone else. I tried a sample of the ice cream before his bigoted hissy fit and it wasn't bad but there's MUCH better ice cream in Pittsburgh. They have a limited selection, too. Take your money elsewhere, this guy is trash.

At first was very excited to come here because I had heard good things from friends but I had not experienced for myself so I decided that I would eat regardless of my experience I'm pleased to inform you that I enjoyed myself very much and had a delicious waffle for lunch prices were fair and the food really good. After that I checked online reviews and was shocked! This place is way correctly rated. The chocolate waffle is some of my favorite in the area and beats out some philly places... I don't know if this is amazing and addictive and I will never stop eating here until I am very poor I would support it just to give the underprivileged who work here for a few a buck, but they make awesome waffles too! Having just moved to Pittsburgh from NYC, I was worried about how I was going to satisfy all my crazy food cravings. I loved being able to get Liège waffles from my favorite food truck with all the crazy toppings I could dream up. Enter Waffalonia! Not only can I get my crazy toppings, the waffles are crazy good. I love that you can get different sizes, you know, in case you were going to share your waffle...or just have more waffle for yourself! The only downfall to this delightful Belgian waffle station is the limited seating indoors-be prepared to take your waffle to the streets. read more

the waffle was good (more like a doughnut crossed with a waffle) and the toppings were first rate. I quaint little hole in the wall this place has a lot of character. Unfortunately it does not have any room to sit. There are a couple counters on the wall but this place is SMALL. We had to to take it to go and would have really preferred to sit. Im a fan. Don't miss out on the toppings because a $7 waffle scares you. I promise it's worth it. I can smell the sweet sugar waffles thinking about it, but you can also smell them if you're walking along Murray. Add a scoop of ice cream, Nutella, and some fruit and you have a delicious dessert (or dinner!) One thing...don't expect to find a knife; your fork (or hands) will do just fine! read more
