Just as sticky and greasy as ever and as crazy as it sounds... I would'nt have it any other way. On our trips down south we make it a tradition to have breakfast on the road at a Waffle House and this one was the first for my wife many years ago so along with a true southern breakfast a bit of nostalgia. Bustling with locals and road warriors we sat at the bar and had the grits with extra whipped butter and a dash of hot sauce, Pancakes,white toast,hash browns,over easy eggs,sausage patties,bacon, coffee and a large orange juice.....so basically a light breakfast in the south. Everthing was as remembered and so comforting, service was friendly and I even got called Hon in true Waffle house fashion and all was right with the world. I love this place. read more

Waffle House is what it is - a place to get good food fast. Nothing fancy. But good. The staff are friendly and the service is pretty quick. The place could use a good cleaning- maybe shut down for a few hours a week and actually clean it. But overall, we had fun and got what we paid for. read more

Waffle House locations are all pretty much the same as far as food goes. What sets them all apart is the service. There are some servers who have worked there forever and some who are rather new. The long time servers are fast and efficient but it is clear that this job takes a toll on them. I truly wish a smile was a mandatory part of the uniform! Our server was not very attentive. We had to ask for refills and the food did not come out at the same time. It was frustrating since I could see her as she walked past our table without checking in. As for the food, the waffles were good. The hash browns were cooked perfectly! I always ask for them well done so they are crispy. As a side note, the day we visited the server informed us that they had no running water. Hmmmmm..... She told us we could have milk or juice to drink. Considered leaving because I really wanted coffee! She essentially said that was fine but it would be a really long way to another WH. We stayed. Other people were getting coffee so I asked and she said she had some. Well that would have been nice to know! Ended up sending the coffee back because it was strong enough to put hair on the most hardened sailor. Will I go back? Probably. It is the only one close to home. (it is over 30 minutes away!) Will I still wish the employees were consistently happy, welcoming, and attentive. Maybe a present manager would have helped to keep the pace. read more

This has to be one of the worst waffle houses out there. This is my second time here and both times the service was atrocious! I had to ask to order and the ladies response was give me a second while she was texting on her phone! Not to mention the entire time I was there, she was playing on the phone with her toddler. There were 2 other employees just sitting across from Her in the tables that clearly heard me ask for service and just sat there. They have the best food after a long night out, nothing beats a $7 colossal breakfast. $3 waffles like nothing beats this place. I know Waffle House is a chain, but there was nothing my table and I noticed that warrants anything less than a 4-star rating for this branch. Three of us were close to making a last-second ditch to Cracker Barrel a few yards away, but we gave this place a chance since we just wanted something quick to eat after a long trip. FOOD: Cheesesteak Melt Hash Brown Bowl: Good and filling! On top of a large mound of cheesy hash browns is a generous serving of grilled chopped steak and onions. No salt was needed, but I added some Tabasco for a spicy kick. Texas Angus Patty Melt: A bit on the small side, but pretty good! It's flavorful, the patty was tasty albeit a bit too "done" for our preference, the bacon was crispy, and the hash browns were just as good as my order. Texas Cheesesteak Melt: The comments are similar to the patty melt, but the obvious difference is the chopped steak--which was plentiful and tender. It also came with crispy bacon. For the price and quality, this does the job! The drinks were good too, particularly the Lemonade and the Iced Tea-Monade. SERVICE: Maybe I went on a good day, but the service was great. We were warmly welcomed when we walked in. The lady who cooked our table's entire order was really friendly, as was the waitress for our table. Our food was served hot and fresh from the griddle next to us within 20 minutes. Yes, there are at least a dozen other options in Dumfries, but this place is a solid and reliable option for a simple but good and reasonably priced meal. read more

D is for Dumfries, VA! Continuing with my letter series of cities, the exclamation point for Dumfries is because there isn't much there, but I thought of one, and it was noteworthy and could be tied with my dating series of reviews. Very late like around 3 AM on Sunday morning in January 2014, my wonderful date was continuing! We had met on New Year's, and this was our second date. I met this chick online, and she lived nearby in the Montclair neighborhood (Dumfries mailing address). We had gone to dinner in south Fairfax County, Irish bar in Arlington, then wine bar walking distance from there staying until closing time at 2 AM, and then, I drove her back to Dumfries. She was cautious because she didn't want to give me her exact address since we had met online. So, she was parked at the nearby elementary school. I drove her back, and we were just about to kiss/make out (for the first time; remember this was only our second date), and a security guard snuck up with the flashlight asking what we were doing and get out of the parking lot. We agreed to continue the date at the nearby Waffle House. We each drove there, and I remember I got the waffle. The waffle was excellent! The syrup was dripping off the plate. I'm not even sure I had a better waffle in my life until once more recently! Coincidentally, my date got a waffle too. The server was nice and recognized as an excellent couple (even though it was only our second date). Perhaps, the Waffle House doesn't get the best clientele; I don't know, but we must've really impressed that server! Now, just past 4 AM, I was exhausted from this marathon date lasting like 9 hours, and way past my bedtime, we walked to the car, and we finally made out, and it was wonderful! Nice service but the food isn't great at all. I enjoyed the WHs in Atlanta but this one is lack luster. Eggs were hard, syrup canister was dirty and covered in the sticky stuff. The bacon was the star of the show. The waffle was half cooked and the grits were runny. The minute maid orange juice is the same stuff you get in a cafeteria, bleh! Dirt and hair in the corners of the shop as well. Looks as if no one swept or used a vacuum in months. Not sure why people are giving this place more than 2 stars. Let me start first by saying I Love Waffle House! But this one is different. I mean you expect the vintage greasy look. However as I entered this one the outside was trashy in the parking lot, I was greeted by a cashier that had a cigarette behind her ear with her hood on barely wanted to open her mouth to take my order.... I was wondering if Anyone was going to wash their hands at any point from the time I was there. Not even.... could go on.... Wonderful Waffle House food when you go there during the day. The night time crew is quite frankly disgusting... they turn off the phones at night so they don't have to make takeout orders. My guess is because they don't get tipped as much/at all for takeout. If you go inside and wait for the food they roll their eyes and slap it together, getting the order wrong. I grew up on Waffle House being that I from the Deep South. (There are often two locations across the street from each other.) This location is the closest one to the BIG city, so I drove 30 miles for a chicken melt and hash browns.‍ They were a little busy, so we sat at the counter. During the course of 5 mins, I killed at least 8 baby cockroaches. We should have left immediately-- but instead, moved to a table...‍‍‍‍ (not very bright).... I tried to point out to several employees WHY we moved and was ignored. We both got sick later on that day. Not violently ill, but sick none the less. I have to say, I was excited to move back east after ten years , and enjoy waffle house again. However, after a forty minute drive, forty minute wait for a table and thirty minute wait for eggs, bacon and under cooked hash brownwns without coffee or water. Food was good. Too bad the 6 people working have no concept of customer service. For one, SPEAK to the customers walking in or when they sit down. Acknowledge me when I have come into your establishment to give you MY money. The customer service here sucks!!! Everyone knows you come to Waffle House for a late night quick meal. Well this one is "open" 24 hrs but a hassle to order. They don't answer the phone and the inside isn't open to dine. You have to order from a window but the waitress barely comes to it. Sat here for awhile expecting her to walk over after we made eye contact...nope she doesn't. This continues for about five minutes then I watch someone knock on the window to get her attention and she still doesn't come. Got great service at this place. The food was awesome and we got a show while it was being made. The two cooks just started going at it and it was the funniest thing to watch. The were fighting for who got to make our food order. My very first Waffle House experience went well. It's ridiculous how much food we had for a total of $35! Something for everyone who enjoys a hardy breakfast. I loved how casual and no frills it was. Sometimes in the DMV we do brunch way bigger than it has to be done! So this basic approach to breakfast food was a wonderful relieve to having to get all dolled up for the traditional dmv brunch. Our waitress helped us to properly order from the menu in order to maximize savings and food portions for our group of 4. Curious to know what the other dishes are like but I will likely keep it simple when I return to WF, b/c if ain't broke don't fix it - order your waffles and keep it moving. read more

A Yankee's Guide to the Waffle House (just in case they let your kind in): 1. Order a waffle. This may seem obvious, but don't come in here looking for an omelette, a steak, or a burger. While all of these items are listed on the menu, they're only there for fluff and show. Order a waffle, some hashbrowns, maybe grits or bacon. Don't stray from the basics, folks. It's just silly, especially on your first visit. 2. Said hashbrowns can be prepared in 3,538,944 ways. And no, I'm not kidding. I'd recommend scattered and smothered (on the grill with onions) but feel free to experiment. Only go "all the way" if you're fully prepared for that kind of commitment. 3. You can still smoke in Waffle House. In fact, I'm pretty sure the cook can smoke while preparing your order. The place is usually "separated" nonsmoking/smoking, but it's one big room so there's not much difference. Just cowboy up and prepare yourself for it. Same goes for the negligible cleanliness of the place. Your meal is going to be $5, don't expect the Four Seasons. 4. $1 will get you 6 plays on the jukebox. And no, these aren't fancy digital jukeboxes with an unlimited array of choices. Hell, these don't even light up: they play 45s. Most have been "upgraded" to play the latest hits but don't bother with those. It's a WaHo rule to play Freebird as part of your selection, so you've got 5 others to play around with. I'd recommend the oldest stuff on the machine: Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty, and the like. Playing one of the Waffle House themed songs will stamp you as a first-timer, but if you're going to go there, I'd recommend "Grill Operator," sung to the same tune as the classic "Smooth Operator." It's a winner all around. 5. Bring cash, pay at the register. The wonderful folks who work here don't have the time, patience, or courtesy to deal with 12 credit cards. Just bring a couple of bucks, especially to leave as tip. Sure, they'll call you "sugar" and "darling" as they ring you up, but there's no reason to make their lives more difficult, now is there? 6. If you've got a group, it's easiest to split up. The booths are meant for 4 and 5 is do-able, but any more than that and things get messy. Oh, and if you're dining any way other than solo, don't dare sit at the bar. That's reserved for the crusty old men (ie, the regulars). 7. Most importantly, enjoy it. WaHo holds a special place in many people's hearts (mine included, obviously) so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience. Went to Waffle House this morning and the waitress was all over the place. Just clueless. The restaurant was not busy at 6:55 AM. Standing at the register for almost 10 minutes. Little old lady waitress looks at me and state, "I will be with you in a minute." A minute goes by then the young waitress passes by me two times. I'm dumbfounded at this point. The man at the counter receives his food, but send his plate back because his order was wrong. Finally the young waitress takes my order. She does not hand my flip to the cook, but places it on the counter. The man at the counter receives his order then ask for silverware, which took the young waitress at least 3 minutes to get. Did I not mention the restaurant was not busy or crowded. I go to Waffle House typically on Saturdays, but I took the day off from work and did not feel like cooking breakfast. If you come here expecting healthy food you're in the wrong place. You can only really understand Waffle House by checking it out. Try the pecan waffle, hash browns (scattered, smothered, and capped) with a coffee and you'll enjoy it. Eat here more than once a month and it might take 10 years off your life (but might just be worth it). Friendly service, no frills, and even a juke box. You can't go wrong here. It's a greasy spoon. A typical diner breakfast and artery-clogging hamburgers for lunch. I like coming to these places every once in a while because they are a dying breed. Even though the Waffle House is a franchise it retains a family-owned feel. I fear that one day these little breakfast spots will be all gone swallowed-up by the likes of Bob Evans, IHOP and Denny's which are all pre-fabricated breakfasts for lemmings. Three stars because of the so-so cleanliness, run-down appearance and smaller portions.
